About Vegas Kids Zone
Longtime locals and families new to the valley turn to the online publication for information, but, more than anything, for community. I hear from parents daily and put together classes, meetups, events and quarterly resource fairs based on their asks.
Here are a few of the most-read resources on the site:
The events calendar is a popular find for locals but it can be overwhelming with allll the things. Parents asked for an easier way to find those big things you wish you hadn’t missed, such as festivals and health fairs. You can easily find free and affordable events in the 7 Things to Do in Las Vegas for Kids This Week.

Gift Card Fraud
They are simple, convenient and popular. The neatly packaged gift card you can pick up from a kiosk is an easy go-to gift. It’s also a quick and easy target for fraudsters. This has become a prevalent crime, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. I had no idea this was a thing until a friend told me her $100 gift card she gave her daughter was empty when they went to use it. Add insult to injury, she found that there was no recourse from the store they bought it from or the one they planned to use it in.
Here’s how it works: Criminals remove gift cards from store racks, take photos of the card numbers and pin codes, put fake security stickers over real ones and neatly place the compromised gift card to the kiosk and wait.
You then purchase these compromised cards, activate them at the register, and add value. The criminals drain the card of its value before it's used legitimately. There is no recourse to get your money back. You are responsible for checking that the gift card hasn’t been i d
TO AVOID FALLING VICTIM TO THIS SCAM, FOLLOW THESE TIPS:
1. Inspect the Card: Make sure the protective covering and tape covering the pin are intact.
Check for Seals: Ensure the gift card packaging is sealed. Look for any signs of tampering.
2. A Good Rule: Only buy gift cards that are kept behind the counter or locked up.
3. Keep the Receipt: Retain the store receipt in case you need to prove the purchase and report a compromised card.
4. Act Quickly: If you suspect a gift card has been compromised, report it to the gift card company immediately. Request a freeze on the card and ask for a refund. List of gift card company contacts here.
6.
5. Report It: Tell the Federal Trade Commission about gift card fraud. ReportFraud.FTC.gov

VKZ Resource Fair
Where locals find the ltest and greatest resources for their family!
It’s been five years since our first resource fair and it’s become one of the biggest events in our VKZ year! It all began on a whim when we noticed a growing need in our community for reliable recommendations on everything from pediatricians to sports programs, and even how to start homeschooling in Las Vegas.
Parents were also seeking ways to connect with each other, which inspired me to create a regular, inperson resource fair featuring our signature Friendship Table.
The Vegas Kids Zone Family Resource Fairs bring together local schools, individual teachers, tutors, sports and art programs, food vendors, special needs programs, homeschool and education resources, national online education programs, and a variety of family-focused businesses all at no cost!
Attendees can enjoy complimentary vision screenings and sports physicals, as well as giveaways of toys, candy, books, handcrafted items, and more for all ages and interests.
Want to participate in our next big event? Register here for the upcoming VKZ Family Resource Fair.

exploring Big Ideas
This can-do kid creates libraries around the world and hosts an annual financial literacy conference. He’s given a TEDx talk, jet-setted across 4 continents, 7 countries, and over 15 cities to build libraries for refugees from Ukraine and children in Africa, all before hitting the ripe old age of 8!
Justyn Boumah is a bundle of ambition and joy. From author to philanthropist and cook, he wears many hats of his own design. He took a minute before his next transcontinental adventure to talk with us.
What inspires you?

What has been your latest endeavor?

What advice do you give to kids who want to write a book or start a business?
“You don’t have to be BIG or STRONG to do BIG things,” he said.
Justyn recently met with Senator Jackie Rosen as part of his ongoing efforts to help local kids with financial literacy and access to books.

