A WELCOME MESSAGE FROM

CHAMBER PRESIDENT AND CEO

The Vegas Chamber kicked off 2024 with a very successful Preview Las Vegas last month, convening 1,500 members of the Nevada business community to hear what’s ahead for our region. It was wonderful to see so many of you there – thank you for sharing your time with us.

Preview has always been the place where our business community comes together to hear from thought leaders and experts about the future: opportunities we can capitalize on; threats we need to navigate; and challenges we want to overcome.

At Preview, we learned about: • Brand new data was revealed about the economic impact of the first Las Vegas Grand Prix race and plans to make it even better for our community moving forward.

• Regional collaboration initiatives on infrastructure such as expanding Interstate 15 to better connect Las Vegas with Southern California and Arizona.

• Opportunities that the A’s and Major League Baseball will bring to Southern Nevada.

• Strategies to elevate the Las Vegas brand and destination globally, and how our city is leveraging mega-events as catalysts for economic development initiatives.

These are exciting opportunities, advantages that most cities do not enjoy. The question we need to ask ourselves: how are we going to take advantage of our advantages?

The Vegas Chamber is focused on building a strong future.

Convening the community and building collaboration to get big things done has been our role and focus since 1911.

But it’s going to take engagement and cooperation from our entire region to maximize the next phase of growth and prosperity. At Preview, I issued a call to action to our members – and the entire community – to “get in the game”.

One meaningful way you can “get in the game” is by engaging in the Southern Nevada Forum which kicks off on February 13 at 8:00 a.m. at Las Vegas City Hall.

Southern Nevada Forum is open to everyone in our community to work together along with Southern Nevada legislators to identify priorities to improve

our region ahead of the 2025 Nevada Legislature.

Since its inception in 2013, it has created many meaningful changes in Southern Nevada including investments in education, UNLV School of Medicine, and transportation infrastructure.

Another opportunity for engagement is attending the Board of Trustees Installation Luncheon on February 28 at Wynn Las Vegas. During this event, you will hear from our 2024 Chamber Chairwoman Betsy Fretwell about her vision and priorities for this year, especially when it comes working together to make progress on regional issues.

When we work together in this state, all things are possible. And that is what the Vegas Chamber has stood for since its doors opened 113 years ago. Join us, engage, and Get in the Game.

KENNY GUINN CENTER FOR POLICY PRIORITIES 2023 was a busy year for the Kenny Guinn Center for Policy Priorities, a nonprofit, nonpartisan policy center addressing key challenges faced by policymakers in Nevada.

Last January, three-term Assemblywoman Jill Tolles took the helm as Executive Director and recruited former Legislative Counsel Bureau Research Director Michael Stewart, and then Vice President of the Reno+Sparks Chamber of Commerce Kristine Caliger, to join her leadership team.

The Board, under the leadership of Chair Phil Satre and Governance Chair Don Snyder, recruited five new directors including Kerry Bubolz, Alex Bybee, Erin Russell, Tammi Tiger, and John Valery White.

The Center also added new research staff and academic partners at UNR, UNLV, and Boyd Law School, including new Director of Education, Anna Colquitt, who holds a law degree from Boyd Law School and is soon to finish her PhD in Educational Psychology from UNLV.

• Gaps in services for human trafficking survivors in Southern Nevada and what is needed to stop cycles of exploitation.

• How the Nevada legislature apportioned the state budget by category as compared to past biennia and the state’s comprehensive spending picture, including the use of federal dollars.

Ongoing research projects include an examination of Nevada’s new per-pupil funding formula in schools across the state, the governance and sustainability of early childcare systems in Nevada, artificial intelligence policy considerations, tax abatements, and more.

The team produced more than eight research projects on education, economic, fiscal, social, and governance policy, including reports that focused on: • What drives youth to drop out of school, how to prevent them from leaving school, and how to reengage them in alternative workforce development and educational programs.

