Dr. Kalpana Ernest, Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology retired on 15th March 2016 after 30 years of service to this institution. She was born in the CMC Hospital, Vellore and grew up in CMC campus. When the early missionaries to CMC needed a school for their children, it was her mother, Mrs. Florence Theodore who pioneered the work of the celebrated Vidyalayam School, in which she also had her schooling. Dr. Kalpana completed her MBBS course in CMC, Vellore and thereafter worked as medical officer in a couple of mission hospitals. In 1986 she returned to CMC and joined the department of Pharmacology as Tutor. She went on to do her postgraduate studies in the same discipline and continued her service there. In the year 1999, she was appointed as Professor and Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology and continued to lead the department till her superannuation. Her areas of interest included the fields of Toxicology, Innovations in medical teaching and Adverse Drug Reactions Monitoring. Organophosphorus compound poisoning, being a common problem in this country, she visited industries manufacturing the same to study the biological effects on the labourers involved and was able to offer recommendations to ensure their safety. With a natural ability to teach, she had considerable involvement in introducing novel teaching and testing methods in Pharmacology, borrowing ideas from other universities such as in Liverpool and South Africa, enabling students to be more responsive. Students enjoyed her classes and it was not uncommon to see them follow her after her lectures requesting her personal file with lecture notes. The department caters to UG, PG, Nursing and many Allied Health Science courses. Dr. Kalpana has exhibited a special ability to simplify scientific data and present it in a manner to suit the capacity of students. She has offered noteworthy support and encouragement for the effective working of the Clinical
