EDITORIAL Life these days is so hectic, it can be hard to find quality family time.

We’re often ruled by the demands of our jobs. That’s why these few weeks of vacation are so precious: we can unwind and recharge, together with those we love most. And that’s why it’s so important to find a place everyone in the family can enjoy.

The inspiration for this project happened on one of our vacations. Menno, a writer and keynote speaker, travels far and wide to interview successful, distinctive entrepreneurs. On one of his trips, Menno interviewed a resort owner who asked him a question that got him thinking: “Why spend your well-earned vacation with your children on un­comfortable plastic beach chairs?” Indeed: our kids don’t like to sit around. They love to play, to meet other children their age and to experience adventure. Their mother, Angela, is an interior designer who appreciates style and beauty. So that’s the mix we’re looking for.

This book celebrates the best family friendly, stylish vacation spots we could find.

These hotels, resorts and lodges are not only great for children, but highly enjoyable for adults too. Each destination offers something special, particularly when it comes to design, sporting facilities, location, children’s activities and entertainment, culinary experience and cultural sights. We personally visited each and every accommodation, and photographed and rated it. At several spots, we invited the owners to talk about their own vision and their drive to provide a unique vacation experience.

This process resulted in a truly exclusive selection, from a spectacular wildlife lodge in South Africa to stylish Italian estates where children are practically revered. We wish you lots of fun on your next family vacation!

CYPRUS, PAPHOS

ALMYRA HOTEL Our faces are kissed by a cooling breeze, as we lie down on the sumptuous outdoor sofas at the Notios Restaurant. The children’s hair is still damp from swimming. That’s hardly surprising, as there are fewer than a dozen steps from the pool to any of the three restaurants. The grilled octopus, special kiddie pizzas and a giant platter of Sushi – courtesy of a Japanese chef – are all delicious. The stunning view of Paphos Bay helps to heighten the atmosphere.

Almyra being ranked highly on a culinary ‘coolness’ scale is no wonder. Ashley Goddard, our welcoming general manager, used to be a chef himself. His words ooze passion, as he explains his plan to turn the 5-star hotel Almyra into an essential foodie destination: “We want our guests to feel completely comfortable, and delicious good food, in a relaxed atmosphere is a huge part of that.” The children take to the combination of Mediterranean and Asian food, and ask for a second helping, which is rather out of character for them.

“Almyra has quite a Zen vibe in it’s design” For anyone who visits Almyra sans children, and who’d love to escape the school holiday crowds which can flood the hotel, there is relief to be found in the separate – and closed for under-18s – spa with infinity pool and gym, a place with an unforgettable sea view for anyone working up a sweat. Exercise is a key part of Almyra. They even have their own swimming and triathlon coach. So guests who are less inclined to competitive exercise, can be spotted cautiously swimming lengths across the secluded bay in front of the hotel.

Almyra has quite a Zen vibe in its design. Wide loungers with oversized white sun umbrellas line the green-coloured stone-hewn pool, evoking the look of an on-trend Miami beach club. It is, however, a beach club with little spades floating in the water and children licking away at their ice lollies. Almyra stops just shy of being the ultimate design heaven-on-earth; the main building is a square cube of a building, a familiar sight in many a concrete-clad holiday village. The difference is that it is paired with visually more pleasing separate pavilions. You could almost assume the retro-look to be intentional.

Those very pavilions are where you find the roomy Kyma suites. Their special bonus is a shared roof terrace, with concrete lounge sofas and enormous white cushions to match. Perfect for an evening drink, particularly at sunset.

The cool factor aside, this is truly a family hotel. In order to make life easier for all those visiting parents, not just during their stay but beforehand, too, the hotel is famed for its ‘Baby Go Lightly’ programme. You can book ahead all the possible accoutrements which you need for your infants, so that you needn’t overextend yourself with luggage en route. And they really do mean everything you could possible need: from a buggy through to diapers. Just let the hotel know in advance, and they will have it all ready for you when you arrive.

The English-speaking experienced nannies of the Globetrotters Club are experts at keeping children aged 4 months to 2 years happy with age- and weatherappropriate entertainment. The great Adventurers Club is for children aged 3 years to 4 years, with creative, locally inspired activities such as baking Cypriot cakes and playing traditional Cypriot games in the garden. Then there’s the fantastic Voyagers Club for children aged 5 years to 7 years; a team keeps them busy in an interactive programme of cultural and sporting activities from Cypriot dance moves to beach visits. For children aged 8 years to 12 years Almyra offers the Pioneers Club, with a programme of resort-wide sports and activities.

And finally there’s Escape: a dedicated hangout for 13 - 18 year olds featuring a pool/table, tennis table, air hockey, Nintendo wii and darts as well as a chill out area for catching up with friends. All clubs are open 11 month a year, and in winter it is on request.

Almyra is located in tourist hotspot Paphos; hardly the epicentre of good taste, though there is a wealth of little shops where you can browse the pretty wares on offer. Though you will find plenty to do in the hotel and in Paphos, if you feel like a change, a 20-minute drive will bring you to a small, but enjoyable zoo. And you must remember to visit the famous Ancient Roman mosaic, a short walk from Almyra along the wide promenade.

CYPRUS, NEO CHORIO

ANASSA HOTEL A big smile underscores the words of Thanos Michaelides, “We see guests and staff as one big family”, and his hands make a gesture encompassing all of the idyllic Anassa. His very own Anassa. One of the three hotels which make up the family business his father once founded, and which Michaelides himself and his sister now run together.

As we sit at a table on the Pelagos terrace – one of the four restaurants within the resort grounds – his sociable personality is never out of touch with his staff and passing guests. “We encourage our staff to stay true to themselves, we want them to be authentic no matter what. Obviously, we do train them in a range of skills, but letting them use their own mind is absolutely key.” A beautiful sea bass and delicious carpaccio are set before us. Two suntanned little boys come to greet us politely. “These are my nephews, maybe they will be the owners one day”, Michaelides smiles.

“This is surely what a royal family experiences on holiday” To be sure, there are worse places for a child to grow up. Anyone staying at this resort feels like the king or queen of Cyprus. By no means a coincidence, as Anassa is the Greek word for queen. The drive through the grounds, the reception in a spacious lobby, it all adds up to a feeling of being in an exceptional place.

The real sense of magnificence doesn’t hit you until you are on the balcony of your condo or villa. Anassa is situated at the feet of the gently lapping Mediterranean waves, on the shores of the Akámas Peninsula. The peninsula itself has been nominated to become a national park. This area can only be reached by boat (for rent on the resort beach), or 4-WD, and is stunningly beautiful.

Before the resort was built in 1996, this plot was a cheap piece of building land with a handful of olive trees. They have been carefully incorporated, interspersing the impressive congregation of white buildings. When you spy the golf cars, you can be sure: this is a sprawling set-up. It is never overwhelming, though; the beautiful garden with its bounty of flowers is a softly rolling backdrop for the various low buildings, and brings harmony to the whole area. Luxurious is an understated description; this is surely what a royal family experiences on holiday.

Not in the mood for exploring? The resort itself has plenty to offer you. Its pleasant vibe means that families with children feel particularly at home. First of all, there are an impressive four different swimming pools. A specially heated outdoor pool (for children), two additional pools in that same stunning garden, connected by a waterway, and an indoor pool to round things off, situated in the same building as the outstanding Thalassa Spa and gym. Children are only allowed there during morning hours.

The level of service is unparalleled; the staff-per-guest ratio is virtually one-to-one. Breakfast, in particular, showcases this fact (‘Look Dad, 26 sorts of jam!’); staffers recognise you after a day and greet you cordially. Service is top-of-mind for them, but thankfully there is none of the stiff obsequiousness which is often part of the five-star hotel experience. Two of the restaurants offer special children’s menus, where dining is possible from 5.30 pm and where there are colouring books and more, to engage the little ones.

Speaking of engaging: the smoothly running Junior Entertainment Club offers a range of activities for three different age groups, from tiny tots of 4 months up to hyperactive teens. Graffiti workshops, beach treasure hunts, table tennis tournaments and many other activities ensure that parents are able to enjoy their reading time guilt-free. The best spot to do just that is the amazing and enormous roof terrace, where Takis, the head bartender is never without a smile, as he clearly revels in his reign of the bar. You must try his famous ‘Rose Petal Mojito’, or any of the other six ‘signature cocktails’ on offer. Then lean back in the soft loungers on the terrace and watch the sun drop behind the horizon.

You are allowed to take these out without having a navigation licence, a regular driving licence is sufficient. Do make sure to carefully study the map provided, because of shallow pockets, on both sides, where you could run aground in the coral – not what you want to happen by any means.

ITALY, FASANO

BORGO EGNAZIA The last rays of sunshine caress the cream-coloured buildings of Borgo Egnazia. Soft music resounds through the narrow streets of what resembles a traditional Apulian village. Walking towards the central square the Piazza, the heart of the Borgo, the music grows louder and, at the point where the buildings give way to the Piazza, we briefly imagine ourselves to be on the set of a film by the Italian director and film maker Federico Fellini.

People from all ages have gathered here, some seated on the chairs at the centre of the square and other on a semi-circular low wall that appears to embrace the Piazza. Everyone has their gaze trained on a group of opera singers who are presenting a fantastic small-scale opera production, without any need for scenery or other decorations. Even our children hold their breath, watching the performers with their mouths open in astonishment.

You don’t need to be an opera lover to intensely enjoy the finale of this fantastic day. Even our arrival at Borgo Egnazia was a ‘grand’ affair. Located in the robust region of Puglia, the 5d-star hotel appears to materialise out of thin air at the end of a dusty road. Fortunately, we are also near the coast and a refreshing breeze is blowing our way, which provides a welcome relief from the fierce summer heat.

