Letter from the Editor THE TRANSITION TO COLLEGE IS NOT EASY. It’s especially difficult during a global pandemic.

Within the past year, we’ve faced unmeasurable tests of tenacity and perseverance against adversity.

Those elements were tested even so as a college student — especially as we took classes at home and saw limited interaction with classmates on Zoom screens. We’ve missed meaningful connections with family, friends and colleagues.

Even production from our media organizations looked different — we experienced late nights working in our own apartments instead of the shared creative spaces in the newspaper production rooms.

This upcoming school year, however, looks a little brighter.

I’m writing this letter to you from the Student Media Center, a pale yellow colored building located on Broad Street. It’s home to VCU’s student media organizations, including The Commonwealth Times, WVCW Radio and Ink Magazine — and it’s where we worked on this year’s issue of The Compass.

The Compass is the SMC’s annual summer publication, which serves as a guide to life at VCU. Created entirely by students, we’ve come together this summer to assemble the most comprehensive and up-to-date information about being a student at VCU.

We hope that with this guide, we can help ease some of the uncertainties that come along with entering college, especially during a pandemic. In this issue, you’ll find stories on picking your roommates, the best spots to eat around campus as well as information on our student organizations on campus.

You’ll also find important resources such as the university’s COVID-19 protocols and numbers to call in case of an emergency.

We’re here to help navigate issues through personal advice such as switching your major and how to stay safe on campus. Our contributors for this issue include a wide range of majors, backgrounds and interests, to give you the best advice possible.

I simply can’t wait to welcome you to our little building to meet all of our organizations when the time comes. But until then, we’ve put together this guide — just for you.

During a time like no other, taking advantage of the resources and opportunities that come with being in college is important now, more than ever. Join that club you’re curious about, connect with your classmates and take your time exploring around this great city.

ARRIVING TO CAMPUS DURING THE PANDEMIC? Here’s what to expect

ITH THE STEADY INCREASE OF COVID-19 vaccines administered and the decrease of cases, things are slowly starting to go back to normal, including life at VCU. However, for some students, especially those who will be living on campus for the first time this fall, it may feel overwhelming.

Although safety protocols on campus are being eased, it’s still beneficial to be aware of how to follow the university’s updated rules while still enjoying time on campus.

COVID-19 VACCINES ARE MANDATORY; STUDENTS TAKING FALL CLASSES MUST REPORT VACCINE STATUS In June, VCU released a mass statement to all students about how anyone attending classes on campus in the fall must submit their updated vaccine record. The university provided students with a link to its University Student Health Services website which includes video guides on how to submit vaccine and immunization information.

Students must have submitted this information no later than July 15.

However, students may be exempt from the COVID-19 vaccine requirement for religious or health reasons and must submit a COVID19 Vaccination Exemption Request Form.

COVID-19 ON-CAMPUS SAFETY MEASURES LIFTED

ADDITIONAL SAFETY MEASURES

Early last month, VCU announced that many of the previous health and safety measures that were implemented during the past academic school year would be lifted in accordance with Gov. Northam’s Executive Order 79.

Although most safety and health measures have been lifted, VCU is still taking precautions to ensure students and faculty remain safe on campus. Contact tracing, increased cleaning and surveillance testing will be maintained throughout the fall semester. Also, masks, hand sanitizer and various cleaning supplies will be available in both common areas and vending machines throughout campus.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE NEW CHANGES: • Physical distancing will no longer be required for those who are vaccinated, although those who are unvaccinated must still follow CDC safety guidelines of social distancing and wearing a mask. This is applicable for all gatherings on campus.

• Masks are no longer required for students who are vaccinated but are still required for unvaccinated students. It will still be required in all common areas of VCU residences, health care environments and whenever arrangements for immunocompromised people are necessary.

FALL 2021 CLASSES The class schedule for the fall is online with registration opened on April 26. Although VCU will accommodate students’ desire for a variety of course modalities — such as in-person, hybrid, virtual — the fall will have a larger number of in-person classes.

