Oak Hill Class of 2017
OAK HILL SIXTH GRADE COMPLETION
Your Sacred Heart education is a way of life which calls you to change and, like Jesus, grow in “wisdom, age, and grace.” Wherever you go, whatever road you may travel, you will always find a home at the Sacred Heart. Your relationships will endure and transcend all confines of time and space because they are founded on faith, hope, and love. – LIFE AT THE SACRED HEART, 1985
On The Cover
From the time they come to us, our students embark upon a Sacred Heart journey—whether as a junior kindergartener exploring in the classroom; a middle schooler climbing new academic heights; or a high schooler gazing at the college horizon. The new look for our magazine, website, and viewbook reflects the pioneering spirit that brought St. Rose Philippine Duchesne to North America in 1818. Today, Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School is one of 147 Sacred Heart schools established in 30 countries across the globe.

Editor: Sapna Jos, Director of Marketing and Communications

Dear Sacred Heart FamilY
Our education changes lives. What a wonderful gift that is for us who hold the mission in trust, those who received it, and the world into which we graduate them. When one receives a gift, the only fitting response is “Thank you.” All around the world, the Sacred Heart family is celebrating the 200th anniversary of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne’s bold move to cross new frontiers. We take our lead from her, and we thank her, and we imitate her. What will we boldly do to honor our namesake? The State of the School in October 2017 served as the perfect opportunity to give an update on that challenging question.
We cannot do it without you—your generosity of prayer and philanthropy—two pillars of strength for us. As we stated, when one receives a gift, the only fitting response is “Thank you.” It is fitting then that in this joint publication of Heart to Heart and our Annual Report that we clearly express our gratitude to you for all your support.
We love our Annual Giving theme: Cor Unum: Everyone. Every Year. For Every Student.
The State of the School was a night where we as a community came together around something that we all hold dear and love very much: the education of children. Designed with you in mind in the hopes that what we shared will increase your love and loyalty to this wonderful Sacred Heart community. Seven key areas give a board overview of the energy and direction of our school: Strategic Plan, Independent Schools Association of the Central States (ISACS) Update, Sacred Heart Commission on Goals (SHCOG) Update, Board of Trustees’ Goals, Enrollment, Finance, and Honoring our Legacy initiative.
While this was a wonderful event, we want you to know that this type of honest and transparent communication has been a hallmark of our time here—now in our second year at the helm! We will continue to share with you all the good that we do, all the challenges we face, and all the successes for which we thank God!
ISACS and SHCOG both challenge us to be the best we can be—their views are not optional but instructive on how we should live our life here. For example:
• A comprehensive review of the Oak Hill curriculum gave birth to a new math program.
• Spanish joined French and Latin as part of the language offerings at Oak Hill.
• A new principal joined Villa Duchesne—Bridget Collins has the academic credentials as well as the instincts as one who grew up in a Sacred Heart home and educated in a Sacred Heart school.
• Morning assembly returned to Villa Duchesne to build community and offer student more leadership opportunities.
• Social Studies Department Chair Marty Rubio serves as Dean of Curriculum to ensure our curriculum builds from subject to subject and from year to year.
• Middle School students have grade-level deans to serve as academic guides.
• Villa Duchesne Service Learning has been re-envisioned to support reflection and student-centered learning.
Cor Unum! We are only as strong as we are united. This was a non-negotiable for St. Madeleine Sophie Barat and it is for us. This is a charge that we take to heart—so, it has been a joy to welcome so many to the Baber’s family farm—from fishing with dads and grandfathers to student field trips to dinner for the field hockey team.
We are blessed by your confidence and support. Thank you for being our partners in mission. Your collaboration with us echoes the wisdom of Pope Francis who in his April 2017 message reminded all that the only future worth building includes everyone. With you, we are building that future.
On the eve of the Bicentennial of St. Philippine Duchesne’s departure in 1818 from France on her journey of a lifetime, the beginning of the international Society of the Sacred Heart, and the first stirrings of the Society’s educational mission in this part of the world, we welcome the chance to provide updates— where we are headed as we move forward together, all of us, as the family of the Sacred Heart—to reach new frontiers we must “set sail.” We have an awesome responsibility.
By design, our education is meant to be a journey, not a destination. Our school community—students, parents, alums, trustees, faculty, staff, and friends—have all honored our mission on this campus for 88 years. Here is to a vibrant future crossing whatever frontiers come our way!
Gratefully,

ALUMNAE/I PARTICIPATION
We recognize our alumnae/i donors by their class year. Barat Hall and City House closed in 1968, so the years reflected refer to the students’ high school graduation year. Participation percentages are reflective of living alumnae/i for whom we have current contact information. Associated alumnae/i are those who attended another Sacred Heart Network School and have joined the Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill community. We welcome all Sacred Heart alumnae/i and are grateful for their continued leadership and support of our students and our School.