Where to go from the word “no”
The Should Project Revised a Stale Mindset
When local substitute teacher Andrew Plotkin was told no at every turn, it might be best to say it simply didn’t register.
“Therewassomuchfoodbeingthrownoutateach school I (subbed) at,” said Plotkin, founder of The Should Project. “It was hard to watch when there are so many people in Las Vegas and across thecountrydealingwithfoodinsecurity.”
His attempts to deliver the food to kids in need were met with shrugs and defeated head shakes. The frustration for this gregarious substitute teacher was in the simple math.
“I saw a big problem but realized the missing pieces weren't insurmountable,” Plotkin said, noting the main issue was having a place to store food and delivery volunteers. “When I realized that was all that was missing, I couldn't ignore it.”
Lucky for thousands of local kids, he didn’t.
He “email bombed” and called any and all he thought could help. State senator Jeff Stone stepped up and found that actually the guidelines of the school breakfast program require that schools must exhaust all avenues.
With the help of Young Women’s Leadership Academy, food and donations for refrigerators poured in. His girlfriend, Stephanie Grime, recorded the kindness and generosity of staff and strangers who contributed time and resources to The Should Project each week.
“It wasn’t until I saw what she (Stephanie) put together that I realized all we had done,” he said. “It’s been an amazing response from locals.”
TheWhyBehindHisShould
The challenges of a stressed school system and staff is partially why the logo of The Should Project is built of Lego blocks, symbolizing how connecting small pieces can bridge a gap in a minor way with a massive impact. The other reason is much more personal.
Plotkin’s father passed away suddenly 16 years ago, leaving him, his mother, Leslie and sister Lisa, devastated. Milestones passed, leaving a hole where his father should have been.
“Using the word ’should’ in the name of this project is a way for me to rewire my brain to think positively when I hear that word,” he said, “shifting from negative thoughts to a positive drive.”

rescue me!

Shelly found her best friend in the parking lot ofTractorSupply.
“From the moment I saw her, I knew she had to come home with me, ” said Shelly, a local mom to two dogs, a bird and three children. “It’s been magical having her with our little kids and how she gently plays with our youngest and rough houses with my 8-year-old son. ”
As a child, her parents rescued basset hounds whohadhealthproblems.
“These bred dogs have eye and ear issues and it was heartbreaking to watch,” she said. That experience changed her. “I try to tell people it’s so much better to rescue a pet than buy from a breeder.”
Bonus, she said, is that shelters typically ensure that animals are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before adoption.
“It’s a meaningful thing for you and the pets yourescue, ”shesaid.
Shelters often have limited space and resources. By adopting, you free up space for another animal in need, potentially saving its life.
Adopting an animal from a shelter helps decrease the number of stray and unwanted animals, which can help alleviate issues related to overpopulation and homelessness.
We want to hear from you! We love a good rescue story. Share how you came to call your pet your best friend and we’ll publish it here! Email Kim@vegaskidszone.com.

Gluten Free please!
Where to find great gluten free food in Las Vegas
We have tracked down actually good and actually gluten free at area restaurants. Click on over to the site for the full list that is updatedmonthly.
It can be hard to find good restaurants with worthy gluten-free menus for kids as well as adults. This list is based on local parents suggestionsintheVegasKidsZoneFacebook group as well as emails sent in from avid readersofourweeklynewsletter.
Finding reliable places to eat out when you have little kids with gluten allergies or Celiac disease can turn a fun night into a chore. Even small amounts of gluten can trigger reactions in some people with gluten allergies or sensitivities. Cross-contamination can occur when gluten-free foods come into contact with gluten-containing foods, utensils, or surfaces.
To prevent accidental exposure, it’s comforting to know that the person preparing the food understands the importance of not cross-contaminating any food.
Do you know a restaurant with a good GF menu and don’t see it listed on the VKZ site? Email Kim@vegaskidszone.com with the info!

