Y FIRST VACATION WAS A TRIP TO DISNEY WORLD. It was also my first time on a plane, and I was excited to explore outside my hometown in Michigan.

Each winter after that, my parents took us kids on a getaway to escape the frigid North. Over the years, we saw the Everglades, the Washington Monument, the Wright Brothers National Memorial, New Orleans’ French Quarter, the Atlantic Ocean, and other landmarks. I learned more on these trips than I did from my textbooks. I loved travel. And as soon as my family returned home, I started planning the next big trip.

When I was 21, I went abroad for my first solo adventure and first international travel. My destination? New Zealand. I had met a family on the internet that was looking for an au pair for the summer. “I like kids, and it’ll be a good way to see the country,” I thought. I had an amazing time, and the trip sparked my love for solo travel and exploration outside the US. I enjoyed learning about other cultures— how people lived and why they did what they did. In New Zealand, for example, I found it fascinating that the police kept their guns in their cars rather than carrying them and that coffee shops required internet access fees. I’ve now visited over 15 countries and every US state except for Alaska and Hawaii.

As much as I love travel, though, I’m learning that my little vacays have consequences for local residents. Two years ago, a friend sent me Ayana Young’s For The Wild podcast, episode “BANI AMOR on Tourism and the Colonial Project.” I gave it a relisten recently, and it touched on a lot of my concerns as my team and I put together this issue. It inspired me to travel more mindfully.

Last year, for example, I visited Tulum, Mexico after hearing amazing things about it. While it was a great place to visit, and I enjoyed the history and natural beauty of the surrounding area, the city itself was overrun by English-speaking tourists.

Every other business near the beach was a club or restaurant with prices in USD. I thought, “I could be anywhere, this might as well be Vegas.” Then, I found a documentary called The Dark Side of Tulum. It brought to light the detrimental effects of mass tourism on the environment. The city’s infrastructure isn’t built to host large numbers of people at once. The majority of the city runs on generators, and businesses are dumping pollution into the ocean. Many hotels market themselves as “eco-friendly”—greenwashing at its best. Once Instagram influencers move on to the next IG-worthy hot spot, Tulum will be left with the destruction that was caused—not only to its natural beauty, but to the people who live there.

So whether you’re road-tripping domestically or flying internationally, let this issue’s articles on everything from the beaches of Costa Rica to the streets of Paris be your inspiration. And, please— travel mindfully, friends!

Bestselling Author, Influencer, and Activist: How Transitioning to a Vegan Lifestyle Launched

Joanne Molinaro’s Journey to Fame

We can all agree that two of the best things in life are good food and entertaining stories—and Joanne Molinaro is a great source for both!

The oh-so-inspiring content creator popped off during the pandemic with her TikToks featuring innovative vegan Korean recipes supported by engaging voiceover stories about her immigrant family.

And with the immense success of her blog, YouTube channel, and social media pages, Molinaro quit her job as a full-time attorney to focus on The Korean Vegan— branching out later to include a podcast and cookbook.

VegOut (VO): What initially inspired you to adopt a plant-based diet in 2016?

Joanne Molinaro (JM): My then boyfriend (now husband)

wanted to go plant-based after reading Finding Ultra, Rich Roll’s autobiography. [Anthony] is a very athletic person, and he’s always been concerned about his health. His father had just passed away from a host of autoimmune issues. And I think he felt some of those issues may have been exacerbated by his father’s diet. He didn’t want to make the same mistakes, so he went plant-based. [Anthony] basically told me “I’m gonna do it, I don’t care if you do it.” But I could tell that he did care.

So I did a lot of research on [plant-based foods], watched a lot of videos, and read Rich Roll’s book as well. Based on a lot of different things, I decided to give it a try. When I was experimenting with [veganism], my father [was diagnosed] with prostate cancer, which I read in my research was likely linked to his increased consumption of red meat. I took that as a sign and made the commitment. I was like “I’m never eating meat again.” We were technically vegetarian for about three weeks, and then we cut out cheese and ultimately went vegan.

VO: Did you immediately start veganizing classic Korean recipes, or were you more of a PB&J vegan to start?

