It’s been another busy month, although with the time taken for branch related activity along with keeping up with the other things in life, there hasn’t been a lot of time to attend to the vehicles needing attention or for getting out to club vehicle related activities. There has been plenty happening so hopefully you’ve all managed to get out and enjoy your vehicles on the occasional day when the weather has actually behaved like it’s summer.

On the subject of keeping the branch running, we are fortunate to have had a volunteer come forward to take over the reins as branch secretary, with Catherine Tibbles being duly co-opted onto the committee at our last meeting. There are still a few details to sort out and hand over, so if in the interim things are still a bit disrupted please be patient, we’re all doing the best we can to keep up until it all settles in.
Sadly as most of you will probably know, our former branch secretary Rod Thrower passed away in February, his smiling face and attendance at almost all of our branch events will be missed. Thanks to those who attended his service in the clubrooms, it was a fitting tribute to someone who clearly became very involved with any organisation he was part of during his life, and the branch was privileged to have many years of his company and service on the committee.
Looking forward there’s still plenty to do and plenty of events coming up, and hopefully this weekend will report a batch of newly eligible 100 year old vehicles attending the Brooklands to Brighton run.
See you out and about
Neil Shaskey Branch Chairman

Yes we are ticking into March fairly quickly.
The past month has been full of ups and downs.
The Car Boot Sale proved a success being held on a weekend of OCBC. There were plenty of people enjoying the sunny day and grabbing bargains!
This past weekend we had our Branch Annual Rally. Henry and I had a great time organising it and would like to thank all of those who helped us get it off the ground. Without volunteers things would not happen. In particular having a tailend Charlie - to be there for any breakdowns - thanks Evan Hamblin!

Please see the Branch Annual report along with photos from the day later in this Hub.
Canterbury are hosting the National Executive Meeting on the weekend of 7th and 8th March. Henry has been busy working at getting this together. With members coming in from all over the country. Neil and myself to represent Canterbury again. To help drive our History!
Sad as it was, it was great to see so many faces at Rod Thrower’s funeral. I still expect a phone call from him about something or other, a tap on the shoulder to give me encouragement or a silly joke he sent me through in an email. Rest in peace, thank you for everything you have done!
This month is the month of the Vero Festival of Motoring being held in Nelson. Safe travels to all attending. Have fun and enjoy everything they have to offer.
Katryna and Henry

The year has got off to a great start with lots of events happening (and coming up), and plenty of opportunity to get out and get motoring. The only problem has been the very unpredictable weather, constantly taunting us with periods of rain.