Many of the courses offered to students in the fall will be technology-assisted through Canvas in order to account for all students’ course modalities.

It’s important to remember that this fall will be an adjustment for all students and faculty. It’s crucial to continue to be safe both on and off campus and to follow all of VCU’s updated safety protocols while on campus in order to protect yourself and others around you.

FIGHT THE FALL SEMESTER SCARIES: Advice on the return to on-campus life

HALDEN FRALEY Pwatem Beginning your college career as a freshman can be nerve-wracking as is, but with life on VCU’s campus returning to normal during a global pandemic and a year of online learning, you aren’t the only ones facing a potentially unfamiliar situation. Many rising sophomores who have never been on campus — and even some upperclassmen — may not know what to expect when returning to the campus this fall.

Here are a few helpful tips that will hopefully help you adjust to the upcoming semester:

One of the benefits of Zoom lectures is the ability to record them and watch them later.

In-person classes won’t have that luxury. Be present in the moment, and write down deadlines and important notes to refer to later.

BE KIND TO YOURSELF

You may feel the pressure of grades, career goals and responsibilities getting to you.

Remember to keep a positive perspective!

You’re pursuing your education during an incredibly stressful time for the entire world.

Do not be hard on yourself, and remember to take stock of your accomplishments.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BEING IN PERSON AGAIN

Maybe you are taking college classes for the first time, or maybe you only have experience taking online classes in your home.

Either way, with many classes moving to an in-person model this semester, take advantage of the fact that classes are in person again. Making connections with instructors and classmates is one of the best ways to maximize your college experience.

WRITE THINGS DOWN

PLAN YOUR ROUTE

While you might miss waking up and immediately logging in to classes, walking through campus will take time that you might not expect. Try locating your classes before the semester begins and do a trial run, allowing you to find the classes and know how long your commute will take, without the pressure of being late or navigating crowded sidewalks.

There are several diverse student clubs and organizations on campus that are opening back up and looking for people to join. This is a great time to branch out, and find things outside of your classes to take part in. The Student Media Center in particular offers opportunities to express yourself through journalism, art, poetry and more.

One of the most exciting things about the new semester is the fact that we will be connected again. You might feel anxious at first, but be open-minded and reach out. You may find that others are also looking to make friends, despite their own anxiety.

USE CAMPUS RESOURCES

After an incredibly isolated school year, it’s worth remembering that there are many resources here on campus for you, such as The Well and the Writing Center. There are also plenty of tutors, professors, advisors and other on-campus services that are still here and ready to help you when you need it.

DON’T STAY IN YOUR DORM

While living on your own, in your own space, can definitely be freeing after the past year, don’t forget to go out and explore the city of Richmond. There are restaurants, libraries and other social hot spots that are opening up too, which shows that there is more to Richmond than VCU’s campus.

YOU’RE WITH PEOPLE, MAKE FRIENDS!

FIND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

BE FLEXIBLE AND UNDERSTANDING

It’s perfectly understandable to be anxious.

Know that others feel the same way too.

Patience and understanding will go a long way toward helping everyone feel comfortable and safe. Be empathetic as everyone adjusts.

HAVE FUN!

College is supposed to be a positive experience! Don’t be afraid to feel like you can have fun as you start your college career!

There may be a different structure to your college journey than you were expecting.

You only get to be here once, so remember that it’s okay to dive in and make the most of it.

OVING IN WITH SOMEONE FOR the first time can be scary territory that you might not be very familiar with, if at all. Searching for someone to share your space with can often be a challenge.

It can be beneficial for you in the long run to utilize the resources available to you in order to find someone you’ll enjoy living with during the upcoming school year.

Here are some tips for finding the right roommate in college.

RAMSCONNECT The app available for download on your phone can prove extremely useful when tr ying to connect with someone who would be a good roommate. It may seem a little ridiculous to reach out to people you don’t know to ask them to live with you or send out a mass message asking if anyone’s still looking for a roommate — but that ’s often how students find a roommate quickly.

