Letter from the

VISION

Leader of Our Pack A Shared Purpose:

Every organization has a mission. Every leader has a purpose. Throughout my career, my purpose has remained consistent: to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Whether serving communities through financial institutions or now leading the Virginia Beach SPCA, I’ve found that meaningful work isn’t defined by industry, it’s defined by the opportunity to improve lives. That is what drew me here.

As we build upon Derby’s legacy, we also embrace new opportunities to expand access to care, strengthen partnerships, and meet our community where it needs us most. Initiatives like our Wellness Clinic inside PetSmart at Hilltop and the new Neuter Scooter reflect a simple belief that the best way to serve animals is often by supporting the people who care for them and enrich their lives.

As we build upon Derby’s legacy,

Before looking ahead, I want to recognize Derby Brackett for the extraordinary organization she leaves behind. Through years of dedicated leadership, she built far more than a respected animal welfare organization. She cultivated a culture of compassion, strengthened community partnerships, and positioned the Virginia Beach SPCA to continue growing and serving our region for years to come. I am grateful for the foundation she built and honored to continue that work.

we also embrace new opportunities to expand access to care, strengthen partnerships, and meet our community where it needs us most.

Over the past several weeks, I’ve had the privilege of listening. I’ve met employees whose dedication inspires me, volunteers who generously give their time, donors who believe deeply in our mission, adopters whose lives have been forever changed, and community partners who see the VBSPCA as an essential part of a healthier community. Those conversations have reinforced something I have long believed: when people unite around a shared purpose, extraordinary things happen.

Looking ahead, I see tremendous opportunity to not simply grow our organization, but to deepen our impact. Together with our employees, volunteers, donors, adopters, and community partners, we’ll continue creating a place where compassion is transformed into action and where every life we touch matters.

Many people know us because we help animals in need, and we always will. But our impact extends far beyond our shelter. Every adoption creates a new beginning. Every affordable veterinary visit helps keep a beloved family member with the family who loves them. Every educational program, volunteer hour, and community partnership strengthens the bond between people and animals while making our community healthier and more compassionate.

Thank you for welcoming me into this remarkable community. I look forward to the work ahead and to everything we accomplish together.

Regards, Hans VonKruger CEO

Our organization changes lives every single day.

ACCESS

Bringing Care Closer to Home:

T

The New VBSPCA Wellness Clinic at Hilltop

his past summer, we took another step together to help pets stay healthy, happy, and right where they belong — with the families who love them.

On July 18, we opened the doors to the VBSPCA Wellness Clinic inside PetSmart at Hilltop, making it easier for more families to access affordable, routine veterinary care close to home. We were joined by community members, partners, supporters, and plenty of wagging tails to celebrate and see firsthand how this new clinic will make a difference for pets and people in our area. Within the first month, it was clear just how much our community needed this kind of support. Hundreds of pets and their families have already visited the new Wellness Clinic, receiving wellness exams, core vaccinations, heartworm and tick-borne disease screening, parasite prevention, microchipping, nail trims, and other important services to help keep them healthy.

Preventive care

is one of the best ways we can help pets live healthier lives and remain with the families who love them. — Mary Evelyn Johnson, DVM Veterinarian in Charge, Virginia Beach SPCA Wellness Clinic

For us at the VBSPCA, this clinic means so much more than just a new location. We understand that it is not always easy to access routine pet care; cost, busy schedules, and transportation can all make it challenging for families. By bringing our wellness services to Hilltop, we hope to make access to care more convenient for families in our community. 3 VBSPCA Creature Chronicles • Fall 2026

Preventive care truly makes a difference. Vaccines protect pets from illness. Regular checkups can catch problems early. Microchips help bring lost pets home. And having a trusted place to turn for advice gives families the support they need to care for the animals they love. Ultimately, helping pets stay healthy also helps them stay at home. Welcoming nearly 300 pets in our first month is something to celebrate, but what matters most are the stories behind each visit — a puppy getting their first vaccines, a newly adopted pet coming in for a checkup, a cherished companion receiving preventive care, or a family finding a friendly place to ask questions about their pet’s health. We are deeply grateful to PetSmart for making this new clinic possible, and to every pet owner who has already trusted us with their pet’s care. Your partnership and trust mean the world to us. Our doors have only just opened, but we are already seeing the difference — one healthy pet, one supported family, and one visit at a time.♥