JM: I immediately started. And that was a big thing because

I felt very threatened by the fact that my boyfriend, a white man, was asking me to go vegan. At that time, I had a very restrictive understanding of what that meant. I felt vegan was essentially non-ethnic cuisine. I felt that white people ate this way, and I didn’t know any Korean vegans. So I kind of felt like he was asking me to give up my culture. As a result, I was a little resentful toward him. We fought a lot about it. But in the end, I made the decision that [it was better] for me for a lot of different reasons, but [that] I [needed] to stay connected with my Korean heritage. As a result of that, I started The Korean Vegan almost immediately because I wanted to make sure there was a way for me to still eat the foods that reminded me of my family, that kept me connected to my family.

VO: At what point did you think, “I should make a blog to share my vegan recipes and experiences?”

JM: I started making vegan versions of Korean food

immediately. And one morning after a particularly great meal, [Anthony] was like, “This is so good. You should start a YouTube channel. You can call yourself The Korean Vegan.” It was really his idea. I thought, “Sure, why not? Maybe I can use it as a motivational tool to keep me on this path and keep me inspired.” I was a full-time lawyer at the time so I had no aspirations of doing anything related to content creation. It was more of a, “Sure! I can prove that I’m a doer.” At the end of the night, I had a Facebook page, YouTube channel, and Instagram page called The Korean Vegan.

VO: How did it feel transitioning from an attorney to full-time content creator?

JM: In many ways, it was liberating, exciting, and fun. I have

so much more control over my day, and I am answering to the needs of my clients as well as my own. That’s kind of nice. On the other hand, it’s also terrifying because I am now in control of everything. There is no safety net, there is no excuse. I am the bottom line. I am the last buck. I make all of the decisions for our business. So if something goes wrong, I really have no one to blame but myself.

VO: How has your background in law helped you run your current business?

JM: Many of the things that I’ve

learned as a full-time attorney and partner have transitioned very well into being a business owner. Being a partner at a law firm is not unlike being a small business owner inside a much larger business. So I’ve taken a lot of what I’ve learned about taking ownership, being there for your clients, providing excellent service, and constantly innovating. A lot of those things go into being a successful business owner, which is what I view myself as now. I think content creation is such a new thing in this economy, nobody really knows what to call it.

But in my view, it’s just a small business. The other thing is that being a lawyer teaches you time management in ways I don’t think other [positions could] teach you. Mostly because our clients are billed by the [tenth of an] hour, so we learn how to maximize every six minutes to make sure our clients are getting the most cost-efficient value that we can provide to them.

And that [is why] I don’t like to waste time.

VO: We admire how vulnerable you are online. Did it take time to reach that point? Why did you feel it important to share stories about your childhood, relationships, and personal struggles?

JM: I felt it was important to share stories about my

childhood and family because, at that time (2016-2017), there was a gaping ignorance of what it meant to be an immigrant family in the United States. It also felt that some people seemed to think immigrant families weren’t as “American” as other families. And I really wanted to share, “Hey. I don’t want to be combative, I don’t want to fight you, I just want to tell you a story. And I want to see if you can relate to any aspects of this story.” I feel the need to be vulnerable because I want to be memorable. How can I be memorable? Well, I need to connect with the person on the other end. I need to make sure the person listening, reading, or watching the story feels something inside their heart. The most expedient way to do that is to reveal my own—to show you that I’m as human as you are. And that perhaps there are other points of connection that we can build upon. That’s why I think vulnerability is such a powerful tool in bridging some of the divides that were revealed in 2016-2017.

VO: Congrats on your first cookbook and podcast! What has been your favorite part about each new venture?

JM: For the cookbook, the most exciting thing has been

meeting all of the people in The Korean Vegan community.

I was very fortunate that COVID-19 was on a downturn when my book was published. As a result, I was able to meet a lot of people who had been following me for many years and whose loyalty means so much to me, and they’re reading my book now. That was the most exciting thing. I would also say seeing so many people make Doenjang Chigae and other foods that, growing up, I was nervous to eat in front of other people for being too stinky.

Doenjang Chigae is probably the most popular recipe in my cookbook, and even my mom is flabbergasted by that.

With the podcast, being able to connect with people in this very different way. I’m not cooking on my podcast.

There’s very little food involved. But still being able to connect with my community, thrive within that community, and provoke thought and commentary on some really difficult topics whether they deal with grief, loss, or cultural appropriation in food. All of these things are hard to talk about. But creating a safe space for people to have thoughts on these things, some of which are not the same as mine, is important and something I’m very proud of.

VO: You recently moved from Chicago to Southern California. What motivated you to make that move?