Jenny, Matthew and I made our annual trip down to Dunedin for the Brighton Run on 23rd March, and as I mentioned in last month’s report I’d spent a few days fitting new hood bows and the hood back onto our Wolseley 12/16 because the long-range forecast didn’t look that flash. Well, it was certainly needed. We ran into rain on the way to Dunedin, and then it just continued all weekend. I got the car out of the trailer on Saturday morning and put the hood up straight away, and then headed down to the meeting point at First Church. Jenny and Matthew followed about half an hour later in the Ranger, by which time we had moved into place in the Octagon for the public display. Despite the fact it was raining very steadily, it was good to see there were a lot of people out to see the cars and motorcycles assemble there –hardy souls, those Dunedin people! The forecast was for heavy rain and southerly’s gusting up to 100km/h and with no side curtains I made a decision just to take the car back to the trailer at the motel and do a tail-end Charlie in the Ranger instead. We followed the route and caught up with a couple of the slower cars, including Colin Winter in the 1900 Wolseley battling the rain and the southerly about 5km from Brighton. He looked wet but determined, and made the run there and back with about 20 other cars without any issues. In the end the weather did clear to spasmodic rain, and I regretted not doing it in our Wolseley. I would have got a bit wet, but Jenny and Matthew could have taken the Ranger anyway and stayed dry. That night we had a very nice prize giving dinner at the Edgar Centre, and the next day most people on the run went out to Careys Bay pub for lunch and a catch-up. Normally most people take their veteran cars and bikes out there too as it’s a nice run, but
this year there was only one old car that turned up, and that was a vintage saloon. On the Monday we returned home, and in beautiful weather too. Maybe next year it will be better?
Our February Veteran Coffee Morning at Thirsty Acres (the first for 2026) was the next outing. Jenny and I had friends (Graham & Jennifer Ryder) from the UK Wolseley Register staying with us, so I took Graham in the 1909 Wolseley and Jenny took Jennifer in our Toyota. I’m not sure if Graham managed to relax for the first few minutes of the half-hour run out to Kirwee, as he seemed a bit perturbed about the mudguards and headlights and most other things vibrating, but I think he soon settled in and enjoyed the outing – possibly his first in a two-cylinder veteran. We had a good turnout at Kirwee, with 6 veteran and vintage cars and about 15 people enjoying a good catch-up.
The next outing was the Veteran Car Club Annual Summer Rally, held in Geraldine this year, on the weekend of 14 & 15th February. Once again the weather looked pretty patchy, but Geraldine seemed to put on its own mix of sunshine and overcast conditions which actually suited us perfectly. Most of the participants arrived on Friday afternoon, and after settling in to our respective motels we all gathered at one of the local bars for a meal that evening. The next morning we assembled outside Geraldine Auto Restorations at 9.30 to get our instructions and prepare for our adventure for the day. Local member Austin Guerin had set the route, which took us north a few miles to Woodbury, and then travelled the back route to SH79 near Gapes Valley. Much of that route was shingle, but the roads were in pretty good condition, and also damp from some rain the day before so there was no dust to worry about. From Gapes Valley we carried on along SH79 through and past Kakahu Forest, tackling the two challenging hills along the way. We were glad that a long downhill section was in the early stages of reconstruction with a 30km/h speed limit in place, as it meant we weren’t responsible for holding up modern traffic which included a few tour buses and campervans. Although we were very slow on the uphill sections, most seemed to be patient and waited to overtake in safe places. We then turned off at Mulvihill Road and doubled back to the south side of Kakahu Forest and to our lunch stop at Kakahu Angus Stud. Lots more gravel in this section with a few very rough patches requiring a bit of care. At
Kakahu Angus Stud we were hosted by the owners of the property, Tom & Anna Hargreaves. Although the Angus Stud is still an important part of the business, they have diversified the farm into a more mixed operation, including dairy, deer and crop production. The homestead and garden on the property was very impressive, and nowadayTom & Anna focus on looking after the mature English trees and lawns around the homestead, rather than detailed gardening as such. It was a beautiful setting to park the cars in and enjoy our picnic lunches. In the afternoon a minibus had been organised to take us up to the nearby Ravensdown limestone quarry where one of the staff was on hand to provide us with a very informative talk about the operation there. After lunch we had a very easy drive back to Geraldine, and enjoyed a very nice catered meal at the Geraldine Vintage Car & Machinery Museum that evening.
On Sunday morning we met again at Geraldine Auto Restorations, and then set off to the first of two homestead visits, the first one being on Waitui Deer Farm, a restored 1860’s triple-brick homestead just on the northern fringe of Geraldine. Elevated on a hill overlooking the Woodbury area and beyond as far as Four Peaks, this was an amazing property, and we were made extremely welcome by the owners Mark & Ginny Bolderston. After an hour or so there, we then drove another 25km – again on a lot of gravel – to finally arrive at the Pankhurst Farm homestead just west of Woodbury. Another fabulous homestead set in a large wooded garden, with owners Ange & Regan Blair on hand to show us around after we’d enjoyed our picnic lunch. Unfortunately, about 20 minutes into the garden tour a rain shower arrived which effectively ended the visit, but heading back to Geraldine the weather cleared again and nobody got wet. All up a great weekend of motoring and socialising which was enjoyed by everyone.
A week to get organised again, and then it was another full weekend taking part and helping with the VCC Canterbury Branch Annual Rally. No doubt someone else will report on this event elsewhere in the Hub. Needless to say it was another well organised Annual Rally with good runs on Saturday, an opportunity for a good social at the Kaiapoi Club that evening, and then field tests,
a BBQ lunch and prizegiving on Sunday. Thanks to everyone who took part, and to the large team that organised the many parts of it and helped to make it all happen. Before finishing this part of the report, I’d just like to make a special shout out to Bevars Binnie, who has been through and is still facing significant health issues at the moment. He made a special effort to turn up at both the Geraldine event and at the Annual Rally and say hello despite significant mobility problems. It was so good to see you out and about Bevars, and we wish you all the best in your ongoing battle to get well again.
By the time you read this, we will have had the Brooklands to Brighton Run for our 100+ year old vehicles, and then for many it’s off to Nelson for the Vero Festival of Historic Motoring. Look for the reports in next Hub. There will be no organised Veteran Coffee Morning at Kirwee during March, nor a Random Run, due to the Vero FHM.
Saturday 7th March – Inaugural Canterbury Brit & Euro Show at Wigram Air Force World. Entry is free for display cars – go to www.canterburybriteuro.nz for more information. Over 600 cars and motorcycles are expected.
Sunday 15th March – Twin Rivers Motoring Extravaganza at the A&P Showgrounds. See separate notice later in the Hub.
Malvern Anzac Day Run – Saturday 25th April.
Our annual run to celebrate and remember Anzac Day. See notice after this page. The run will once again start in Darfield from the Darfield Recreation Centre, North Terrace. Meet from 10am, run departs after a short commemorative service at 11.00am, then visits several Malvern War Memorials before finishing in Glentunnel.

