The Department of Hemato-Oncology Nursing, College of Nursing, organized a “Cancer Awareness Programme” in commemoration of the World Cancer Day 2016 on February 04, 2016 on the theme: “We can, I can”.The day began seeking God’s presence with a prayer song.

Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing and HOD, Specialty Nursing VI welcomed the gathering. Dr. Abraham Peedicayil, HOD, Gynae Oncology, Chief Guest of the programme emphasized the importance of cancer prevention and early detection. Dr. Simon Pavamani, Deputy Medical Superintendent, in his felicitation explained about the importance of cancer awareness programme and reiterated the need for early detection of cancer. Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, in her felicitation mentioned the statistics of cancer and appreciated the effort taken to organize the programme. Dr. Raju Titus Chacko, HOD, Medical Oncology offered his felicitation by describing the theme “We can, I can”. He explained how everyone, collectively or as individuals can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer. He also emphasized that the World Cancer Day is an opportunity to reflect on “what you can do: make a pledge and take action, make a difference to fight the fight against cancer”. Dr. Selvamani, HOD, Radiation therapy, in her felicitation shared the common myths and beliefs related to cancer.

Dr. Biju George, Professor, Hematology and Dr. Selva Titus Chacko also offered their felicitations.

Poster and Slogan writing competitions were conducted on the topic “Prevention of Cancer”. There was active participation from different departments of the institution. The following were the prize winners: Poster competition : I prize: Ms. Marina Ancy Antony and Ms. Pheba Philip (Fundamentals of Nursing), II prize: Ms. Padmini D. examination and testicular self examination, cervical cancer assessment and screening, counselling on alcohol and smoking de-addiction, role of diet in cancer prevention, radiation therapy highlight on other treatment modalities available for cancer in our hospital. The stalls were visited by many patients, patient attendants and local community. Cervical screening test positive cases were referred to Gynae Oncology. The event came to an end with a walkathon between CMC Hospital and South Poilce Station, Vellore.

About 200 student nurses and staff actively participated in the walkathon. The awareness programme was beneficial to many.

Hemato Oncology Nursing Workshop 2016 The Department of Hemato-Oncology Nursing, College of Nursing, organized a workshop on “Update on Cancer treatment : Chemotherapy and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation” on 12th and 13th February, 2016, with an aim to equip Hemato-Oncology nurses to enhance their knowledge and skill in cancer treatment in order to provide quality care. Dr. Raju Titus Chacko, Associate Director, Professor and Head, Medical Oncology emphasized the need for conducting such workshops on a regular basis to meet the growing challenges in cancer nursing. Mrs. Florence Segharan, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, congratulated and appreciated the team effort and encouraged all the participants to utilize the opportunity provided. Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, CON, Professor and Head, Hemato- Oncology Nursing felicitated the gathering and motivated the participants to acquire maximum learning from the workshop and evolve as ‘change agents’ in their own institutions. Mrs.Amalorpavamari Lucas, Professor, CON and Organizing Secretary elaborated the activities of the workshop. The workshop was attended by 51 nurses from four different states of India. Eminent speakers including Dr.Alok Srivastava,Professor, Haematology, Dr. Raju Titus Chacko, Professor and Head, Medical Oncology, Dr.Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, CON, Dr. Biju George, Professor, Haematology, Mrs. Amalorpavamari Lucas, Professor, CON, Dr. Ashish Singh, Associate Professor, Medical Oncology and others delivered in-depth knowledge about the current trends in cancer treatment and it’s challenges for the health care team. Skill demonstrations done on various procedures like Hickman’s catheter dressing, PICC dressing, Infusa port needling and dressing, Chemotherapy preparation, administration and disposal, cytotoxic drug spillage management were well appreciated. The positive reviews at the end of the workshop revealed that it was essential and had helped the nurses to update their knowledge and skill in cancer treatment to provide highest standard care.

The Tamil Nadu Nurses andMidwives Council accredited the workshop with 11 credit hours.

Congratulations • Dr. Ronald Albert Benton Carey, Associate Professor, General Medicine won the first prize for his oral presentation- ‘Varicella Encphalitis - a case series’ in APICON 2016 held in Hyderabad on 27th - 31st January 2016.

Hanumantha Rao Medal for 2nd bestPG paper presentation" for presenting topic "Comparative evaluation of ischial contoinment socket and quadrilateral socket for functional ability in persons with transfemoral amputation".

• Mr. T. Suresh Raj, Medical Gas Section, Mechanical Engineering Department has received the best blood donor award "Kuruthi Kodai Vallal" in Vellore District. The award was presented by Dr. G. Viswanathan, Chairman, VIT on February 20, 2016.

Workshop on Breast Feeding Practices and Advocacy A workshop on Breast Feeding Practices and Advocacy was organized by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecological Nursing, College of Nursing on 17th February 2016. This one day workshop was designed to enable the nurses to understand the importance of exclusive breast feeding and acquire the knowledge and skills to promote mothers to practice breast feeding.

The workshop started with the devotion led by Ms.Saramma, Chaplain. Mrs. Ebenezer Ellen Benjamin, Professor and Head, OG Nursing & Organizing Chairperson of the workshop welcomed the gathering and introduced the proceedings of the workshop. Dr. Sridhar, Professor and Head Neonatology unit II introduced the chief guest for the workshop.