“What child wouldn’t want to cook in his very own culinary studio?”

In addition to the Borgo area described above, it also features a main building called La Corte. We are astounded at the magnificent architecture, combining Mediterranean tradition and modern design. This building hosts many of Borgo Egnazia’s services, including the Due Camini restaurant and the impressive Vair Spa. Although this section caters more to couples than to families, children are welcome here as well.

The Borgo itself is the highlight of every family holiday. Where else would you for example find a restaurant that is intended exclusively for children? Just out of earshot of the other restaurants at the Borgo that cater to an adult audience you will find a genuine miniature version. There is also plenty of entertainment for teenagers at the dedicated Fichi d’India Teens Club with its soccer academy, adventure park, pool games, arts & crafts lessons, pool games and water sports.

There are various accommodations that cater especially to families. The two-storey casetta is an excellent choice. Children will be delighted with the children’s room with its bunk beds, and the roof terrace is also magnificent. The other rooms at the Borgo are somewhat smaller and therefore better suited for couples with a baby or toddler. Of course, if you really want to pull out all the stops, you can rent one of the deluxe villas.

Our youngest daughter announces triumphantly: ‘Mums and Dads are not allowed in here!’ That’s no problem for us, because at Trattoria Mia Cucina the finishing touches are just being put on our wood-fired pizzas, from which a

A perfect equilibrium” delicious aroma is starting to waft in the direction of the big table at which we have just taken a seat. How about learning to prepare these delicious dishes at home after your holiday? Nothing could be easier, because Borgo Egnazia also features a culinary academy that embraces the principles of the ‘slow food’ movement.

Everything at Borgo Egnazia breathes a relaxed, languid and village-like atmosphere. We quickly enter into a conversation with other parents, the staff is friendly without being intrusive, the children have enough space to keep any nuisance to a minimum and, at the same time, it all feels completely natural.

Apart from a leisurely stroll around the hotel or lounging around at the pool, you can work off any extra pounds you may have gained on account of the sumptuous meals served here at one of the four tennis courts or the San Domenico Golf Club. After a game of golf or tennis, try one of the many water sports activities offered at Cala Masciola, the Borgo’s private beach located just a five-minute walk from the hotel. Younger children can play to their heart’s content at the Trullalleri Kids Club, where they are invited to participate in countless fun activities such as treasure hunts, face-painting, dancing, theatre play and story-telling. What our children enjoyed most of all were the small animals at the petting zoo, the huge playground and the movie night.

Borgo Egnazia’s central location makes it the perfect base to indulge your cultural self and explore the history of the Puglia region. Make sure to visit the authentic fishing villages of Savelletri di Fasano and Polignano a Mare. Despite the large number of tourists visiting these picturesque villages, where you will spot toothless grannies knitting on a stool on their doorstep and cats basking in sunlight, they have both been able to preserve their old-world charm. In the tidal pools and cracks between the rocks Italian families look for clams left by the incoming tide, which can be bought on the village square, cooked to perfection.

There we are: eating the aromatic shellfish from an ordinary paper bag with a plastic pricker.

Wow! orgo Egnazia is * Bbeautifully designed, with a keen eye for detail that is apparent throughout the complex, without it ever becoming kitschy. The pure passion in the Borgo’s design is overwhelming. here other hotels tend * W to skimp with activities for teenagers, the team at Borgo has so much to offer that many teenagers even forget to fiddle around with their phones. Even the most petulant teenager will want to take part in the varied offering of activities. orgo is a wonderful * Bholiday destination even in the less popular months.

Settle down in front of one of the many fireplaces on rainy days and, before you know it, the sun will come out and you will find yourself relaxing in the swimming pool, sheltered from the wind.

ITALY, SAVELLETRI DI FASANO

MASSERIA TORRE COCCARO If you’re looking for a child friendly hotel with a historic character, you will surely love Masseria Torre Coccaro as much as we did. The property is a genuine masseria and this is reflected in the old buildings and beautiful “village square”. One shouldn’t expect a very modern hotel. It’s somewhat rustic and the rooms and the exterior reflect the original style of the 16th century.

To get to Masseria Torre Coccaro, you might be better off using the navigation system, because we found it quite a challenge to find this somewhat remote hotel. After finally arriving, we discover that the 5-star Masseria Torre Coccaro is an island of relaxation amidst the gorgeous olive groves of Puglia.

You will find bungalows that lie scattered around a main building. All the bungalows are built from whitewashed limestone and have suites and rooms that provide all the modern comforts and are a mix of elegance and simplicity.

An ancient white cave has been converted into the Orange Garden Suite which even has a private heated pool. The Suites in the Tower of the main building have a spectacular view of the entire estate and the sea.

“The most exclusive beach of Southern Italy” Masseria Torre Coccaro is situated in extensive grounds and we can easily spend an entire afternoon exploring the vegetable herb garden, the pool area and the surrounding nature. Our kids even manage to find an enchanting chapel. It is such a beautiful setting only about half a mile inland from the Mediterranean Sea. A free shuttle takes guests to the private Coccaro Beach Club.

The owner and staff understand what unpretentious luxury should be. We are quite taken by all the well thought out details: a roof terrace, a hot tub, the spa, the little gym, the fresh flowers all over the place, etc. Yet, the hotel is small enough to feel intimate. Staying here feels like a get-together of a couple of old friends and families. In other words, it feels like home but you don’t necessarily need to hang out with each other. We are therefore not surprised to hear that a large number of guests keep returning with their families.

Masseria Torre Coccaro surely knows how to give kids a good time. They have a game room, pizza making classes, a shaded playground and a football field.

As parents, we are very pleased with the services provided by a staff member who entertains the kids in the huge pool while we eat and read a bit. There’s a reliable and safe child care service that is available all day and watches over children by the pool, in the playground or during the evening meals. The beach is beautiful and has fine sand that is wonderful for children to play in. Adults and

“Hopefully they will find some time to relax...” children alike can enjoy a horse ride on the beach. The Coccaro Beach Club has a mini club for children between the ages of 3 and 12. And children can even take tennis lessons, cooking classes and Italian lessons. Hopefully they will find some time to relax…

There are no less than 4 restaurants at Masseria Torre Coccaro: Egnathia, serving the local Puglia food; Le Palme of Masseria Maizza, with a creative Puglai cuisine; Cabana by the pool with a light fresh menu; and last but not least, the Coccaro Beach Club, with everything from fish to pizza or even sushi on the beach.

Imagine wonderful dinners on the outdoor patio by the pool lit by hundreds of lights. All restaurants serve delicious food using high-quality local products such as mozzarella, vegetables from their own garden and their own high-grade olive oil.

Torre Coccaro organises numerous events in the evenings like pizza making, modern dance, folk music, barbecue dinners and an open-air cinema night. They also offer yacht and sailing boat excursions that include sea fishing. You can play a round of golf on the estate or you might go for a bicycle tour.

It’s a rural retreat and after a few days you might want to explore the surrounding area. The hotel and the neighbouring sister hotel, Maizza, have regular evening events. The Puglia region has interesting places to visit as well as a wide range of very good local restaurants. Don’t forget to visit Castel del Monte, an architectural wonder. The beautiful white Trulli houses of Alberobello and the wine estates are also worth a visit.

THE NETHERLANDS, NOORDWIJK

GRAND HOTEL HUIS TER DUIN The name says it all! Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin looks like a truly royal destination in a unique spot on the Dutch coast with views of the North Sea and the stunning dunes in front of it. Living in the Netherlands, we’ve seen this hotel many times on trips to the coast and have always wondered what it would be like to stay here.

In fact, many well-known guests have stayed here including Barack Obama.

Members of the Dutch and Belgian Royal Family are also regular guests at Huis ter Duin. And the Dutch national soccer team always stay at this hotel when preparing for their matches. Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin also hosts many conferences, both national and international, because of its central location between the biggest cities in the Netherlands and its proximity to Schiphol airport.

The 5-star hotel Huis ter Duin has a rich history. In 1880, the local population were dependent on fishing. As the mayor believed that the village had much more to offer, he broke ground on the highest point of the dunes and a seaside hotel was built and opened in 1885. Today, the hotel consists of two parts:

“This beach is one of the best in the Netherlands” the Grand Hotel and the Nouvel Hotel. The Grand Hotel survived a big fire in 1990 and has five floors. The Nouvel Hotel was built after the fire and has eleven floors.

We stay at the Grand Hotel. The charming rooms have a classic interior in keeping with the hotel’s long history. The rooms are clean and well-appointed. The Deluxe rooms, the Suites and Penthouses have all been renovated to give a spacious feeling. After a long day at the beach, we can’t help but appreciate the very comfortable beds, and we all love the view.

We are spending this holiday with our youngest daughter and her friend Floris.

They are magnetically drawn to the colourful paintings of Pierrots made by the artist George van Herwaarde. The owner of Huis ter Duin, Marion Noorlander, started buying these paintings after the birth of her first grandson. She fell in love with the colours and images of the paintings. And this feeling is shared by many.

The hotel often receives letters from old and young who are touched by the Pierrots.

Children and beaches are often a perfect combination and you will find plenty of sand for them to play in right in front of the hotel. You’ll also notice some playground equipment and an enormous chess board in the garden. If the weather isn’t that warm, you can always use the indoor swimming pool.

Furthermore, you can ask for the babysitting service if you want to have some quiet time alone.

Don’t expect a kids club that is open all year round. Unfortunately, you won’t typically find much of this kind of kid’s entertainment in the Netherlands at all.

