College of Nursing Graduation 2016

The solemn Graduation Ceremony of the College of Nursing witnessed 198 undergraduates and 28 postgraduates of nursing, crossing an important milestone in their professional life, on February 09, 2016 in the Scudder Auditorium. As per the tradition, the procession of graduates and faculty flanked by the Jasmine Chain, marked the beginning of the Ceremony. Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director, CMC, Vellore chaired the ceremony. The Chief Guest for the Ceremony was Dr. Kaye Frances Roberts-Thomson, Former Dean and Head of School of Dentistry, University of Adelaide, South Australia. The chief guest in her address to the graduates explicated three aspects of practice required for any health practitioner: practicing the acquired knowledge and skills, practicing faith and practicing compassion and justice. She urged the fresh graduates to fortify the knowledge and skills acquired during the years of professional training by inculcating an attitude of lifetime learning.

Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing, in her charge to the graduates, encouraged them to continue learning from every encounter and patient care experience and face challenges with courage and confidence. Calling on for commitment, compassion and competence, she persuaded the graduates to be ambassadors for Christ and for the institution. The graduates were presented with awards by the Dean and with the College pin by the Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee. The prizes were distributed by Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, Principal, CMC, Vellore and the Special Awards were given away by the Chief Guest.

The Best Outgoing student in Diploma Nursing Programme was Ms. Kalaivani M. She was also the recipient of the Alice Jane David Memorial Gold Medal, instituted from this year in memory of the former Nursing Superintendent. Ms. Shalini Sasi in the B.Sc. Nursing programme received the shield for Outstanding Academic Performance and A. Kuruvilla Gold Medal for being the Best Outgoing student. Ms. Ida Caroline was the Best Outgoing student in the Post Basic Nursing Programme. The Alumni Award 2015 was conferred upon Mrs. Accamma J. Chacko for her dedicated work

The Graduation Ceremony was preceded by an equally thought provoking Baccalaureate Service on February 07, 2016, where the graduates re-committed their lives to the service of the humanity at large. Dr. Deepak Abaraham, the special speaker, shared about the Scripture Verse “What is it we have that we have not received” and reminded the graduates to make service as a priority and remain true to the calling. Overall, the ceremony was an opportunity for the graduates and faculty to look back with gratitude and look forward with fortitude.

11 th CME and Workshop on Fundamentals of Critical Care

The Division of Critical Care successfully conducted the 11th CME and Workshop on Fundamentals of Critical Care from 11th to 13th February 2016 at Paul Brand building. The three days CME and Workshop was formally inaugurated by Dr. Jayarani Premkumar, Former Nursing Superintendent and Professor, Emritus of Medical Surgical Nursing. She enthralled the delegates with her speech filled with interaction such as asking questions and explaining the need for updating the knowledge and skills to managing the critically ill patients. She was happy to state that the Division of Critical Care in CMC is at par with any other institutions in the country and care is certainly far superior than is available elsewhere in the country.

Dr. Solomon Sathishkumar, Dr. Ebor Jacob, Dr. Premila Lee, Dr. Selva Titus offered their felicitation. Dr. K. Subramani, Head of Division of Critical Care had given the purpose, aim and objective of the CME and he was happy to mention that the Division of Critical Care was doing this programme for the 11th year in a row. Totally 74 delegates had benefited from this workshop. The delegates comprised of doctors, nursing personnel, critical care therapists from various hospitals and also from mission hospitals all over the country and from our institution.

All the sessions were interesting and modules included lectures, hands-on stations and interactive sessions on very specialized topics such as communication, ACLS, BLS, Arrhythmias, Intubation, Difficult airway, Paediatric airway, Cricothyroidotomy, CVC insertion, ICD insertion, Sonology, Intraosseous access and a separate ventilation session for doctors, nurses and technicians. The valedictory function was held on 13th February 2016 at 1.00 pm. Awards and prizes were given to the winners in the Quiz and Poster competitions.

World Diabetes Day Celebrations In commemoration of the World Diabetes Day, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at CMC conducted an essay and painting competition for school students and Quiz programme for teachers around Vellore city on 13 th February, 2016. The topics for the competitions are: Essay Competition : If you are given an opportunity to make school health policies regarding healthy Eating – What would you do? Painting : Junk food vs Healthy eating. Teachers Quiz : General Health & Non communicable Disease (Scientific aspects and History). (Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Cardio Vascular Diseases and Obesity). More than 32 schools 117 students and 52 teachers participated in the competitions. The visually delightful paintings were judged by Dr. Priya Abraham, Department of Dermatology, Karigiri Hospital, Dr. Vinay Kuruvilla, Department of Orthopaedics and Dr. Shiny Susan Samuel, Department of Dental Unit-2. The Painting Competition, contested amongst 36 schools from Vellore and the first prize went to Ms. Keerthana. H from Sun Beam Matriculation School, Second prize went to Mr. Keerthi Vasan from Shrishti Matriculation School and the third place shared by Ms. Ramya Shree from Sunbeam Matriculation School and Mr. Rupesh Kumar. K.N. from Shanthinikethan Matriculation School. Five consolation prizes were awarded to Mr. Hemanth, Sunbeam CBSC School, Mr. P. Sumanth from Spark School, Ms. G. Reshma from T.M.K.V Girls Higher Secondary School and Ms. Vinothini from Vani Vidyalaya Higher Secondary School and B. Vincent from Don Bosco Higher Secondary School. The Teachers quiz competition, was closely contested amongst five schools and after six exciting rounds, Mrs. S. Jamuna and Mrs. S. Paulin Rebekah from St. Marks Matriculation Higher Secondary School bagged the first place followed by Mrs. Bharathi Kumar and Mrs. Malathy T. from Sun Beam Matriculation Higher Secondary School in the second place and Mrs.Chitra and Mrs. Shenbagam from Shristi Matriculation Higher Secondary School in the third place. The fun filled celebrations of the afternoon had a lasting impression on the young minds, who had turned up in large numbers.

