OAK HILL SIXTH GRADE

COMPLETION

“Faith in God is the foundation of your education. In faith you will recognize God in your life - your joys, your sorrows, your struggles, your decisions and your choices. With faith you will be convinced that the meaning of your life and of our world is most fully given in the person of Jesus. Through faith you will communicate hope and confidence, for you know that nothing can separate you from God’s love.

– LIFE AT THE SACRED HEART, 1985

On the Cutting Edge

On Sunday, August 18, we had the privilege of revealing the Rull Family Innovation Center, a beautiful new space created by the generosity of donors to our Children’s Challenge at the 2018 Bonne Chance Auction. Thanks to a generous endowment gift from Steve and Joann Rull, our students will be learning and creating in the Rull Family Innovation Center for years to come. The Center houses Engineering, Physics, Robotics, Fine Arts, and Mathematics courses. To see what’s inside and learn more about advances in STEM education at Villa Duchesne, check out page 27!

Dear Sacred Heart FamilY ,

On this, we can agree: The question of how to educate a child remains one of the most important a parent can ask.

As we often state at our admission events, “Here at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill your child will be known and loved, and they will leave us knowing their passion and purpose in this world.”

We are rightly proud of our tradition of giving individualized attention so that our students flourish intellectually, spiritually, and emotionally. Each year, we recommit ourselves to the partnership that we have with all in our school family, to form daughters and sons of the Sacred Heart.

From a very early age, our students are encouraged to be independent and develop strong habits of thinking and learning. Our teachers’ knowledge and skills are exceptional and inspire enthusiasm for effort and growth.

Since the beginning, Sacred Heart schools have collaborated with parents in the promise that our students will be successful. As was true then and is true now, to achieve this, we must have an eye to the future.

As Pope Francis stated earlier this year, “If everything continues as it was, if we spend our days content that ‘this is the way things have always been done,’ then the gift vanishes, smothered by the ashes of fear and concern for defending the status quo.”

The Pope is in very good company; our own St. Madeleine Sophie is quoted as saying, “To hold to routine for fear of innovation is weakness of mind.”

This common value embedded in both quotes inspired us to construct the Rull Family Innovation Center, cut the ribbon on

the Lenke Global Education Center, expand our outdoor classroom, and roll out Family Individualized Tuition (FIT) among many other new initiatives.

Without a doubt, the benefits of a Sacred Heart education far outweigh the costs; the return on this investment pays lifelong dividends! A major advantage to a Sacred Heart education here at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill is that the students are challenged to a higher academic standard, have the opportunity to form authentic relationships with the faculty, enjoy a safe and beautiful campus, and of course, are guided by the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Education. (https://www.vdoh.org/ about-us/our-mission/goals-and-criteria).

We could not do this without you and your support. The pages that follow tell a beautiful story of how this partnership is flourishing and growing. On this, we can agree!

i

In October, we were graced with a special visit from the Superior General of the Society of the Sacred Heart, Barbara Dawson, rscj. She and members of her Central Team traveled to visit Sacred Heart schools in the United States and Canada Province, and they stopped in St. Louis to connect with our students. These interactions reveal the Society’s commitment to international unity and increasing understanding between Sacred Heart Students in the U.S. and Canada and the Society. Sr. Dawson’s visit was an honor and energized our students and our faculty in our mission to reveal the love of Christ to the world!

ALUMNAE/I PARTICIPATION

We recognize our alumnae/i donors by their final graduating class years. Barat Hall and City House closed in 1968, so the years reflected refer to the students’ high school graduation years. Participation percentages are reflective of living alumnae/i for whom we have current contact information. Associated alumnae/i are those who attended another Sacred Heart Network School and have joined the Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill community. We welcome all Sacred Heart alumnae/i and are grateful for their continued leadership and support of our students and our School.

I am a proud graduate of the Villa Duchesne Class of 1988. My high school years gave me some of my best memories and friendships that I still hold dear to this day. When I was in high school, our family had some challenging times, and the school and administration were there by our side, making sure we had the support to navigate that difficult time. That moment was a mere blip on the radar of numerous more joyful occasions, but the sense of family and community made a significant imprint on my heart. Fast forward 30 years, and a dream came true when my husband and I were able to give our twin girls the same gift of a Villa Duchesne education complete with all of the traditions, friendships, community, and love that I experienced. This school is so much more than an incredible institution built on the strong Sacred Heart values. It is a legacy that I support with all of my heart. I can, without a doubt, say that Villa Duchesne helped shape the woman I am today,

Honoring our Legacy

From our Director of Advancement

What a year 2018-19 was – thank you! From the record-breaking success of the 47th Bonne Chance Auction, to the re-envisioned Parent Association, to Cor Unum Annual Giving, to the Honoring Our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative, we advance. We are halfway through our new year, and I am inspired daily as I walk the halls and experience our community coming together in support of our students and educators as we all grow and learn.