However, Huis ter Duin does offer a kids club during the Christmas and Easter holidays. During these holidays, parents can enrol their children to watch videos, colour, do crafts and eat together.

Huis ter Duin has no less than three restaurants: the Michelin starred Latour Brasserie and La Terrasse both inside and, the beautiful Breakers Beach House outside. As we have the good fortune of having lots of sunshine at the time of our stay in October, we love to spend much of our time there. All restaurants offer a kid’s menu. Breakfast is served in a huge room. Not exactly our idea of a cosy room, but it surely shows the hotel’s classic history.

Since this is the Netherlands, there might be days when the weather won’t be that good. You can take that opportunity to visit other nearby cities, such as Leiden, Amsterdam, Haarlem, The Hague and Rotterdam. There are several great theme parks and family attractions, such as Madurodam, Duinrell, CORPUS (minimum age for admission is 6 years), Archeon and Space Expo.

If you have children with a cultural mindset, then try one of the many museums or climb the tower of a church and let yourself be charmed by the old villages.

If you are in for politics, you may want to see The Hague’s Binnenhof, the seat of government. We went to Museon in The Hague; the museum for culture and science and a great place for children to explore.

THE NETHERLANDS, ROTTERDAM

SS ROTTERDAM HOTEL You may think a cruise ship experience is just a summertime thing.

Not at all! We spent a wonderful November weekend on the ss Rotterdam which is now permanently moored in the city of Rotterdam. Although the ship doesn’t sail any longer, there are plenty of things that give you the feeling you are at sea. What’s more, the ship’s history takes you straight back to the 1950s. Every part of the ship evokes the glamour of that time.

Driving on the quay, our oldest daughter and her friend Sis are in awe of the giant steamship. On the way to check-in, we are welcomed by a boarding steward.

As it happens, the staff are all dressed in uniform. Checking in also means a warm welcome for the kids; as they have their own special place to register and sign themselves in.

The 4-star hotel made a lot of history. It was christened by Queen Juliana in 1958 and was first used as a transatlantic liner, then as a cruise ship. “Around the world in eighty days” was its advertising slogan. The ship once belonged to the Holland-America Line. This shipping company arranged passage to North America for many emigrants. It even cruised around the Caribbean, as we were

told by one of the many volunteers guiding guests around the ship. Some of them have worked on the ship for years so know lots of stories about “La Grande Dame” and the famous guests who have stayed aboard. The ss Rotterdam once accommodated 1,456 passengers and is the largest passenger ship ever built in the Netherlands. Nowadays, the ship offers 256 hotel rooms and has become a multi-purpose facility.

The kids stay in a room next to ours. Both rooms maintain their original low ceilings, so they don’t feel very big. But they offer all the space and comfort you need. A nice detail is the Dutch books from a bygone era found in every hotel room. You can enjoy a truly delicious dinner in one of the ship’s restaurants: the Club Room Restaurant or the Lido Restaurant, both are spacious and unique.

But the kids, having spotted the countless small yellow boats slicing through the water, can’t resist the thrill of a boat trip. So, we order a water taxi that takes guests to 21 stops in and around the centre of Rotterdam, and set off through the waters of the Maas to the nearby ‘Ballentent’. Here you can eat the best meatballs in town. A reservation is necessary though.

Back on board, the kids discover an incredible playroom with all kinds of Playmobil toys. The Playmobil cruise ship immediately attracts their attention.

The kids, multitaskers as they are, play with the whole range of toys while watching a movie. While they are having a good time, we consider going to

The next morning, breakfast is served in the Lido Restaurant. The kids are writing a message that will be sent in a bottle – a service provided for the little guests.

Various tours are available and there is even one especially for children. So on our tour we find ourselves searching for 12 hidden questions. Although it’s in Dutch, all the guides are very willing to help you out. Must say, we are lucky our kids are not complaining because the outdoor swimming pool can’t be used at this time. They decide to go for a dry swim anyway and end up with a real Captain’s Diploma.

Do not forget the Salon Aliyak for a nice relaxing massage, manicure or pedicure.

The ship also has a theatre where guests can regularly enjoy performances as well as films. Every Saturday, a film is shown for children in the afternoon and one for adults in the evening. We could easily have spent more nights here.

Besides the water taxi service, there is a free shuttle service to the metro station Rijnhaven. From here, you can go anywhere you want. You might prefer the Dutch way of transportation and rent some bikes from the ss Rotterdam, or try a scooter. The port of Rotterdam is the largest and most important port of Europe and is nice to visit. There are many ways to experience Rotterdam and the centre has lots to offer. We explore ‘Villa Zebra’ at the Stieltjesstraat (also accessible by water taxi) which is a nice museum with art exhibitions for children between 3 and 12 years old. It is, however, a hard choice between this museum and many others such as ‘Strips!’ (the cartoon museum), the 185-metre-high Euromast, the ‘Wereldmuseum’, and the Maritime Museum. After your visit, have lunch at Hotel New York, the former head office of the Holland-America Line which is nearby and a real eye-catcher in Rotterdam and a sister hotel of the ss Rotterdam.

MARTINHAL BEACH RESORT We saunter towards the resort’s main square, enjoying the early morning sun. Although the square is the main entertainment hub, it’s virtually deserted in the early morning and we enjoy a peaceful moment at the Mercado Deli & Bake, where we order a freshly brewed cappuccino, a newspaper and a croissant. Basking in the first rays of sunshine, we wait to see what today will bring.

A little later, the kids come to tell us that they will be going to the Raposinhos Kids Club (for children aged 2 - 5) today for the first time. While they run excitedly into the club, which is filled to the rafters with toys, they shout: ‘Look at the cool caps we got!’ We take advantage of the opportunity and enjoy another cappuccino. Older children will find plenty of entertainment tailored to their age at the Explorer Club (ages 13 and under) or The Blast Club (up to the age of 16) with more adventurous and exciting activities. On rainy or overcast days children are welcome to hang out in the Blue Room, which boasts a football and a pingpong table, an Xbox, a Wii, a PlayStation and a large video screen.

Guests with babies can make use of the childcare centre run by professional staff.

Another convenient extra for guests with babies is the Baby Concierge, through whom you can book everything you need in advance, from cots and high-chairs to bottle warmers. That certainly saves a lot of luggage space!

A week at this 5-star resort isn’t enough for the children to participate in the many activities on offer - and then we haven’t even mentioned the beach, the sports activities and the swimming pools. The resort has no less than five swimming pools. The children are ecstatic. ‘That means that we can try out a different one every day!’ Two swimming pools grace the Village Square and are ideal for families. One generously sized pool spans indoors and outdoors.

Adjacent is another smaller pool designed for toddlers. With this many swimming pools, if it’s crowded at one pool, you will easily be able to find a peaceful place to relax at one of the others.

Although Martinhal is everything but small, it’s is surprisingly easy to find your way around the resort. This gives it an almost intimate atmosphere, which can also be explained by the fact that so many of the activities that guests take part in every day take place on the main square. The casual ambiance with a personal touch is reflected in how the resort has been landscaped. Most of the accommodations for families are ‘Village Houses’. The term house is absolutely correct here, because they are nothing like ordinary hotel rooms. Our ‘Grand Deluxe Ocean House’ features two storeys: the bedrooms on the ground floor. And the upper storey is reserved for the big living room, open-plan kitchen and big veranda. The sliding glass doors offer stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean.

It’s clear that one of the keywords at Martinhal is ‘unique’, which is reflected in the wide range of different villas and houses. While the Ocean Houses are located at the resort’s most elevated point, the two and three-bedroom Bay Houses are situated in more private surroundings at the edge of the resort, with splendid views across the nearby nature reserve. There are also Garden Houses, for whose residents there is a separate swimming pool. Guests who prefer a pool all to themselves can book one of the Pinewood Houses. Larger parties can opt for one of the villas featuring two to five bedrooms and a private pool.

This resort is absolutely perfect for families who enjoy sports. Located near Sagres in Portugal at the most south-western point on the European continent, there is always a little wind, from a pleasant ocean breeze to nearly tempestuous gusts of wind. This is why the Martinhal Beach features a Water Sports Centre where guests can hire equipment for windsurfing and other water sports. Club 98 is the resort’s lively tennis and sports club and caters to all your needs. There are two tennis courts, two glass-sided PADEL courts, a swimming pool and various areas and fields reserved for football and other sports activities.

After a day of relaxing alternated with a little activity, we take a seat on one of the drift-wood lounge sofas on the square directly in front of the M Bar – Family and Surf Bar. When you’re there, don’t forget to check out the genuine 1970s VW with a stripped interior for children to play in and the dedicated kids bar with iPads and games. While we wait for our drinks, we discuss where to go for dinner.

O Terraço has, as you can tell from its name, an enormous terrace with splendid views of the ocean as its secret weapon and serves delicious authentic Portuguese cuisine. There is a kids corner with small tables, colouring pencils and games supervised by a member of the Kids Club. We could also dine at As Dunas, featuring scrumptious seafood and, as an additional bonus, a small playground with a trampoline next door. In the end, we don’t want to pass up the delicious pizzas at Os Gambozinos. However, this time we decide not to eat on the lovely covered terrace, but take our freshly baked pizzas home to our villa, where we enjoy the view of the sun setting in the ocean from our private veranda.

PORTUGAL, LISBON

MARTINHAL CASCAIS FAMILY RESORT There are hotels where children are just tolerated, then there are child friendly hotels and then we have the super child friendly hotels.

Martinhal Cascais definitely qualifies for the last-mentioned category.