Meet Grayson

CONNECTION

VBSPCA JUNIOR VOLUNTEER

At the VBSPCA, we are fortunate to have so many incredible volunteers who

give their time, energy, and hearts to helping animals in our community. We wanted to take a moment to introduce you to one of our dedicated Junior Volunteers and share more about what inspires her to give back. Meet Grayson! During her time at the VBSPCA. She has advanced to the next level of our Junior Volunteer program and now proudly wears the blue shirt. She is also approaching an incredible 100 volunteer hours and has stepped up to help train and support new volunteers. Grayson’s first experience with the shelter was through a summer camp during her elementary school years. Later, she participated in the monthly school volunteer service program, where the VBSPCA staff encouraged her to apply for the Junior Volunteer program. Since then, Grayson has discovered that one of her favorite parts of volunteering is meeting people who

come to the shelter looking for their new family members and spending time with the animals. While it can be bittersweet to see an animal she knows leave the shelter, she says it always makes her day when one of the animals she regularly sees gets adopted. Grayson is also passionate about helping other volunteers get started. She has had the opportunity to lead new volunteer orientations and activities for the school volunteer program, giving her the chance to meet people who are just beginning their own volunteer journeys. “I love that I’m able to talk to them and walk them through everything and be the person to help guide and answer those new volunteer questions,” Grayson shared. “All the volunteers are interesting people, so I love getting to know them as well!”

Talk to people because you can learn a lot from simply interacting with others.

Through her time at the VBSPCA, Grayson has learned how to work with people from different backgrounds and with different levels of experience. She has also developed important leadership and time-management skills. For other young people thinking about becoming junior volunteers, Grayson’s advice is simple: make the most of your time at the VBSPCA. Get to know the staff, meet as many people as possible, do your best to help the animals, and have fun along the way. “Talk to people because you can learn a lot from simply interacting with others,” she said. We are so grateful for Grayson’s dedication, leadership, and enthusiasm. Her commitment to the animals and her willingness to help others make her a wonderful example of the impact young volunteers can have at the VBSPCA.♥

IMPACT

Legacy Giving

When you think about your legacy, what do you want to leave behind? For many VBSPCA supporters, the answer is simple: a kinder community and a better future for animals. Legacy gifts offer a meaningful way to provide lasting support for animals for years — and even generations — to come.

4 Ways to Create Your Legacy

1 Give through a Donor Advised Fund

If you already have a Donor Advised Fund (DAF), consider recommending a grant to the VBSPCA. DAFs offer donors flexibility in directing charitable support and can also be incorporated into a broader philanthropic strategy. A DAF can be an especially meaningful way to involve family members in giving and pass charitable values to the next generation.

2 Give appreciated stock

3 Leave a gift through your will or trust

A charitable bequest allows you to designate the VBSPCA as a beneficiary of your estate. You can leave a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, or a portion of what remains after providing for loved ones. It’s one of the simplest ways to create a lasting legacy without affecting your current finances.

4 Name the VBSPCA as a beneficiary

A gift of appreciated securities can be an impactful way to support the VBSPCA while potentially providing tax benefits. Instead of selling appreciated stock and donating the proceeds, donors are to give the securities directly to the VBSPCA.

You can designate the VBSPCA as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, retirement account, investment account, or other eligible asset. Beneficiary designations are often simple to establish and can make a meaningful future gift.

Your Love for Animals Can Live On

To learn more about planned giving or to confidentially discuss how you can create a lasting impact for animals, please contact Danielle Nance, Chief Advancement Officer, VBSPCA at 757-427-0070 ext.146.

The most meaningful legacies are built around the values we hold closest. If animals have always had a special place in your heart, consider making them part of your legacy.

We encourage you to consult your financial, tax, and legal advisors before making a planned gift. The VBSPCA does not provide legal or financial advice.

A planned gift doesn’t have to be complicated, and it doesn’t have to change your current financial plans. It starts with a conversation about what matters to you.

