Season's Greetings in the Mighty Name of the New Born King, Jesus Christ!

The meaning of the word “Christ” (Gk. Kristos) is “The Anointed One.” In the Old Testament days, the kings were anointed before their enthronement. But, Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit while still in His mother’s womb. Jesus is a born King that is the miraculous nature of Christ the King. Around 800 years before the birth of Christ, prophet Isaiah announced that, the governance shall be upon his shoulders (Isa 9 : 6) and at the birth of Jesus, The Archangel Gabriel proclaimed that ‘The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.’ Hence, Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev 19 :16) at his birth.

This King does not expect sovereignty, and this, clearly, is no ordinary king. This is a king who identified him with the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the sick and the imprisoned; this King never exhibits his military might, of social or economic affluence. Christ the King is also Christ the Shepherd, and is descended from David the king, who was also David the Shepherd. Here is a King presenting himself, paradoxically, as someone in the greatest need, looking for the lowly and the humble. We can find the ‘meekness in His majesty.’ Are we ready to invite this everlasting and ‘mighty’ King into our lives, families and into our work places? This King is the source of peace – ‘King of Salem.’ Those who follow the lead of this King, will experience peace despite suffering, trauma and even death. God’s gift to us in Jesus is the miracle of peace in the face of life’s difficulties, even in the face of the final enemy of death.

We will experience absolute peace (Shalom) in every realm of our lives during the reign of our King Jesus Christ. Prophet Isaiah vividly presents a pictorial portrayal of the absolute peace at the reign of this King, “the wolf shall live with the lamb,…the calf and the lion and the fatling together,… the cow and the bear shall

Rev. Ananthi Arputha Mary Head of Chaplaincy UR OL OG Y GOLDEN JUBILEE AND CME UROL OLOG OGY The Department of Urology celebrated the Golden Jubilee of Urology training (1965 – 2015) on December 4, 2015. The specialty was created from General Surgery when Dr. John Carman, the former Director was the Head of Surgery. Dr. Roger Barnes, a pioneer in Endoscopic Prostate Surgery joined as faculty in 1956 and spent more than a year in the department. In 1965 the formal Urology Training Programme, one of the first in the country started with Dr. HS Bhat as the Head.

Dr. Mohan Rao a CMC MBBS alumnus,was the first trainee. Despite the deluge in Chennai that cancelled the road, rail and air access to Vellore, a host of alumni, from India and abroad participated. Several renowned national faculty also attended the CME held on December 4, 2015. The Chief Guest was Mr.Reginald Hall, former Consultant in Urology and Head Northern Cancer Network UK. The training of several of our senior faculty at Newcastle upon Tyne UK was facilitated by his efforts. Dr. Roger Hadley, former chair of Urology and Dean of Loma Linda Medical School and grandson of Dr. Roger Barnes was the Guest of Honor.

At a session “Five decades of Urology training” Dr. Mohan Rao recounted the early years of Urology and the trials and tribulations involved in performing the first successful kidney transplant in the country in 1971. It was interesting to note that the first transplant was done at night as there was no theatre time during the day. Over three thousand renal transplants have been done here since then.The long association of the department with the Freeman Hospital Newcastle upon Tyne and its impact on training was highlighted during the session. The newly instituted “Roger Barnes Gold Medal” was won by the medical student team of Sandeep Joel and Christianez Ratna Kiruba. The department has several other firsts to its credit. It was the first training institute to do keyhole surgery for kidney stones (PCNL) and offer shock wave lithotripsy.

The first deceased donor transplantation and laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy were done here. As one of the earliest and one of the largest training centres in the country, the department has set high standards. Many of the faculty have had the opportunity to work overseas, particularly UK, USA, Australia and Singapore. The department continues to receive visitor observers from more than half a dozen countries. Stretching across academic centres within India and abroad, corporate entities, mission hospitals and in private practice, trainees from the department have excelled and played stellar roles as leaders in the specialty. Eight of our alumni have been presidents of the Urological Society of India.The nation has honored two of our faculty with prestigious Dr. BC Roy Awards and one with a Padmashri. Currently five trainees are taken in a year. The department is well staffed and carries out 3500 major surgeries and treats 63000 outpatients and 3700 inpatients in a year. World class treatment is offered in all aspects of urology under one roof.