After a 30-minute drive from Lisbon airport, we smell the sea as soon as we drive through the pinewood and enter the hotel’s grounds.

When we stop in front of the large glass façade of the lobby, our kids immediately spot the large playground between the villas. Yes, this sure is a child friendly hotel.

However, before the kids can do any climbing, we get a warm welcome and a short explanation about all the facilities and activities at the resort and of course we want to explore the villa that we can call our own for the next couple of days. The ground floor has an open-plan kitchen, a comfortable living room and patio doors that open out onto a huge terrace. Upstairs, two spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms. Including everything a family may need: safety gates, kid’s cutlery, a complimentary basket of groceries, black-out roller blinds, etc.

If you are also fine with a bit less space, there are fabulous rooms and suites. The main feature in some rooms is a bunk bed that miraculously comes out of the

wall and in the morning disappears into the wall again. A magic trick we have to show to our kids over and over again. The suites have a living space that can be separated from the rest of the suite by a sliding wall.

Not only the rooms but also the other spaces in the hotel are beautifully designed and decorated. The 5-star hotel can even be labelled as luxurious, yet without the stiff ambiance. Because of the focus on children, the staff don’t care much about mugs that are knocked over or children’s fingers on a glass door. The pinnacle of child friendly design can be found in the lobby: an enormous purple knotwork made of a very thick material. It is art, though art on which children can horse around. Still, they are better off outside in the playground that we spotted when we arrived here. More than 2,000 m2 of sheer entertainment: a zip line, large bounce cushion and a climbing tower for hours of unbridled fun. With a drink in their hands, relaxing parents can watch their offspring from the terrace.

Need some cooling down? You can choose from no less than three swimming pools: a heated pool adjacent to the playground and the kids club, a non-heated inside and outside pool in the spa and a large pool with a sunbathing lawn that is surrounded by pine trees offering plenty of shade – especially in summer.

Martinhal Cascais is situated between two golf courses and is a mere 10-minute walk to the sea. It takes 15 minutes by car to reach the sandy beaches. Or drive to

Now there’s no reason for you not to enjoy your dinner at one of the restaurants of Martinhal Cascais. The restaurants O Terraço, Os Gambozinos and M-Bar serve good food and are child oriented. Not only do they have an extensive kid’s menu but also a children’s play area supervised by a member of the staff who plays games with the children. Every morning O Terraço provides a breakfast buffet.

Although they also serve bacon and beans as part of a typical English breakfast, O Terraço mainly offers a healthy breakfast that includes fruit and vegetable smoothies, a variety of health foods and delicious bread rolls with or without gluten. Os Gambozinos has an Italian cuisine. Furthermore, M-Bar serves quick snacks throughout the day. It is also a great place to linger on super-sized sofas with a book or magazine. For example, when the children are enjoying themselves in the kids club located in the same building. The kids club, with over 700 m2 of play space, welcomes children of all ages – from babies as young as 6 months old to overactive teens. A place of honour is reserved for the Vintage VW camper van that now serves as a play corner. Various play areas have been set up to appeal to the interests of the different age groups; no child gets even the slightest chance of getting bored thus making it possible for parents to make a trip in the surroundings. It is also possible to have a babysitter come to your room. Parents travelling with a baby can have the baby concierge arrange all sorts of baby items beforehand. That saves parents a lot of hassle.

Martinhal Cascais is located near the Sintra Cascais National Park, alongside a mesmerising coastline flanked by a hilly countryside near the beautiful city of Sintra. The coast has an irresistible appeal to water sports enthusiasts with activities, such as surfing, sailing, diving or going on a boat trip. It’s just as easy to organise a hiking trip or a horse riding tour, book a tennis court or rent a bike to explore the area.

ASIA GARDENS HOTEL & THAI SPA Unlike its name suggests, Asia Gardens Hotel & Thai Spa is situated in Spain. To be more specific: in the sun-drenched region of Alicante. We are slightly sceptical, as it sounds quite odd to stay in a fully Asianstyle hotel in Spain. Yet, as soon as we enter the grounds, it feels like we are about to experience something really unique. The complex of buildings is built of red stone and is in perfect contrast to the luscious greenery of the surrounding gardens.

This 5-star hotel has already won many awards – in the category ‘luxury resort in Spain’ and as the best family hotel in the Mediterranean. Once inside, the welcoming feel of both the soft relaxing music and the home-made Thai lemongrass tea fit in beautifully with this almost mystical and serene experience.

Having passed the vast lobby, our eyes are instantly drawn to an oasis of flora.

The garden of this resort is designed to create an Asian environment in a Mediterranean climate region. Over 200 different species of plants and trees have been planted, 80% of which are of Asian origin. That’s why we see a wide range of stunning trees and plants, waterfalls flowing from one pond into the other and a variety of small paths meant for exploring the gardens. The collection includes rare trees with extraordinary names, like Drunk Stick, Elephant Foot, Jupiter Tree

and the White Bird of Paradise. In addition there is also a variety of fruit trees and a magnificent collection of no less than 40 different Bamboos. Besides all this we see flowers everywhere. No wonder, as the hotel knows an average of 8 hours of cloud-free sunshine every day of the year, making it one of the sunniest spots in the whole of the Mediterranean region. The gardens have been ingeniously designed; laid out at various levels, so you are unaware of the other guests staying at the hotel.

After exploring the gardens, we try the main pool, a series of interconnected swimming pools with pool steps everywhere. A part of this swimming pool is for exclusive use by VIP guests – great if you want some privacy. Yet, there is ample space at the main pool to guarantee a relaxing stay. Two other swimming pools are heated, rather pleasant in October. One for adults only and one for families.

This holiday is all for and about the ladies: Angela is travelling with the kids, her sister Trudy and her daughter Iris. This 12-year-old young lady is sure to play a trick or two, but she is immediately told off by the staff when she jumps over a wall. Safety first. All year round, children from 4 to 12 years can enjoy themselves at the Pirates Kids club. Children under the age of 4 can go to the MiniClub, provided they are accompanied by an adult. During the summer months there are even more activities. The Junior Club organises fun activities for children between the ages of 9 and 16, like Pilates POP, Modern Dance, AcroYoga

and Taekwondo classes. There are theme parties in the evening and the children can enjoy their dinner together. At the time of our stay, we see ghosts and bats everywhere as it’s Halloween. It is therefore no surprise our girls come “home” with drawings in this theme.

Our rooms are somewhat further away and it soon becomes clear why. In one of the corners is the kids club with the pirate ship as play area. The heated kiddy pool is also nearby. We fully enjoy our rooms, with beautiful sliding doors between the bathroom and the room. The beds are luxuriously large. Guests who prefer a bit more space and luxury can choose from several suites. These are high up and thus have a superb view of the sea.

There’s also lots to choose from at breakfast; varying from carrot drinks to champagne. The hotel amply caters for all tastes. As far as the children are concerned, they don’t get such delicious pancakes for breakfast at home. The staff is very nice and child friendly and trying to make our daughter laugh. The hotel counts no less than 9 restaurants. Restaurant Koh Samui has, apart from delicious food, plenty of children here. The Zen Snack Bar (yes, really) is a good place if you want to eat by the pool. The In Black restaurant (adults only) is a good choice when your child is enjoying himself at the kids club.

Health freaks will be in their element in the Thai Spa. This fabulously decorated spa offers a wide range of treatments and 2- to 7-day programmes. And we must admit: the wellness retreats look very tempting.

Villages such as Altea, Calpe, Jávea and Moraira are ideal for outdoor activities, marine sports or for sunbathing by the Mediterranean Sea. There are fine sandy beaches all around; Caja de Finestrat has wonderful golden sand and some good rocks to climb. Besides, it’s only a 10-minute drive. We went to Altea, a town with many sights and shops. Next time, we’ll make sure to visit the Chocolate Museum in Villajoiosa. Travelling inland, you can admire the beauty of the regular landscapes and the rich cultural heritage of towns like Elx, Orihuela and Benialí.

MARBELLA CLUB HOTEL After a warm welcome we are given a tour of the premises of what may very well be the most iconic hotel in Spain: the Marbella Club.

Elated, we walk through the lovely, park-like estate with its many rooms and suites built in charming single-story architecture, interspersed with one gorgeous free-standing villa after another.

All of this beauty remains entirely unnoticed by our kids: all they have eyes for is the 5,000m2 kids club. Their mouths are hanging open in astonishment and excitement: ‘Mum and Dad, this looks like a children’s village'.

After all, what child wouldn’t want to cook in his very own culinary studio and eat the results with his newly made friends in the adjacent ‘tavern’? Or participate in a dance class in the fully equipped dance studio, paint in the art studio, play the newest games on the computers in the games room, swim in the special children’s pool, make bars of scented soap for his grandparents, ride a pony, plant vegetables in the garden and, if that’s too much activity, choose a book from the library and read it, ensconced in a comfy bean bag chair?

Once they’ve discovered the Kids Club you’ll have a difficult time indeed to get your children to explore the rest of this luxury hotel with you. However, if you think the 5-star Marbella Club is mainly for children, you’ve got it all wrong! While the children amuse themselves to their heart’s content at the Kids Club, their Mums and Dads can unwind at the spa, enjoy an extensive lunch at one of the nine restaurants and bars, or swim a few laps in one of the three swimming pools.

Perhaps it’s a good idea to let all of this sink in over a cool drink. Black and white photographs of Brigitte Bardot, 007 Roger Moore and Audrey Hepburn look down at us from their picture frames while we settle in at the ‘Champagne Bar’.