• The reasons Nevada experienced the third largest drop in workforce participation after the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in the hospitality industry.

review Las Vegas is the annual Vegas Chamber go-to economic forecasting event for the region. Last year’s event teased the potential economic impacts of sports tourism in 2023. One year later, the Vegas business community gathered at the new Fontainebleau Las Vegas to learn about the state of our economy as a whole after a year of remarkable achievements in the city.

In addition to highlighting the business offerings within Fontainebleau Las Vegas, Preview Las Vegas 2024 focused on new opportunities stemming from the opening of MSG Sphere, the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix, the upcoming Super Bowl LVIII, and other economic “wins” for the Southern Nevada community.

Market Vice President at Cox Las Vegas (Presenting Sponsor of Preview Las Vegas) Janet Uthman opened the show pointing out Cox’s work in the community and their role at many events in the city including the BIG GAME. “Here in Southern Nevada, Cox Fiber powers some of the biggest names in town including the Las Vegas Convention Center, T-Mobile Arena, and Allegiant Stadium, one of the world’s most connected stadiums.”

Governor Joe Lombardo followed with a focus on supporting small business entrepreneurs and major industries, as well as excitement for the Super Bowl, stating, “There is no better city in the world to host the biggest sporting event of the year. Las Vegas is ready. We can’t wait for the kickoff.”

“This was an epic year,” Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) CEO Steve Hill said during his presentation, citing a 20 percent yearover-year increase in convention and conference attendance, increased tourism, and top-tier special events, including the inaugural Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix executives Renee Wilm and Betsy Fretwell (2024 Vegas Chamber Chairwoman) shared the economic impact of the inaugural race, adding that there was incredible demand and interest in the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix was F1’s most watched race of last season, reaching 2.7 Billion people worldwide.

Applied Analysis Principal Jeremy Aguero joined the group after his dynamic Perilous Prosperity presentation and added, “That’s more than half a billion dollars in economic impact…think about that ripple effect.” “Our prosperity is not by accident,” Aguero stated. “It can be difficult overall, but we keep going forward because we’re doing pretty remarkable things as a community.”

Executive Director of the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, M.J. Maynard moderated the panel discussion focused on the evolving landscape of infrastructure projects in Nevada, especially those that connect us with our regional partners of Arizona and California. The panel included Vice President of Integrated Energy Services at NV Energy Marie Steele, Director of Nevada Department of Transportation Tracy Larkin-Thomason, Professor of Political Science and the Executive Director of The Lincy Institute and Brookings Mountain West Dr. David F. Damore.

With Major League Baseball making its way to the greatest arena on earth, Vegas Chamber President and CEO, Mary Beth Sewald, welcomed A’s Owner, John Fisher, to discuss the potential impacts and opportunities that the A’s in Vegas will bring the city and the sport. Fisher highlighted our city’s allure, economy, and mastery of major events as a perfect fit for a Major League Baseball team.

“There’s 2.3 million people here — it feels like all of them are baseball fans, which is really a great thing,” Fisher said. “Just seeing other professional sports teams, whether it be the Aces, Raiders, or the Golden Knights, the degree of local support has just been incredible.”

A super highlight from Preview included Anna Siefert, who has dedicated her career to supporting small businesses, women, and minority-owned businesses in low-income Nevada communities, winning two tickets to Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium. Anna also played a crucial role as a Nevada community liaison for the Women’s Business Enterprise Council-West, contributing to the growth of certified women business owners. The tickets were presented by Peter O’Reilly, executive vice president of club business for the National Football League and Steve Hill, CEO of the LVCVA.

2024 VEGAS CHAMBER CHAIRWOMAN BETSY FRETWELL Mary Beth: First of all, we are so looking forward to your year as Chairwoman of the Vegas Chamber. You have a new opportunity with the Las Vegas Grand Prix and Formula One. Tell us about that, and congratulations.

Betsy Fretwell: Thank you. I am really excited about it. The racing event was nothing short of magnificent.

The team that was in place, and frankly, all the county agencies associated with it, and all the community partners pulled off something no short of a miracle. How do you get a building built here in 11 months, get a circuit

built to the international race standards? And while there were probably some challenges along the way, which we have all heard about, it was an incredible event for our community. I am excited about this role. We also have this incredible new facility called the Grand Prix Plaza.