Every day, I witness your impact, as our students’ lives are changed because of your generosity, trust, and commitment. Our mission calls us to lead through the lens of the Goals and Criteria, to live lives of faith, to demand academic

excellence, and to provide service to others, while nurturing the traditions formed years ago. Innovative academic programming, facilities growth, and financial sustainability are integral to our ability to provide an educational experience that will serve our students and families. You believe in the power of our Sacred Heart education.

HONORING OUR LEGACY MAJOR GIFTS INITIATIVE

The Honoring Our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative was established to help move Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School forward. As we celebrated the 200th Bicentennial of St. Rose Philippine, our mission, and the roots of our Sacred Heart education, Head of School Michael Baber and the Board of Trustees determined it was time to embark on a major gifts fundraising Initiative. Through this Initiative we honor the Religious of the Sacred Heart and the educators who have made a difference in the

Largest Gift in School History

In November, at our sold-out 2019 Bonne Chance Auction, Head of School Michael F. Baber and Board Chair J. Spencer Finney announced that Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School received a lead-gift commitment of $3 million to the School’s Honoring Our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative. This gift commitment is the single largest gift ever received by the School in its 90-year history!

The generous donors are laying the foundation for a new Student Life Center and gathering space. The Student Life Center Project will include the renovation of the current auditorium into a true theater, the addition of an atrium and events space, as well as an outdoor terrace for our students and community. This incredible investment in the future of the School, with a focus on fostering community, inspires us all to think about how we can help!

“We invest in Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School because we have witnessed the transformative impact of Sacred Heart education upon our own children. We are committed because we believe in the power of a gift to inspire an entire community. Love is at the center of everything Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill does, and we aspire to further the work of the dedicated donors who have gone before us. We asked what we could do to help, and this was the answer. We hope others will do the same.”

This is a powerful moment in our School’s history. Join with Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School as we continue on the path of excellence and provide for every student here the life-changing gift of a Sacred Heart education. Help us build on this momentum and excitement by participating in the Honoring our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative!

lives of children throughout the years, those who are making a difference today, and those of future generations.

The Honoring Our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative supports a long-term vision that includes the Fund for Excellence, the Student Life Center and Theater Project and campus facility enhancements, and the Sister Mary Gray McNally Alumnae Endowed Scholarship Fund. The $7.5 million Initiative, the largest launched since 2004 by the School, began in July 2017, and continues to realize significant success. We would not be where we are today without our Initiative Co-Chairs, Steve and Joann Rull, Bill and DeAnn Gueck, and Sr. Ann Caire Rosary ’48 and Sr. Nancy Ghio CH ‘42.

Gifts and/or pledges received for the 2018-2019 school year as of June 30, 2019 total $1,755,150.

The 2019-2020 School Year has been a momentous year for the Honoring our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative! I am thrilled to share great news about the significant gifts that Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill has received, including the $3 million gift to fund the Student Life Center Project, the largest gift in the 90-year history of the school. Thank you to all those who propel the School forward through your commitment and generosity.

The Cornelsen Challenge

Endowed English and Mathematics Departments

In September 2019, Head of School Michael F. Baber and Board Chair J. Spencer Finney shared with our community that Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School received a lead-gift commitment of $1 million to the School’s Honoring Our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative through the Cornelsen Challenge. “Through our twelve-year association with the School, we’ve never been so impressed with nor had as much faith in the leadership team in place, guided by Michael Baber. We are thrilled to give back and help propel the gift of a Sacred Heart education into the forefront of conversations,” said the donor, a parent of children who graduated from Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School.

“We’ve watched firsthand as our children have grown and developed into strong academics, leaders, and most importantly, conscientious members of their communities. We believe so strongly in the Sacred Heart mission to educate the whole child. At the core of everything academic is a strong foundation in English and math. We want to endow these departments to continue their legacy of excellence for generations to come.”

“This gift is right in line with our hopes for the Initiative—that families will leave behind their legacy and propel the School forward. This gift is an inspiration to all to give their best gift—their biggest gift ever to our School, because it has the power to change the world,” said Baber.

WHY I GIVE

This $1 million lead-gift commitment has been given to challenge the community to join the Honoring Our Legacy Major Gifts Initiative and to help endow the English and Mathematics Departments as part of the School’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence. Gifts received in response to the Challenge will go to this portion of the Initiative. “The Board of Trustees is grateful to this generous family for their commitment to the future of Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School. We look forward to more families joining this Challenge,” said Finney.