We arrived at the Belfast Hotel (The Peg) in Main North Road, Belfast on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning ready for a 10.15am start. Concours judging started at 9.30am.
Vehicles on the short route started at Rangiora. Lots of chatter going on as always.
We headed north across the Waimakariri river heading out through the pretty Ohoka area, up through Loburn and back across the Mt Grey Downs, up to Broomfield and then into the back of Amberley where we had lunch at the Recreation Reserve which was a very large sports ground in a very scenic spot. Unfortunately, when our organisers arrived at the sports ground, the gate was locked. Thanks to Colin Hey for his breaking and entering skills!!
Thanks to Pam & Dave Dacombe with their “Model A” Uber service for ferrying some to the "amenities" as it was quite a distance from the picnic spot.
We heard someone in the Bennetts family had forgotten to put their chairs in the car, so they had to sit on the running boards!! We wonder also if Paul Ainsworth's leg has recovered from all the cranking over to restart the Harley at the Give Way and Stop signs!!
After lunch we headed out through Ashley to Rangiora, Tuahiwi and into Kaiapoi where the Kaiapoi Club/Riverview Restaurant were expecting us.
Quite a few stayed for dinner at the Kaiapoi Club.
Sunday morning - Another beautiful day for the field trials and a lovely bbq lunch. Thanks to Wayne Stocks and Bryce Shaw and Maria & Anthony Williams for lunch. After lunch the prizegiving was held. Congratulations to all those who received awards in their respective classes.
The grounds were busy as the Mustang Club was holding their All Ford Day. Thanks to Katryna, Henry, and their helpers for organising another wonderful weekend.
Our grounds and facilities are looking really good.
We appreciate how many dedicated and hard-working members are in this club.
Linda & Dave Inwood
What a fantastic feeling, a bright sun shiny day, wind in your face and the purr of the wee 49cc Velosolex motor between ones legs . That was the experience of the day on Tuesday 10th February when we headed off from the Prebbleton Reserve on yet another “VOG day” out. A small group of 10 riders plus our new backup Colin Hider turned up on the day as we headed off on the Little River Rail Trail following Birches Rd toward Lincoln with a short diversion through “Kakaha Park”. Some of you may have seen this as you travelled along Birches Rd, it’s a really nice setup with walking and cycling tracks through the park with a specific piece for BMX and Mountain bike riders, us ‘Solex riders opted out of this experience. There is also a separated space for taking your doggy for a walk and off the lead if you wish. Plus further out the back some sports grounds for Rugby and football. We were all most impressed with the setup – well worth the visit.

Continuing on we turned off at Tancreds Rd where I had told the riders during our briefing that they could “open up” the throttle along here as it was just a long straight stretch of road and there was no way they could get lost. Dave Malcolm was the only rider that took advantage of this and disappeared into the distance, the rest of us were hampered by the stupid ole’ Easterly wind which is always a bit of a deterrent for speed when riding a ‘Solex. Some of you guys will probably remember back to your school days when you always took delight overtaking a Solex when you were riding your “treadly” on your journey to school. I know I remember this vividly. (and now I own one… how things change).
A great ride in the country through the Ladbrooks area finally
brought us back to the start/finish line at Prebbleton Reserve where we loaded up and headed down the road to the Prebbleton Tavern for our lunch break and chin wag.
The trophy presentation also took place here with John Thompson taking great pleasure in presenting VOG 1 with the esteemed prize. I had made a faux pas when exiting Kakaha Park by not checking for turning traffic onto Leadley’s Rd and had been too busy making sure Colin was back on track following the pack. John reckoned I nearly got wiped out but I think the truth was a bit stretched out and he was getting his own back on me from a previous month’s ride when I had picked on him for a “near miss”. Tsk Tsk
Over and out.
Royce VOG 1

At the Vintage Car Club grounds he stood, Where engines hummed as old friends should, Where Canterbury skies stretched wide and blue, And every run began anew.
At Cutler Park in polished line, With steady hands and humour fine, He shared the road, the tales, the cheer — A quiet strength we all held dear.
He knew that life, much like a drive, Is not how fast we can arrive, But who sits with us mile by mile, And walks beside us with a smile.
Through winding roads and open plain, Through summer sun and passing rain, He travelled well with patient grace, Content in friendship’s easy pace.
Now gently has his engine stilled, Its faithful rhythm softlyilled. The final bend lies calm and bright, Beyond our present line of sight.
Yet in each rally’s rev and tone, We’ll hear the warmth we’ve always known. In chrome that gleams and stories told, In steady hands and hearts of gold.
The convoy moves — but not alone, His legacy in steel and stone. A husband, friend, both true and kind — Forever riding in our mind.
Until we meet where roads extend, Beyond the curve — at journey’s end.