CME PR OGRAMME FFOR OR POST GRADU ATES PROGRAMME POSTGRADU GRADUA The Division of Surgery conducted the 17th Annual Continuing Medical Education in General Surgery from December 3 to 5, 2015.

Despite the inclement weather, close to Eighty students from various parts of the country participated in the CME. Although the objective of the CME was to train postgraduate students in General Surgery for the upcoming exit examination, a holistic approach involving bed-side clinical teaching was included. Practical and patient oriented teaching has been a hallmark of this CME over the years.

The faculty for the CME included eminent teachers from our institution and from various other institutions. The organizing secretary for the CME was Dr. John C. Muthusami. As has been the tradition, the Dr. John S.Carman oration was the highlight of the event and was delivered by Dr. Manju Kalra who is an alumnus of the batch of 1974 and is Professor of Surgery at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Consultant Surgeon, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Department of Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. She spoke on the topic ‘development of vascular surgery, my international perspective’. The audience was inspired by the work done by Dr. Kalra in pioneering and subsequently becoming an international authority in Vascular Surgery.

CONGRA TULA TIONS CONGRATULA TULATIONS Dr. D.J. Christopher, Professor and Head of Pulmonary Medicine has been elected chair of the Indo-US Action Protocol; Regional prospective observational Research in Tuberculosis (RePORT) consortium.

Dr. T. Balamugesh, Professor of Pulmonary Medicine has been elected Chair of Clinical Epidemiological working group of the (RePORT) consortium.

Dr. Basil Manayalil, Postgraduate Registrar, Department of Anaesthesia has won the best oral paper award titled "The Importance of neck circumference to thyromental distance ratio as a predictor of difficult intubation among obese patients" at the National Conference on Difficult Airway held at Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai from December 4 - 6, 2015.

Dr. Niranjana Sreedevi, PG in Geriatrics won the first Prize for platform presentation and secopnd prize in quiz at the 13th National conference of the Indian Academy of Geriatrics (GERICON 2015) held at GMCH Chandigarh..

TIMEL Y ALERT B Y DOCT OR PREVENT S TRAIN A CCIDENT TIMELY BY DOCTOR PREVENTS ACCIDENT A Timely Alert by a Doctor in the Facebook page of Salem Railway Division enabled in spotting and attending to a rail fracture on the tracks near Vaniyambadi station in Madras Railway Division, thus averting a possible mishap. Dr. Jacob John, Assistant Professor, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore, was travelling to Chennai on Monday morning.

When the train stopped for a signal, the passengers heard a loud noise as another train crossed that particular point on the opposite track. Dr. John got down from his compartment and inspected the opposite track, when he noticed some crack and a fish plate was missing. He posted the matter along with a picture in the Facebook. G. V. Venkatesan, PRO, Salem Railway Division, responded promptly and conveyed the message to the Madras Division higher officials.

CME UPD ATE ON PRETERM LABOUR UPDA A CME Update on Preterm Labour was organized by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit 4, on December 05, 2015 in the OG Conference Room. This was attended by 100 participants including GPs and Obstetricians from local hospitals. The speakers discussed about “Pathophysiology and risk factors of perterm labour” (Dr. Reeta Vijayselvi, Associate Professor); “Prediction and prevention of preterm labour”; (Dr. Manisha Beck, Associate Professor) “Diagnosis and management options” (Dr. Dibu Sam, Assistant Professor) and Dr. Vijay Gupta (Assistant Professor, Neonatology) discussed the “Complications of a preterm neonate”.

The talks were followed by a panel discussion where different clinical scenarios were discussed . This was followed by a “Question and Answer session” where the audience participated actively. The CME was credited with 5 points under MGR University.