Please join the Challenge, inspired by this generous gift. Thank you for joining together with us to strengthen our School for years to come!

I choose to be a part of the journey at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School by giving time and supporting Annual Giving because doing so has a positive impact on my children and all of the students in the school. One of the goals of Sacred Heart education is to serve others, and this aligns with my personal values. Sacred Heart education focuses on the whole child with an emphasis on who they are and their relationship with God. Students receiving a Sacred Heart education are taught how to be civic leaders, think critically, to have a positive impact on the communities they serve, and most importantly to reflect and learn from experiences of service. If anyone is unsure about supporting Annual Giving, please know that whatever the amount, the impact of your gift goes beyond today. It cultivates leaders for tomorrow.

Nurturing Scientists

Encouraging Villa Duchesne students to think about careers in STEM

Science education and opportunities for women in science continue to advance at a rapid pace. Today, the learning space, resources, and faculty members with whom our students interact put Villa Duchesne at the forefront of STEM education, preparing our graduates to pursue advanced study in the sciences.

Starting in seventh grade, Villa shows our students what they are capable of. In 2018, Performing Arts Department faculty member Mr. Steve Neale built our middle school Robotics program from the ground up with the support of Villa’s principal, Ms. Bridget Collins. While our middle school students are learning life science and physical science, they are also getting exposure to engineering concepts, coding, and technology through their Robotics class.

“My goal is for the students to imagine themselves in a career in engineering,” says Mr. Neale. “They will leave my class with the experience of doing something that seems difficult by breaking it down

into manageable parts to problem-solve in stages. There are so many skills involved in engineering, and I want my students to see the variety of ways in which they can excel.”

Villa’s high school science offerings include three Advanced Placement courses and Engineering, Anatomy & Physiology, and Forensic Science electives. As our students progress into high school coursework, their needs evolve, and so has Villa’s physical space for science education. In August of 2019, we dedicated our renovated science space, the Rull Family Innovation Center (see photos on p. 41), and our students and faculty are seeing the advantages of having a state-of-the-art space.

“The Rull Center is rich in technology and versatile, allowing us to transition from the design and planning space to the lab space seamlessly,” says Dr. Kristin Erickson, Villa’s Engineering and Physics teacher. Students have access to cutting edge technology and software, multiple 3D printers, and a laser engraver.

Are you an alumnae of Villa Duchesne studying or working in STEM? Reach out to us at news@vdoh.org and tell us what inspired you!

Technology at our students’ fingertips. New and functional learning spaces. Gifted and motivated faculty members. Small class sizes. All these things are key to our success. Villa’s Science Department provides our students with a strong foundation. Our students, nurtured by our faculty, know that they can be successful in STEM. “In both Anatomy and Forensic Science, I am constantly suggesting career opportunities and connecting science with the interests of my students,” says Ms. Elizabeth Blanton ‘94, who teaches Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Forensic Science.

“There are so many ways we encourage our students to consider careers in STEM,” says Ms. Didi Noelker, Chair of the Science Department. “We purposefully recognize the accomplishments of women in the field during class and seek out exposure to career paths. Our students know that women are critical to advances in science that make our world a better place. They know that we believe in them, and they see it is possible.”

Oak Hill on the Rise

has been educating boys and girls in the Sacred Heart tradition since 1929. Throughout our 90-year history, we have been a school where every child is known and loved. In 2019, Oak Hill is a thriving and busy community of boys and girls age 3 through 6th grade. Our outstanding faculty come to school each day with mission in their hearts, ready to engage our students and prepare them for deeply meaningful lives.

This year, Oak Hill saw a 13% growth in enrollment and a 22% increase in the number of new families. Our Family Individualized Tuition initiative (read more on p. 26) is bringing more families in to tour campus. Our Acorn Club provides free before and after care from 7:00 am – 6:00 pm each day. I invite you to visit to see if Oak Hill might be the place for your child to call home.

Great teaching and learning are built on a combination of passionate educators, an engaged community, and exceptional resources, materials, and opportunities. Take a look at just some of the incredible things happening at Oak Hill:

> We continue to focus on our math curriculum so that Oak Hill students remain on the cutting edge. We are in our third year of using the Singapore Math approach though the Math in Focus program for grades 1-5. We want to nurture the deep mathematical and critical-thinking skills of our students and prepare them to be successful at the next level.

> We have aligned our science curriculum with the Next Generation Science Standards, which call for a “threedimensional approach” to science instruction.