SOCIAL MEDIA Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are just some examples where students can search for and maybe even connect with people who seem like a good match for them to live with.

On these pages, it’s also possible to see their passions and hobbies, which can be beneficial if you’re looking to find someone who shares the same interests as you.

REACH OUT TO FRIENDS Friends may be able to put you in touch with the perfect roommate. Your friends know who you are and might be able to connect you with someone who’s a match.

Regardless, it’s always worth a shot because the ideal roommate might be more connected to your friends than you’d think.

After you find a roommate you can see yourself living with for the year, it’s crucial for you to create a set of rules to ensure everyone will be mindful of each other’s space and privacy, especially if you don’t know this person well. That’s why setting boundaries and coming up with rules that all roommates agree to follow is so important for maintaining a responsible living situation.

AND CANNOT INVITE PEOPLE INTO YOUR LIVING SPACE. Regardless of the circumstances, whether they’re friends or significant others, it’s important to make sure you’re not making your roommates uncomfortable by inviting someone they might not know into where they live.

This is one of the most important aspects of living with someone else and it’s important to set these boundaries early on rather than after an uncomfortable situation has already been created.

One of my biggest regrets is not finding a job closer to campus. Working about 35 hours a week in the Short Pump area while taking classes left little time to socialize. Any spare time went to studying. You might want to look into on-campus jobs that work around your schedule. Nearby businesses are also usually understanding of your limited schedule as a college student.

As a transfer student and now graduate, the best advice I can give to students coming in is to get plugged in, do something you haven’t done before and find a balance between grinding and taking in what campus has to offer. It’s easy to be content with friends you already have from back home, but college is all about stepping out of your comfort zone. Try something new because this part of your life will end quickly, and it only happens once.

H

EY THERE! MY NAME’S HALDEN, and I’m the editor in chief of Pwatem, a student-run anthology of art and literature at VCU. Joining Pwatem has been a consistent source of structure and creativity that has been incredibly helpful, especially during the past year.

I joined Pwatem in the spring semester of my freshman year. I was actually introduced to it through the previous year’s anthology, and loved the idea of being involved with the art and writing

community here, since those were both areas I was (and still am) pursuing in my classes.

Freshman year of art school is a lot to handle at times, and having that community of people to meet with weekly provided a great opportunity to connect with other people during my first year at VCU. Unfortunately, the pandemic started right at the end of this year, after only a few months of settling into Pwatem. After a pretty uncertain summer, we picked up again in the fall with a smaller crew, and put together our anthologies for the year. Getting the work done was, admittedly, difficult. Not having access to campus, and maintaining awareness and outreach during a time when everyone

communicated digitally was a challenge I didn’t expect to face when I joined.

However, maintaining the regular meetings with the rest of the staff was one of the best things about the school year. There was a sense of shared purpose among us, especially during a fall and spring semester where I was lacking that feeling of purpose.

When the final anthology came out, it felt to me that we had really persevered and put together something really cool, and helped other creatives feel fulfilled despite the isolation of the past year.

If you are interested in joining Pwatem, or any of the other Student Media Center groups, I would say that the best part of the organization isn’t necessarily the satisfaction of seeing your work printed, or seeing your name in a book. Instead, I’d say the best part is the feeling of community, and the friends you make during the crazy process. It’s been the best part for me, at least, and I’m excited for that community to grow as we return to campus this fall.

How to grocery shop in college IMAN MEKONEN The Commonwealth Times

ROCERY SHOPPING CAN BE hard, especially if you’re on your own in college for the first time.

There are so many options, making the experience overwhelming and sometimes dreadful. Although it’s extremely easy to steer clear of the healthy foods and go straight for the junk, you need to do what’s best for your mind and body.

The school year is already tough, so your grocery shopping shouldn’t be. Here are some tips and tricks to guide you through the grocery store aisles to make sure you aren’t spending any extra time or money.

