Dr. Banumathi Ramakrishna, Professor and Head, Department of Pathology, retired on January 14, 2016 after 35 years of dedicated service to the institution. She graduated from Coimbatore Medical College in 1978 and joined CMC as a Junior Research Officer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1980. She did her postgraduation in the Department of Pathology from 1982 and thereafter joined as a faculty in 1989. During the 2 years (from 19871989) that she spent in Adelaide, Australia, she worked at Queen Elizabeth Hospital with Dr. Philip Allen, and at Flinders Medical Centre with Dr. Svante Orell a renowned cytopathologist and Dr. Pauline Hall a renowned hepatopathologist. After her return in 1989, she established hepatopathology in the Department and has been specializing in that field and also in liver transplant pathology after her Senior Fellowship training in USA in 1995 at Tufts University, Boston and at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh. She went on sabbatical leave from December 2002 - 2004 and worked at Royal Hospital, Muscat, Oman. The Senior Fellowship training in UK in 2009 for neonatal cholestatic liver diseases at King’s College Hospital, London enabled her to set up immunohistochemistry for the diagnosis of Progressive Familial Int rahepatic Cholestasis in CMC, serving as a referral centre for many hospitals in South India. She has published many original research papers in international and national journals, focussing on Atypical Copper Cirrhosis, Non Cirrhotic Intrahepatic Portal Hypertension and Chronic Viral Hepatitis. She has been an undergraduate and postgraduate examiner and guided many postgraduate dissertations. She has been an invited speaker at many national pathology CMEs and conferences and is one of the best recognised hepatopathologists in India. Dr. Banumathi is a member of many academic societies and is a reviewer for national and international journals. Dr. Banumathi took over as Head of the Department of Pathology in August 2013. improvement in the financial revenue for the Department. She facilitated and improved the functioning of Pathology Work Station and took strict measures to clear long pending autopsy reports. She introduced a prize for the best outgoing postgraduate student in Pathology, in memory of late Dr. Hemalatha Krishnaswami, former Professor of Pathology. She conducted pathology CME for the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Chapter, IAPM in 2014. Along with Hepatology unit, she organized a Hepatopathology CME with invited experts from UK and US and conducted a workshop on liver pathology which included gross and microscopic sessions, first of its kind in South India, in January 2015. She has also initiated preparations towards NABL accreditation. Her recent trainees with the gained experience in hepatopathology will take on the responsibilities. Dr. Banumathi’s husband, Dr. B.S.Ramakrishna is Director of Gastroenterology at SRM Institutes for Medical Science, Chennai, having retired from CMC. They have two sons; Mr. Rahul is an investment banker, married and settled in London. Dr. Kartik, belonging to the CMC MBBS batch of 2002, is pursuing his Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship in USA. We thank Dr. Banumathi Ramakrishna for her immense contributions to the Department of Pathology and the institution. We pray for God’s continual blessing on her and her family as she enters a new phase of retired life. INA UGURA TION OF THE NEW NURSING STUDENT S' HOSTEL INAUGURA UGURATION STUDENTS' The morning of January 22, 2016 dawned with palpable enthusiasm and buoyancy for the nursing fraternity in the College of Nursing. With its planning spanning almost over a decade and successful execution of those plans surpassing all the hurdles, the new Nursing Students’ Hostel was inaugurated on January 22, 2016. The inauguration was not just a ceremony; it was more an occasion of thanksgiving graced by more than 500 people. The Council Chairman, Dr. M.C. Mathew, administrators, representatives of the CMC Council, faculty, staff and students gathered, in one accord, to celebrate and thank God for the fruition of concerted efforts of many. Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing, offered a hearty welcome to the august audience. After a time of prayer by Rev. Ananthi Arputha Mary, Head of Chaplaincy, Bible reading by Ms. Deborah Jeyaseeli, SNA Vice President and a song of thanksgiving by the nursing students, the new hostel plaque was unveiled by Dr. M.C. Mathew, Council Chairman. Bishop D.K. Sahu, Former Bishop, CNI, offered the prayer of dedication. This was followed by an address by Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, in which she elucidated the need for a new hostel, retraced the steps of planning and brainstorming involved in the building of the hostel and reminisced with gratitude about all those who have contributed to the realization of this long-felt need. Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director, in his felicitations, congratulated the multipronged team involved in the project and especially appreciated the diligent planning of the architects and industrious work of the builders. Dr. M.C. Mathew offered his felicitations by reminding about the facets of community living. He exhorted the students to utilize the given facility to enlarge the inner space within each of them by transcending above the differences to be transformed for a purposeful living. He also reminded them to uphold the sanctity of mutual space by respecting and serving each other, in line with the motto ‘Not to be served, but to serve’. The inauguration was deemed as the best occasion to publicly thank the team of architects and builders of this enormous project. Dr. Premila Lee, the Nursing Superintendent and Mr. Ebenezer Sundarraj, the General Superintendent presented tokens of appreciation to Mr. George Jacob and Mr. Bobby Benedict respectively. Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos Episcopa, offered the closing prayer and benediction. Dr. Vinitha Ravindran, Deputy Dean in her vote of thanks, thanked every one involved in making the day a reality. Following this, Dr. Sanjeeth Peter, Council Vice-Chairman symbolically opened the hostel by cutting the ribbon and entreated for God’s presence to permeate every inch of the hostel. The inauguration was followed by a sumptuous fellowship breakfast. RETIREMENT Mr. J. T. John Joel, Sel. Gr. II MCTT, OPD Services retired on January 29, 2016 after 34 years of service to the institution. He joined as statistical clerk cum punch operator in JPH (Joint Health Project). Community Health Department in 1975 and worked in various Department. In 1994 he was promoted as MCTT and transferred from Medical Records to OPD Services and he was posted as MCTT supervisor in 2008. He finished his BCS in Serampore University and worked as a part time religious works in OPD areas apart from his service. His wife, Mrs.Catherine Chandrakala, Head Mistress of Kalinjur Middle School. They have a son and a daughter. Daughter, Mrs. Lucinda Damaris Pretty M.Sc.(N) finished B.Sc. Nursing in CMC and son, Mr. Ronald Thomvic Maradona, BOT working as a Tutor in O.T Department in CMC. CMC thanks him for his many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes him a blessed retired life.

The award was presented by Sh. J.P Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Government of India at New Delhi, on January 19, 2016. INAUGURA UGURATED NEW FFA A CILITIES INA UGURA TED All the following facilities were inaugurated to the Glory of God during the Council meeting held on January 21, 2016 through video conferencing from Senate Hall, Carman Block. The Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy briefed the gathering about these facilities and appreciated the General Services and Engineering team. “Eden garden”, previously a solid waste dump yard (approx. 1 acre) situated between DJ hostel and Men’s hostel in College Campus was converted into a beautiful garden by in-house gardening team. A Sewage Treatment Plant of 300 KLD capacity to recycle 3 lakhs litres of waste water that will be put to use for gardening and flushing toilets has been erected in College campus; Solar panels on top of MTS ward (20 KWp), ASHA building (10 KWp), Paul Brand building (20 KWp), RT building (25 KWp), I ward (25 KWp) and L ward (25 KWp) were installed by Electrical Engineering team; An Air-conditioned bus for the faculty commute from College and other campuses to reduce contributing to the growing throng of cars in the Vellore city roads and ease the traffic congestion in the City. MRI DEDIC ATION DEDICA The MRI facility has been expanded by the additional 4th equipment - 1.5T Magnetom Avanto fit by Siemens. It was dedicated by Rev. Dr. Finney Alexander in the august presence of the Council members via the newly acquired Video conferencing facility on January 21, 2016 in ASHA Radiology extension in the hospital campus. The Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy greeted the department. The Professor and Head of the Department of Radiology, Dr. Shyamkumar N. Keshava briefed about the various changes needed to be done in terms of space to accommodate the new machine to facilitate “Imaging with care” the motto of the Radiology Department. With the acquiring of this machine we will be able to cater to an additional number of patients thus bringing down the waiting time. The programme was well attended by the department members and well wishers. REPUBLIC D AY CELEBRA TIONS DA CELEBRATIONS Christian Medical College, Vellore celebrated India's 67th Republic Day on January 26, 2016. On this day, in 1950, we the people of India gave ourselves a new Constitution, whose Preamble proclaimed India a 'Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic.' In the Hospital Campus, the Associate Director, Dr. Anil K. Kuruvilla unfurled the National Flag. He, along with Mr. I.K. Chellasamy, the Chief Security Officer, reviewed the parade and inspected the guard of honour given by the SIS Security Platoon. In the College Campus, Dr. Thambu David Sudarsanam, Head of Medicine-II hoisted the flag and reviewed the parade. REPUBLIC D AY R UN 20 16 DA RUN 201 The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation organized the Republic Day Run on 26th January 2016 as part of their Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Rehabilitation Institute founded by Dr. Mary Verghese in 1966. Dr. Sunil Chandy flagged off this run in which more than 800 people including specially abled and wheel chair users participated in various categories of 5 km, 10 km and Kid’s Relay. The theme of this event was “Right to the Right Wheelchair”. The funds collected as donations and registration fees towards this event will be used to provide wheelchairs for patients in Rehabilitation Institute.