To engage this type of learning, we adopted a new, up-to-date program called STEMscopes. We have provided professional development for our teachers to ensure our excellence in this curricular area, and our classroom faculty is working with our science specialist, Makerspace instructor, and a technology consultant to “supercharge” our science instruction.

> We began engaging our Early Childhood students in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, a program that blends religious instruction with an approach that recognizes the innate wonder and curiosity of young children. It is designed to foster a profoundly personal and joyful experience of faith that is unique to each child’s relationship with God.

> Global Education is not new at Oak Hill, but we are aligning our studies with the UN’s call for “climate action for peace.” This year, our Peace Day prayer service centered on this theme, and we are exploring the theme in science projects and learning. We continue to deepen our studies of different regions across the globe by celebrating cultures through our International Festival and using the Lenke Global Education Center to Skype with friends across the world.

> We are in the process of reviewing and adapting our social studies instructional program in light of the latest standards for learning from the National Council for the Social Studies.

DR. PETER M. SCHROEDER PRINCIPAL, OAK HILL

> Outdoor Education opportunities for our children to be outside on our beautiful, 60-acre campus continue to grow. Some of the highlights include joining the Missouri StreamTeam, monitoring and testing the water in Deer Creek, taking care of our chickens, and learning in our outdoor classroom. Watch for news about the Green Schools Quest, a project-based challenge through the U.S. Green Building Council!

WHY I GIVE

> Our commitment to best practices for effective teaching is reflected in our robust faculty development budget and our partnership with the Gurian Institute on how boys and girls learn best.

We desire that children move forward from Oak Hill as poised, confident, and courageous individuals, attuned to the love of God, and ready to excel in their future schools. We are deeply proud of our students and trust that a portion of St. Madeleine Sophie’s vision of transforming the world with God’s love will be attained through them.

JOHN POWELL – Theology Teacher | 19 years at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School

Inspired by Mr. Marty Rubio, a past social studies teacher, and other teachers who created a scholarship to help fund student needs that are often forgotten, I started to give to the scholarship fund. To me, Goal Three demands that we all give something back to the school in order to help our students financially, even if that contribution is small. It is an expression of solidarity with our students who are not going to be able to come to our school without a community welcoming them and helping them succeed in all ways. What would St. Rose Philippine Duchesne do?

Alum Corner

Educating Hearts

RACHEL DRONE GEHM ‘88

How long has it been since you were on campus? I know for some, the answer will be “earlier today,” while others may not have been back to “the castle” since graduation. Wherever your answer falls on this spectrum, please know that all of our alumni are welcome back home and we want to see you and your family! One of the great things about Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill is that while you may leave 801 S. Spoede Rd. and embark on future careers, further studies, and all the other journeys of a long, interesting life, this place never leaves you. You are – and always will be – a child of the Sacred Heart. Memories vary from decade to decade, but whether you recall your favorite congé, donning a pair of

brogues, or putting together a Christmas Basket, those years are precious. Whether it is these familiar traditions, or the new, innovative additions to campus, you will fall in love all over again.

Our alumni community is rich with the wisdom and worldliness given to us by St. Madeleine Sophie and St. Philippine Duchesne. Whether in a desk at City House or the arcade at Barat Hall from decades ago, or from today’s Innovation Center and Nature Trail at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill, we still get our purpose and our mission from these pioneering women. Providing an exemplary education and educating the whole child was and still is paramount in what we do. Come and experience it for yourself! Your alma mater will make you proud. It makes me proud every day.

Our time is spent mingling and reminiscing with fellow alumni over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. In the 2018-2019 school year, we visited New York City, Connecticut, Atlanta, and Denver. We will be visiting Houston, Dallas and Kansas City early 2020 and would love to see you if you live in those areas!

Memory Lane

Science instruction has come a long way at Villa Duchesne!

When our 1929 building was constructed, science courses and labs were held in small classrooms.

In the early 1990s, the science wing was built giving students true labs and classroom spaces.

In 2019, we dedicated the Rull Family Innovation Center. The Center has three components: the Lab, the Workshop, and the Think Tank. The Lab is a technologically rich, collaborative classroom with mobile white boards, touch screen technology, and advanced computer software for engineering, coding, and design. In The Workshop, students will use 3D printers, power tools, and laser cutters.

The Think Tank is designed for flexibility to allow testing or quiet work, group projects, and meetings. Our students can be found learning and creating in the Innovation Center every day!

A glimpse of the past –Science Wing under construction and classrooms in the ‘90s.

Current science faculty member Elizabeth Blanton was a student when the Science Wing was completed in 1993!
