The Library Services has installed a new RFID based automation system which was dedicated on January 6, 2016 at Dodd Memorial Library. The dedication service opened with a prayer song. Dr. Solomon Satheeshkumar, Vice-Principal welcomed the gathering. Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj, Head, CHIPS and the General Superintendent (Ag.) highlighted the advancement of the project and Rev. Pearson dedicated the new facility. Dr. Alfred Job Daniel , Principal offered the felicitation while Dr. Newton, Chief Librarian and Head of Library Services declared it open. Dr. Joyson Soundrarajan proposed the vote of thanks.

The new facility helps the user to borrow books from the library through an Automatic Checkout Counter without assistance and the process of returning is made easy through the drop box which will automatically return the books in the borrowers name.

The library books can be easily tracked through the new system and so many other facilities are added for the benefit of the user.

The CHIPS Department will soon release a mobile App, through which the CMC community can easily find out the availability of any book in the Library.

DR. V V.. NEW T ON RETIRES Dr. V. Newton, the Chief Librarian and the Head of Library Services Department, is superannuating from his 37 long years of committed service to the institution on January 07, 2016. He joined in CMC as Librarian In-charge of College Hill Library in 1978, which was renamed as Gault Library.

Dr. Newton did his schooling at Union Christian Higher Secondary School, Madurai and went on to study B.Sc. Zoology at Vellasamy Nadar College, Madurai. He got his Bachelor’s Degree in Library Science from Madurai Kamaraj University. The CMC management encouraged and deputed him to go for higher studies and he went to the prestigious University of Madras for his Masters Degree in Library and Information Science in 1985. After his return from the study leave, he continued as Librarian in Gault and was made Head of the Library Services in the year 1991. He completed his M.Phil in the year 2003, and was awarded Ph.D in 2008 from Bharathidasan University, Tirucharappalli. Dr. Newton contributed a lot to the department and also to the field of Library and Information science in India. He has organized several workshops, seminars etc. Greenstone Digital Library was one among the workshop which was organized in collaboration with Madras Library Association (MALA) which is the oldest professional body in India. He also organized a workshop for Librarians on “Preservation of Library Documents jointly with 'Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Science'. He is the President for this forum since 2004. A two days Regional Workshop on “Scientific Writing” was successfully organized under the leadership of Dr. Newton which was a joint venture with University of Madras, Chennai.

He is a life member in various professional bodies and also served in various capacities in those associations. He is the founding president for Library and Information Science Professionals Association of Tamilnadu, (LIPSAT). Recognizing his services the Medical Library Association of India awarded him the“Best Medical Librarian in India in the year 2014”.

He actively took part in inter-discipline activities of the institution especially during graduation and in the selection process of students admission. His involvement in the staff retreat in Tamil, organized by the Chaplaincy Department was laudable.

In addition he has been an external examiner and Doctoral Committee member for Ph.D programmes in the University of Madras and Bharathidasan University, Tirucharappalli. He has been an observer and evaluator in the neighbouring institutes. He actively participated in the developmental action plan in Damam University Library, Saudi Arabia.The present Gault and Dood Libraries were properly organized and developed during his tenure as Head of Library Services. To his credit, he has published more than 12 research papers which are peer reviewed and published. He had been a resource person for many professional workshops and training programmes in the field of Library and Information Science. After his superannuation, he will be a visiting faculty to the University of Madras and also be involving in building the Kingdom of God through 'Voice of the Shepherd Ministries', Vellore. CMC thanks him for his many years of dedicated services to the institution and wishes him a blessed retired life.

MERITORIOUS CULT MERIT ORIOUS SER VICE A WARDS F OR FFA A CUL T Y IN MISSION HOSPIT ALS Dr. Oby Cherian is the son of Dr. Mary Cherian, alumnus of the MBBS batch of 1946 and Padma Bhushan Dr. Jacob Cherian, one of the founders of the Christian Fellowship Hospital, Oddanchatram. In 1965, his parents established the Christian Hospital, Ambilikkai, where Dr. Oby has served for close to three decades.

Undoubtedly, growing up in this Fellowship fostered in him a sensitivity to the spiritual and physical dimensions of the suffering of common people.

Dr. Oby joined Christian Medical College, Vellore for his undergraduate medical studies in 1975. He married his batch mate, Dr. Sheila Cherian-many years previously, their paths had crossed as young children in Vidyalayam! Following their graduation, they returned to the Christian Hospital Ambilikkai, a place Dr. Oby calls home. The Hospital had initially been started for Leprosy and TB patients.

Today, it is a multi-speciality secondary hospital with 248 beds catering to the population of Dindigul and the surrounding districts. In addition, there are training and rehabilitation centres, educational institutions and a host of developmental activities that have transformed the lives of thousands of people living in what was once a remote drought prone area.

Dr. Oby came to CMC in 1983 for his post graduation in Surgery, following which he returned to Ambilikkai. Along with his demanding clinical work, he assumed responsibility as the Medical Superintendent of the hospital, dealing with administrative issues and their many challenges. Over the course of these past three decades, Dr. Oby has served four terms as Medical Superintendent in three different mission hospitals. After five years of working in General Surgery, he felt called to super-specialize and chose Urology as there were no urologists in the entire district. He obtained the M.Ch. degree in Urology from CMC in 1996.

Today, Dr. Oby is a consultant Urologist in the Christian Hospital, Ambilikkai, and the only urologist in a 30 km radius.