Gluten free Strawberry Scones
Looking for a delightful treat that's both gluten-free and bursting with flavor? These gluten-free strawberry scones are the perfect combination of tender and crumbly, with a wonderful buttery flavor complementedbythesweetnessoffreshstrawberries.
Gluten-FreeStrawberryBasilScones
Ingredients
● 325 grams (3 ¹⁄₃ cups) GF flour mix
● ¹⁄₂ tsp xanthan gum
● 1 tbsp baking powder
● ¹⁄₂ tsp salt
● 115 grams (¹⁄₂ cup) sugar
● 70 grams (5 tbsp) margarine, cubed and chilled
● ¹⁄₄ cup minced, fresh basil
Directions:
● 140 grams (³⁄₄ cup) chopped strawberries
● 70 ml (¹⁄₃ cup) high protein dairy-free milk
(like pea protein or almond)
● 65 ml (¹⁄₃ cup) full-fat coconut milk
● ¹⁄₂ tbsp vinegar
Coating
● 2 tsp each high protein milk
● 1 tsp sugar
Stir together the coconut milk, high protein milk, and vinegar in a small bowl. Set aside.
Mix the first 5 ingredients in a large bowl.
Rub the margarine cubes into the flour until they are pea-sized, then stir in the basil.
Add the strawberries and toss with flour.
Stir the milk mixture into dry ingredients until combined. You may need to use your hands at the end to get everything mixed in. If needed, add in extra milk 1 tsp. at a time to bring the dough together. It should form a slightly sticky (but not ‘wet’) dough.
Rest the dough in the fridge for 10 minutes, then dump it onto a counter or parchment paper lightly dusted with tapioca starch. Gently pat into a 1 inch thick circle.
Cut into 8 triangles and carefully transfer those onto parchment-lined baking sheets.
Chill the scones in the fridge for 10 minutes (up to an hour).
For the coating, stir together the high protein milk and sugar
Lightly brush the scones with the mixture.
Bake in a 400 degree oven for 16-18 minutes, rotating halfway through baking time.
Allow scones to cool in pan for 5 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to finish cooling before serving.

Tips to Choose a Home in Las Vegas
Tips and tricks for those considering moving to Las Vegas or new to the area Find your vibe in the valley!
There are many reasons for families to move to Las Vegas. Getting to know the area before hand can ease your worries. That’s what the Vegas Kids Zone Community is all about. We help new residents and those looking to explore home ownership in the valley find a good fit via our vast network of locals and professionals.
We turned to our trusted resource, Realtor Dave, to offer his top tips to find a home in Las Vegas.
“Not every home is going to tick off every need, that is really rare, ” he said. “But you can set yourself up to find your ideal home by just doing a few things.”
Whether you plan to move to the City of Henderson for its outdoor activities, the cozy villages of Summerlin nestled near the western edge of the valley or the community-centered Centennial Hills, there are three main points to consider - price, configuration and location.
“You can boil down the entire process to these three categories because one will be more important than the other two and that is where all of our attention should be focused so that we have a positive result,” he said.
“Knowing the Top 10 things you really want can help you realize that the home you want to look at is a legitimate contender for your next home purchase,” he said.
Recently, a family flew in for a weekend and gave Realtor Dave the task to find them the perfect home in 72 hours. After a brief phone chat, they narrowed their choice to 3 homes to check out in person. Find out what they chose here. Have a real estate story to share or want to be featured in the magazine? NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS
So many reasons the Las Vegas valley is a great place to call home
PET PRIDE!
Congratulations to the VegasPet Animal Hospital on their grand opening Feb. 17. Located in the Medical District between Rancho and Charleston, they are a local business that provides wellness and medical care for our furry friends. Ward 1 Councilman Brian Knudsen presented them with a Certificate of Recognition .
MORE TO LOVE!
Councilwoman Victoria Seaman joined local philanthropist and legendary local restaurant owner Ignazio Sessa, for a ribbon-cutting at his newest restaurant, Sicilian Guys Pizzeria. She presented a proclamation on behalf of the Mayor and Las Vegas City Council to recognize Ignazio and all his contributions to the community. You may know Sessa’s work! He has several eateries across the Valley including Omelet House, Omelet Cafe and this new spot we know neighbors were curious about!