We are going to be programming that and providing a whole lot of community opportunities to use that facility in ways that maybe we haven’t even envisioned yet. We are really excited about the opportunities.

MB: It could not have happened to a better person or a more uniquely qualified person. With your background in business, in government, being a former city manager, you understand the state, you understand the people, and most of all, you understand our needs. We are going to connect what they have built with the race and the Grand Prix to the community. How exciting is that?

BF: I think any time you are starting something brand new, there are going to be learning lessons. Those learning lessons help you build the pathway forward.

And then you just accentuate the positive, but you also take those opportunities of learning and challenges and things that could be better, you build them into the next mix. And that is the plan for 2024. And it is going to be an incredible event, and I am excited to be a part of it.

Nevada is an easy place for small businesses to operate.

Talk to us a little bit about that and what your thoughts are.

BF: For people who do not know me very well, my background was city manager, and then I went to work for Switch, and I got a technology underpinning in my experience space, if you will. And then I went out on my own and started my own independent consulting business. That was an eye-opener. I wish I had known as city manager what I now know.

MB: We all are. The race was over-the-top amazing for Las Vegas and the state.

BF: And our community looked so incredible. The amount of global attention that we got was second to none. And those things are important for us to continue to build our tourist base, to really invite back that international tourist, right? The people who want to come and love our city like we do. I am excited for the challenge. I am excited for the opportunity to be the new chair of the Vegas Chamber, and I have this new COO job. It is going to be a great year.

So, I am in a unique position to be able to identify areas where we could vastly improve and expedite some of these things that make it difficult for people to start a business. Some people just do not have those resources, they do not have that knowledge. And there is a role for the Vegas Chamber to play in that to help expedite those processes.

I have talked with the Secretary of State about this. We have a great opportunity with the new portal that they’re working on, Project Orion. We need to get all those state regulatory portals working together. Let’s work with our Secretary of State and let’s make that easier for our businesses. I am really looking forward to that opportunity and working with you and Paul Moradkhan to keep an eye on that, get small business voices injected into that process so that we get it right.

MB: I think you will be uniquely positioned to bring a lot more resources to our small businesses, and to our members of the chamber and non-members alike. We want the entire community to grow, and you will be in a position to make those connections through the Vegas Chamber.

BF: Absolutely. One of the things that I found impactful was the Super Bowl, and how they have taken a really small business inclusive approach. And I am really hoping to be able to build that into our approach with this race.

So, with that nexus of the chamber leadership role and this new leadership role for the Grand Prix, there is a beautiful marriage to be made there. And who better than the Vegas Chamber? The Vegas Chamber knows this inside and out for these small businesses. So, I am really excited for that opportunity to see how these two things work really well together for us.

MB: We are excited. Congratulations again. One of your priorities for this year is making sure that Southern

MB: I think having firsthand knowledge of SilverFlume… the predecessors did the best they could with what they had, but now it is time to revamp that, and I applaud your efforts moving forward. Let’s touch on regionalism. That is another priority of yours. That is something the Vegas Chamber works on on a local, state, and federal level, but I think your ideas around regionalism and some of the things that we need to work on there are going to be incredibly important to move the needle ahead for our community.

BF: Having worn all these different hats, I have been able to see things from a variety of perspectives. And we have an incredible opportunity, particularly in the I-15 corridor, to really advance the conversation. You have $3 billion that is going into the Brightline train solution along the I-15 corridor. There have been conversations for years about where the interchanges need to go. Where do we have overpasses? The lifeblood of this country and our region is I-15. It is one of the busiest supply line interstates

in our country. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity.

This is a great time to really move that forward. It is going to help the county, it will help Henderson, and it is going to help Southern California. I think the Vegas Chamber can play a unique role in that because our business communities rely on that corridor for our supplies and, to a great degree, our customers.