JM: Honestly, it was JOi Café. I know

that sounds weird, but I’ll be 100% honest.

We came to California in June of 2021 to record The Rich Roll Podcast. And Rich Roll is obviously like a hero to us because he’s why we went vegan. On one of the afternoons we were here for the podcast, we got to eat at JOi Café, and we got to meet with Joi and Nic, the owners of the cafe. So all of a sudden, we were finding this small-knit community of people who had very similar values to us. First, we met Rich and his entire team at the podcast. Then, we met Joi and Nic who make amazing vegan food and all of the people inside the restaurant who were enjoying that food. I just felt that we could not find the same thing in Chicago. I was just talking to my brother-in-law about this—how frustrating it is that he can’t find JUST Egg or Field Roast in his regular grocery store. I think Chicago is still a very meat-and-potatoes town. I’ve lived there my whole life—I love that city to death. But I wanted to try, at least for some portion of my life, living in a city where so many people share a lot of my values when it comes to animal welfare, health, fitness, and wellness. These are things that are really important to me personally. And it was so wonderful, warm, and lovely sitting in a restaurant like JOi Café and knowing all of these people feel the same way I do.

VO: You travel quite a bit for press engagements. Do you have any vegan travel tips you’d like to share?

JM: You are entitled to having beautiful,

delicious plant-based meals at every single place you go. But it’s just not reality. And the longer you hold onto that resentment, the more difficult your traveling is going to be. I would get so mad all of the time. “Why is it so hard where I am?” Okay, it’s hard. What are you going to do about it? Just complain the whole trip and be miserable? You’re just ruining it for yourself. You have to plan in advance. I always Google all of the vegan grocery stores, restaurants, and cafes.

I’m not just talking about all-vegan, I’m talking about anything that offers vegan options. I use HappyCow, Google, Eater, Yelp—everything at my disposal to make sure things are really nice and comfortable around me. The other thing I do is call hotels and say, “Hey, I’m vegan. Are there vegan options on your room service menu?

Is your chef willing to cater to my diet?”

Ninety percent of the time they are. And if they’re not, then I’m not staying at that hotel. The other thing I would say is if you're traveling outside of the country, it’s

helpful to have somebody who lives there to help you identify the vegan spots. I went to Korea with my family in 2019. I’m Korean, my parents are Korean, and I was like, “Yeah, I don’t need anyone to help me.” And I was so wrong. My sister-in-law, who is a recent immigrant from Korea, was able to introduce us to all of these hidden underground vegan restaurants that I would not have been able to access on my own as a Korean American.

VO: What’s your favorite destination for vegan food?

JM: That’s really hard, but I would say the

best vegan meal I ever had was in Korea.

It was made for me by my sister-in-law's mother—which sounds totally inaccessible, but hear me out. My sister-in-law’s mother is very steeped in the Korean Buddhist community because her husband is an artist, and he paints for temples all around Korea. Korean Buddhist food, for the most part, is plant-based. Many monks are entirely plant-based because they believe in not doing harm to anything. So she was able to make the most delicious vegan food out of vegetables, roots, shoots, greens, and starches. I always find that the most delicious food is the simplest food. It just means getting really good fresh vegetables with a few flavorings, seasonings, and maybe a little bit of sesame oil. And that would be my favorite—amazing temple food from Korea.

SLUTTY VEGAN Opens Its First College Campus Location The iconic vegan burger joint continues its rapid growth as founder Pinky Cole sets her sights on bringing the Slutty Vegan mindset to the masses. Earlier this year, Slutty Vegan opened its ninth location and its third in the metro Atlanta area at the Georgia Tech campus. The college outpost is located in the John Lewis Student Center and serves the same classic takeout menu that Slutty Vegan patrons have come to know and love. Slutty Vegan also just opened its much-anticipated Harlem location in March of this year.

TABITHA BROWN Launches Third Target Collection

LAUGHING COW Debuts Vegan Cheese Wedges Classic Laughing Cow cheese wedges are getting a vegan makeover! The plant-based version of the nostalgic snack will soon be available exclusively at Whole Foods Market locations nationwide, where you will find it in the refrigerated section.

Laughing Cow Plant Based will come in two flavors: Original and Garlic Herb.

Additionally, Laughing Cow’s parent company, Bel Brands, expanded its vegan cheese portfolio last year and has plans to debut more vegan cheese innovations throughout 2023.