They were all, at one time or another, the guest of Prince Alfonso of HohenloheLangenburg, a flamboyant aristocrat who in the 1940s acquired the most splendid plots of land on the Spanish Costa del Sol near Marbella to establish the Marbella Club - the first luxury resort in the region - in 1954. Not only film stars were attracted to the small chunk of paradise that Prince Alfonso created; leading banking dynasties such as the Rothschilds and Oppenheimers felt equally at ease here. As a matter of fact, they still do: we discover during our stay here that several members of the first-mentioned family are in fact occupying one the private villas on the estate.

Fortunately, mere mortals are also welcome to stay at the Marbella club, although it goes without saying that it costs a pretty penny. However, after a week in an environment like this, your batteries will be fully charged to last you through another year. Anyone hearing the name Marbella will immediately think of lots of bling-bling and ostentatiously expensive cars. You won’t find any of this at the Marbella Club. You could almost call the setting old-fashioned - in a positive way. No matter how grand it is, there are no situations where you could possible feel awkward or self-conscious and the staff is extremely friendly and informal.

We are staying in two interconnected Deluxe Junior Suites, beautifully decorated in a subdued, understated style. Our broad terrace looks out over the garden and one of the swimming pools. If you prefer a view of the sea, the resort also offers several accommodations, in the classic whitewashed architectural style typical to Andalusian villages, just a stone’s throw from the beach and the promenade.

And if you’ve just won the lottery: why not book the ‘Villa del Mar’? There’s more than enough space in this majestic villa hidden from view on the resort grounds.

With a surface area of 6,000m2, the villa features six bedrooms (the biggest is 250m2) and nine bathrooms. Finally: a house where there’s no need to queue for the bathroom! When the weather is overcast, simply light all seven fireplaces and watch a film in the villa’s private cinema. And when the sun does start to peep from behind the clouds, it’s only a 20-minute drive to one of the professional 18-hole golf courses - or visit the Marbella Club Equestrian Centre, where all the resort guests are welcome to choose a mount. If you’re feeling a little less energetic, just stroll down to the resort’s private Beach Club for a freshly brewed espresso and a home-made pastry, a copious lunch from the acclaimed buffet or a lovely cocktail, served on the beach (if you like) while basking in the last warm rays of sunshine on your comfortable lounger.

PUENTE ROMANO BEACH RESORT Take a stroll down the artificial pier curving into the Mediterranean Sea for a stunning view of this amazing 5-star resort right on the beach. At the end of the day, as soon as dusk approaches, hundreds of twinkling lights create a fairy-tale atmosphere.

Our path illuminated by the first soft rays of moonlight and the still-warm sand beneath our feet, we return to the resort to nestle ourselves on the outdoor terrace of the Sea Grill restaurant with a glass of good wine. The kids continue doing what they’ve been doing all day: playing to their heart’s content on the almost deserted beach. We watch them play, assuring one another that everything is fine.

We could, of course, be lazy and remain here on the terrace, looking out over the sea with the lights of Marbella twinkling in the distance. We are already acquainted with the delicious Mediterranean cuisine offered by the Sea Grill, where it’s difficult to choose whether your ‘catch of the day’ should be cooked in the Tandoor Oven or on the Charcoal grill. But because we have heard that there will be live music at the ‘Plaza Village’ tonight, we stroll down to the main Plaza of the resort with the kids in tow.

There could hardly be a better offering of culinary delights anywhere than in Puente Romano, with the seemingly infinite variety of restaurants situated all around the Plaza. First of all, there are two restaurants run by Dani Garcia, the acclaimed Spanish chef crowned with two Michelin stars: Dan Garcia, the more luxurious restaurant that bears his name, and the more attractively priced and laid-back bistro. Of course, there are plenty of other possibilities if you’re not set on a Michelin-starred dinner. Serafina offers excellent Italian food (don’t forget to take a look at the replica of the authentic Roman bridge), or you can eat at the Thai Gallery or try out Uni (Japanese-Peruvian fusion) or Celicioso (100% gluten free).

There’s no need to worry about whether the children are enjoying themselves, too: they can play in the playground right next to the Plaza, sand from the beach still clinging to their toes. Teenagers too old for the swing sets and the slide are sure to enjoy the movie nights at the Kids Club, popcorn included.

With a rosy glow from our wine and the sun, we take our last stroll of the day to our Junior Suite, featuring more than 60m2 in ‘understated’ design, a spacious terrace with splendid views over the botanical gardens, a bathroom in Egyptian marble and two bedrooms. We hear the children whooping with joy when they discover the Welcome Teddy Bears waiting for them in their room.

You could easily spend two whole weeks at Puente Romano without too much physical exertion. The three swimming pools (one of which is kept at 26 °C all year round) are inviting, to say the least. There is also a separate paddling pool for toddlers. And if that’s not enough relaxation, you can also visit the Six Senses Spa with its inexhaustible array of body treatments and massages. All in all, there is plenty of time to fill the hours between breakfast, lunch and dinner!

On the other end of the spectrum, there’s plenty of adventure for people who get restless after spending a mere hour on a sunbed. The resort offers an enormous tennis complex. Featuring 10 top-flight tennis courts, it is acclaimed one of the best in all of Southern Europe. Boris Becker, John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg are among the many sports celebrities who have worked up a sweat here!

Fortunately, amateur tennis players are more than welcome to practice the finer skills of the sport here during private or group lessons, and shown off what they’ve learned on the Centre Court with space for 2500 spectators.

Situated right along the middle of the seven-kilometre promenade connecting the city of Marbella with Puerto Banú, the resort is a perfect base camp for all sorts of excursions. Explore the promenade by bike (the resort offers rental bicycles for adults as well as children) or put on your running shoes. Then again, the Fellah Hotel – a 30-minute ride from Marrakesh – is indeed not an average hotel. In the middle of the countryside, a group of buildings most closely resembling a Mexican hacienda seem to appear out of nowhere. Yet here, the perennial snow on the Atlas Mountains makes a beautiful backdrop. The broadlysmiling young man at the entrance who is dressed in a leather jacket and 70s shirt turns out to be the doorman. Our luggage is loaded onto a heavily-used handcart and we goose step across the hotel grounds before checking in under the watchful eye of the former bodybuilder, action hero and politician. It is best to describe this hip design paradise as gypsy/bohemian chic. The 5-star hotel oozes creativity.

While the luggage is taken to our room, we walk with the welcome drink through the lobby, the half open restaurant and on to the huge swimming pool. Again, a beautiful view that will stick with us for the next couple of days. The metreshigh cactuses add to this picture-perfect setting. Ibiza meets Mexico meets vintage design meets Morocco. Even more, it is all imbued with a high level of

Comfortable lounge chairs, day beds and nice dishes on the menu that can be ordered throughout the day. Seriously strong cocktails, freshly fruit and vegetable smoothies, brochettes of lamb, chicken and squid and all other sorts of tasty food. Everything served by the pool on extra large Moroccan platters. If you prefer to eat your meal seated at a table, the terrace is only ten steps away.

It is all so relaxed that it is only after a day or two that parents start to wonder where their children are. It isn’t often that we visit a hotel where children can horse around like here. Either in the playground mentioned earlier or in the Kids Club during all sorts of creative activities with a new programme every week.

You can think of a storyteller, painting lessons from artists-in-residence, soap and perfume making workshops, nature explorer tours or discover the flora and fauna in the hotel grounds and surrounding fields.

If you opt for a quiet read or need some serious gaming, you can visit the hotel’s library with game consoles. For children who wish to let off some steam, there are boxing sessions in a real boxing ring for the future Schwarzenegger. Or grab some mountain bikes with your family and explore the hotel’s surroundings. It is impossible to get bored. Yet, doing nothing is perfectly acceptable as well. Guests can choose from a wide range of activities that are neither flashy nor compulsory, so hanging out in or by the swimming pool is just as fine.

On one of the evenings of our stay, a show is performed by local theatre makers on a stage which is surrounded by dozens of lights.

In the rooms you’ll find everything you need, but don’t expect any excessive luxury. Wooden floors, rough plastered walls in natural shades and locally made rugs complete the look. Most of the rooms have their own terrace or balcony to while away the evening. Some (junior) suites even have a fireplace and a beautiful egg-shaped bath. Extra mattresses for the children can be put up in all the rooms.

The rooms are located in a variety of buildings that can also be hired as a whole if you travel with a large family. If you do, you live in your own enormous villa with a great number of bathrooms, a large living room, a fully equipped kitchen and often a considerably sized swimming pool. If the rooms are hired separately, kitchen, lounge and swimming pool are for common use.

Not that you really need all this space, because the main building – besides the restaurant – also houses the TOUCO café which is entirely run by locals and where they serve authentic dishes or a glass of Moroccan mint tea. When the children are lying in bed after an action-packed day and with their bellies filled, it’s time to party in club ‘Salon Mahler’. There’s something for everyone’s liking: from a subdued piano concert to an uplifting DJ set.

Whatever party is celebrated at the Fellah Hotel at night, the mornings are quite mystical. As soon as the sun peeps over the mountains, the last wisps of night mist dissipate and the world slowly comes to life. A breakfast buffet is being prepared while early birds lean back on the freshly made lounge sofas with a hot mug of strong coffee. Although it is almost impossible, try not to eat too much before the massage at the hammam or spa as it is likely to do you not much good. That would be a shame as the massage is sure to make you feel like you are in paradise.

ROYAL MANSOUR “Dad, how many other people are sleeping here?”, our daughter wonders in amazement as she absorbs the room. We have just been welcomed by a butler in, as turns out, our very own Riad. This isn’t your average hotel room, nor a suite, but an identical copy of a traditional Moroccan house. That’s not surprising because we are in Marrakesh, one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco.

