OAK HILL CLASS OF 2016

Your Sacred Heart education is a way of life which calls you to change and, like Jesus, grow in “wisdom, age, and grace.” Wherever you go, whatever road you may travel, you will always find a home at the Sacred Heart. Your relationships will endure and transcend all confines of time and space because they are founded on faith, hope, and love.

– LIFEATTHESACREDHEART, 1985

Oak Hill introduced an early childhood violin program in the 2015-16 school year for its 3- and 4-year-old students. The Junior Kindergarten 3 and Junior Kindergarten 4 students progressed from learning how to properly hold the violin and bow to playing simple rhythms on the instrument. JK3 students concluded the school year by performing a violin concert for their mothers and grandmothers at their May Ceremony.

LEFT:Salutatorian Ava Sansone, Valedictorian Nina Kaiser (Missouri Scholars 100 Honorable Mention), and Salutatorian Emi Berni (National Merit Commended Student) spoke at Villa Duchesne’s 87th Commencement Ceremony.

“Villa’s effect on me and my classmates will stay constant. Along with the basic math, literature, history, and science classes, Villa has taught us invaluable lessons in perseverance and leadership.”

gifts of hope

Michael F. Baber joined us July 1 as Head of School. Previously, he served as interim Head of School at Schools of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana, and Assistant Head of School at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Connecticut. A well-respected leader in our Networkof Sacred Heart Schools, Michael has spent his life dedicated to Catholic education.

The question of how to educate a child is one of the most important a parent can ask. St. Madeleine Sophie offers a response when she says, “Our mission is great, it involves the whole world.” At Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School, we are about changing the world to be as God intended. This has an expectation of excellence and a commitment to be hopeful — one must be hopeful if one is to change the world — we have to believe in things we have not yet seen!

As Head of School, I want to set the bar high.

My world view, my passion, is in line with what Sacred Heart education calls us to: a love for learning and a palpable passion for justice which can be seen and experienced. Education in a Sacred Heart school is intended for the success of the student. What that means pragmatically is whatI believe in and Sacred Heart education is built upon:

strategic priorities

The Board of Trustees, in partnership with the Leadership Team, has identified the strategic priorities for Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School in the 2016-2017 school year and beyond.

the fundamental belief that each student is capable of success and that when faithful to the process of risk taking, discovery, and learning, one is led to freedom upon freedom, success upon success, and ultimately a genuine, deep, and lasting happiness.

My vision of education, of a school community, is one that enables us to be both hopeful and joyful. This quest to learn which involves understanding ourselves, others, and the world is arduous, while at the same time gratifying for both student and teacher alike. The fruit of this gratification is joyful optimism in a world that is craving such light.

St. Madeleine Sophie’s gift to the Church and to us is that our school communities are built upon the foundational belief that our schools are transformational in nature and what makes us unique is not just a philosophy of education, but a philosophy of life. The certainty to see education as liberating; and that one is educated not for oneself but for the other, to make a difference in the world.

• Academic program excellence

• Clearly defined and articulated identity

• Bold, visionary leadership

• Exemplary community

• Constant emphasis on long-term sustainability

My view of Sacred Heart graduates is one that we send out into the world as gifts: gifts of hope with a clear sense of their moral compass, their civic duty, and with an indefatigable sense that “we can do this” because they are steeped in the intellectual life, they know their telos or end, they have found their voice. This is our daily work. Some might believe this is impossible, but I remind you of the words from Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass

Alice laughed. “There’s no use trying,” she said. “One can’t believe impossible things.”

“I daresay you haven’t had much practice,” said the Queen. “When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

I love my vocation, and our legacy of success makesme proud to be engaged in the service of Sacred Heart education. Thank you for all that you do to support us, helping us advance this great mission, for entrusting your children to us. My door is alwaysopen to you.

Kary Bannister Spiegel ’02 is Principal for KRB Creative as a marketing and communications consultant.

M y decision to be a faithful donor to Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School actually began with my dad — he started contributing in my name after my graduation in 2002. Today, the giving tradition continues, because I feel so blessed for all of the amazing memories and friendships developed during my 14 years at VDOH. Beyond the incredible education I received, my life has been enriched through the celebration of Sacred Heart traditions — from Congé and Goûter to May Crowning and Christmas Baskets. I had many great influences at Villa, and I am so appreciative for all of the life lessons that I’ll never forget. But the lesson for which I’m probably most grateful, is the importance of serving others, which I learned through Service Learning at Villa. Especially now, as the mother of a two-year-old with another baby on the way, I feel a heightened awareness of other’s needs and a strong sense of compassion to do what I can, when I can, to give back to this community why i give

building community

During the fall sports season, Meghan Donovan ’16 helped lead Villa Duchesne’s volleyball team to win the MSHSAA Class 3 state championship. In addition to her team’s accolades, Meghan set the state’s all-time career assists record and was named Gatorade Missouri Volleyball Player of the Year. The 6'2'' setter will continue her studies as a NCAA Division I student-athlete at the University of Georgia.

When I think of Villa Duchesne volleyball, I automatically think of Goal IV of the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria: Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to the building of community as a Christian value. It is a special ideal that I hold in my heart every time I walk on the court.

This goal is carried out daily by the coaching staff and adhered to by the players. The coaching staff makes sure that every member of our volleyball community is included in every activity. This may be having a senior drive all the freshmen to games or integrating every team–freshmen, JV, and varsity–in all tryout drills. We also participate in many teambonding and team-building activities throughout the year. These events, though small, help build closeness and trust within a special community.