PLANT POWER FAST FOOD Launches Vegan Blizzard Dupe Last December, Plant Power Fast Food launched its “Snow Days” line at all locations. The vegan Blizzard dupe brought back all the nostalgia with its oat milk soft-serve base and selection of toppings and mix-ins. Flavors include Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Brownie, and Betterfinger. Plant Power began its journey in 2016 in San Diego as one of the few vegan fast-food restaurants in Southern California. Since then, the brand has continued to grow and now has 11 locations across California and Nevada.

BEN & JERRY’S AND AVA DUVERNAY Collab on New Vegan Ice Cream Flavor

EMIRATES Reports 154% Increase in Vegan Meals Served Onboard from 2021 to 2022

Ben & Jerry’s recently added yet another ice cream to their already impressive line of non-dairy flavors. This time, in collaboration with Ava Duvernay, it was Lights!

Caramel! Action! directed by Ava DuVernay. With a vanilla almond milk ice cream base, salted caramel swirls, graham crackers, and chocolate chip cookie dough, the pints sell for $6.49. You can also find the ice cream at Ben & Jerry’s scoop shops. Proceeds from the sale of the new addition will benefit DuVernay’s nonprofit ARRAY Alliance.

Vegan-friendly airline Emirates reported a 154% increase in vegan meals served onboard from 2021 to 2022. This translates into over 280,000 plant-based meals served on flights during the calendar year. Since the 90s, the airline has offered vegan options to passengers, with over 180 plant-based recipes made available.

Economy Class entrees have included Creamy Spinach & Avocado Mousseline (with tofu, snowpeas, asparagus, and other fruits and veggies), Multi-Colored Quinoa (with caramelized pear & celeriac purée, roasted cauliflower, glazed carrots, and more), and Barley Risotto (with mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, and buttered chestnuts, among other ingredients), in addition to others.

HARD-BOILED VEGAN EGGS Launch at Whole Foods Nationwide Crafty Counter’s WunderEggs hit stores at the start of 2023.

hen you tune into Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, chances are you’ll fall in love with the character Kamala Nandiwadal. She lights up the screen with her kind, bright personality and beautiful looks.

And when you find out the actress who plays Kamala is vegan, you’ll fall even more in love! After gaining popularity through Never Have I Ever, Richa Moorjani has used her platform to advocate for veganism. From food and fashion to beauty products, Moorjani’s veganism is woven into everything she does. Keep reading to learn more about her vegan journey, set life, must-have products, and more.

VegOut (VO): Growing up in California, do you feel like you were exposed to vegan food before most people? What was your perception of it?

Richa Moorjani (RM): I’m embarrassed to say I actually didn’t know what veganism was until maybe after college. It was not really talked about much when I was growing up, nor was there any education or information on how animals are raised for agriculture or its impact on our planet. In fact, I think that any idea I had about vegans was that they were extremist weird people. And now I’m one of them!

VO: At what point did you decide to go vegan? Was that a pretty smooth transition?

RM: I grew up eating white meat and seafood (red meat was always discouraged in my family for cultural reasons). But I became vegetarian in my 20s when I was living in India and was exposed to chicken slaughter shops on the street I lived on. I’ve always loved animals and felt compassion for them, but I never fully understood the realities of consuming dairy, eating meat, or buying products with animal ingredients in them until I was face to face with it and exposed to the sights, sounds, and smells. And after learning more on my own by researching and watching documentaries, I felt the veil of ignorance and denial lift. [Going] vegan three years ago was a huge awakening for me and my husband in so many ways.

VO: It’s so cool that you lived in Mumbai for a couple of years! What was the vegan scene like there?

RM: I wasn’t vegan [then], but I did [go] vegetarian shortly after I moved there. The food scene in Mumbai in general is incredible. You can find pretty much any cuisine there, being in a metropolitan city. I never missed eating meat after giving it up, [given] that delicious vegetarian options were everywhere. I mostly ate home cooked Indian food, which was mostly vegan— without me even technically being vegan at that time.

VO: We love that you’re so vocal about your cruelty-free lifestyle! What are some of your favorite sustainable fashion and beauty must-haves?

RM: When I [went] vegan, I vowed to never consume any food or products with animal ingredients—including skin care, makeup, clothes, supplements, accessories, etc. I was (and am still) astonished by the fact that animals are used for almost everything we consume, when it is completely unnecessary.

