Accreditation

General Services Christian Medical College is supported by a dedicated team of support staff. These include the following Departments:

recycled water every day. The Department was established in 2011 in an effort by the institution to reduce its carbon footprint.

The Civil Engineering Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of buildings, water supply, sewage system and roads. The Department has been constantly adapting to modern technological concepts, particularly those that are environment friendly. During 2013-14, a total of 38 major and 36 minor projects were completed for an overall value of Rs. 50,14,34,055.00. Another 14 major and 15 minor projects are in progress. A total of 16,926 maintenance jobs in masonry, plumbing, carpentry, painting etc. were also carried out during 2013-14.

The Mechanical Engineering Department oversees the maintenance of hospital equipment in CMC and its peripheral units. It provides steam and medical gases to the operation theatres and the critical care units. During 2013-14, 11,440 jobs were carried out and 162 new medical gas outlets were added to the existing system. New machinery installed included equipment in the new ENT OR complex and energy efficient air compressors and solar concentrator if the boiler feed water. The Asset Recycling Office streamlines the process of recycling equipment within the institution and to mission hospitals.

The Electrical Engineering Department is responsible for the electrical installations and fire safety requirements of the institution. It maintains 25 transformers, 20 generators and 72 lifts. A Solar photo voltaic power plant was installed and commissioned during 2013-14. This is an important step toward energy efficiency and conservation. Several conventional transformers have also been replaced by newer efficient transformers. The fire safety equipment is regularly serviced and maintained. During 2013-14, 46 major projects and 52 minor projects were successfully completed.

The Department of Dietetics takes care of the nutritional requirements of the outpatients and inpatients. During 2013-14, 1,47,613 inpatient diets were served. A total of 28,071 patients were seen in the Outpatient Department.

The Electronic Engineering Department is responsible for the installation, calibration, testing and maintenance of Biomedical Equipment and Electronic Equipment in the institution. It also maintains certain centralized systems such as the Pneumatic Chute, OPD Patient paging, Nurse paging, Chapel Relay system, Surveillance Camera system, Audio Video system and the Emergency Communication system. During 201314, 5 new RFID pneumatic stations were installed, and 149 new CCTV cameras and 22 DVRs were added to the existing CCTV network. New PA systems were installed in the Alpha Clinic, Schell Eye Hospital, Pre-Anaesthesia Clinic and CHAD. An Emergency Communication PA system was installed in the Main Operation Theatre Complex. The Department of Environmental Engineering ensures the provision of uninterrupted drinking water supply to the CMC Main Hospital campus, the Kagitapattarai campus and to the Schell Eye Hospital campus. The Sewage Treatment Plant, also maintained by the Department, produces 18 to 20 lakh litres of 8

The Postal Section handled 68,873 letters and 1,414 parcels during 2013-14. The Department very efficiently handles both the external and internal mail of the institution. The Laundry Department handled 67,30,498 pieces of linen at an average of 18,441 pieces per day. Over the year, the Department installed and dedicated new equipment that aids the process of washing and ironing linen for the hospital. The Hospital Maintenance is responsible for the cleanliness and the general maintenance of the Main Hospital and the Campus. The College Maintenance looks after the same in the Bagayam Campus. A dedicated team of Hospital Housekeeping Attendants work tirelessly to maintain high standards of cleanliness in the Hospital. The Central Sterile Supply Department received 32,47,114 items for sterilization and processed 45,17,630 sterile packs during 2013-14. An average of 12,377 packs were processed every day, and 8,16,955 items were supplied to the OPDs.

NABH CMC has been awarded the NABH Accreditation with effect from December 22, 2013 to December 23, 2016. National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) is a constituent board of the Quality Council of India, set up to establish and operate accreditation programme for healthcare organizations. Accreditation from NABH is a public recognition for quality care and services rendered by the organization, after a thorough assessment of the hospital's structures, processes and outcomes. NABH is not an end in itself, but the beginning of the quality enhancement process. CMC embarked on this journey with the help of 169 Department Quality Managers and subsequently, in 2010, with an additional 187 Department Safety Advisors. The pre-assessment inspection was held in 2010 and the final inspection in 2011. Most recently, in December 2013, a verification visit was also held. The process of continuous monitoring, internal inspections and audits have helped us in streamlining a variety of issues ranging from infrastructure, statutory issues, clinical documentation, staff awareness, emergency preparedness, clinical audits, accountability and ownership at various levels. Accreditation is valid for three years, with a midcourse surveillance inspection. CMC is the biggest hospital in the country to be accredited by NABH. There are about 200 hospitals accredited by NABH, which includes about 10 medical college hospitals.