MB: Another exciting thing that is right around the corner is the Super Bowl. And that really represents a lot of opportunity for us. And we have been working together on a new initiative called LOCATE. Tell us a little bit about why that came about and what we are doing with it.

live here we are not just a resort destination. We love our resorts, but we also have churches and schools and grocery stores. And sometimes people forget what it is really like to be here.

BF: We want to create that time for exploration. We want to make it easy for people to learn about it and make those connections that are so important in the business community so that people have a network when they come here. The other thing is it helps us work better together among the business community and the public sector agencies. And LOCATE is one of the first efforts.

I think it will be one of the most successful efforts in pulling both sectors together towards one goal. And I am really proud of that. It took a lot of effort on behalf of a lot of folks, including you, Mary Beth, to help shepherd this along, whether it is the Howard Hughes Corporation, UNLV, Caesars Entertainment, a whole bunch of companies have come together and organizations to make this a winning formula. And I am really excited about it.

MB: The other part that is exciting about this is that we are kicking off this initiative with the Super Bowl.

However, this is a model that could be used with other sporting events in town. It might be something we work with Formula One or the Grand Prix.

BF: Our state, particularly our region, has been making major investments in sporting venues and the ability to attract big sporting events like the Super Bowl. It would be great if we could take those big magnets where all the CEOs and big companies want to show up and introduce them to our community.

This helps us with developing the workforce and opportunities for our workforce so that people can have good paying jobs that they want to do. And it helps us be able to diversify in a way that when we’re going through the ups and downs of the economy, we have more businesses here of a diverse nature so that some will soar when the economy is in an odd place and others may hit a little low point or a pause.

We want to make sure that we are building an economy that is resilient. Through events like this, people want to come here. They already want to come here. They also come here for conventions. When they are here for conventions, they are really here to do that business.

So, these mega events give us an opportunity to really introduce some of the CEOs who want to be here for those events in a way that they may not ordinarily get on the vacation or on the convention side. We want CEO to CEO conversations to be happening, so that those CEOs fall in love with this community just like all of us have.

And so, in short, that is what LOCATE is all about. Pick us, move here, bring your employees here or expand here.

We want you here.

MB: Yes because Las Vegas is an amazing place to live. This will give these CEOs and these companies an opportunity to really get a flavor for what it is like to

BF: Right. Obviously, we have world-renowned events.

You have these incredible UFC events. You have incredible golf tournaments. You have Formula One and the Las Vegas Grand Prix and hopefully another Super Bowl in our future. We want to build the infrastructure to be able to take advantage of these mega events that are very attractive, that people really want to go to and use those to improve our economy beyond the heads in beds moment for that weekend event.

MB: Phoenix did this successfully as well. So, I wish we could say we invented the wheel, but we are taking some lessons, some best practices from other cities who have done just this.

BF: Our city is incredible at emulating what others have done and making it better than ever, and that is our goal.

MB: We are well on our way with you at the helm of the Chamber as well. So, let’s zoom out for a second. How long have you lived in Las Vegas, and what changes have you seen since you have been in Vegas?

BF: Over 30 years. When I first started here, I was writing speeches for commissioners that talked about our population being less than 800,000. And so, it has been a very interesting ride for me. And I feel so blessed. You can make dreams come true in this town. I have been very lucky to see it. We have had incredible growth in the resort corridor. We have had incredible diversification.

We are one of the most networked cities with digital infrastructure, and that’s kind of a sleeper issue. It is critically important to the future economy, the world economy. A lot of it is based right here. It is completely invisible to our public, to our citizens most of the time. We set the standard for travel, entertainment, and tourism.

associations across the state. I mean, I have never seen a time where everyone, so many people have really pulled together to make all these things work on behalf of the City of Las Vegas, Clark County, and the State of Nevada.

From a quality-of-life standpoint, this place is hard to beat. So, I am very excited about what I’ve experienced.

I feel blessed to have had the opportunities that I have had. And I am super excited about the opportunities that this town presents for so many people who have chosen to live here. And it has just been a great ride.

MB: Agreed. I am looking forward to your chairmanship here at the Vegas Chamber. Congratulations again on your new position, your new role with the Las Vegas Grand Prix. We are looking forward to this year’s race and all the wonderful things that you are going to do for our community, both in that role and as your role at the Chamber.