And we sleep in style indeed as the Royal Mansour hotel also serves as one of the official guesthouses of King Mohammed VI. Situated on an impressive location in the heart of the city, the 5-star hotel comprises a total of 53 Riads. The lay-out of all Riads is the same: the ground floor has a central courtyard with an electrically operated glass roof. Arranged around this open-air courtyard are a dining room, a lounge, small kitchenette and a bar. On the first floor are, depending on the size of the Riad, one up to four bedrooms and as many bathrooms. The absolute highlight is probably the terrace roof with a plunge pool, or an actual swimming pool, fireplace, various lounge chairs and a traditional Berber tent with floor cushions. On top of it all, a breathtaking view of the surroundings.

One of the things the butler said during the tour of our small palace and that sticks with the kids is the mention of the ‘secret’ underground corridors. So as not

Unless, of course, you don’t want to be disturbed at all. The children are exhilarated when they get a unique ‘behind the scenes’ tour the next day and wife and children all of a sudden enter our lounge from a hidden panel door.

Really everything revolves around the wellbeing of the guests. We have seldom, if ever, seen the likes of a hotel with a similar level of perfection. It already starts at the airport where a special hotel employee awaits our arrival and escorts us to a special ‘fast track’ and so we end up at the luggage belt within minutes. Next, a chauffeur stands ready to take us to the hotel in a leisurely style. In a mere 30 minutes from the bottom of the airstair to the threshold of our own Riad.

Only the very best artisans were brought to Marrakesh to apply their knowledge and skills. You can’t come here without having any visions of the fairy tales of One Thousand and One Nights. Especially when the sun sets and thousands of lights are lit. To many people, simply wandering through this paradise is a dream come true. Although this is an extremely luxurious hotel, it isn’t uptight or formal at all.

Children can run around to their heart’s content and are being treated like little princes and princesses. There’s enough for them to explore. Even the youngest guests are sure to receive a lot of personal attention. When, for example,

After savouring this nectar of the gods, it’s time to relax in the swimming pool. The welcoming and low-key kids club is conveniently situated next to the kiddy pool. For the little ones, there’s loads to do: creative workshops, dancing lessons, dress up fun and treasure hunts. Teens can go wild on the game consoles.

If they still have energy left, be sure not to miss the famous El-Fna. It’s only a tenminute walk from the hotel. Early in the morning, fortune tellers, snake charmers, musicians, tooth pullers, barbers and other ‘artists’ take over the square. Around sunset, dozens of food stalls appear out of the blue and cook a variety of delicacies on searing hot coals. Make sure you agree in advance on the amount of money you wish to spend, then sit down on the chairs and let it all happen. There are, of course, many other sights to see in this unique city and its surroundings. What about mountain biking in the Atlas Mountains or cooking classes in a traditional Kashba. For the odd souvenir you can go to the souks. Just strolling along the stalls with spices heaped in colourful pyramids, exotic fish and heaps of rugs is a sight in itself. The kids just can’t be lured away.

You may have guessed that a stay at the Royal Mansour isn’t the cheapest of holidays. On the other hand, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The hotel exceeds every luxury standard ever experienced before. The three restaurants are all renowned for their high standard of gastronomy and the spa is unforgettable.

Spread over three floors, there is a wide range of treatments. These take place in a striking example of architecture of white wrought iron that resembles an enormous bird cage. This is one, however, that you wish not to flee from!

When we come to relax in the spa’s second swimming pool, we experience once again the extent of the staff’s hospitality. After a long play with the children, we lie down on the lounge chairs at the edge of the pool. One of the hotel employees unassumingly takes over our role and pulls along the kids on foam pool noodles through the water while they are screaming with laughter.

Wow! level of service is * The unequalled. If you so desire, they will fetch you from the airport and take you back there as well, all part of your stay. Two concierges are at your service and, if you wish, you can even get a personal butler. TIGMIZA SUITES & PAVILLIONS It takes a whole day before our kids discover the third swimming pool.

That’s not as strange as it sounds because Tigmiza Suites & Pavillons is located in the middle of a palm oasis stretching over no less than 6 acres. Just 20 minutes from the chaos of Marrakesh, this is a place of retreat and relaxation. Built in the traditional Kabash style, the complex is pretty as a picture.

Although it seems as if the sand-coloured buildings have been here for ages, the luxury boutique hotel was built only some years ago. This doesn’t mean the hotel has no soul. On the contrary. At the end of our first day, we can say – while we are enjoying our delicious Mojitos and special kid-friendly cocktails – that it feels like staying with relatives. Well-to-do relatives, that is, as the level of comfort is extremely high.

We are staying in one of the 14 luxurious villas. A ground floor with beautifully designed furniture, art on the wall and a fireplace for the nights which can be quite chilly, especially outside the summer season, because of the proximity of the Atlas Mountains as well as – neatly hidden in an alcove – a large bed for the kids with their own bathroom. Grand glass doors open out to a spacious terrace with, much to the kids’ delight, our own swimming pool.

The first floor is decorated in a similar style: colourful rugs, cushions and blankets, a huge master bathroom and another enormous terrace. Everything exudes a very personal atmosphere; luxurious, yet cosy. That’s not surprising as the hotel is a true family business. Once established by father, one of his sons is now the general manager and female family members are responsible for the major part of the hotel’s design and art. Their personal touch and love of interior design is evident.

Whereas the villas are suitable for families, the 3 so-called pavillons are slightly smaller than the villas but equally beautifully styled, and they have a splendid private terrace. For couples, there are 10 spacious suites each decorated in a different country theme based on a round-the-world trip.

The expansive hotel grounds as well as the relatively small number of guests make us feel we are in a haven of peace and quiet. We have the swimming pool all to ourselves for the entire day, although more than half of the hotel was occupied. If you’re in for a lazy holiday, the various swimming pools are all you need. Right behind the main building where the above-mentioned suites are situated, you find the heated swimming pool with right behind it the main pool that is surrounded by very relaxing lounge chairs, fluffy bath towels and a pool bar where you can get drinks and light meals all hours of the day. After a day of hanging out in the various swimming pools or having made an exciting trip to Marrakesh, it is good to relax on the roof terrace with a breathtaking view of the Palmeraie. Or, if the weather lets you down a bit, in the English Gentleman’s bar and in the Colonial Safari-styled Masaï night bar later in the evening. The children are bound to make other plans once they have discovered the hotel’s hidden attraction, the in-house cinema. Guests can pick from 200 films and sit in the largest and most comfortable chairs we have ever seen. Our kids are absolutely stunned when their selected movie is shown in their own language on a metres high screen and it turns out they are the only guests in the theatre. When, on top of it all, the kids are served popcorn, they are over the moon with joy.

While the children are enjoying themselves, worn-out parents can either unwind in the nearby spa of the hotel or sweat it out in the gym. The hotel’s 18-hole golf course is just as spectacular – then again, what isn’t.

Impressed by it all, we prepare for dinner. After sunset, the hotel grounds are lit by a myriad lights and the homelike and service-oriented, personal attention continues in the restaurant. As there is no special kids’ menu, the chef is ever so willing to prepare something suitable for our kids. If you wish to have dinner in the relaxing surroundings of your villa, the meal is as easily served on your own terrace.

NAMIBIA, ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

DOLOMITE CAMP Arriving at this lovely lodge after travelling through Namibia is quite a surprise. It’s situated in the far west of Etosha, the largest national park in this beautiful country. You can already spot game while ‘en route’ through the park. The several waterholes around Dolomite Camp assure great wildlife sightings besides providing stunningly dramatic and interesting landscapes.

The camp is a welcomed respite after several days of camping and sleeping in roof tents on top of our 4wD-cars. The lodge is a prime destination for honeymooners, or a ‘boys-only’ safari trip. And surprisingly it is also very suitable for families with children. Children under the age of 6 can even stay free of charge.

Etosha National Park offers a range of accommodation options. The three main camps, Okaukuejo, Halali and Namutoni are ideal for camping or staying in a chalet. Dolomite Camp is one of the smaller and more exclusive locations on the west side and, thus, is further down the park. The western part of this park normally doesn’t have as much game as the eastern part, but if you do think of travelling across the West, combine your trip with a good night sleep at Dolomite

Camp. You have a good chance of seeing some game, such as rhinos, giraffes, elephants, leopards, lions, springboks, spring hares, gemsboks, red hartebeests and lots of birds. What’s more, the seasonal flowers on Dolomite Hill are an absolute highlight for botanists.

Upon arrival, leave your car at the bottom and get ferried up to the reception.

Then delight the children by going to your chalet in a golf cart. If you are up for a short hike, the alternative is to walk with a bit of climbing. But, if you have young children or don’t feel like climbing, you’d better not choose the highest chalets on the mountain. The lodge is named after an outcrop and contains a high percentage of the mineral dolomite. This results in amazing rocks and views of a spectacular sunset.

The lodge is managed by the NWR (Namibia Wildlife Resort). The atmosphere is friendly and based on a ‘take it easy’ attitude, but perhaps you shouldn’t expect the highest level of service. The staff lives in a house nearby. They work long hours on end before being able to return home to see their families. The bar is a great place to relax and socialise with other guests if you so desire. And bear in mind that the African WiFi connections are not that stable.

Wow! There are 20 luxurious safari tents to sleep in. A great décor, comfy beds with fresh bed linen, air conditioning, a mosquito net and double doors that open onto a small terrace with a superb view. Each tent has its own a fridge, so you can fill it up with your own food and drinks. Despite the fact that the food served here comes from far, you can still enjoy a really good dinner and breakfast in the restaurant, though the choice is limited. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to enjoy the star-filled sky at night.