Congratulations • Dr. Nihal Thomas, Professor and Head of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, was invited for The JIPMER Scientific Society Annual External Faculty Oration for the year: 2015-2016 at JIPMER, Pondicherry on February 16, 2016.

• Dr. Vimalin Samuel, Assistant Professor, Vascular Surgery won the 3rd prize for his paper titled “Does venous insufficiency co-exist with lymphedema in India?” at the 9th Venous Association of India Conference, held in Jaipur.

• Dr. Rajasekar A., Assistant Professor, Dr. Varsha A.V. and Dr. Suresh Kumaran, Senior Registrar in Post-doctoral fellowship in Cardiac Anaesthesia, Department of Anaesthesia made podium presentations at the 12th to 14th February IACTACON 2016 held at Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay, Chennai and won best paper awards.

• Dr. Asem Rangita Chanu, Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation has been awarded “Dr. Ansiya Vasanth Award for Best Research Paper titled “Role of Rehabilitation in Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy patient”.

• Dr. Aneez Joesph, 2nd year Medicine Postgraduate, Department of Medicine Unit-3, has won the 1st prize in her platform presentation on “Haemolytic uremic syndrome among snake bite patients” in APICON 2016 at Hyderabad held in January 2016.

• The following candidates who were successful in the Postgraduate Higher Specialty Examination held in February 2016 D.M. Clinical Haematology - Dr. Reashma Roshan; M.Ch.Neurosurgery (3 years) - Dr. Brijesh Kumar Tiwari.

• Medical Physics Student’s Guinness Record Attempt : On Republic Day, a first year Medical Physics student, Mr. Winfred Michael Raj of Christian Medical College, Vellore, took an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records by solving 111 Rubik’s cubes while cycling in a little over than two hours surpassing the minimum of 30 cubes set by the Records committee. He started the attempt by half past 11 o’clock in front of the Gault Library and took a circuit of 100 meters. Two witnesses from the World Cubers’ Association have witnessed the event to the Guinness World Records which was also captured uninterrupted on video cameras. He is already a National Record holder for solving 66 cubes in 60 mins while cycling.

Cochrane Library National Award Ceremony Cochrane Library National Award Ceremony: The Wiley International Publishers conducted an online Quiz programme through Cochrane Online Library and awarded first 3 winners at the national level. Mr. Vasanthakumar Velusamy, Biostatistician, Wellcome Research Lab, bagged the third prize. The Department of Library Services organized the awarding ceremony in the Dodd Memorial Library Conference Room on the 16th of February 2016. Mr. S.R. Varun, Regional Manager of Wiley presented the award to the winner.

Dr. Joyson Soundrarajan, the Senior Librarian and the Head of Library Services Department, highlighted the role and functions of Cochrane Library. Mr. R. Senthil Kumar, Senior Librarian in his vote of thanks stressed the need of the Online Library and e-books and he encouraged the others to participate in such events in future.

Retirements Mrs. Selvamani Winston, S/N Gr. I retired on February 12, 2016 after 17 years of service to the Institution.

She completed GNM course in 1976 from Mary Lott Lyles Hospital, Madanapalli and served as a Staff Nurse in the same hospital from 1979 to 1981. She joined CMC as Staff Nurse in 1981 and served various areas such as ‘M’ ward, ‘O2’ ward and operation theatre for 7 years. She left CMC in 1989 to go abroad and worked there as Staff Nurse for 9 years. She joined back in CMC in 1999 and worked in “Main Operation Theatre” till 2002 (Ortho OR and Cardio Thoracic OR). She then moved to work in Day Care theatre. She has been a very sincere and cheerful Staff Nurse who contributed significantly to the general management of Day Care OR. Her husband, Mr. Winston owns a business. Her older daughter, Ms. Princy completed Diploma in Nursing and Post Basic B.Sc. in Nursing at CMC, Vellore. Her younger daughter, Ms. Lizzy helps her father in business.

Mr. S. Senguttuvan Victor, Sr. Accountant Gr.I, Accounts Department retired on February 16, 2016 after 31 years of service to the institution. His wife, Mrs. Hena worked as a Staff Nurse in ‘M’ Ward for 8 years. His older Son, Mr. Joshuva Kingsly Jebaraj is a Transplant Co-ordinator in Ramachandra University and 2nd daughter, Ms. Jenin Jebarani is doing 4th year B.Sc. Nursing in CMC. Mr. M. Muthuvel, Sel.Gr. R.C.O, Gr.II, RUHSA Department retired on February 26, 2016 after 32 years of service to the institution. His wife, Mrs. K. Kamala is working as a Teacher in Government School. His oldest son, Mr. Thirumugam is a Scientist in German Leprosy Research Institute and 2nd son, Mr. Vivekanandan is working in Agasthia International Research Foundation as a Research Scholar.

He has been a recipient of “John Sekar’s Memorial Essay Competition ‘A’ ward (Tamil)” for the year 2015.