WHERE TO SHOP: Target at 5401 W. Broad St. has a great selection not just for groceries, but for anything you might need for your dorm.

The location has produce, clothes, electronics and a pharmacy. It’s the farthest of the bunch, but an easy 15-minute ride with the GRTC Pulse to the Willow Lawn bus stop.

If you’re looking to stretch your paycheck, Aldi at 927 Myers St. or Lidl at 4700 W. Broad St. are your best options.

These pared-down grocery stores don’t offer a ton of name brands, but most shoppers end up spending a fraction of what they would at other stores.

Kroger at 901 N. Lombardy St. is closer to campus at 20 minutes walking or five minutes driving. It’s the perfect option if you don’t want to travel far and need a bigger selection than what’s available at the nearby convenience stores.

It has a section for produce and a pharmacy. Just be ready for crowds, as it’s the only grocery store within a reasonable walking distance of many Richmond neighborhoods.

If you’re in need of groceries, apps such as Amazon Fresh and Gopuff deliver on campus.

I occasionally like to order from an app instead of physically going to the store because of its convenience. It also saves me time during moments in the semester when I need groceries but don’t have the time to go to the store.

WHAT TO SHOP FOR: The key to shopping for food in a college dorm, or in general as a college student on a budget, is to buy items you can use in a number of ways. For example, bananas can be a topping to cereal or oatmeal, a smoothie ingredient or a snack on their own. Other examples are eggs, potatoes, pasta, rice, fruit — such as strawberries, blueberries, grapes and apples — and protein, like chicken, fish, ground beef or black bean veggie burgers. These items can be used in a multitude of ways. A helpful tip: when buying produce, frozen veggies — like broccoli, carrots or asparagus — are more convenient than fresh produce because they last a lot longer.

If you decide to start cooking, your first shopping trip will be the most expensive because you’ll have to buy all of the necessary base items and condiments. Some items to consider are hot sauce, peanut butter, parmesan cheese, salt, pepper and olive oil. You should always have some food in your dorm or apartment,

preferably nonperishable. Some examples are ramen, applesauce, instant oatmeal packets, cereal and granola.

HOW TO USE YOUR GROCERIES: If you don’t have a meal plan, you can meal prep for the week for a healthy and affordable alternative. To do this, you will need to cook some kind of grain — pasta, rice or quinoa — pair it with a protein, like beef, chicken, fish, black beans or falafel, and vegetables, such as raw or steamed red peppers, asparagus or broccoli. Doing this at the beginning of the week saves you time when you might not be able to fit cooking into your schedule.

Staying in the loop: TWITTER ACCOUNTS YOU SHOULD FOLLOW AS A VCU STUDENT SCOTT MALONE The Commonwealth Times

EFORE TALKING ABOU T accounts to follow, don’t forget about one of the most important tools social media offers: hashtags.

For example, if you want to connect with other freshmen to room with, things to do or just to make friends, go on Twitter and search the hashtag “#VCU” or “#VCU25” for other Rams in the same graduating class. It may seem like a simple tip, but it’s quite useful and easy to forget.

HOMESICK? Here’s how to handle it

HEN FIRST STARTING college, the excitement of being on your own and not having parents to watch your every move can be freeing — at first. The late night trips to Christian’s Pizza and the all-nighters at Cabell Library are some of the first things you will experience as an independent college student.

However, no matter your home situation, the feeling of homesickness might creep up on you. Homesickness isn’t just missing where you used to live, but rather missing the comfort, stability and love that being at home offers. With 12-15 credit hours, a job and extracurriculars, you can easily lose the feeling of stability and comfort. Here are some tips to get that feeling back without having to take a trip to your parents’ house.

JOIN A STUDENT ORGANIZATION Joining a student organization can seem very anxiety inducing and unrealistic due to your busy schedule as a college student. However, many VCU student organizations don’t require you to attend every meeting, and there’s also an endless number of clubs to choose from for any

hobby or interest you might have. Student groups are a great way to build community and clear any extra free time you might have, to distract your mind from missing home.