He shares his expertise with several other mission hospitals and trains DNB Rural Surgery residents in the Christian Fellowship Hospital, Oddanchatram. He has also spent time in mission hospitals in Assam, Bihar, Odisha and Nagaland.

Dr. Oby has been very active within the wider Christian Medical Mission through the Ashram Fellowship and the Evangelical Medical Fellowship of India. His gifts of a deep faith and rich interpersonal skills have enabled him to be a counsellor to many over the years. With his simplicity and humility, he is an inspiring mentor to many young doctors. He is a prolific writer of articles of faith and Christian thought in magazines. His other interests include music and Bible study. Above all, Dr. Oby carries with him a conscious awareness of the great privilege it is to be called to serve Him without counting the cost.

It is only fitting that in the year in which the Christian Hospital, Ambilikkai is celebrating its golden jubilee that Christian Medical College Vellore honours Dr. Oby Cherian with the Meritorious Service Award for 2015 for fulfilling the motto of his alma mater ‘Not to be ministered unto but to minister’.

SENIOR TRAINING FELLOWSHIPS (STF) 2016 Applications are invited for Senior Training Fellowships (STF) for the year 2016 from staff who have not previously been awarded STF. This Fellowship programme is run in the partnership with our overseas Friends of Vellore organizations.

Objectives: (a) The purpose of the fellowship is to provide opportunities for members of staff who have a long-term commitment to our institution to go abroad and work for a short period in centers of their choice as Visitor Observers (if possible even hands on experience), to gain new skill and expertise. The skill and expertise should have direct application in improving the quality of work (Patient care, Teaching, Research or Administration). (b) It is also envisaged that this training opportunity would help our staff to establish contacts with Centers of excellence abroad for developing collaborative activities to enhance the quality of work at the institution.c)It is desirable for the Heads of Unit / Department to meet with Senior Faculty of the department and makedevelopmental plans for the next 5 years, and identify suitable STF projects, and facilitate the application of appropriate faculty.

Eligibility: (a) Confirmed medical faculty at or above the level of Associate Professor Grade – II for broad specialty stream and Associate Professor Gr. I for the super specialty stream OR Non-Medical staff who have served for a minimum period of 10 years after confirmation. (b) They should have completed their sponsorship obligation if any, or should do so before 30th June of the year of application. (c) They should have completed their study / sabbatical leave obligation or should do before 30th June of the following year.(d) If previously awarded JTF (M), the staff should have completed at least 5 years of service in the institution (excluding study, sabbatical, special and loss of pay leave), before 30th June of the year of application. (e) They should have at least 5 years of service remaining with the institution.

Details of Fellowship: (a) Duration: 4 - 12 weeks. (b) Period: Normally, the commencement shall be from 1st July in the year of application to 30th June of the following year. (c) Type of leave granted – deputation leave & special leave for leave in excess of this (d) Travel related expenses(to and fro air fare, local travel to the airport, visa charges, travel related to visa application, health insurance) – Department/Unit special fund. (e) Fellowship grant: US$600 per week. This covers expenses incurred in registration, course fees, professional insurance and all other expenses.

Service Obligation: The period of STF service obligation is one year.

Method of Selection: A Committee comprising of Senior Faculty will be appointed to study the applications.

Candidates together with the Head of the Department/Unit should make a presentation to the Committee. The Committee will then prioritize the applications based on inherent merits and institutional needs. The number of fellowship awards will depend on the overall merit of the applications and the funds available.

Post – STFevaluation: STF awardees will have to submit a report on return to Vellore, after completion of the training programme; on the skills, knowledge acquired and plans to implement these. A second report is required one year later, describing the implementation of the STF project. Both these should be attested and forwarded by the Head of the Department.

UPCOMING EVENT : SHORT COURSE FOR DOCTORS IN DIABETES MELLITUS The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism will be organizing an Intensive CME for doctors in Diabetes from January 18 to 23, 2016 (Monday to Saturday) - with practical and theoretical intonation and detailed objective and practical assessment. OBITUARY Mr. Devasagayam, Hospital Housekeeping Attendant Gr.II, Surgical Ward, expired on December 31, 2015. He joined CMC in April 1988 and served the institution for over 27 years. His wife, Mrs. Samrajyam is a Hospital Housekeeping Attendant in RUHSA Department. His sons, Mr. Prakasam, Mr. Raja and Mr. Vinoth Kumar work as Hospital Housekeeping Attendants in Casualty, Hospital Maintenance and 'O' Block respectively.

INSERVICE TRAINING PROGRAMME The Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training and Development conducted the 11 th “In-Service” Training Programme (21st batch in English and 22nd batch in Tamil) for the year 2015, on “Leadership and Personality Development” for Medical Superintendent and General Superintendent appointed staff from 3rd to 5th November 2015 at CMC. This programme was well attended by totally 63 staff in two batches conducted concurrently.

One batch consists of Medical Superintendent and General Superintendent appointed English speaking staff (Technicians, Administrative, Secretarial, Front office and Clerical staff) and another batch consists of General Superintendent appointed Tamil speaking staff (Hospital Attendant and Housekeeping Attendant). The In-Service Training Programme content is aimed to enhance participants to be a transformed leader with the necessary skills to lead others by example both at workplace and at home. Dr. Samuel N.J. David, Sr. Manager and Head, Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training and Development welcomed the participants and highlighted the role of each participant in the healing ministry of Christ. He stated the importance of conducting these training programmes for creating a positive impact in the workplace and for better patient care. Dr. Sunil Chandy, our director also addressed the participants on the importance of interdependability among staff and Department.
