Dr. Banumathi Ramakrishna, Professor and Head, Department of Pathology, retired on January 14, 2016 after 35 years of dedicated service to the institution. She graduated from Coimbatore Medical College in 1978 and joined CMC as a Junior Research Officer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1980. She did her postgraduation in the Department of Pathology from 1982 and thereafter joined as a faculty in 1989. During the 2 years (from 19871989) that she spent in Adelaide, Australia, she worked at Queen Elizabeth Hospital with Dr. Philip Allen, and at Flinders Medical Centre with Dr. Svante Orell a renowned cytopathologist and Dr. Pauline Hall a renowned hepatopathologist. After her return in 1989, she established hepatopathology in the Department and has been specializing in that field and also in liver transplant pathology after her Senior Fellowship training in USA in 1995 at Tufts University, Boston and at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh. She went on sabbatical leave from December 2002 - 2004 and worked at Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman. The Senior Fellowship training in UK in 2009 for neonatal cholestatic liver diseases at King’s College Hospital, London enabled her to set up immunohistochemistry for the diagnosis of Progressive Familial Int rahepatic Cholestasis in CMC, serving as a referral centre for many hospitals in South India. She has published many original research papers in international and national journals, focussing on Atypical Copper Cirrhosis, Non Cirrhotic Intrahepatic Portal Hypertension and Chronic Viral Hepatitis. She has been an undergraduate and postgraduate examiner and guided many postgraduate dissertations. She has been an invited speaker at many national pathology CMEs and conferences and is one of the best recognised hepatopathologists in India. Dr. Banumathi is a member of many academic societies and is a reviewer for national and international journals. Dr. Banumathi took over as Head of the Department of Pathology in August 2013.