CALL YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS Talking to your family might seem like the simplest answer to homesickness, but it honestly helps. Having a conversation with the person who makes you feel most comfortable and loved can validate your feelings and motivate you to keep going. The people you love are always a phone call away — do not be afraid to ring them up.

EXPLORE YOUR NEW HOME I know campus life can take a lot of getting used to, especially being at VCU in the middle of Richmond. Take some time to get familiar with your new surroundings. Richmond has a lot of parks, cafes, museums and other things you can explore to make yourself at home.

Establishing familiarity with where you’ll be for the next four years will make you feel like less of a stranger in this new place. Of course, a new home will never replace your friends and family from high school, but this is a new beginning.

Surrounding yourself with love and positivity will help you succeed in all aspects of your life.

BE POSITIVE

You can easily drown in the feeling of loneliness from being in a place you do not quite belong yet. Try to be optimistic, because you are capable of achieving all you need. Following these tips is a good start to establishing a sense of well-being as a freshman. It isn’t easy, but you can do it. Every day is a new day to learn and be something new.

You definitely might face homesickness at some point as a freshman. Just know it will not last forever. Also, make sure what you are feeling isn’t more than just homesickness. Counseling services are offered at VCU, and will help you with any questions or concerns you might have.

Lastly, remember you aren’t alone. Get some of your favorite food from back home, call your best friend, join the poetry club and make your place at VCU.

Men’s and women’s basketball play at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, which is just past the Barnes & Noble bookstore on West Broad Street.

In order to attend a men’s game, students must enter a lottery system on the VCU Athletics website to get a free ticket to the game in the student section. Students can visit vcuathletics.com to secure tickets and to find game information for all VCU sports.

If a student wants to guarantee themselves a ticket to each men’s basketball home game, they can purchase a Rowdy Rams membership, which allows them to get

priority in the lottery. Memberships are currently on sale and can be purchased through the VCU Athletics website.

To attend a women’s basketball game, students must bring their student ID and present it at the door, granting access to the arena. There isn’t a lottery for women’s basketball, so just show up on game day and cheer on the Rams, the defending Atlantic 10 champions.

Pepper spray is great to have as a self-defense tool; it’s also discreet enough to fit on your keychain.

Pepper spray can give you a sense of safety and peace of mind should you find yourself in a dangerous situation.

Although you should always carry pepper spray with you, be mindful of places where it may not be allowed. For instance, don’t make the mistake I did of accidentally bringing pepper spray into a concert venue, as they will take it away from you.

EING ON YOUR OWN AT college can be scary at first. A new environment means that there’s a lot to get used to. Every year, it’s good to brush up on safety information that will not only benefit you, but your community as well.

Take advantage of the various available resources to VCU students intended to ensure a safe and secure environment. Here are a few tips that will help you stay safe on campus.

BE CAUTIOUS WHEN WALKING ON CAMPUS AT NIGHT Even if you live on campus, always consider your safety and the time of day when thinking about walking on campus. Never walk alone at night. Even for the shortest trips, taking a RamSafe can be extremely helpful. Don’t try to brave it out when you’re stuck at the library late at night. If you live a little farther from campus, taking an Uber or Lyft might be a better option.

The black, gold and white buses commonly seen around campus at night are RamSafe buses. RamSafe is a transportation service for students, staff and faculty that allows you to call a ride to on-campus locations on the Monroe Park Campus and the Medical Campus. The operational hours may vary, but are generally 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. for both campuses. To schedule a ride, follow these steps: 1. Download the RamSafe app for iOS or Android, or access the RamSafe website on a computer or mobile device.

2. Enter your VCU eID and password on the VCU login screen. For first time users, you may need to enter a phone number to receive text notifications. Then, on the RamSafe screen, enter information

to request a ride. You must provide your current location, destination, number of people with you and any request for accommodations.

Once you are assigned a ride and given a bus number to look out for, you can track the location until it arrives. Be sure to look out for the right number bus when looking for your ride.

