What triggers communities and schools?

Communities are heterogenous; they have varied WASH interests and needs. VcA projects and programs unite them all without leaving anyone behind. Everyone wants to have fun and joy, that is why VcA is using fun and play through Music, Art, or Sports.

F4W in communities and schools starts with identification of participants, including communities, coaches, and teams. This is preceded by baseline studies focused on WASH KAP to guide selection of communities and schools. Community and school coaches of selected teams, who for a critical component of our project are trained. Certificates of completion awarded alongside basic football equipment to support project delivery in schools and communities.

The trained community and school coaches organize, and conduct workshops and training sessions themed around F4W drills with their community and school teams within their communities and schools. All sessions are supervised and monitored by the project implementation team

In 2020, Ugandans, including those living in the marginalized areas of Kampala needed WASH services than ever before. As the country entered the COVID-19 lockdown, the demand for functional WASH facilities soared. Nonetheless, amidst the COVID-19 lockdown and tight restrictions, F4W delivered while implementing the SOPs. The F4W niche: Outsmarting the usual.

F4W delivered WASH infrastructures to 7,200 community members. Communities have functional Water User Committees supervised by trained community coaches. Communities have fully signed water infrastructure management bylaws that define the roles of committee members, O&M plans and fees paid by community water users. Trained community coaches are a critical project structure that pivotal to functional sustainability of facilities.

Following the outbreak of a novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in China, mirrored by rapid international spread and exponential growth in death and community cases, VcA worked with KCCA and Spouts to deliver direct emergency response to Kamwokya slums, Kampala. These included water filters and handwashing facilities with soap to 5,500 members.

Community members were sensitized on the appropriate handwashing techniques with soap to promote improved handwashing behaviors central to Covid-19 management and prevention.

30 handwashing facilities were distributed to 30 communities in Kamwokya.

2,000 water filters distributed to 100 communities. This has ensured access to clean and safe drinking water during the covid-19 times.
