PBC Safety Council Honors Vecenergy, Ranger For Maintaining Low OSHA Rates

Summer Safety Alert: Beware of Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion HEAT STROKE can be fatal if medical help is not summoned immediately! Symptoms include a body temperature of 105° or above, hot dry skin, mental confusion, delirium, loss of consciousness, convulsions or coma.

Call for medical help immediately! Get the person out of the sun, pour lots of cool water on him or her to thoroughly soak the clothing, and fan vigorously to reduce body temperature. Heat stroke results from a combination of heat, exertion, and high humidity that doesn’t allow perspiration to evaporate normally, driving up the body temperature to a dangerously high level.

HEAT EXHAUSTION results from not drinking enough fluids to replace what is lost through perspiration. Symptoms include weakness, fatigue, nausea or headache. The remedy is to get out of the sun and slowly drink small amounts of liquid until recovery. If the condition is severe, call for medical help!

GROUND CONTROL Ranger Lands Airport Projects, Meets High Standards, Departs On Schedule Building and paving roads is already a demanding profession, but when the “roads” are used for launching and landing airborne traffic, things get racheted up to an even higher level of precision.

Ranger Construction is known across Central and Southeast Florida for its site development, asphalt contracting and road building services, but thanks to its focus on quality and customer service, the company is also a go-to solution for airports needing runway,

taxiway or apron construction, rehabilitation or resurfacing.

Successfully completing a multitude of airport projects in recent years, Ranger has earned industry awards and praise from airport officials for its ability to meet demanding production specifications and project schedules.

Ranger performed extensive work at Palm Beach International Airport, for example, consisting of three sections: Air Cargo, Concourse A and B, and Taxiway D/E (pictured here).

Ranger also has completed airport projects at the following locations in recent years:

White Rock Has Firm Control On Quality White Rock Quarries in Miami, FL, supplies the state’s construction industry with high-quality limestone aggregates and screenings.

Quality control is assured through rigorous daily testing that verifies all materials, from base rock for road foundations, to aggregates for asphalt mixes, to superfine materials for concrete mixes, are comprised

of the proper material sizes and concentrations.

nies have been recognized with Diamond Achievement Commendations from the National Asphalt Pavement Association.

High standards are a way of life throughout the Vecellio companies, and this extends to Ranger Construction’s asphalt facilities throughout central and southeast Florida, as well as Sharpe Bros.’ multiple locations in the greater Greensboro, NC, area.

Ranger Receives Six Quality Awards For Roadway, Site Projects cluded construction of two additional inside lanes along I-95 for approximately nine miles, and milling and resurfacing the existing lanes. It also required the widening of several bridge pairs as well as the reconstruction of ramps at the SR-70 and SR-68 interchanges. The improvements accommodate six additional projects planned for the area.

Ranger Construction has received a Build Florida Award from the Associated General Contractors of America for extensive site development and paving work at Palm Beach Outlets, a regional shopping destination located in West Palm Beach.

Ranger also received five Quality In Construction Awards from the National Asphalt Pavement Association for these recent Florida projects: • I-95 Design-Build project in Ft. Pierce. This multi-year project in-

• I-4 Improvements in Polk County.

This mill and overlay project required the company to pave in heavy traffic.

Challenges included delays caused by bad weather and the need for lane closures. The company placed almost 54,000 tons of asphalt in two lifts totaling 2.25 inches.

Ranger had to work around heavy traffic.

• Work on CR-68 in Vero Beach.

The company milled the road, then placed a total of 2.5 inches of asphalt in the intermediate and surface courses. This project also won a Florida Department of Transportation award for excellence in paving.

• Work on U.S. 1 in Rockledge.

The company milled the road then placed a 1.5-inch course of binder asphalt, followed by a .75-inch surface asphalt course.

• SR-60 Improvements in Yeehaw Junction. The company milled the roadway, then replaced the removed asphalt pavement with four courses of paving material, including a .75-inch surface course.

Ranger Adds Host Of New Projects To Work List

Near Orlando, Ranger is milling and resurfacing about 16 miles of SR-417 (Central Florida Greeneway), between International Drive and Moss Park Road, under a $18.5-million contract.

In Volusia County, Ranger has started work on a $6.4-million project to resurface, restore and rehabilitate more than five miles of I-4/SR-400.

The company is milling and resurfacing 12.5 miles of SR-33 (Commonwealth Ave.) in northern Polk County.

