he 2016 South Zone Conference of the Association of Clinical Biochemists was organised by Dr. Victoria Job and team, Department of Clinical Biochemistry, on 23 rd and 24 th September, 2016. It was attended mainly by biochemists, laboratory managers and postgraduate students.

The topics of discussion were Total Quality Management of Laboratories and Clinical Usefulness of Serum Tumour Markers; Lean and Six Sigma, Accreditation process, Internal QC, Competency Assessment and Risk Management.

The key note address on Evolution of EQAS was delivered by Dr. A.S. Kanagasabapathy. Special guest from National Accreditation Board for Testing Laboratories, Dr. Vandana Jain emphasised CMC’s role in promoting quality. The second day began with an overview of Clinical utility of Serum Markers in various malignancies of Lung, Breast, Thyroid, Ovary, Cervix, Prostate. Markers in multiple myeloma, neuroendocrine tumours and Interferences in these assays were dealt with.

in Challenging Situations,’ the objective of the workshop was to enable nursing staff to achieve specialised nursing skills in assessment and management of patients, and be empowered to care for these patients during Neurological Emergencies.

In the poster session which drew active participation, Mrs. Janani Ishwarya and Mr. Bondu Joseph won prizes for their posters. There were also stalls with exhibits by diagnostic companies.

The programme saw 170 delegates in attendance and was awarded 20 credit points by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.

Workshop on Neurological Emergencies for Nursing Staff

Nursing staff were invited from government hospitals, mission hospitals, and hospitals in and around Vellore. During the workshop, the participants learned about emergency management of common conditions such as Traumatic Brain Injury, Acute Ischemic Stroke, Spinal cord Injuries, Brain Herniation, Neuromuscular Emergencies, Seizures and emergencies in children. These topics were covered in lectures, discussions and skill training sessions by the medical and nursing faculty. Practical skills training facilitators demonstrated Seizure Management, Intracranial Pressure Monitoring, Cervical Traction care, External Ventricular drainage System and trauma Assessment.

The workshop was well attended and received feedback that it was helpful in terms of providing care during the first hours of a neurological emergency.

Gynaecologic Oncology Cancer Awareness Month observed To increase awareness on gynaecologic cancers, the Gynaecologic Oncology Group (Departments of Gynaecologic Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology and Palliative Care Unit) organised programmes centred on Cancer Screening in women, common symptoms, danger signs, preventive measures and treatment options. The awareness campaign was flagged off at CMC Vellore, Chittoor Campus, on 3rd September, 2016, by chief guest, Dr.Vijaya Gowri, District Medical Health Officer, Chittoor district.

This was attended by a gathering of 200, including women, high school and college students.

At all the above venues, posters, pamphlets and talks were arranged to propagate cancer awareness. A cancer screening programme for CMC staff was organised by the Gynaecologic Oncology Department.

A Cancer Survivors Meet on 1st October brought together both survivors and patients undergoing treatment. Survivors shared their experiences and motivated others with coping strategies. This was followed by a CME on cervical cancer vaccines, screening, treatment of precancer and palliative care. This was widely attended by doctors, nurses and health workers.

A second event was conducted at Scudder Memorial Hospital, Ranipet, on 10th September, presided over by Dr. Lakshmi Seshadri. At the valedictory ceremony of the medical students’ Community Orientation Programme (COP) at Sholavaram village, more public awareness activities were put together by the Community Health Department and Radiation Oncology.

'International Day of Older Persons' honoured To commemorate International Day of Older Persons, the Departments of Medical Nursing, Geriatrics and the College of Nursing conducted a one-day workshop on ‘Elder Care and the Family’ on 29th September, 2016.

Dr. Shirley David, Professor and Head, Medical Nursing Department, welcomed the gathering in the presence of Dr. Prasad Mathews, Professor and Head, Geriatrics, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing, along with the Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee. Varied, appropriate and interesting topics such as ‘Ethics and Legality in Family Care’, ‘Family Support’, ‘Care of the Elder in Acute Care Setting, at Home and in the Community’, ‘End of Life Care’ and ‘Financial Security for Elders’, were covered effectively by a panel of experts in various fields. The participants were then engaged in two workshop-sessions – ‘Growing old gracefully’ and ‘Safe houses for the elderly’.

Fifty-three nurses from Tamil Nadu attended the workshop, which was awarded 7 credit hours by the Tamil Nadu Nursing Council. The participants were appreciative of the content covered and voiced their renewed confidence in caring for older persons.

Students bid farewell to Dr. Alfred Job Daniel On 27th September, 2016, all student associations – Students’ Association (SA), Association of Students in Health and Allied Sciences (ASHA) and Occupational Physiotherapist Students Association (OPTSA) – gathered to bid farewell to the outgoing Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, and to welcome the new Principal, Dr. Anna B. Pulimood.

The occasion was graced by the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, Vice Principals, Dr. Solomon Sathishkumar and Dr. Judy Ann John, Women’s Hostel Wardens, Dr. Sunithi Alexander and Dr.Adeline, former Vice Principal (AHS) Dr. Paul Ravindran and Deputy Dean (College of Nursing) Dr. Vinitha Ravindran.

The programme began with the traditional ‘Chain Reaction’ where both Principals were escorted from the Carman Block to the Scudder Auditorium by a chain of students from the MBBS batch of 2015 and the AHS batch of 2016.

This was followed by lighting of the lamp by the Director, Principals and Vice Principals. The Director presented a memento to Dr. Alfred Job Daniel.

The programme was packed with entertainment by the undergraduate student community of CMC (SA, ASHA and OPTSA).

The efforts of all students in organising the event, particularly, Mr. Richard Samuel, Vice president of ASHA, Mr. Joshua Christudoss, President of the Students’ Association and Ms. Iana Cornelius, Entertainment Secretary of OPTSA, were appreciated. The evening ended with a group photo session.

Retirement Mr. O. Manohar, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Dental Unit II, after 35 years of service since joining CMC in 1980, retired on 6th October, 2016. He has two sons; his younger son, Mr. Sathish Kumar is a Hospital Attendant in the Maternity Ward.

The CMC community thanks him for his dedication to the institution and wishes him a blessed retirement.