Some of my favorite sustainable/vegan leather brands are LaBante London, AMARÉ, and SAMARA. For skin care, I love Biossance, True Botanicals, Youth To The People, and OSEA. My go-to makeup products on and off set are from Kosas (Tinted Face Oil), ILIA, Live Tinted, Hourglass, Milk Makeup, and MERIT Beauty. I also get a lot of household items from Parachute and Avocado.

VO: What are a few things you do to take care of your mental and physical well-being when you’re in the middle of filming a TV show?

RM: I do everything I can to take care of my health—both physical and mental. I have a morning routine that consists of deep breathing (pranayam), meditation, and stretching. If I don’t get time before being on set, I try to do it in my trailer whenever I have a moment. I take a journal with me to set as well. [I also] try to fit in a low-impact workout like pilates or yoga at least 3-5 times a week. Sleep is very important for me, so I don’t waste any time before getting to bed when I get home after a long day. And needless to say, all the plant-based food I eat helps with me feeling nourished and healthy.

VO: Never Have I Ever is one of our favorite shows!

Do you have a favorite memory from on set? Bonus points if it has to do with veganism!

RM: Pretty much all of my favorite memories on set are from when we would do dinner table scenes with the family. Mostly because I love working with my TV family, but also because the food we [ate] in those scenes was always such a treat. It was mostly Indian food and ALWAYS vegan per my request.

VO: Let’s play a game of “Never Have I Ever”—vegan edition! What are three vegan dishes you want to try that you haven’t gotten around to yet?

RM: Never have I ever tried Miyoko’s Vegan Pizza Mozzarella, Beyond Chicken, or potato milk!

VO: What are your resolutions or goals for the year?

RM: To be more kind and patient with myself and to listen to my body when it’s telling me it doesn’t like or needs something. Health is wealth.

What sets Finnish airline Finnair apart from some of the other amazing airline vegan meal options is their inclusion of curated plant-based desserts. From raspberry mousse to coconut and lime ice cream, and even rhubarb tarts, Finnair has no shortage of final courses to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Vegan meals are easy to request online, with past mains including Thai yellow curry (served with tofu, couscous, and cauliflower) and a tofu stir-fry. One delicious side salad option has been the potato salad with pomegranate seeds and dill.

When you fly Qantas, you can expect to receive a soy milk option with your coffee during breakfast. This is just a glimpse into the impressive vegan accommodations provided by Qantas, which is consistently ranked as one of the top airlines for vegans.

Then, in 2019, Cathay started offering OmniPork in various plantbased flight meals, such as their OmniPork Bolognese with Garganelli Pasta.

In a collaboration with Impossible Foods, United Airlines has set strides by offering Impossible Meatball bowls on first class domestic flights and Impossible Sausage, which is available in United Polaris Lounges in Chicago, Los Angeles, Newark, and San Francisco. Long-haul vegan menus may serve Indianstyle spiced cauliflower, chickpeas, and white rice, a roll with vegan Smart Balance margarine, salad with lemon, and Lucy's chocolate chip cookies. Other options include creamy black lentils, rice, spinach, and black-eyed peas, vegan stuffed grape leaf with dolmainfused yogurt, a grilled zucchini sandwich, and roasted veggies with rice. The Plant Powered Show

VegFest Brasil

The Plant Powered Show features celebrity chefs, mixologists, health and wellness gurus, a plant-based food, drink, and lifestyle products marketplace, and a series of talks. KG: As a small-town vegan living in a dusty town in West Texas, I know the difficulty of finding a place to eat. That may be different if you visit a large city with many vegan restaurants. I use social media, primarily Instagram, to research the vegan community in the area where I will be traveling. I inquire with local vegan Instagram accounts about the best vegan restaurants and non-vegan spots in the city that serve vegan food. This is a fantastic way to meet new people and learn about the city! HappyCow, Google Maps, and Yelp are great for finding vegan eats, reviews, and photos! If you’re having trouble with vegan options in a smaller town, call the restaurants to see if they can accommodate you. Most restaurants will prepare a dish off the menu using ingredients always on hand.

Besides having a good outlook, I always do a deep dive into the place I am visiting. I cannot emphasize enough how helpful researching before your visit is. To start, I have three main ways I look up new vegan eats. Number one is, of course, Google! Not only am I checking out menus, but I’m looking at reviews. This brings me to my second research tool: Yelp. I choose to use this over HappyCow because it’s helpful for places that are not entirely vegan. Though, HappyCow is another valuable resource. For non-vegan restaurants, I usually take an extra step to call and verify menu items and ingredients.