ST AFF TRAINING AND DEVEL OPMENT PR OGRAMME STAFF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME The Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training and Development conducted the 10th "In-Service" Training Programme (19th batch in English and 20th batch in Tamil) for the year 2015, on “Leadership and Personality Development” for Medical Superintendent and General Superintendent appointed staff from October 26 to 28, 2015 at CMC. This programme was well attended by totally 60 staff in two batches conducted concurrently. One batch consists of Medical Superintendent and General Superintendent appointed English speaking staff (Technicians, Administrative, Secretarial, Front office and Clerical staff) and another batch consists of General Superintendent appointed Tamil speaking staff (Hospital Attendant and Housekeeping Attendant). The In-Service Training Programme content is aimed to enhance participants to be a transformed leader with the necessary skills to lead others by example both at workplace and at home.

Dr. Samuel N.J. David, Sr. Manager and Head, Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training and Development welcomed the participants and stated the efforts taken by administration in conducting these training programmes for creating a positive impact among staff. Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director also addressed the participants and encouraged them to be ambassadors for CMC in providing patient care. We also had a unique opportunity of having Mr. Ashok Vedanayagam, Director, SISHYA Foundation addressed both the groups in Tamil in the area of Family. This session was much appreciated by the participants and they opined that “the session was very useful and impressive”. CHRISTMAS CHEER C ARNIV AL CARNIV ARNIVAL The inauguration of the Christmas Carnival event took place on December 05, 2015. Mr. Senthil Raj, Inspector, Railway Protection Force, Katpadi Railway Station was the Guest of Honour. The Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Eapen and the Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel felicitated the gathering. The Deputy General Superintendent, Mr. C. Sunny Kuruvilla briefed the gathering about the Carnival and welcomed the guests. The Council Secretary, Dr. Thomas Ram, Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent and Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj, General Superintendent were also present during the inaugural. The Director during his felicitation also expressed his concern for the flood affected victims in Tamil Nadu and informed the gathering that an exclusive stall is put up for collecting funds for carrying out relief works for victims. There were 47 stalls that were put up which included food stall, clothing, automobile stall, games, Christmas decoration items and others. The income generated from the event goes to the Christmas Cheer fund for helping the poor and needy people in various charitable homes (40-45 homes) in the District and gifts for our Class IV staff.

W ORKSHOP ON APPLIC ATION OF NEXT GENERA TION SEQUENCING IN MEDICINE APPLICA GENERATION Applications of Next Gen Sequencing in Medicine – A Workshop to understand the Applications of Bioinformatics in Medicine. Realizing the need of updating the Medical Fraternity to the advances in Molecular Medicine and Sequencing technology the Clinical Genetics Unit conducted a workshop of Applications of Next Gen Sequencing.

This technology can decipher big chunks of coding DNA (genes) to diagnose genetic disorders with similar phenotypes in a very short time. The aim was to forefront the utility of this technology in managing genetic disorders. The meeting was opened with a prayer by Rev. Finney and welcome note by Dr. D.J. Christopher (Associate Director), Dr. Joy Sarojini Michael (Vice Principal) and Dr. Sukrya Nayak (Deputy Medical Superintendent). The key note address by Dr. Sumita Danda (HOD, Clinical Genetics Unit) and Dr. Ashish Singh (Associate Professor, Medical Oncology) highlighted the benefits of molecular technology and the importance of taking the best from technology for patient care including cancers in an ethical manner. Genetic counselling was referred as an important component prior to ordering a genetic test along with post genetic counselling . Dr.Vamsi Veeramachaneni explained the workflow of NGS and bioinformatics tools by his explicit presentation. Dr. Ashraf ul Mannan described clinical examples and enlightened the audience about the utility of NGS in diagnosis and genetic counselling . The afternoon session was highlighted by Dr. Gautham AU (Assist Professor Clinical genetics unit) speaking on patients with different genetic disorders which were resolved by NGS and their subsequent genotype-phenotype correlation. The last session was a panel discussion on common familial cancers diagnosis, surveillance, genetic counselling and follow up with Dr. Ashish Singh, Dr. Rajesh Balakrishnan (Associate Professor Radiotherapy), Dr. Anitha Thomas (Associate Professor, Gynae-Oncology, Dr. Reuben Thomas (Assistant Professor, Gastroenterology) and Ms. Niby Jacob Elackatt (Genetic Counsellor) as panellist and Dr. S. Danda as the moderator. They answered practical questions to educate the audience who took active participation. The workshop ended with a vote of thanks.