NABL Accreditation of Diagnostic Services at CMC The main purpose of accreditation is to create systems to ensure quality of diagnostic tests to improve reliability and thereby increase the confidence among patients and the clinical community (peer group). Towards this end, the following laboratories have gone through the necessary processes for accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL): Department of Clinical Biochemistry (2001), Department of Clinical Virology (2013) and Department of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology (Clinical Pathology & Blood Bank 2014). The Department of Microbiology has completed most of its work and is awaiting final assessment after a successful pre-assessment. Several other Departments are preparing for or are in the process of being assessed for accreditation purposes, e.g., Departments of Pathology, Cytogenetics and Wellcome Laboratory. The NABL is an autonomous body under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, which has been established with the objective to provide Government, Industry Associations and Industry in general with a scheme for third-party assessment of the quality and technical competence of testing and calibration laboratories. The Government of India has authorised NABL as the accreditation body for Testing (including Medical/Clinical) and Calibration Laboratories. In order to achieve this objective, NABL provides laboratory accreditation services to laboratories that are performing tests / calibrations in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005 and ISO 15189:2012 for medical laboratories. There is international recognition for the accreditation status through Mutual Recognition Arrangements (MRA) under the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC). 9

New Campus Developments In 1900, Aunt Ida, our beloved founder, started mostly with an outreach service and a one bed clinic. Two years later, she moved into what is now the Schell hospital campus, responding to the increasing number of patients needing inpatient care. In 1928, the main town campus of about 20 acres was born with about 220 beds and continues to the nerve centre of most of our clinical services. For more than eighty years, this campus has been stretching to accommodate the expanding services of our institution, increasing bed strength to more than 2100 and out patients to more than 7000 per day. Floor space regulations have prevented any major expansion in the last 10 years. Having used up every inch of buildable space and still finding ourselves deficient for space affecting further growth and development and our ability to keep providing quality services as well as a good work environment, the time has come to expand into new campuses. In 2007, the institution had acquired 80 acres of land in a hamlet called Kannigapuram, 12 kms on the Chennai highway. This was a visionary move that has given us an option for expansion at a site that is not too distant from the current campus and relatively easy to reach. In 2008, the Government of Andhra Pradesh offered us a large area of about 600 acres near Chittoor, about 30 km from Vellore town, for developing institutional facilities there. The institution procured this area also and created further options for expansion in the future. These valuable real estate assets are akin to the situation Aunt Ida had, providing opportunities to build new facilities for our institution in a planned manner. These two campuses represent the enlarged footprint of the future CMC. After considering the various options in consultation with all stakeholders in the institution, it was decided that the Kannigapuram campus will be used for the current needs for major expansion of the institution. At the Chittoor campus, outpatient services have already been established and a 120-bed inpatient service is being developed. In the first phase of major expansion of the institution at the Kannigapuram campus, it is planned to build about 1500 beds and associated facilities to accommodate predominantly the specialities that cater largely to outstation patients and other services and infrastructure, including housing, required for their holistic functioning. With trauma becoming increasingly common in our country, a dedicated service is also being developed for it to meet this community requirement. In parallel, the 10

current town campus will also be developed as soon as space is created with certain departments moving to the new campus. Additional facilities will be provided for those remaining on the current campus. Extensive planning is being done to ensure that we continue to function as though under one roof which has been a major strength of the institution. A master plan, which allows expansion on the Kannigapuram campus to accommodate all services, if the institution so decides later on, is also being created. The Chittoor campus will also remain an option for developing further services much more in the future, depending on our needs and the infrastructure developments in that area within the new state of Andhra Pradesh (Seemandhra). CMC has always been on the cutting edge of innovation and technology. The future of medicine and healthcare in India will usher in newer disciplines and approaches to teaching. Having accessible space gives us the opportunities to build infrastructure for our services as well as teaching and research. As we embark on this path, we are fully aware of the many challenges particularly in terms of human resources and finance. While we make plans to deal with them, we solicit your ideas, suggestions and contributions to help us with our expansion plans so that we continue to serve God's people in the best possible ways.

Dr Ashish Goel, Associate Professor, Department of Gastroenterology was awarded the ISG-Om Prakash Memorial Award 2013 in recognition of his research work as a young scientist in the field of Gastroenterology by the Indian Society of Gastroenterology Dr. Basu Gopal, Associate Professor of Nephrology has been awarded the Fellowship for the Royal College of Physicians, London. He has also been selected to represent India on the Young Nephrologists (Mentorship) Committee Member of the International Society of Nephrology. He was honoured with the 'Distinguished Educator Award' by the Transplantation Society.

Dr. Daisy Rani Rao, alumnus of the MBBS batch of 1976 was honoured with the Paul Harrison Award for Meritorious Service in Rural Areas. The Department of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology was accredited by the NABL under ISO 15189 Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Professor of Microbiology and Head of the Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory has been appointed Independent Director on the Board of Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council. She has also been elected as Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. Dr. Geeta Chacko, Professor of General Pathology has been appointed President of the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.