It has been a busy month with club activities and March is looking much the same
The Club’s Annual Rally which was held on the weekend of 21 & 22 February was a great success. The weather was perfect, which is something to be said given the season so far! There was a good turn out of club entries. Although this could have been better given it is the club’s annual event. There were three rally routes to choose from for Saturday morning all convening at the Amberly Domain for lunch. The afternoon event comprised the Time Trial. Sunday morning commenced with five field tests at Cuttler Park. An excellent bbq lunch was followed by prize giving. These events take a lot of planning and organising, even more so when catering is involved. I was a mere helper. My greatest appreciation and thanks to the organisers who made this a most enjoyable and excellent weekend.
As many of you know Rod Thower passed away on the 10th February. A service in commemoration and celebration was held at Cutler Park on Tuesday 17th February. Rod put a tremendous amount of time and energy into our club. I will always remember him for his shear enthusiasm not only for the club and its activities but for life in general.
By the time this goes to print the Brooklands to Brighton run will have occurred. I’ve entered and have been using this run as a deadline for completing my list of “to do’s” on the Cadillac for the Historic Festival of Motoring in Nelson. I’m not there yet but the list is reducing.
The Historic Festival of Motoring is one of the Vintage Car Club’s national events and is being held in Nelson from Sunday 15th to
Saturday 21st March. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible across the event.
See you motoring out and about.

As of todays hub anything received in PDF format will no longer be added in. I have asked time and time again for items to be sent in a word document or in an email. Anything that is in PDF I have to rewrite taken extra time and working a fulltime job on the road I don’t have time to do this.

And the rain CONTINUES!!! At least riding in the wet won’t be as cold as it could be!!!
Past Events.

31st January 2026 – Fish & Chip Run. Met at the Princess Margaret Hospital for a ride to Diamond Harbour for a garage raid, but at the last minute the raid was postponed. Still did the run to DH, about 23 on the run. Good numbers!!
11th February 2026, Motorcycle Noggin. Met at the Bridge Hotel in Prebbleton for an interesting garage raid nearby. About a couple of dozen took in a great collection of vehicles; it is unbeleivable what lies behind some of the fences and sheds around Christchruch!!
18th February – Old Codger’s Run. I could not make an appearance as I was in Dunedin for the day. However, the meeting place was The Post coffee place in Tai Tapu, for a run through to Leeston and up to The Thirsty Acre in Kirwee.
21st February – Branch Annual Rally. Only mentioning this as three motorcyclists in Paul Ainsworth – 1926 Harley Davidson, Joseph McClintock – 1917 Henderson and Pete Lambert – 195X Thunderbird (the Tijuana Taxi…)took part, completing the medium run. For the record, Paul won the Motorcycle Section class as well as the Vintage Concours Cup, and Joseph won the Veteran Concours Cup! Was a run in perfect conditions, a great day out, regardless of the number of wheels your vehicle had!
Future Events
1st March (SUNDAY!!!) – Fish & Chip Run. Start at PMH then head off to towards Governor’s Bay then round to Evans Pass to finish at New Brighton. This is to view the Brooklands to Brighton 100 year old VCC vehicle run. The New Brighton Working Mens Club is opening up for the Brooklands – Brighton entrants.
7th March – Moped & Clip-on Run. Meet at Prebbleton Domain, Tosswill Road, Prebbleton 10.00 am for a 10.30 am first away. Run goes in general direction of Green Park area, and probably a stop at the Taitapu Pub on the return to the start place where you can collect your trailers etc. Quentin Wearing, 021 0759 747 is
the organiser; just turn up on the day. See the email sent out 15th Feb 2026 for more details etc.
11th March – Motorcycle Noggin. To be confirmed, but a visit to a steam vehicles garage raid is on the go. Watch out for the event reminder email with more details.
15th – 22nd March – Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring, Nelson.
18th March – Old Codger’s Run. Look out for the Event Reminder for details…
29th March – Fish & Chip Run. Note, this SUNDAY 29th March. We are looking at a North Canterbury destination, to visit and support the running of the Classic Trials Club event. This is the same club that supports us when we have run trials events at Cutler Park. More information later, look out for the Event Reminder.
8th April – M/C Noggin – a visit to a garage belonging to one of our number; he has a steam traction engine in hiding… More info next month.
10 – 12th April 2026, Jim Toohey Run. Just a heads up, this run will be over the Lewis Pass to Muchison then onto Ross on the West Coast. Bookings have been made for accommodation; look out for the details etc. in the New Year. Entry forms will be elsewhere in the Hub, plus will be on line, so get those entries in now!! Entry forms in March Hub as well.
15th April – Old Codger’s Run. More info next month.
18th April – Small Motorcycle (<250 cc) Run. More info next month…
25th April – Fish & Chip Run. Suggestion is to do the Anzac Day Malvern Run organised by the Canterbury Branch, then lunch at the Colgate Hotel after the run. More info in the April Hub.
I think the end of April as far as future events is a good place to stop; just giving an idea of the likely runs that are on into the short term future.
Cheers, CML