You will receive both a text notification and an in-app notification when the RamSafe has reached your location. You must scan your VCU student card upon entering the ride, so place it in an easily accessible area. The driver will wait three minutes before leaving, so be sure to plan accordingly when you first request a ride.

If your RamSafe’s wait time is unbearable and you must walk at night, ask a friend to walk with you or call a friend or family member to keep you company so you’re not completely alone. And if you’re walking home alone, stay alert with minimal distractions — avoid wearing big headphones or listening to loud music.

Switching your major is not the end of the world it’s the beginning TAGWA SHAMMET The Commonwealth Times

C

OMING TO COLLEGE HAS TO BE one of the most exciting, yet terrifying times of our lives. The concept of having to pick a singular subject to study that will inevitably lead me to the career of my life seems impossible. Sometimes, it is. Even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, finding the perfect major for you can be hard.

Have no fear, you’re not alone. When I first came to VCU, I was a preclinical laboratory sciences major. If I’m being quite honest, I don’t really even know what that major entails, but my African father wanted me to be a doctor and this was the closest thing I could find without disappointing. However, I knew deep down that my fear of blood and distaste for my introduction to biology class meant I was not going to make it in this field.

So, I switched to the business school at VCU. I liked the concept that I had two years to decide what I actually wanted to major in. You see, the VCU School of Business doesn’t allow you to declare a definitive major until you’ve passed all of the general business classes. Once that happens, you can choose from the array of different majors they have. I can’t honestly tell you why I jumped into the business school, but one intro to economics class and I was stuck searching for another major.

Now, before I tell you about my last and final major choice, which was the right one if I may add, I’d like to tell you how I got there: VCU advising. You may not believe me, but VCU advisors are truly the people who will help guide you to success during your time at the university. Their entire job is to ensure that you are graduating on time in a field that genuinely interests you.

You’re required to see your advisor at least one time a semester, but I would definitely recommend seeing them more, especially if you’re an undecided student. For undeclared

students, there are advisors specially selected who work exclusively with students who are lost on picking a major. They even hold one-credit seminar classes that can help you pick your major. This can be very helpful because they introduce a lot of different majors you might not have even known existed.

For students who come in declared, but would like a switch like me, there are also many options. You can talk to your already assigned advisor and they will either connect you with an advisor of the new major you’ve decided on or an undeclared advisor.

Changing your major really isn’t hectic at all. For most majors, all you have to do is fill out the change of major form. However, below are the listed steps according to the VCU Advising website: 1. Before changing your major, concentration or minor, contact the program’s advising office.

2. Review the requirements and prerequisites in the table below. Be aware that: Some programs have higher tuition rates and additional course fees. Credits previously earned at VCU or another university may not apply to the new program.

3. Submit the Change of Major/Concentration Form or the Change of Minor Form, and complete any additional steps required by your program. See the table below for details.

4. The program change becomes official after Records and Registration receives authorization from the academic department head. Any changes made after the add/drop period will apply to the following fall or spring semester.

And, for the final reveal: I am a double major in political science with a concentration in public policy and administration, as well as philosophy with a concentration in philosophy and law. Pretty intricate, and I can say that without the help of VCU advising, I’d still be floating around wondering what my next crazy major will be.

Trust me when I say this: changing your major is not the end of the world. It is the beginning of everything. Don’t freak out when you realize that maybe you don’t like what you’re studying. It is better to change and excel than stay in a failing position. So, when you decide it’s time for a change, make sure to utilize the resources you have.

But, college is also a scary time. It’s a new beginning. Most of us have to pack up our lives from our hometowns and move to a whole new area. New city, new state and sometimes, even a new continent. So, making a home away from home is everything.

For many college students, that home presents itself in Greek life. Fraternities and sororities on every college campus hope to serve as an aid in friendships and social interaction for students. Here at VCU, over 1,500 students are a part of the Greek community.