When making a reservation for a tent at Dolomite Camp, ask if the swimming pool is open at the time of your intended stay. Your children will definitely enjoy using it as it is quite special and the surrounding lounges are very comfortable.

The chalets are widely spread out over the ridge; we recommend a chalet with a view of the waterhole. Some tents even have a private plunge pool.

SOUTH AFRICA, MOSSEL BAY

GONDWANA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE ‘Well, that was a pleasant drive’, says our youngest daughter, who has clearly mastered the art of understatement, when we return to the main lodge of the Gondwana Private Game reserve after a two-hour game drive. It’s now around 8.30 am and we’re perfectly on time for breakfast. The terrace offers splendid views of one of the most stunning landscapes we have ever seen.

The Langeberg mountain range and the Outeniqua mountains are just becoming visible when the last bits of fog disappear from around the mountain tops and we can now see the indigenous ‘Fynbos’ (fine-leaved plants) in every direction of our gaze. Almost at once, we spot a giraffe near the farthest row of fourteen suites built in a style clearly inspired by the traditional Khoi-San style of architecture.

It’s only 6 am when we climb aboard an impressive game vehicle. It’s still rather chilly, but after we wrap ourselves in special thermo ponchos, we hardly notice the cold. Our children are ecstatic. Ready for a big adventure, each has a pair of binoculars around her neck. And a big adventure it is! Travelling at a rapid pace, we try to spot the Big Five, the legendary safari animals: the lion, the elephant, the rhinoceros, the buffalo and the leopard.

“They will never believe us at school” The ride takes us across more than 11,000 hectares of private game reserve. It is soon evident that this is serious game spotting: our guide is very friendly, but also strives to make every effort to ensure that we will be able to see all the wonders of the African landscape. His efforts are rewarded: we encounter steppe buzzards, hippos, waterbucks, zebras and, as a highlight, we enjoy a coffee break against the backdrop of a herd of elephants having their breakfast. With mugs of hot chocolate and a big piece of African ‘grandmother’s cake’ in their hands, our kids can’t take their eyes off the impressive creatures just a few hundred metres away. ‘They will never believe us at school, Dad!’, they say, giving us a big hug. Lions and rhinos we will leave for another day.

Gondwana is located only five hours’ drive from Cape Town and just under half an hour from the charming village of Mossel Bay. The 5-star game reserve has been presented numerous awards, all of which are well-deserved. We have almost never visited such a versatile holiday accommodation. Gondwana is a paradise for families. When we arrive we are immediately served a glass of sparkling wine, and our children some special lemonade. While we register, they are presented a Junior Ranger Passport, fingerprint-taking including.

These ‘passports’ gives children aged 6 - 12 admission to the Junior Rangers Programme. During our stay, our kids learned to identify paw prints, they made botanical discoveries during a special Leaf Hunt and actively studied the life of

the dung beetle. Every day, their last spark of energy was spent swimming in the beautifully situated infinity pool. However, an absolute highlight was realising that Gondwana is truly a ‘free roaming reserve’. The few hundred metres from the lodge to our accommodations must be travelled in our rental car or on foot under supervision of a ranger. This is to ensure that guests do not run into any prey animals. Although chances are small that this will happen and the main lodge is well fenced off, this gave us a tremendous kick. Already on our first night, returning to our accommodation after dinner, we ran into a huge herd of wildebeest foraging for food right in front of our door!

Being restricted to your accommodation or the lodge is by no means a punishment, since both are truly breathtaking. The lodge has a lounge and bar, as well as a terrace and restaurant, furnished in the traditional safari style.

On chilly evenings, the guests are welcome to enjoy a gin & tonic or a mug of steaming tea sitting in front of the enormous open fireplaces, in armchairs that are so comfortable that you never want to get up again.

Couples and families with only one young child generally stay in one of the fourteen suites grouped around the lodge, while bigger families or groups are accommodated in the comfortable 240m2 bush villas. Here an impressive double-volume thatch roof covers an open-plan lounge, a dining and kitchen area and two to four bedrooms. Although breakfast and diner are included, every villa features a fully equipped kitchen. Guests are also invited to fire up the barbecue on the veranda that spans the entire length of the impressive bush villa.

GROOTBOS PRIVATE NATURE RESERVE In the early 1990s Michael en Dorothee Lutzeyer acquired a farm on a stunning plot of land located between the villages of Stanford and Gansbaai. What started as a modest B&B ultimately grew into one of the most highly acclaimed five-star ecologically friendly accommodations in all of South Africa. The name Grootbos, an Afrikaans word meaning ‘Big Forest’, is derived from the nearby ancient indigenous and endangered Milkwood forests.

Just imagine: where else in the world can you sit on a terrace, sipping a cold drink in the shade of a huge parasol while watching whales frolicking about in the distance, spraying jets of water from their blowholes. Even if you’re not fortunate enough to visit Grootbos during these amazing mammals’ migratory season (roughly from November through January) there are plenty of other activities to be assured of an unforgettable stay.

There is so much to do at Grootbos that guests are presented a convenient list of the activities to choose from upon their arrival. The hospitality at Grootbos is unprecedented. Before we know it, our luggage has been unloaded from our car and we are given moist towels to wipe the dust from our travel-stained hands and

faces and chilled water with mint to quench our thirst. While our kids enjoy the children’s games room, we peruse the list of activities. We immediately regret not having booked three times as many nights here. Of course, we want to go horseback riding through the dunes in the morning, followed by a Flower Safari in a 4X4 vehicle later in the afternoon. There is no large game on Grootbos itself, with the exception of the very rare and rarely spotted cape leopard. But the fauna at Grootbos includes antelopes such as steenboks, klipspringers, grey Rheboks, duiker sand bushbucks, as well as countless species of birds, but even more spectacular is the vast array of flora.

The Fynbos contains an astounding 765 different plant species, so it is no surprise that many of the activities at Grootbos focus on botanical discovery. During a truly unique experience, a specialised guide shows us all the miracles of the plant world. Driving in an open-top Land Rover through the spectacular countryside, we regularly stop while the guide tells us more about a certain flower or plant.

The kids listen attentively and gratefully take receipt of several specimens: ‘Look, Dad! They used to use these thorns to sew their clothes together, and if you chew on this leaf your toothache will go away!’ And that was just our first day!

As said, there is no large game, so children can roam about freely through the beautifully landscaped garden. Grootbos features two lodges: the Forest Lodge, which caters primarily to couples, and the Garden Lodge, which was designed to

Located on a hilltop, the Garden Lodge’s open-plan lay-out lends it a spacious yet homelike atmosphere. With only eleven free-standing suites, the reserve exudes an intimate ambiance. It feels almost as if we’re on a family visit. The kids run between the beautiful swimming pool and the large petting zoo, where rabbits, hens and chickens, as well as friendly pigs, reside. The helpful staff at the fully equipped stables adjacent to the area reserved for farm animals caters to professional as well as inexperienced riders of all ages.

Seekers of more thrilling entertainment can even go diving among the white sharks: fortunately, in a cage! We understand that this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. If that’s not enough to impress even the most blasé teenagers, we don’t know what will! Teens can also enjoy quad bike rides or balloon or helicopter flights: sure to get Mum and Dad some very high marks!

The adjacent practically deserted beach is a perfect venue for picnics and long walks. Other interesting excursions include the nearby caves, which were once inhabited by the indigenous population, or specialised bird watching tours.

The breathtaking suites are stylishly furnished with luxurious canopy beds, huge en suite bathrooms, separate lounges with cosy fireplaces and private wooden decks with spectacular panoramic views. After a day of indolent relaxation or crammed with exciting activities, guests at Grootbos are invited to partake of some of the finest contemporary cuisine in all of South Africa. We have rarely enjoyed such good food in such breathtaking surroundings: whether inside the attractively furnished restaurant, outdoors with views of the ocean and the Fynbos, or (as a special treat) in a palisade-enclosed courtyard featuring a traditional South African barbecue with a camp fire and thousands of sparkling lights. While the kids roast marshmallows above the fire, we clink our glasses together to bring out a toast to life. And life is good at Grootbos!

WINDJAMMER BEACH LANDING RESORT The very first thing our kids see when we walk onto the beach in front of the Windjammer Landing Resort is the giant bouncy castle with slide that is floating in the calm sea. Before we can set out to discover the rest of this family resort, we are all in the sea literally screaming with laughter.

While we try to catch our breath on the bouncy castle, we’ve got time to observe the resort and its surroundings from a distance. The resort covers the larger part of a hill that seems to rise straight from the Caribbean Sea. On the beach, a large restaurant with behind it two swimming pools, the lounge and the reception and higher up the hill an extensive range of accommodations.

The beach in front of the resort is up to 500 metres wide, so even when it is crowded, you can always find a free spot. On the crescent-shaped beach situated on the tranquil shores of Labrelotte Bay, there are all kinds of different water sport activities available. The good thing is, some of these activities, such as snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing and kayaking, are for free. Against payment, you can also go waterskiing, wakeboarding, diving and kneeboarding.

A throng of teens waits in a state of great excitement on the jetty until it’s his or her turn to show off the best water ski moves.

A sporty family will have the time of their lives here with all these water sports and as an extra bonus it’s only a few minutes’ drive to a magnificent 18-hole golf course. Moreover, the resort has two tennis courts with a resident tennis pro who is happy to help you improve your tennis skills as well as a well-equipped fitness centre. But don’t be put off by the whole range of sporting possibilities because it is just as fine to do nothing at all. In the brand-new spa, for example, that measures no less than 600 m2 and where you can choose from a variety of treatments and even get yoga lessons.