Also in Polk County, crews are widening, milling, resurfacing and making

other improvements to nearly seven miles of SR-60, from CR-630 to the Kissimmee River Bridge.

The company also picked up a City of Oviedo street resurfacing contract in Seminole County, while in Okeechobee County, crews are repaving more than two miles of SR-70 under a 200-day, $2.75-million contract.

To assist with hurricane evacuation and other emergency needs, Ranger added six feet of paved and gravel shoulder to a two-mile, two-lane section of CR-512 in Indian River County just west of I-95.

More than three miles of milling and resurfacing work has begun on Old Dixie Highway in Palm Beach County on a project valued about $1 million.

Farther south, Ranger is resurfacing 10 miles of SR-90 (US-41/Tamiami Trail) in Miami-Dade County under a $4.1-million contract.

As Ranger Construction works on two I-75 design-build jobs near Ft. Lauderdale, SR-710 reconstruction in Palm Beach County, and St. Johns Heritage Parkway construction in Melbourne, among numerous other public- and private-sector projects throughout central and southeast Florida, the company also has a number of newer jobs underway.

Ranger Construction is rehabilitating more than five miles of I-4/SR-400 in Volusia County, FL, in a project involving night work. Equipment includes a new CAT PM200 milling machine.

After more than 37 years of dedicated service to Ranger Construction, Asphalt Plant Superintendent Charles Purvis retired earlier this year.

by Rubin Construction in 1978, just before it became part of the Vecellio Group and was renamed Ranger Construction.

Charles’ work ensured highquality asphalt production, not only for Ranger paving crews, but for FOB sales as well. The job involved constant attention and commitment, and Charles proved himself more than worthy of the task.

He was highly skilled and completely reliable, always dedicated to meeting and exceeding safety and production standards.

Texas, a brand new Crowley Maritime vessel chartered by Exxon Mobil, berthed in Port Evergades in February to offload petroleum products through South Florida Petroleum Services, a Vecenergy operation.

KEITH BRADLEY Keith Bradley, a former Vecellio & Grogan Project Engineer, died in January 2016.

Keith retired several years ago after 21 years of service. He started with the company in 1991 and worked on I-181 (I-26) in Unicoi County, TN; Greenville-Spartanburg Airport, Greer, SC; US-421 in Wilkesboro, NC; and the Wake Expressway in Wake County, NC, among other projects.

In 2003, Keith was assigned as the Project Engineer for a group of jobs at Piedmont Triad Airport in North Carolina for a new FedEx Mid-Atlantic Hub. The work included Bryan Boulevard relocation, Runway Phases I and II, Honda site preparation Phases I and II, and the FedEx Building site work.

Keith also worked in Grant County, WV, performing engineering work on the Corridor H Bismark-Foreman Project for the WVDOH.

FULVIO J. DAVILA Fulvio J. Davila, a Heavy Equipment Serviceman at White Rock Quarries, died in January 2016, a victim in an off-duty traffic accident.

Fulvio started as a Mechanic’s Assistant in 2005 and was soon promoted in recognition of his skill and hard work. He was known for always having a positive attitude.

BENNY HALE Benny Hale, a Ranger Construction Project Superintendent who retired after 41 years of service with the Vecellio Group, passed away in April 2016.

Benny was hired by Vecellio & Grogan in West Virginia as a Dozer Operator in 1970. Over the next 15 years he was promoted to hourly Foreman, salaried Foreman, then Assistant Superintendent. He transferred to Ranger Construction in Florida in 1986 as a Project Superintendent. His skills were needed again at V&G in 1994, so Benny temporarily transferred back.

In 1995 Benny returned to Ranger, where he finished out his career. With his extensive knowledge and expertise, he successfully managed both public- and private-sector projects.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia “Peach” Hale, also a retired long-term Ranger Construction employee.

ZACHARIAH “ZACK” MYERS Zachariah “Zack” Myers, a 33-year employee of the Vecellio Group who retired in 2010, passed away in April 2016.

Zack was hired in 1977 at Black Rock Contracting, a division of Vecellio & Grogan at the time. He transferred to Stuart, FL, in 1982, where he managed Stuart Contracting for six years, then transferred to Ranger Construction’s asphalt operations in Ft. Pierce as Plant Superintendent. In 2006 Zack transferred to West Palm Beach, location of the Division’s busiest plant, where he oversaw maintenance operations as Plant Maintenance Foreman.
