Murray Logan Construction, Newest Vecellio Group Member, Building Local Pump Station Murray Logan Construction, a heavy and marine construction company founded in 1968 by Murray D. Logan, became part of the Vecellio Group in late October of 2021. Company President David Logan always wanted to ensure the longterm success of both the business and his employees. private customers. Its first project as part of the Vecellio Group is a pump station at Avenir, a new 4,752-acre sustainable community located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. The pump station, electrical building, and fuel platform are being constructed to control water overflow and redirect it to existing wetlands that sur round the new community. Avenir includes 3,900 new homes, a working farm, private golf course, and 300 acres of lakes and waterways.

And no short cut is worth the risk to our employees, our business, or our customers. Hal Jones Provides Quick Emergency Bridge Repair

In March, Jacksonville Fire and Rescue crews were called to battle a fire at an overpass along Edgewood Avenue. Flames scorched the concrete overpass which was immediately closed until it could be inspected and repaired. Because the overpass is a critical part of the city’s infrastructure, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) had to move quickly. They contacted Hal Jones Contractor, a division of Vecellio & Grogan, with whom they had a strong relationship. After submitting a bid, Hal Jones was quickly hired to perform the emergency repair, which required the removal and repair of a one-hundred-foot span of the overpass. Hal Jones had to saw-cut the bridge deck, remove and replace three type IV beams, repair a fourth, and pour more than 100 feet of new concrete deck.

Jax Beach Pier & Times Union Projects Nearly Complete Work continued at the Jacksonville Beach Pier where crews finalized major repairs after hurricanes Matthew and Irma (in sequential years) almost completely destroyed the original structure. The temporary trestle has now been completely removed and the city kicked-off the opening the new pier with a fireworks celebration the weekend of July 4th.
The tie-back system for the Times Union bulkhead project, which includes 90 feet of H-pile and two and a half inch diameter tie rods, is ready for installation before crews prepare to pour the remainder of the cap. When the cap is complete, crews will finish the remaining portion of the adjacent floating dock.
Aluminum railing has been added to one of the floating docks scheduled for completion in August 2022.

All customer pipes are planned to be on the rack system by second quarter, 2023. Construction will then take place to replace the sea wall, widen the berth, and dredge the ocean floor to allow for larger ships to access the port. South Florida Materials Corp. recently completed the construction of four new fuel tanks (above right). The tanks measure 70 ft. high and are 115 ft. in diameter. The interior of the tanks include a twopart epoxy liner applied to reduce the risk of corrosion on the tank floor and sump. All bare steel materials within the first four feet of the tank are protected. The stainless steel floating arm and pontoons are not coated (bottom right).

Ranger Restoring Wetlands to Ensure Wildlife Survival
Ranger Construction is working with the South Florida Water Management District to restore more than five thousand acres of wetland area to its natural condition to reintroduce original vegetation and better sustain native wildlife. Teams are clearing and leveling multiple farm beds within the four areas being restored in Hendry County. A seepage
management system is being constructed along with a pump station, culvert crossings, inter-restoration area water control structures, and a new three-phase electrical service for the pump station. The $35.2 million project is adjacent to protected Native American lands which must be in constant consideration as the project continues over the next five years.

Ranger Completes Road Realignment Project
Ranger continued work through the winter months to form and pour concrete for an electrical duct bank (bottom left) on RCA Center Dr., a road realignment project in Palm Beach Gardens, for Florida Power & Light’s new headquarter building complex. After installing two double-stacked J-box structures, electrical conduit, and vault structures, crews compacted and leveled the remaining area in final preparation for sod and seeding (below right) before completion.

Vecellio & Grogan Ramps Up in the Second Quarter In April, Vecellio & Grogan bridge crews completed setting fourteen, prestressed concrete girders (photo at immediate right) at three separate Rockingham bridge sites. The 134-ft. girders are an integral part of the I-73/I-74 Bypass project in Richmond County, N.C. When complete, the seven-mile-long project will boast a new four-lane, median-divided freeway. More recently, crews coordinated with the Virginia Department of Transportation, Virginia State Police, and multiple subcontractors to seamlessly change the traffic pattern on I-81 overnight onto a new bridge. The new bridge (far right) is built in the median, parallel and partially beneath the existing structure so two lanes of traffic can be maintained in each direction during construction. Vecellio & Grogan was recently named prime contractor on a new bridge construction project in Ft. Pierce, Florida. The

project, SR-A1A Bridge over the IntraCoastal Waterway (ICWW), has a nearly four-year timeline, and is valued at more than $111 million. V&G will be replacing an existing twolane, 2,100-ft. long bridge with a new 4,152-ft. fixed bridge crossing over the FEC Railroad, Old Dixie Highway, and the ICWW. The new structure, expected to start later this year, will have 85-ft. of vertical clearance and 125-ft. of horizontal clearance at the main waterway channel. It will also include buffered bike lanes and an eight-foot, barrier-protected pedestrian sidewalk on the bridge’s south side.