Lastly, I always check social media. My go-to is Instagram!

I also look on the HappyCow or Vanilla Bean apps and save vegan-friendly places on my phone. Lastly, I like to join Facebook groups and ask locals for recommendations. The airport is sometimes the most challenging place to eat as a vegan, so I make sure to pack extra snacks. Additionally, booking a hotel or Airbnb with a full kitchen is always a plus because you’ll be able to make your own food. The last tip I have is for international travel. It’s important to respect different cultures and acknowledge that veganism isn’t the norm. Learning phrases such as “no meat” and “no dairy” will help when ordering food at a non-vegan establishment.

Dr. Angie Sadeghi

We had the pleasure of catching up with plant-based MD Dr. Angie Sadeghi. As a practicing gastroenterologist and WFPB diet advocate, she talks to us about the medical school curriculum, supplements for gut health, and her plant-based medical practice.

VegOut (VO): We’ve learned from other physicians that plant-based nutrition is not a common part of the medical school curriculum. What inspired you to dig deeper into veganism and wrap plant-based eating into your medical practice?

Dr. Angie Sadeghi (AS): One must realize that medical school is jam-packed with critical information including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, biochemistry, psychology, microbiology, and clinical medicine. Putting it into perspective, there is about five times more information to be learned in medical school in four years compared to what is learned in four years of [traditional] college undergrad. The time limitation has already pushed many students to the max. This information is more vital for the preparation of a medical student than nutrition teaching. In order to practice as a physician after only four years of medical school, one must learn more than [expected].

I don't believe that it should be the job of medical doctors to teach nutrition basics to their patients during a visit. I believe that registered dietitians should do that job [as] they know more about nutrition than medical doctors do because it’s their specialty and passion. I realize this could be a dilemma for patients, so at the Institute of Plant-Based Medicine, we have delegated that responsibility to the experts.

VO: As a board-certified gastroenterologist, what are your top three diet and lifestyle suggestions for promoting optimal gut health?

AS: [Research shows] that more than 65% of patients are lactose intolerant, but in my practice, the percentage of patients who improve after [transitioning to] a dairy-free diet is much higher. Therefore, one of my first recommendations is to avoid dairy.

Second, I recommend increasing dietary fiber, which promotes gut health. Third, I suggest avoiding excessive alcoholic beverages.

VO: What are your thoughts on some of the trendy products that claim to promote improved digestion and gut health, such as greens powders, celery juice, probiotics, and collagen?

AS: In general, I am not one to promote supplements, juices, or cleanses as the panacea for gut health. There are many gimmicky words used for marketing purposes online to make a quick sale, but most of the time these products are sold without adequate medical evidence to back up their claims (e.g., liver cleanse, body detox). The real remedy is living a healthy lifestyle, which is rather simple, but not catchy enough I suppose.

VO: As the CEO and president of the Institute of Plant-Based Medicine, tell us about your practice. What services does the Newport, California-based clinic offer to clients?

AS: We are a multispecialty, lifestyle, evidence-based, medical practice. We are proud to offer the perfect combination of lifestyle and evidence-based medicine traditionally practiced in the US. This means we integrate nutrition teachings by registered dietitians, weight loss coaching, and mental health [services] by psychiatrists and psychologists. We believe our patients enjoy receiving comprehensive care to improve their health, [both] preventing [and even reversing] disease.

Dr. Angie Sadeghi attended medical school at Ross University School of Medicine. She completed her medical residency and fellowship at the University of Southern California Medical Center and her internship at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Angie is a board-certified gastroenterologist who specializes in the treatment of digestive issues and illnesses of the stomach, liver, esophagus, and colon. She is the president and CEO of the Institute of Plant-Based Medicine (IOPBM) based in Newport, California. She practices alongside an interdisciplinary team providing an integrated approach to healthy living.

VO: The media has become a saturated source of nutrition information. While there is a lot of accurate nutrition data to be found, not all of it is factual. Which wellness trends and myths would you like to see disappear and why?

AS: The market is indeed saturated with an abundance of opinions by people who are unqualified to make health recommendations. I suggest really doing your homework before putting your trust in someone. In my humble opinion, you can trust your medical doctors (MDs and DOs), as well as registered dietitians (RDs).
