The Department of Pharmacy Services organized a “Regional Symposium and Refresher Course for Pharmacists” on the theme, “Excellence in Pharmacy Practice for Quality and Safe Use of Medicines” on June 04, 2015 at the Jacob Chandy Hall, Paul Brand Building, in association with Tamilnadu Pharmacy Council, Chennai. More than 110 delegates - hospital pharmacists, community pharmacists, members from the Drugs and Chemists Association, Faculty and PharmD students from pharmacy colleges actively participated in the Symposium.

The Symposium was opened with prayer by the Chaplain, Mr. Raja. Dr. J.V.Peter, Head, Pharmacy Services, welcomed the delegates and the Chief Guest, Dr. K.G. Revikumar, Principal and Director, Kerala Institute of Drug Studies, Trivandrum Kerala, delivered the key-note address on the theme. The Senior Drugs Inspectors of Vellore zone, Mrs. Kalaiselvi and Mrs. P. Mahalakshmi and the Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Mrs. Florence Segaran gave the felicitations. The Organizer of the symposium, Dr. S. Annadurai, Professor, Pharmacy Services proposed the vote of thanks.

The speakers included external expert from pharmacy academia, Pharmacovigilance programme of India, Quality Management and Faculty from CMC, Vellore and all the presentations were well appreciated by the delegates. The feedbacks from the delegates were excellent with demand for organizing frequent symposium, at least, once in six months in CMC. NEXT GENERA TION SEQUENCING P ANELS FFOR OR MA TURIT Y GENERATION PANELS MATURIT Next Generation Sequencing panels forMaturity -Onset Diabetes of the Young,Lipodystrophy / Insulin resistance, Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Acute Porphyria We have introduced Next Generation Sequencing panels for Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY), Lipodystrophy/Insulin resistance, Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) andAcute Porphyria (AP)gene screening in the Molecular Endocrinology laboratory, Department of Endocrinology, CMC, Vellore, I. Maturity-Onset Diabetes of the Young or MODY affects 1-2% of people with diabetes, although it is often misdiagnosed as T1DM or T2DM and goes unrecognized. The main features of MODY are: I. Age of onset of Diabetes before the age of 25 years II. Autosomal dominant family history of Diabetes III. Negative for auto antibodies (GAD and IA2 negative) IV. Absence of signs of insulin resistance and DKA The MODY multiplex parallel sequencing for 13 genes, is the first of its type in the world, started by Endocrine laboratory in CMC, Vellore.

MODY is an autosomal dominant disease which is caused due to single gene mutation which is passed on by affected parents to their children (50% chance of inheriting). There are 13 different MODY genes reported till date.

Next Generations Sequencing based genetic testing is now available for the complete panel of 13 MODY genes.

The required information for MODY genetic testing is available at http://cmcendovellore.org/MODY-genetic-testing-form.pdf It is important to confirm the subtype of MODY to provide appropriate treatment for the patient, perform family screening (advise other family members of their risk of inheriting it), provide genetic counselling and identify subjects early on with any signs of hyperglycemia.

II. Lipodystrophies are characterized by generalized or partial absence of adipose tissue and are typically considered in individuals with high insulin resistance. The NGS panel includes six genes implicated in partial and generalized Lipodystrophy/Insulin resistance: LMNA, AGPAT2, BSCL2, PPARG, INSR, and ZMPSTE24.

III. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) NGS panel include eight genes: COL1A1, COL1A2, IFITMS, CRTAP, SERPINH1, LEPRE1, PP1B, SP7. This gene set include autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive forms of OI and based on the literature it is expected that this test could provide>95% OI patients with a confirmed diagnosis.

IV. Based clinical presentation diagnosis of specificAcute porphyria can be difficult because the Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP), Hereditary Coproporphyria (HCP), Variegate Porphyria (VP) acute porphyrias (AIP, HCP, VP) typically have similar clinical presentation, biochemical findings, and responses to treatment. Therefore, NGS based parallel sequencing of all the three genes (HMBS, CPOX &PPOX )would be advantageous and could provide confirmed diagnosis in majority of the acute porphyria cases.

All the genetic are cost-effective, and cheaper by almost 20-fold when compared to than those done in western laboratories.

MR. H. SUNDAR RETIRES Mr. H. Sundar joined CMC in December 1981 as Accounts clerk and retired on June 9, 2015 as Accounts Officer Gr.I after a dedicated service in this institution for 34 years.

He also served as a Treasurer of CMC Staff Department Society for a period of 4 years and as Employee representative in PF trust for a period of 5 years. He has two daughters.

Ms. Vidya and Ms. Lavanya. Mrs. Vidya got married to a Mechanical Engineer and settled down in Dubai and Mrs. Lavanya got married to a Scientist of ICMR and settled down in Nagpur. He is blessed with two grand children.

CMC thanks him for his many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes him a blessed retired life.

RETIREMENTS Mrs. Joy Ratnammal Ernest G. Arthur, Instructor Orthoptist, Ophthalmology Department retired on May 25, 2015 after 37 years of service to the insitution. Her kindness, willingness to help and friendly nature were appreciated by everyone in the Ophthalmology Department. Her husband, Mr. Ernest G, Arthur is doing leather business. They have two children, one son and a daughter. Their son Lilford Immanuel is a software engineer in Chennai and his wife Benita Diana is also a software engineer in Chennai. Their daughter Lyndsay Priscilla is an Assist Professor in Zoology department, Auxilium College, Vellore.

Mr. K. Moses Muniswamy, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Department of New Life Centre, retired on June 04, 2015 after 29 years of service to the institution. He has a son and two daughters.

His son, Mr. Isaac is a Lab Technician in Blood Bank.

Mr. A. Gajendran, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Electrical Department, retired on June 06, 2015 after 30 years of service to the institution. He has three sons. His sons, Mr. Selvam is a Hospital Attendant in 'A' Block and Mr. Thulasiraman is a Hospital Attendant in Environmental Engineering Department.

Mr. P. Srinivasan, Senior Selection Grade Clinical Biochemist Grade I in the Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory, Division of Gastrointestinal Sciences, retired on June 10, 2015 after 34 ½ years of service to the institution. Mr. Srinivasan was responsible for providing diagnostic support in the Histopathology laboratory. Mr. Srinivasan was awarded the Senior Training Fellowship and underwent training in the Woman’s Children Hospital, Adelaide from March 1, 2007 to April 11, 2007. His kindness, willingness to help and friendly nature were appreciated by everyone in the Division. His wife, Mrs. Sarada is working as Clerk typist in the Department of Infectious Diseases. They have two daughters, Ms. Harini is working as a Tutor in the College of Nursing and Ms. Dharini is doing internship in Perfusion Technology Course in Cardio Thoracic Surgery.

Mrs. S. Pathipoornam, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Forensic Medicine Department, retired on June 12, 2015 after 30 years of service to the institution. She has a son and three daughters.

Son, Mr. Manivannan is a Hospital Attendant in Pharmacy.

CMC thanks them for their many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes them a blessed retired life.

SUMMER BASKETBALL SPORTS COACHING

The summer basket ball coaching in the hospital campus for the staff children was conducted successfully in the month of May 2015, around 20 staff children participated in the camp, the valedictory function was conducted on May 30, 2015. Drs. Jiji Mathew, Swati and Serina presented the mementos to the staff children.