e Big Bloom
Tips to see the mega desert wildflowersbloom in and around the Las Vegas valley, hiking spots and day trips!
Picture this: a desert super bloom is like hitting the jackpot of wildflowers, bursting into a riot of colors in usually barren lands. Thanks to some secret ingredients like extra rain, perfect temps, and dreamy soil, these blooms turn the desert into a living canvas. And if you're stumped by a flower's identity, fear not! The Southern Nevada Water Authority's got your back with a handy plant finder tool - just describe the plant, and voila!
Deserts aren't exactly known for their greenery, but when a super bloom hits town, it's like Mother Nature's confetti party! Get ready to feast your eyes on a dazzling array of flowers like desert marigolds, lupines, poppies, and more, some of which might've been napping for ages.
These floral fireworks are as rare as a unicorn sighting, with the last major bloom in California's Mojave Desert making waves back in 2019.
Mark your calendars for late March to late May, with mid-April as the prime time for cactus flowers to strut their stuff. Only in Our State has mapped out some wildflower routes for your road-tripping pleasure! And hey, 4th graders, here's a cool perk: snag a free pass to all federal fee areas - just hop online, earn your pass, print the voucher, and voilà! Happy trails!

Ghost Town Day Trip
Tips to see the mega desert wildflowersbloom in and around the Las Vegas valley, hiking spots and day trips!
Living in Las Vegas, we have a wide varity of cool day trip spots like the quirky Calico Ghost Town, a short hop away.
This wild west town boomed in the 1800s, packed with silver-seeking folks until the silver rush faded. Fast forward to the 1950s, a hero named Walter Knott swooped in, reviving the town's glory days.
Knott, the founder of Knott's Berry Farm, purchased the town and restored many of its buildings. Today, Calico Ghost Town is a county park and a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the preserved buildings, which include a schoolhouse, a saloon, a general store, and several homes. There are also shops, restaurants, and museums that offer a glimpse into the town's history.
Nowadays, you can camp like a cowboy, explore the town, and soak in the ghostly vibes at your leisure.
If you plan to take the roughly 2-hour drive, there are a few stops along the way that VKZ readers highly recommend. Peggy Sue's 50s Diner is a hit with road trippers, serving up nostalgia and good eats. And don't miss Eddie's World for a sugar rush and quirky finds. Liberty Sculpture Park and Dorsey's Dog House add a sprinkle of charm to this wild west adventure!

Cosplay Cool
Since 2008, Ziggy Cosplay has turned thrift store finds into wearable art inspired by various shows and video games. As part of our monthly dive into local cosplayers and creators, we asked Ziggy to share what inspires them.
Howdidyougetstarted?
I started by going to thrift stores and buying/alteringclothes.Ididn'tknowhowto sew, so I made sure to pick characters that were at my skill level. For example, my first cosplay was L from Death Note, who wears a plain white t-shirt and jeans. I taught myself to sew, work with EVA foam, prime and paint, and other skills. Each costume teachesmesomethingnew.
Whatdoyouenjoyaboutcosplay?
Cosplayisatypeofartthatcombinesmyjoyof creating with my love of anime, video games, and all things nerdy. Making costumes challenges me. I put lots of work, sweat, and tears into each costume. Being able to wear it andfullyembodythecharacterissofulfilling!I look at myself in the mirror and am like, "wow...Imadeallofthis."
Favoritelocalcosplayer?
Shuvimari is a great Vegas cosplayer! Their makeup skills are insane. They literally transformintoeachcharacter.
Whatadvicecanyouoffersomeonelookingtostart?
If you want to start making your own costumes, I always recommend thrift stores and doing projects that are within your skillrange.Startwithsimplerprojectstolearnandcreateagreat cosplay while avoiding frustration. Cosplay is meant to be fun, andit'shardtohavefunwhenyou'retoooverwhelmed!Gaining skills takes time, so don't rush it and start with things you ' re comfortable doing. If you are unsure how to do anything, YouTube and TikTok are fantastic resources and most likely haveatutorialforwhateveryoumightneed.
