The Medical Education Department conducted Contact Courses in Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine (PGDFM) for 48 MBBS Graduates currently serving at various Indian mission hospitals, from 4th to 9th July, 2016 and from 11th to 16th July, 2016. Through these contact courses, graduates from across the country - CMC Ludhiana, Duncan Hospital, Raxaul and St. John's Hospital, Bangalore - were provided hands-on training in Acute Trauma Care and Cardiac life Support, Respiratory and Orthopaedic procedures. At the end of the contact courses, they were assessed using the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE).

A selection of projects were presented during sessions, among which two studies titled 'Stress in troops deployed at Line of Control: Analysis and Approach' and 'Assesment of Knowledge and Awareness in Hospital Infection Control Measures among Nursing Staff of CSI Neyyoor Hospital, Kanyakumari' stood out.

These presentations were based on projects they had implemented in mission hospitals.

A total of 44 faculty members from different departments in CMC were involved in the diverse teaching sessions and assessment of the participants. The programme has been accepted to be given the Tamil Nadu Medical Council credit hour certificates of four hours.

Continuing Medical Education in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy The 4th Annual Continuing Medical Education in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy was held on 15th and 16 th July, 2016. It was attended by nearly 150 delegates, most of whom were Postgraduate students from medical colleges across the country. The aim of the CME was to update and enhance the knowledge and practical skill of the postgraduates and junior faculty.

The two-day CME started with a live video demonstration of the Melanocyte Keratinocyte Transplantation procedure by Dr. Somesh Gupta, Professor, AIIMS, New Delhi. A mock practical case viva discussion and OSCE was conducted, covering important topics like connective tissue diseases, Hansen’s disease, STI, immunobullous diseases and erythroderma by the visiting faculty. A new session introduced was a workshop on anaphylaxis simulation and BLS which was organised by Dr. Madurita Singh and team. This was complemented by lectures on wide-ranging topics on the second day delivered by faculty from CMC, AFMC-Pune, AIIMS-New Delhi, BJMC-Ahmedabad, Tata hospital, Kolkata, SLRTC, Karigiri and Chennai. Dermatopathology and Assessment & Physiotherapy in Leprosy were also included.

Mrs. X remembers dreaming about what her child would grow up to be, just a few years ago.

Those dreams had to be put on hold when she learned that her child would have special needs.

Despite consulting with multiple doctors, hoping to hear different, she was met with the same conclusive response – she would have a special child.

With time however, she came around to accepting that she would just have to learn more about her child than the average parent; she would need to do more; she would need to be more patient.

Yet, after her son’s birth, she realised the actuality of it was far more overwhelming than she expected. The weight of her son’s diagnosis and the uncertainty of his future hunched Works of art by special children at Nambikkai Nilayam her shoulders and exhausted her. Nambikkai Nilayam (facility for children with Intellectual Disability) trained her for the role of a special parent for three months to take care of her special child. Soon, she began to push herself, pouring all her energy into caring for him. In her words, “I have learned to see beyond imperfections and to give my son the best I can. Little effort, hard work and perseverance towards my child has paid off: today, I have integrated him into the society. I know now, I have been blessed with a miracle. I am a ‘Special Mom’”.

Nambikkai Nilayam has been on similar journeys with parents of special children for 38 years now, in the hope of gradually changing their perspective from despair to hope.

• Dr. Rohith Srinivas, Sr.Registrar pursuing his M.Ch in Paediatric Surgery, won the TPPS Annamalai Medal prize Paper at the TPPSCON 16 State Paediatric Surgery Conference held in Madurai between 15th-17th July, 2016 for his paper entitled “Testicular volume in a cohort of Prepubertal Indian Children”.

The following teams from CMC were honoured duly for excellence in their research paper presentations in Cognitio 2016: Oral paper presentation: • First prize: Harshdeep Acharya and Jivansha Dua for their study on 'Oxygen use in Emergency Department'.

• Second prize: Sujith Mathew John, Sheeba Sagar, Aparna and Sharon Joy (Batch of 2014) for their study on 'Risk factors for Hypercalcemia in patients with Tuberculosis'.

Poster presentation: • Second prize: Dan Anna Teddy and Vedavati Bandyopadhyay for their study on 'Babinski sign versus finger and foot tapping tests in Clinical Detection of Corticospinal Tract( CST) lesions'.

Other teams that presented papers included: • Anmol Jindal and Rohit Kumar Yenukoti: 'Evaluation of urine flow cytometry based analyzer UX 2000 and urine dipstick for the screening of urinary tract infections in Emergency Department'.

• Ahikam Devdason and Karun Saathveeg Sam: 'Study of the disease profile and outcome of the staff and students who attend the emergency department of a tertiary care hospital and college in southern India'.

• Arunava Saha: 'Vitamin B12 deficiency: Do acid suppressing medications have a role to play?'

• Abhijit Goyal Honavar, Kapil Dani, Annsmol Markose and Abhipsha Anuranjana: 'Seizures in the Emergency Department: Etiology and Compliance to Anti Epileptic Drugs'.

• Lingala Joel Prathap Raju and Sofia Mohan: 'Effect of Seasons, Dietary factors and Phases of Lunar cycle on the disease flare of Rheumatoid Arthritis'.

Memoranda Dr. Anna B. Pulimood, Professor of Pathology, is appointed Principal, CMC Vellore, for a five year term with effect from 20th September, 2016.

Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj's term as Acting General Superintendent is extended for a period of one year from 17th July, 2016.

Mr. C. Sunny Kuruvilla, Sr. Manager, is appointed Associate General Superintendent with effect from 11th July, 2016 until his superannuation.

Mr. Sukumar Solomon's term as Associate General Superintendent is extended for a period of one year from 1st July, 2016.

Dr. Emmanuel F. Kishore, Sr. Medical Officer is appointed Deputy Medical Superintendent (CMC Vellore, Chittoor Hospital) with effect from 16th July, 2016.

Retirements Mrs. Anbuselvi Selvaraj, Staff Nurse Gr. I Community Health Department, retired on 30th June, 2016 after 32 years of service to the institution. She completed the Auxiliary Nurse and Midwifery programme at CSI Hospital, Ikkadu in 1982, where she worked for two years before joining CMC’s Community Health Department on 9th August, 1984 as Auxiliary Nurse Midwife. She completed the General Nursing and Midwifery programme at the College of Nursing, CMC, between 1998 and 2001 and joined back at the Community Health Department.

Her husband, Mr. Michael Selvaraj, works as a Master Craftsman at the Military Engineering Services, Chennai.

They are blessed with two sons; their elder son, Mr. Rojaris, is an AHS alumnus (B.PT, Batch of 2008).

Mr. P. Julius, Optometrist Instructor Gr. I, Ophthalmology, retired on 30th June, 2016 following 29 years of service to the institution. He completed his Diploma in Optometry (1985 – 87) at Schell Eye Hospital and subsequently joined staff in this institution in 1987.

His wife, Mrs. Shanthi Julius works as a teacher at Vidyalayam, where their son, George John Constantine, is a student.

CMC thanks them for their years of service rendered to the institution and wishes God’s blessings on their retired lives.