I am one of those 1,500. So, take my word when I say that your experience with sororities. Joining Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was certainly not a whim. I had to take careful consideration into whether I even wanted to be Greek. Then, I directed my attention to which council best suited my needs. As a Black woman, The NPHC stood out due to their spotlighting of Black students; a community of equivalent thought processes and ideologies. After picking the council, choosing the sorority was easy. My organization just focused on everything that was of value to me in my life.

Becoming Greek was one of the best decisions I’ve made while at VCU. Not only have I created lifelong bonds with my fellow sisters, but I’ve also been exposed to a community of compassion, connection and Black excellence.

If you’re choosing to join an organization, make sure to prioritize what you want to get out of the experience. You need to be your main focus. So, ensure that your choice fits you.

It’s more than a game at VCU

ALKING INTO THE STUART C. Siegel Center is more than just going to a basketball game, it’s an experience unlike any other.

“The Stu” is known for its raucous environment, selling out more than 160 straight men’s basketball games entering the 2021-22 season, a streak that dates back to the team’s 2011 Final Four run in the NCAA tournament.

Men’s basketball has found success playing at home, logging a 42-7 record in the past three seasons on campus, including a 84-82 win over No. 23 LSU in 2019.

Women’s basketball found similar success at the Siegel Center this past season, logging a 9-2 record during the regular season at home and winning the Atlantic 10 tournament title on the court.

For the first time since 2009, both teams made the NCAA tournament last season after the women won the conference title and the men were runner-up in the A-10 championship game.

IBRARIES HOLD A WORLD OF opportunities and adventure just in the physical books that reside on the walls. In VCU’s James Branch Cabell Library, a number of free resources exist outside of the obvious rows of books. From camera e q u i pm e n t a v a i l a b l e for loan to free access to academic journals, these tools have the potential t o u n l o c k personal creativity and help with the toughest of assignments. Check out what your library has to offer — it might give you an idea for a future crowd-pleasing project!

THE WORKSHOP The Workshop, located on the bottom floor of Cabell Library, offers hardware, software and workspaces for creative projects. Students can also loan a wide variety of equipment including cameras, audio and visual accessories, portable projectors, metal detectors and more.

Workstations in The Workshop provide professional editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

Web development software, laser cutters, 3D modeling and animation programs are also available. Audio and visual studio spaces can be reserved to produce, record and edit media. The Workshop also offers free orientation sessions about these accessible resources available and one-on-one assistance from staff members.

ONLINE RESOURCES

Resources located inside the Cabell Library include desktop computer workstations loaded with Microsoft Office, Adobe programs and other editing softwares. Both the Cabell and the Health Sciences Library (located on the MCV Campus) offer printing, scanning and fax services. Course materials and textbooks located in the library can be converted to convenient PDFs. Librarians offer one-on-one assistance with conducting research, gathering sources and more. VCU Libraries also offer individual and group study rooms that can be reserved for two-hour periods at a time.

The VCU Libraries website includes extensive online databases for research, including PubMed and Medline for health and life science materials, JSTOR for humanities-related materials and PsycINFO for psychology-related materials.

The database also sorts all available journals and scholarly research by subject matter. E-books, documentaries, theses and more can also be accessed from the online database. In addition, VCU Libraries offers virtual workshops and classes that include research tips, guest speakers and technology webinars.

EQUIPMENT FOR LOAN VCU Libraries offers a plethora of resources and loaned equipment for students to utilize such as books, DVDs, calculators and more. Students can check out books, including course textbooks and research materials for 28 days at a time. Technology equipment such as video and audio tools can be loaned for three days at a time from The Workshop.

Luckily, VCU, like most other universities, offers resources to help students during difficult times.

STAYING ACTIVE YOUR FIRST YEAR IN COLLEGE

ROM THE QUIDDITCH TEAM, TO backpacking adventures, to guided meditations — VCU students will never be at a loss for opportunities to be active on campus.

The main hub of Recreational Sports at the university is the Cary Street Gym, located at 101 S. Linden St., which houses a rock climbing wall, two swimming pools, an indoor track, basketball courts and a plethora of workout equipment. Students can also check out equipment for basketball, table tennis and more.