In Memory of Bill Campbell

The Virginia Beach SPCA remembers longtime friend, advocate, and former Board President Bill Campbell. Bill was a generous leader in our community, serving on the VBSPCA Board of Directors and continued as an honorary board member thereafter. A lifelong animal lover, Bill shared his creativity, wisdom, and passion generously with the VBSPCA — from helping guide the organization as a board leader to creating artwork for fundraising efforts and advocating for the many ways the VBSPCA serves animals and people. His commitment to our mission earned him the VBSPCA Lifesaver Award in 2023. We are grateful for Bill’s extraordinary service, his belief in the power of compassion, and the lasting mark he leaves on the animals and people whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by the VBSPCA family.♥ 5 VBSPCA Creature Chronicles • Fall 2026

COLLABORATION

Homeward Bound Hounds An Incredible Rescue Journey What Comes After Rescue

Their rescue made headlines. But for seven hounds who arrived at the Virginia Beach SPCA this spring, being rescued was only the beginning. In late April, PETA fieldworkers and law enforcement responded to a property where seven hounds were found alive despite being severely underweight. Three others had not survived. The seven who made it were welcomed into the care of the VBSPCA, where they began receiving the medical attention, gentle support, and hope for a brighter future that every animal deserves. Their story has touched many hearts and here at the VBSPCA, we have the privilege of witnessing the next chapter in their journey.

What Happens Next

When the seven hounds arrived, we took things slowly, letting them heal at their own pace. They needed nourishing meals, gentle care, and plenty of rest. Six of them tested positive for heartworm disease, so we began the careful process of treatment, making sure each dog received the attention and patience they needed to heal. “Cases like this require patience because recovery doesn’t happen all at once,” said Mary Evelyn Johnson, DVM, shelter veterinarian. “Our first priority was helping them become medically stable and giving their bodies time to heal. As they began feeling better, we also started seeing their personalities emerge. Watching that transformation has been incredibly rewarding.” But recovery isn’t measured only in medical charts. For dogs who had spent their lives confined outdoors, many of the things we consider ordinary were entirely new. Walking through a doorway. Resting on a soft bed. Going for a walk on a leash. Playing with a toy. Hearing a kind voice and discovering that the person approaching them was bringing dinner, a treat, or simply a gentle scratch behind the ears. Those moments matter.

As they began feeling better, we also started seeing their personalities emerge.

Watching that transformation has been incredibly rewarding. — Mary Evelyn Johnson, DVM, Veterinarian in Charge, Virginia Beach SPCA Wellness Clinic Aside from tending to their health with exams, treatments, and ongoing care, our animal care team, volunteers, and foster families have helped these hounds discover a world filled with kindness and new experiences.

They will continue to receive the care they need: walks, enrichment, nourishing meals, cozy beds, and plenty of affection. Most importantly, we see them for who they are today, not just for what they have been through. Stories like this remind us that while rescue is a vital first step, true healing takes time and care. Recovery takes time, medical care, patience, and a whole lot of compassion. For these seven dogs, this is what comes after rescue.♥

We introduced new experiences gently, always giving each dog the space they needed. Every small step forward was celebrated, and above all, we honored each dog’s unique journey toward healing. As days passed, the once-frightened and uncertain hounds slowly began to reveal their true personalities. They became Fred, Tallboy, Barrelboy, and others — each one an individual with their own spirit and story, no longer defined only by their past. We have watched tails wag, noses explore, and personalities blossom. Some found comfort in foster homes, while others discovered the joy of walks and the kindness of people. And then came the moments everyone here had been waiting for.

Adoptions

Several of the hounds have gone home with families who adore them, starting a new chapter filled with love and care. For those still waiting, we know their happy ending is just around the corner. Until their forever families find them, they are cherished as part of our VBSPCA family.