Honoring Our LegacY
Gifts in gratitude to the Religious who served at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill

DEBORAH O. SCHLATTMAN DIRECTOR OF ADVANCEMENT

Founded in 1929, we have been at the forefront of educational excellence. We are committed to our mission of empowering young men and women to be a force for good in our world.
Formed by our Catholic faith, Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School is our home, one that educates each child with love, respect, and care.
To ensure that Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School is sustainable for years to come, we are embarking upon the Honoring Our Legacy initiative with Honorary Co-Chairs Nancy Ghio, RSCJ and Ann Caire, RSCJ and Parent Co-Chairs Dr. William J. and Mrs. DeAnn Gueck. The initiative calls us to:
> Grow endowment to sustain cutting-edge academics, arts, technology, and athletics
> Support excellence through management of financial, personnel, and capital resources
WHY I GIVE

> Seek to earn transformative gifts by broadening philanthropic initiatives
> Encourage environmental sustainability across our campus and within the community

A thriving endowment is one of the most important gifts that we can give our students and their families. While our endowment is healthy, it must continue to grow to support the needs of today, as well as the opportunities of the future. What will your legacy be? Please join us today, as your support ensures that the gift of our Sacred Heart education continues for generations to come.
Gratefully,

Elizabeth Blanton ’94 has served in Villa Duchesne’s Science Department since 1999.
As an Oak Hill and Villa Duchesne alumna, it has been my privilege to teach at my alma mater for almost twenty years. During my almost forty years of living and practicing Sacred Heart education, many things have changed, but the core values that make our school amazing have not. My classmates and my students go beyond cultural expectations, just as they did in the time of St. Rose Philippine and St. Madeleine Sophie.
When asked why going here matters, most will say community. We all know and care about each other and work together for the success of our students. This community extends far beyond Saint Louis; our school is part of an international family that welcomes us around the world. The students who graduate

from Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School go out into the world and do great things.

So many alumni send their children back here. They recognize the empowering environment of our school and how the Goals and Criteria provide a framework to guide our lives. The students at this school make this world a better place. Not only do I support our mission in my classroom, I also feel as an alumna that it is my calling to philanthropically support that mission, too. Donating each year ensures the school can reach as many students as possible and that each student’s gifts are recognized and celebrated.
Alum Corner
Bridging the Years

RACHEL DRONE GEHM ‘88 MANAGER OF ALUMNAE/I RELATIONS

I led a campus tour this past year for a variety of people from a variety of decades. Using photos from over the years, I shared the history of the school and the changes it has undergone since construction started in 1927. Many were surprised to learn that today’s auditorium used to be the gymnasium before Kenefick Gym was built in 1961. Others did not know the Chapel was built almost 30 years after the school opened its doors. Before the Oak Hill campus was constructed, the primary grades were learning their ABCs in today’s art wing. After the tour, it occurred to me that while the physical plant has undergone many changes, the heart of the school, our Sacred Heart education, has remained constant.
Our alumni remain the bridge that links the early years of the school to the current experiences of our students. There are many opportunities for innovation to keep our school competitive and offering a high quality education. Just last year, the small classroom that was home to my Spanish classes in the late 1980’s is now a state-of-the-art media studio. I spent many afternoons doing homework in the Reference Room; it is now the Global Education Center, equipped to connect our students with their counterparts around the world.
These campus improvements make me wonder what the tour I gave will look like in another 88 years. Please join us as we continue the sacred journey started when St. Rose Philippine Duchesne left France aboard The Rebecca 200 years ago. We need you to help us stay the course, providing a Sacred Heart education at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School for boys and girls age 3 through grade 6 and young women grades 7 through 12.

TRÈS BIEN AWARD

Memory Lane
It was originally a parlor designed to receive the family and friends of boarders and RSCJ.
As the boarding school prepared to close in 1970, the space became a reference room for students to quietly research and study.

Today, we call this space the Global Education Center or GEC. Equipped with large monitors, video cameras, and microphones, students are able to connect online with Sacred Heart classmates around the world.