The gym works with Recreational Sports to host group exercise classes on a daily basis.

Classes include yoga, pilates, cycling and high-intensity interval training. These classes have a limited number of seats available and students must sign up ahead of time.

In addition to hosting exercise classes at

the gym, Recreational Sports sponsors club sports and intramural sports competitions. The gym hosts a recreational sports night, known as “Rec Sports Night” at the beginning of the fall semester to inform students about the different club sports opportunities. Students can choose to pick up a sport they played in high school, like lacrosse or soccer, or try something new like Quidditch, archery or the Historical European Martial Arts club.

Recreational Sports at VCU has merged with The Well to create “RecWell,” a new department on campus. The Well, formally known as the Health Promotion and Well-Being Center, supports students’ mental health on campus and provides resources to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The Well hosts weekly meditation programs and free workshops

on quitting nicotine products. The Well also provides sexual health education information at VCU. Its website connects students to resources on sexually transmitted disease testing, birth control options and consent.

Free condoms are also available through The Well.

The O utdoor Adventure Program helps Richmonders get in touch with the dozens of outdoor activities there are in the city. The OAP offers the most competitive equipment rental rates in the city, offering bike, kayak and canoe rentals. Students can also purchase an OAP pass for the semester to avoid paying rental fees.

The OAP organizes outdoor trips for students, including white water rafting on the James River, weekend backpacking trips and local hiking trails. OAP also houses the bike shop which provides students with information on how to take care of their bikes.

VCU student support departments roll out wellness-focused events in StudyWell campaign

ALL 2021 IS A SEMESTER UNLIKE ANY OTHER. After the pandemic closing of campus and the shift to online courses, students will soon return to in-person classes in greater numbers than we saw last year.

And, under the banner of the StudyWell campaign, a host of VCU faculty and staff are standing ready to support students in their return to campus life.

“We’re attuned and aware that many students will be eager to return to a robust campus experience, but may also be experiencing a significant post-pandemic transition,” says Laura Gariepy, Ph.D., the associate dean of the libraries who oversees Cabell Library’s service points, spaces and teaching. “Our library buildings are hubs of academic work. They are also social centers where people meet, work on joint projects, gather for coffee and conversation.”

“With our partners in the Division of Student Affairs and the Division for Student Success, we’re creating a messaging and events campaign to support students not only academically, but more holistically, too.

Now I begin my term as editor in chief — a position that I never imagined to hold at any publication. I have seen three women whom I love very dearly hold this position before me and I can only hope to make them proud. Amendment has truly changed my life. It has introduced me to people I probably would have never met otherwise and expanded my thinking on a multitude of topics. It has given me a place to make my voice heard and lets me know that I am not alone in my emotions.

Most importantly, Amendment gives a platform to the voices that need to be heard the most. Every year the journal is filled with art and writing fueled by struggle and grief and elation and joy. Each page reminds me that we live in a world viewed through seven billion different lenses, each one unique in its own way.

Now that venues are opening back up again and live music no longer seems like a thing of the past, here’s a quick guide to a few great spots to check out some live music.

THE HOFGARDEN The HofGarden is an iconic restaurant and bar located within the historic Hofheimer Building, built back in the early 1900s and today regularly hosting a variety of local jazz and rock bands. The building has three floors and includes rooftop seating so you can enjoy a great view of Richmond while enjoying some music. Some recent standout performances include the Charles Owens Trio jazz band, multi-instrumentalist DJ Harrison as well as other members of Richmond jazz-funk band Butcher Brown. If you’re looking for a laid-

Conduct a deep dive into a different genre every week, host a weekly news talk show with guests, discuss sports with your friends, literally spin records — the options are endless.

But getting involved with the station isn’t limited to hosting your own show. There are opportunities to help edit and produce audio and video projects like our Chalkboard Sessions, help promote the station on our social media and join the music team to decide what music goes on the air.