Greetings all,
The Annual Commercial Rally was held on 31 January – just after the cutoff date for the Feb Hub. The format was slightly different this year from past years. I had organised a tour of Zealandia Nursery as part of the rally, so we headed straight there to get the tour underway. Pedro is one of the owners and a friend we have made through our association with the pony club. Pedro gave a us a talk and a great tour of the production site of the seedlings we’ve probably all bought from Mitre 10 or a similar retailer on many occasions. I’ve done the tour before, but I don’t think we realise the grand scale on which these plants are produced or the care that goes into them. On completion of the nursery tour we were invited to their private garden to sit and have lunch. Pip had made several batches of scones and had coffee, tea and jugs of water set up on the servery. I had intended to lunch in the reserve on Radcliffe Road, but our late invitation to lunch in their garden was too good to resist. They enjoyed seeing our old vehicles lined up in their driveway. It was a stunning sunny day, so the large tress provided shade. Pip’s garden is also amazing – I’m hoping we might incorporate it into a homestead run one year. Thanks to Pedro and Pip for hosting us – it was much appreciated. After leaving the lunch stop the rally carried on with the timed section and then to Cutler Park for the field tests. By the time the entrants arrived it was very warm, and the fire engine was running a bit hot I believe to complete the field tests. I know I got a bit sunburnt out in the field.

The rally ran past Fanfare which is up near Chaney corner. A few facts on Fanfare:
It was gifted to Christchurch by the city of Sydney and erected in 2015. It has 360 fans, and they are 1.5m in Diameter. Great to see at night also!
Our rally winners were:
Arthur Bodger in the 1943 Willys MB for the timed section. Nominated speed of 26 MPH and averaged 25.2 – Well done Arthur. Michael Quinn in his 1969 International C1200 for the field tests.
This is a very smart looking truck and was also on the Annual rally. It’s the first commercial rally I’ve seen it on – nice to have it in the group.
Graham Evans in the 1930 Ford Model A Delivery was the overall winner. Well done Graham and Ann. They were the only ones to get the correct answer for the number of fans on fanfare.
Pam Dacombe was the only one to get a newspaper in the tyre while David drove around the cones. Well done Pam – great throwing arm you have!
Well done to all our 16 entrants. Numbers were a bit down on previous years.

The February Commercial Noggin was held at a private collection of motoring memorabilia owned by Terry Dalton in Burnham. It is an impressive collection of police motorcycles and other vehicles. There was a lovely 1957 Chevrolet Belair, a 1948 Mercury convertible and his dad’s 70’s Chrysler Valiant that has been owned since new. He’s even got a genuine 1991 Mitsubishi V3000 ex police car. His shed setup includes a beautifully fitted out 1950’s diner, movie theatre and seating area. While it was FULL of stuff it was super clean and very tidy. Also, a nice collection of old fuel pumps outside. A big thanks to Terry for hosting us – much appreciated.

An older Roller in London and the 1928 Bugatti in Guernsey.

I have a few Noggin options for other places coming up when it’s lighter in the evening, but Winter proves to be a struggle for options. If any club member has a venue or suggestion, please let me know.
The March commercial noggin on Wednesday 18th March is scheduled during the same week as the Vero rally in Nelson so some of our members won’t be there. I did ask for someone to host but as no-one has come forward, I will suggest you meet at the Richmond working men’s club unless someone has any other bright ideas. I won’t be there as I’m taking the Lagonda to Nelson for the Vero rally.
Coming events: The PV/PWV/P80 group rally will be in April –keep an eye out for the entry form – commercials in the era can join in too!
Safe travels to our members who are heading to Nelson. See you out on the road,
Michael