ome cats have a little extra personality, and Elsia had plenty to share! Elsia first came to the VBSPCA in May after her family had to make the difficult decision to surrender her due to a move. From the beginning, Elsia made sure everyone knew she had something to say. She was a very vocal girl who loved to communicate with her people and was not shy about letting them know what she was thinking! Elsia is also a very unique looking tuxedo cat. Her adorable crinkled ears, sometimes called cauliflower ears, are the result of hematomas she experienced when she was younger. Her ears are fully healed, but they do require a little extra care and cleaning to help keep them healthy. Aside from her special ears, Elsia is a healthy girl with a big personality and an even bigger heart. While at the VBSPCA, Elsia

quickly showed everyone what a loving lap cat she could be. She enjoyed attention from her people and was happiest when she could curl up nearby and soak up some love. She may have a little anxiety from time to time, but that never stopped her from being her sweet and affectionate self. After spending a few months waiting for her family, Elsia’s adoption day finally came. In July, she found her forever home! We are so happy this one-of-a-kind girl got the happy ending she deserved. Happy Tails, Elsia! We hope your new home is filled with cozy naps, plenty of lap time, and lots of love.♥

COMMUNITY EDUCATION

Prepared Pets,

Safer Communities Emergencies often catch us off guard.

Maybe a hurricane shifts direction, a family has to leave home quickly, or a gate swings open during a storm. In those moments, a beloved pet can go missing when we least expect it. That’s why a little preparation can make all the difference — for you and your pets. At the Virginia Beach SPCA, we believe that humane education helps us all create a kinder, more compassionate community for animals. Part of that care is making sure pet owners have the knowledge and tools they need to keep the animals they love safe. Here in Hampton Roads, preparing for storms is simply part of life. Including our pets in those plans helps keep every member of the family safe.

Start with Identification

One of the easiest ways to protect your pet is to make sure they can be identified if they ever get lost. A collar with a current ID tag gives anyone who finds your pet a quick way to reach you. A microchip adds another layer of safety, offering permanent identification if a collar or tag comes off.

Preparedness is an important part of responsible pet ownership. Having a plan, keeping your pet’s identification current, and having medications and essential supplies ready can make a tremendous difference when an emergency happens. — Kindra Haymaker, VBSPCA Director of Clinical Operations 11 VBSPCA Creature Chronicles • Fall 2026

Is your pet microchipped? Schedule an appointment today at vbspca.com/clinic. If your pet is microchipped, take a moment to make sure the chip is registered and your contact information is current. If you move or change your phone number, remember to update your pet’s chip details so you can be reached if they are found. The CDC recommends using both: pets should have collars and tags with current contact information and be microchipped, with the microchip properly registered.

QUICK CHECK: Do you know what phone number is  registered to your pet’s microchip? If you’re not sure, now is a good time to check.

Make Pets Part of the Plan

If your family needed to leave home tonight, do you know where your pets would go? It’s a question worth thinking about before an emergency ever happens. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management reminds Virginians that not all shelters and hotels accept pets and recommends identifying family, friends, or other petfriendly locations ahead of an evacuation. Keep carriers and leashes in a spot where you can grab them quickly. Know where your pet’s veterinary records and medications are stored. It can also help to talk with a trusted neighbor or friend who could care for your pets if something happens while you’re away. And practice when you can. A carrier is only helpful if you can find it quickly, and your pet is comfortable going inside, even when things feel stressful.

Ready to Go:

Build a Pet Emergency Kit

Just as families keep emergency supplies for the people in their household, pets need supplies of their own. Current CDC guidance recommends preparing two weeks of food and water for each pet and a two-week supply of necessary medications. Store important documents in a waterproof container and keep your supplies somewhere you can access quickly.

Your Pet Emergency GO KIT  Two-week supply of food  Two-week supply of water  Two-week supply of necessary medications  Food and water bowls  Collar with current ID tag  Leash, harness and secure carrier  Veterinary and vaccination records  Microchip information  Recent photos of your pet  Pet first-aid supplies  Waste bags, litter and sanitation supplies  Bedding, blanket or familiar toy DON’T FORGET: Needs vary by pet. Birds, rabbits, reptiles and other companion animals require their own food, transportation, temperature and care considerations. Build your emergency plan around the animals who actually share your home.

When the Storm Arrives

Being prepared continues to matter even after the storm arrives. Bring pets indoors early, before the weather gets worse. If you need to leave home, keep dogs on leashes and make sure cats and other small animals are safely contained. Stress and unfamiliar surroundings can make even the calmest pets act differently or become confused. If you are asked to evacuate, take your pets and their emergency supplies with you if you can. Including pets in your plan helps keep everyone — people and animals — safe.

