Dr. Sarah Ninan, Professor and Head of Anaesthesiology Unit-I retired on January 13, 2016 after 27 years of dedicated service to the institution. Dr. Sarah completed her undergraduation from Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad and her initial anaesthesiology training in Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore. She worked for a brief period in Bethesda Hospital, Ambur following which she joined the Christian Medical College in 1987 as a Post graduate. She has been a faculty in the Department of Anaesthesiology since 1989 and headed the department between 2008 to 2012 and continued there after as the Head of Anaesthesiology Unit-I. During her study leave, Dr. Sarah trained in Newcastle, UK. Thereafter she worked in the Department of Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Portland, US. Dr.Sarah’s special area of the interest has been ultrasound guided regional blocks, airway management, urology and renal transplantation. She has been actively involved in ensuring high standards in patient care and training. She has organised several workshops and CMEs in these disciplines. She has been extremely generous in providing professional opportunities to younger colleagues and encouraging them in their pursuit of professional excellence. Dr. Sarah has presented in various conferences and has several publications to her credit. During her tenure as the Head of the Department of anaesthesiology, she was instrumental in implementing the preanaesthetic clinic, offering greater flexibility of the surgical lists and shortened waiting list for surgeons. She was always very conscious of the heightened stress and the long working hours of the junior anaesthesiologists and introduced the shift system in anaesthesiology which has significantly contributed towards, improved patient care and quality of life to the junior faculty. She was aware of all the practical problems faced by the juniors and worked untiringly to overcome and provide better working environment for all the staff. She introduced longer working hours for the OR cafeteria, to benefit the junior staff in Operation Theatres.