From my very first day at Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School, I felt the strength of the volleyball community. Being the only freshman on thevarsity team, I knew no one at the beginning of the season. I was scared, but not for long. At our first practice, a senior came up to me and introduced me to everyone, really helping me

break out of my shell. The seniors were all so kind and welcoming!

This compelled me to do the same over the next three years. By the time I was a senior, the leadership and work ethic I learned from the volleyball program helped us become close teammates and ultimately win a state championship title.

I know that without this bond and sense of community, the outcome of our season would have been unlikely. The success was a result of our drive, focus, heart, community, and many other attributes. I could not have learned these great skills without my teammates, coaches, and teachers at Villa Duchesne. These small, but important, pieces all add up to what makes Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School so very special.

college signing

Seven Villa Duchesne seniors signed to continue their sports at the college level, meaning that more than 10 percent of the Class of 2016 will compete in collegiate athletics in the fall: Allie Christopher (Bucknell field hockey), Meghan Donovan (Georgia volleyball), Isabella Leeker (Louisville field hockey) Lauren Wacker (Truman State volleyball), Hannah Deines (West Point cross country), Alicia Moellering (Oklahoma track and field), and Kacie Frost (Murray State soccer).

hoop dreams

Oak Hill’s sixth grade boys basketball team had to overcome obstacles–including beating an undefeated team from a higher division–to win St. Margaret of Scotland’s Tournament of Dragons this school year. This season, the team has learned firsthand about even greater obstacles–and the important role teamwork plays in overcoming serious challenges.

In May 2015, Oak Hill sixth grader Reuben Goldschmidt experienced a life-threatening rupture in his brain and was hospitalized for most of summer vacation. He returned to school in the fall, but returning to the Saints’ basketball roster was not possible at that

stage in the recovery process. Wanting to stay involved, Reuben and his father, David, stepped in to help when a spot opened on the team’s coaching staff.

During games, Reuben played an active role from the bench, encouraging teammates who have rallied around him. As the boys complete their education at Oak Hill, Reuben continues toward what is projected to be a complete recovery.

engineering dreams

At the start of this school year I had the opportunity and challenge of introducing a new course to the Villa Duchesne Science curriculum; Introduction to Engineering. Women are underrepresented in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. One of the big questions in STEM fields is why does the gender gap exist and how can we close it? This course is part of our effort at Villa Duchesne to introduce students to engineering and open up new opportunities for our girls, helpingto close this gender gap. This new engineering course introduces girls to engineering design concepts that integrate technology, science, and math through projects and design challenges. Many students enter my course with only the vaguest ideas of what an engineer does and few picture themselves in an engineering role. This course is helping to change that.

One of the things that I learned during my first two semesters teaching engineering was how poorly we, as a society, sell engineering to girls. A good general definition of engineering is using math and science to solve problems, but what we fail to emphasize is that by solving problems we are helping people and not just people in general, but the people in our lives. When engineering is cast in this light, I think it more fully engages the interests of girlsand integrates the Goals and Criteria.

One of the major projects that my engineering students engage in is using our 3D printer (awarded through the Rull Family Faculty Innovation Fund) to print and assemble a prosthetic hand. We partnered with e-NABLE, a group of volunteers worldwide who use their 3D printers to print prosthetic hands at no cost for people in need. e-NABLE pairs volunteers who have 3D printers with people in need of hands, providing the designs for the hands and community support for all involved. This project is the perfect marriage of engineering and Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria II and III: educating to a deep respect for intellectual values and a social awareness which impels action. It was easy to see the dedication the students had to this project; Maggie Stephen, one of my first semester students, continued to come in during free periods to work on the hands even after the course had ended. At this point we have printed and fully assembled five hands, some to be submitted to the e-NABLE group for quality control, the first step in being matched with a hand recipient, and the rest to be used as class examples.

Engineering is a project-based course that provides students practice in solving problems, budgeting, risk taking, helping others, and learning tenacity. I feel that this course embodies many of the qualities we, as Sacred Heart educators, hope to ingrain in our students and brings the Goals and Criteria to life in a unique manner. Teaching this course has been an exciting experience, and I look forward to growing this coursein the future.

“Before I took the class, I was on the edge regarding whether or not I wanted to go into engineering in college and as a career, but after the class I felt much more confident that it was what I really wanted to do. It was a really good experience in terms of learning about what engineering entails and discoveringhow I can see myself doing this in my future.” ~ MAGGIESTEPHEN ’17,

paying it forward

As Manager of Alumnae/i Relations, I have had the opportunity to hear alumni from different decades share their stories about the positive impact of their Sacred Heart education. I have enjoyed meeting alumni at Reunion Weekend, Women in Business networking events, and connector events from New York City to Southern California. My position also allows me to keep our alumni community engaged in supporting the school philanthropically.

When I attended Villa Duchesne and Oak Hill School in the 1970s and 80s, I was supported by the grace and generosity of the alumni who came before me. We need to foster that spirit of giving in our alumni today. Please visit campus, reminisce with classmates, and make those memories a reality for our current students.

This statue of Mater came to Villa Duchesne when City House closed in 1968. Over the years, the statue had suffered damage which led to amateur attempts at restoration. City House alumna Jacque Thaman Niekamp ’62agreed in 2014 to underwrite a professional restoration of the statue.

Gloria Hamlin of Hamlin Restoration in St. Louis worked for 18 months to restore Mater. She revealed beautiful gold leaf as well as damaged corners inexpertly filled with wax. The end result is beautiful and led Gloria to say, “I can’t remember a more gratifying or rewarding restoration in almost 25 years as a restorer.” The City House Mater has a place of honor in the 1929 Main Building.