Dr.Chandra, Retired Professor, Institute of Social Pediatrics, Stanley Medical College, Chennai addressed the gathering.

She emphasized the need for breast feeding and also narrated the history of Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative in Tamil Nadu. She also urged all the participants to become activists and be persistent in bringing about changes in the society.

Dr. Vinitha Ravindran, Deputy Dean, CON, Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent and Dr. Niranjan Thomas, Professor and Head Department of Neonatology offered their felicitations. About 50 participants from hospitals in and around Vellore as well as from CMC attended the workshop. Various aspects related to Breast Feeding Practices and Advocacy was covered by resource faculty Mrs. Ebenezer Ellen Benjamin, Mrs. Dorathy Devakirubai, Mrs. Nirmala Manoharan, Mrs. Mories Shankar, Mrs. Leena Rani and Mrs. Jane Emily Beatrice. Training was also given on observing and assessing adequacy of breast milk, hand expressions, Paladai feeding and exercise to increase the secretion of

Breast milk. There were lively and enjoyable interactions between the participants and the resource faculty. The Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai accredited this workshop with 7 credit hours.

The workshop concluded with responses from the participants and from the observer from Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council to the workshop Mrs. Saitha, Professor, Arun College of Nursing. Mrs. Florence Segaran, Deputy Nursing Superintendent offered her felicitations at the valedictory and distributed the certificates to the participants.

This programme was ended with vote of thanks by Mrs. Dorathy Devakirubai organizing secretary of the workshop.

5th RePORT Joint Leadership Group Meeting The Department of Pulmonary Medicine hosted the 5th RePORT Joint Leadership Group meeting of the RePORT consortium. The Union ministry of science and technology, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID, USA) and the office of AIDS Research of the US National Institutes of Health are involved in facilitating collaborative research under the Indo-US vaccine action programme, to address the growing challenges in controlling tuberculosis in India. India has not achieved the desired results in reducing the prevalence of tuberculosis despite launching the revised national TB control programme. With the TB problem in India spiraling out of control and reduction of the problem becoming a distant dream, this collaborative project was conceived 4 years ago to facilitate global TB experts who endeavored to get involve with research in India to partner with researchers in USA. The result of this was the formation of ‘the Regional Prospective Observational Research in Tuberculosis(RePORT) consortium, comprising of research teams from Indian centres–CMC, Vellore; JIPMER, Pondicherry, BJMC, Pune, NIRT, Chennai; Blue Peter centre, Hyderabad and MV Institute, Chennai – with their collaborating US centres – Washington, Boston, John’s Hopkins, Texas and Massachusetts universities. The selection of these sites was made on the basis of keen competition between several potential sites from whom these 5 teams were selected. More than 70 researchers including the leadership and key members of the consortium from both the US and Indian came together at the Examination hall, CMC College campus for their 5th Leadership meeting to review the progress made and identify future goals including novel areas of research. Among the research projects in the pipe line, the consortium is on the verge of commencing multicenter studies to address the comparative efficacy of the locally made Tuberculin reagents, in comparison with the International standard and clinical trials on a new TB Vaccine. Industries that develop research and diagnostic tools, presented their plans to launch new products that had been development. Dr. K.Vijay Raghavan, Secretary, DBT addressed the group highlighting the challenges ahead.

Dr. Ida Scudder Inter-School Games and Athletics Event

Dr. Ida Scudder Inter-School Games and Athletics event (II year) took place from February 11, 2016 to February 13, 2016 in memory of our Founder, Dr. Ida Scudder. This event should have been held during Founder’s Day celebration in the month of December, 2015 but due to incessant rainfall this was postponed and the event was inaugurated on February 11, 2016 by the General Superintendent (Ag), Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj in Oval Ground, Bagayam campus. Following events were conducted for Boys and Girls between the age group of 12-18 years; Football, Throw ball, 100 m dash, 200 m dash, 1500 m dash, 4*100 m relay, Long jump, High jump, Shot put, Javelin throw and Discuss throw. Around 550 students from 25 schools across Vellore District participated in the event. The overall Championships were won by Shanthiniketan School, Vellore for boys and Odugathur Government School for girls.

Obituary : Dr. George Ani Mathew Dr. George Ani Mathew, Associate Professor, ENT V, husband of Mrs. Annie Jacob, Lecturer, Clinical Psychologist (Palliative Medicine Department) son-in-law of Mrs. Sara Jacob (retired HOD of Dietary Department) and Late Mr. Jacob Varghese (retired Associate General Superintendent) on 28th February 2016.

George was a talented surgeon, who would tackle any surgery, be it a complicated twisted airway or advanced laryngeal cancers with the same calmness. Soft spoken, humble, highly conscientious, hardworking, much loved doctor, he was generous with his money, time and skills. He regularly did operating camps at North Indian mission hospitals. He was a fine gentleman with supreme love for humanity which reflected in his medical care and friendship. He took time to share the joys and sorrows of all the members of the ENT team whoever they may be. George’s strong, silent Christian faith and conviction which he firmly stood by did not deter him from being gentle, soft-spoken and much cherished family member, friend and doctor. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose lives he touched. The void he leaves will never be filled.