If You Find an Animal Who Needs Help

A caring community looks out for all animals, not just those in our own homes. If you find a loose or lost pet, remember that a family may already be searching for them. Try not to assume the animal was abandoned.

If the animal can be safely approached and contained: • Check for identification. Look for a collar and tag. • Have the pet scanned for a microchip. Reunite Tonight

scanning stations are available at the Virginia Beach SPCA, Chesapeake Humane Society, and PETA in Norfolk to help identify lost pets and reunite them with their families. • Keep the animal separate from your own pets, since you may not know their health history or how they will react to new friends.

• Be careful with animals who are injured or frightened. Pain and fear can make even the friendliest

pets act in ways we don’t expect. If you cannot safely help an animal, or if they are hurt or in danger, reach out to local animal control for help.

And remember, your safety matters, too. Please do not put yourself at risk by entering traffic or approaching an animal who seems aggressive.

Preparation Is an Act of Compassion

We may not know when the next emergency will come, but we can choose how prepared we are when it does. Check the microchip. Update the ID tag. Find the carrier. Pack the supplies. Make a plan. Each of these is a small step, but together they can make a big difference for an animal when it matters most. At the VBSPCA, humane education helps turn compassion into action by giving people of all ages the knowledge to make responsible, humane choices for animals. Sometimes, compassion begins with being prepared.♥

JOY

A Home for

Tom Holland

F

or Tom Holland, finding his family did not happen overnight. After coming to the Virginia Beach SPCA from a difficult hoarding situation, he spent a long time waiting for someone to see the wonderful dog underneath all of the uncertainty. He patiently waited for the day when he would leave the shelter behind and finally have a place to call home. That day came when the Murner family met him, and they knew almost immediately that Tom Holland was the right fit for their family. “We knew he was the right fit for our family as soon as he bounded into the meeting room at the VBSPCA! We loved his energy and were so impressed with his hops!” Tom Holland was his usual enthusiastic self during their first meeting. He checked everyone out, enjoyed some pets and even turned the bench into an agility prop. His playful, people-focused personality made quite the impression, and soon he was headed home with his new family.

Coming Home

Since his adoption day, Tom Holland has made himself right at home. He quickly learned his family’s routine and now knows exactly when it’s time for his 5 p.m. “happy hour” walk. If Mom is still working on her laptop after 5 p.m., he makes sure she knows it’s time for a lap around the neighborhood before dinner, followed by snuggles on the couch before bed. His mornings are just as exciting. As soon as he wakes up, Tom Holland rushes to his sister’s room, ready for his morning walk. He also greets his family with morning cuddles before running back to his crate to grab one of his favorite stuffies. In fact, he still keeps a stuffy in his mouth much of the time, one of the many little quirks his family adored about him at the shelter. Tom Holland has also brought some entertaining new tricks into his family’s life. One of their favorites is what they call his “meerkat.” When he gets excited, he stands on his hind legs and stretches his front paws as high as he can to get closer to people. He can even take three or four steps while standing upright. He is also learning to be quite the gentleman, with his family working on basic manners, especially keeping his paws off the table. His family lets him sit at the table as long as his paws stay off, giving him a front row seat to all the important discussions. 13 VBSPCA Creature Chronicles • Fall 2026

One of the Murners’ favorite memories with Tom Holland happened while playing fetch in the backyard. He eventually lost interest in his own ball and laid down, so the family grabbed some lacrosse sticks and started playing catch between themselves. Tom Holland immediately perked up and began chasing the ball back and forth between them. When they tried throwing his ball for him again, he made his preference very clear. He wanted the lacrosse ball. It is moments like these that make Tom Holland’s story so special. After spending so much time waiting for his chance, he now has a family who knows his routines, laughs at his quirks, takes him on his favorite walks and gives him plenty of opportunities to be part of the action. Most importantly, he has a family who loves him exactly as he is. “We are so happy to have found Tom Holland and he fits in perfectly with our family!” For a long term resident like Tom Holland, finding a home is more than an adoption. It’s the moment when all of the waiting finally becomes worth it. He waited for his family, and now he gets to spend every day with them.♥

We are so happy to have found Tom

Holland and he fits in perfectly with our family!