Sharpe Crews Take to the Streets After Winter Season Sharpe Bros. started the year strong with multiple projects throughout North Carolina. A significant amount of that work is in the Winston-Salem area where they are replacing concrete streets with asphalt (left). These projects began in 2021 and include pavement removal, drainage, paving, and curb & gutter installation. Over eleven thousand tons of rock and nearly five thousand tons of asphalt were used on the roadway project. Sharpe is a subcontractor for parking lot and roadway paving for the Publix Distribution Center, with work to be completed this summer (above right). A recent project for the City of Greensboro includes the realignment, widening, and drainage of Alamance Church Road. This is a two-year project valued at $13.7 million (bottom right). Sharpe is currently working on various resurfacing projects across multiple counties. These include multiple streets in Randolph, Guilford, and Rockingham counties, and a major mill and resurfacing project at Winston-Salem Airport. The Vecellio Companies again participated in National Work Zone Awareness Week which took place April 11-15, 2022. The National Asphalt Pavement Association’s 2022 campaign - Watch For Us - educated the public on the dangers of distracted driving in work zones. “Go Orange Day” is an important and traditional part of the week. Employees wore T-shirts bearing a special message to reinforce their commitment to safety on the job. We thank EVERYONE for particpating! White Rock Quarries Continues as Top Producer White Rock Quarries remains one of the nation’s highest-volume producers of limerock aggregates and screenings, even in an economy that continues to challenge other industries. Limerock continues to be carefully drilled, blasted, and excavated with its 105-cu.-yd. capacity dragline (photo at right). The material is then hauled off to be processed at the facility’s crushing plant, creating various sizes of aggregate that will be used for roadway base and embankments, in asphalt pavement mixes, and to make concrete products.

V&G Managers Set the Stage for 2022 In February, Vecellio & Grogan held its annual Managers Meeting in Jacksonville, Florida. The event gathered management teams from V&G and Hal Jones Contractor to meet, share job information, and ensure everyone was aligned to drive business in 2022.
Matt Farley, Vice President of Vecellio & Grogan, led the meetings with support from Vecellio Management Services leadership. Corporate HR, Safety, IT and Legal discussions provided important information for managers to embrace and share with their teams.
James E. (Eddie) Allsopp III, passed away in February at the young age of 62. Eddie spent 30 years in the mining and construction materials business before being named Vice President at White Rock Quarries in 2010. He was a former Chairman of the Florida Limerock and Aggregates Institute and a former Board Member, Executive Committee Member, and Chairman of the Florida Concrete and Products Association. Our hearts go out to Eddie’s wife, Anna, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL and his two sons, Samuel and Gray, of West Palm Beach.

Robert (Bob) Addison retired after 16 years of service with Hal Jones Contractor. Bob was the company’s Equipment Manager, managing repairs and maintenance for all Hal Jones equipment both in-yard and on all field projects. Bob’s loyalty and in-depth knowledge of cranes was a tremendous value to the company. He will be greatly missed.

Earl S. Miles
Earl Miles retired after 19 years with Hal Jones Contractor. Earl started his career as Field Engineer, responsible for field layout of 10
bridge and marine work. He was promoted to Superintentent, and later made the transition to Yard Manager. Earl’s years of experience with equipment and materials made him a valuable asset, able to mobilize quickly to meet the specific needs of any job site.
Gilbert W. Perreault
Gilbert W. Perrault began his career with Vecellio & Grogan in 2016 after retiring as an Operating Engineer in New England. Gilbert was a skilled Finish-Grade and Finish-Slope Operator. His coworkers will miss his professionalism and how easy he was to work with.
Agustin Tuesca
Agustin Tuesca joined White Rock Quarries in August 2005. He was a skilled Loader Operator throughout his time at White Rock and will be remembered for a high commitment to safety and quality.
Cleveland G. Smellie
2017, as a Laborer-Seawall. He is remembered for being a committed worker who never missed a day of work. His supervisor wishes he had many more workers just like Cleveland.
Rodney Thaxton
Rodney Thaxton started with Vecellio & Grogan in February 2008. A proud Union member, Rodney most recently worked as an Off-Road Truck Driver with V&G on the Rockingham, North Carolina project. He retired in March of this year and will be greatly missed on the job.
Ruben Washington
Ruben Washington began his career at White Rock Quarries in 1989. A Haul Truck Operator, member of a Survey Crew, and Loader Operator at retirement, Ruben was known for his attention to detail and operational safety, as well as his sense of humor.