MB: There are a lot of amazing opportunities on the horizon. We are all working together. That is the best part, too, is that all of the municipalities, the other trade

BF: It is very interesting to think about. I think a lot of those seeds were sown during the pandemic. And for a moment there, I was very worried that we were going to squander that silver lining of a terrible time for our community. But it feels like we have had a resurgence of that collaboration. And I am really excited about it. It is a good thing because we all need to work together to be successful.

BF: It is going to be a great year.

n today’s digital landscape, data privacy isn’t just a buzzword; it’s an essential part of business strategy. Recent cyberattacks on major Las Vegas casinos like MGM and Caesars have thrown this into sharp relief. But what does data privacy mean for you, especially as a member of the Vegas Chamber, where business diversity is as expansive as the desert sky?

Understanding Data Privacy Data privacy refers to the proper handling, processing, storage, and disposal of various types of sensitive information like customer data, employee records and trade secrets to name a few. It’s about respecting user preferences and complying with legal obligations. Given the varied nature of businesses throughout our state, understanding these principles is crucial.

A fundamental step for any business in safeguarding data privacy is to develop a comprehensive asset inventory. This inventory should detail all assets that require protection from cyber threats, including hardware like computers and servers, software applications, wireless networks, and critically, the sensitive data handled by your business. A. Five years from now, God willing, all sectors of GoWithMelissa.com will be fully functional and operational for employees, vendors, and our customers all over the globe. Q. How have you grown personally from starting your own business?

A. When you are growing a business, you yourself are growing with it. You start to understand your own likes, dislikes, and understanding of the world a little more and more. From putting events together in the basement and charging adults for admission to having a radio sports show and making it to a live studio audience. Each new project takes you on a journey to the unknown, and if you are not willing for the constant change you will never make it. While starting your new business and beginning to take it on every day without an understanding of the future, you realize what you are capable of, and the impact you can have. Even if some businesses never make it to the success level you are striving for, take notice of how blessed to have the opportunity to create something wonderful really is. With the knowledge and understanding each business gave me the chance to start over and build stronger seemed more and more possible. God created a creative mind striving

to be used to its full potential and it would be a waste not to show how much I appreciate the challenge he has given me every day. The older I have become the crazier the projects I am looking to take on, if they are helping others.

Q. Why did you decide to start your own business?

A. Starting a business is second nature for me. At a young age I was blessed to be able to work for a company called Russo’s on the Bay handling large events in New York City. Every detail was proudly being taken care of, regardless how minute the task might have seemed. Having such fantastic work ethic always surrounding me, it gave me the understanding I can do this, too. We were in the hospitality industry and I found it overwhelmingly rewarding to help others.

From understanding my work ethics, the company had a few other restaurants, lounges, and other businesses where I started doing inventory systems for and the list went on. Today over 20 years later, owning GoWithMelissa.com and some of the companies within the website is a dream starting to manifest. My goals are to help as many business owners and their staff around the world get to the million-dollar status they should be.

Q. What is your favorite aspect of being a Vegas Chamber member?

CCSD school board accused of ‘segregating’ new members.

Antonio Pierce was named the head coach of the Raiders.

“Our intent was to add additional voices and expertise to the school board and from our local governments and community members and they want their voices heard at the school board,” said Paul Moradkhan, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, Vegas Chamber. “I think from the chamber perspective we are disappointed.”

Pierce became the Raiders’ interim coach after Josh McDaniels was fired Oct. 31 and guided them to a 5-4 finish. He won over players during that stretch, including stars Davante Adams and Maxx Crosby. Pierce earned universal support inside the locker room by embracing the Raiders’ way and encouraging his players to do the same.

Today, Governor Joe Lombardo and Controller Andy Matthews announced the launch of the new Nevada Open Finance Portal, a website that provides detailed, up-to-date information on state spending.

The website, located at https://checkbook.nv.gov, features data on the state checkbook, budget, payroll, and pension disbursements.