Although the Windjammer Landing Resort is known as a child friendly destination, it is also a great place for couples. The resort is set up in such a way that there is ample space for many a private moment. Here, you won’t meet any bored or loitering children as they are either busy with the various water sports or – when they are younger or tired of swimming – at the Jacqout Fun Club.

The hotel rooms and suites are perfectly suited for one or two persons. Almost all of the rooms have a private balcony or terrace with a view of the sea. The rooms are decorated with calming colours and comfy furniture. It remains to be seen whether you will spend much time in here – apart from sleeping.

The restaurant Dragonfly serves Caribbean cuisine and every Friday organises its renowned BBQ. Or, enjoy your dinner at Papa Don’s Taverna, the intimate Mediterranean-style tavern. When the children are lying flat out with exhaustion in their beds, perhaps under the watchful eye of a babysitter, you can enjoy a romantic moment with a gourmet dinner for two at the Upper Deck.

Embers and the beach shack Jammer’s are casual seaside restaurants and both perfect for a quick snack, but also the place for a delicious ice cream or a cocktail in the late afternoon. Or, if you prefer so, earlier in the day. After all, this is your holiday! NIKOI PRIVATE ISLAND ”Welcome to your private island!”, with a big smile we are helped out of the speed boat. While our luggage quickly disappears into an oldfashioned cargo bike, we take in the ‘picture postcard scenery’ that stretches out before our eyes. A luscious jungle with gigantic granite boulders, lying as if thrown there personally by a giant’s hand and – as a golden rim – a white sandy beach to make the picture complete.

All this, only 10 kilometres off the Indonesian island of Bintan.

“Mum and Dad, are there any pirates here?”, without waiting for an answer, our kids run on to the island that we can call our own for the entire week. Well, almost our own. Apart from the beach house where we will be staying, there are another 14 similar accommodations. All of them built from local drift wood and with the typical authentic so-called alang-alang roofs that are made from a sort of long blady grass. There are 30 guests at the most, mainly from Singapore, who undertake the 2.5-hour journey to this paradise island. Although there are also guests who, like us, crossed half the world for a real Robinson Crusoe experience.

Yet, Robinson was a long way from the level of comfort which is lavished on us this day and age. As it is, Nikoi is all about ‘bare feet luxury’. For the entire week, we dip our toes in the soft sand. Here, it’s all about getting back to nature and

being at one with the environment. Precisely that was the vision of a group of expats who – not happy with the level of comfort of the average family accommodation – started building their own dream holiday destination. And they succeeded alright as Nikoi Island ticks all the right boxes. For a start, it has an intimate atmosphere. The beach houses are set on 5 hectares of land; the remaining 10 hectares is jungle, so there is plenty of space to find a spot for some undisturbed relaxing.

Then again, action is never far away. At Nikoi Island, no one gets the chance to get bored – not even for a second. Guests can pick from a whole range of water sport activities: kayaking, windsurfing, snorkelling, diving, sailing, etc. There are also two tennis and croquet courts, guests can go rock climbing and, each evening, the staff plays a game of soccer and they like for guests to team up with them. There is no tight activities schedule and you just decide for yourself to do what and when. The same can be said of the informal kids club. Every morning, we walk over to the hut; a simple covered construction with hammocks and bean bag chairs. Behind it, a tree house and a self-built climbing track. In the morning, a paper on a pole near the hut announces the activities for the day. For example, woodworking, jumping off the jetty, fishing, capture the flag, often a treasure hunt at the end of the day and, after dinner, roasting marshmallows over an impressively large campfire followed by a movie. The activities are very easygoing; children can hop-on and hop-off whenever and as much as they like.

And so the days go by in total bliss. We have so much fun with swimming, snorkelling and fishing, that it takes us two whole days before we ‘discover’ the swimming pool.

It takes quite a walk through the jungle; the 30-metre high native Banyan trees are a sight in themselves. The pool, spectacularly situated on the north-eastern part of the island, is picture perfect. As if it were carved out of the rocks, it rises high above the South China Sea. There is also a kiddy pool and a bar where friendly bartenders mix strong cocktails or a cappuccino. The spa is next doors; in a rustic tent on the beach, guests can get the whole range of massages and treatments – in case you don’t already feel relaxed enough.

Amidst all this beauty is our personal retreat: a two-bedroom beach house.

It comes out on the beach, just like all the other houses. The living room is open on all sides; this is quite refreshing as the average outside temperature is 30˚ Celsius. Ceiling fans also provide cooling and there is always a nice breeze from the sea. Upstairs, the master bedroom gives a view straight from your bed of fishermen in their traditional boats passing. Both bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom and our house even has a small room with a bunk bed. Apart from this, there are also one- and three-bedroom beach houses. Don’t expect any air conditioning and marble bathrooms;, but you’ll find everything you reasonably need and it is all very functional and nicely decorated indeed.

One of the highlights of our stay are the meals. It all starts with the location of both restaurants. One for couples and the other for families, the open-sided restaurants are right on the beach and offer stunning views of the sea. While the sand plays with our toes, ceiling fans offer a refreshing breeze. The restaurants serve set meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The menu is put up on a blackboard – you can choose and if something is not to your liking, they simply change it for you. Or, if you are in for something really special, it is possible to arrange a private dinner on one of the nearby deserted islands.

The ‘cool’ large open reception area with its vertical gardens; modern art display and a vintage VW Kombi shuttle van give the hotel an arty look. We instantly fall in love with it and we equally liked the fresh coffee made by one of the in-house baristas.

As for the rooms and suites, they are all large, spacious and modern with amazing, ultra-comfortable bathrooms, and you will see attention to detail in every room. ALILA VILLAS ULUWATU Upon arrival at this unique 5-star hotel on the island of Bali, practically everyone gets out his smartphone to take a photo. The one-of-a-kind design and location of Alila Villas Uluwatu make it one of the most photographed hotels on Instagram.

This experience had already begun earlier; right after making the reservation, we received an extensive questionnaire on which we could indicate the preferences of every member of our family. What films do the children like?

Activities? Favourite magazines, music? Type of pillow? And so on. If this isn’t your idea of a unique experience, then we don’t know what is.

It all starts with the way we are welcomed at the airport. At the end of the passenger bridge, our friendly host awaits our arrival. He swiftly takes us to the luggage belt and customs before getting us into a waiting SUV. During the 45-minute ride to the hotel, the chauffeur informs us of where to go on the island.

Then, the moment of arriving at the hotel. The main building seems to appear out of nowhere. Members of the staff stand ready to welcome us and, as we walk into the lobby, our luggage is taken over by invisible hands. The view is nothing less than spectacular. The hotel is situated on an elevated plateau, more than 100 metres above sea level with a 180-degree view of the ocean.

“After having expanded our Instagram account, it’s time to admire our villa” The complex has a serene and minimalistic character. The terrain reminds us of terraced rice paddies. Thanks to the various levels, the 61 individual, open-plan villas lay well hidden, thus offering absolute privacy. Everywhere you look, water flows into shallow ponds and streams – just like a real rice paddy. Lava stones fill up these waters and also serve as roofing for the villas. It is not only decorative, but also eco-conscious as the lava absorbs the warmth of the sun and spreads this same warmth when it gets colder. The villas are beautifully designed and constructed from white natural stone in combination with wood and a variety of green ferns and grasses.

Our host – every guest has the luxury of a 24-hour butler – takes us to an enormous 3-bedroom villa. Our mouths fall wide open when we enter the villa.

It seems carved out of a rock. The stairs come out onto a long hallway with access to three bedrooms, a kitchen and a private fitness and massage room. When we walk around the corner we see the living room on our right and, as an absolute highlight, our private 15-metre long infinity pool stretching out to the other side of the three bedrooms. Our kids turn quiet: “Who else will swim here?”.

The villas have one up to four bedrooms and have the same modern design as the rest of the hotel with wonderful king-size beds (and the pillows we specified in the questionnaire) and so on. We are rather blown away by it all. Walking around in our villa, we hear familiar music, and yes: it’s our favourite band. When we take

Although it is a fairly serious and stylish 5-star hotel, you’ll find relatively many families. The staff does its utmost to please even the youngest of guests. There is no kids club. Still, the hotel staff is ever so willing to organise all kinds of activities. At the suggestion of our host, our kids joined a painting workshop and when we asked for a swim ring, they brought an enormous inflatable swan.

There is also a whole range of activities for adults. Here as well, the host is more than helpful. For a start, the gym has all the equipment needed to keep fit. We must say, a fit shape is more than welcome if you choose to walk to the beach down under by using the stairs next to the cliff-edge cabana. To get the picture: there are literally hundreds of steps. There are no facilities on the beach and it is impossible to swim there, but it is a wonderful spot to collect shells and to enjoy the wild waves. Further, it is only a 15-minute ride to the famous Uluwatu Temple.

Every day at sunset, you can watch a dance performance. Although it attracts a lot of people, it is certainly worth a visit. And what to think of all those other activities whether or not guided by the host: mountain biking through the rice paddies, visiting other temples or an artisan, climbing a volcano, going to lessknown and thus very quiet beaches, a cooking class that includes a visit to the local market with the chef of restaurant Cire, and so forth.

Yes, it is very expensive * indeed, but it is all highquality. And the two restaurants are reasonably priced. That’s quite pleasant, as there is no alternative nearby.

A hallucinating combination of a minimalistic design with a touch of retro combined with a large dose of pop art and finished off with futuristic elements. Let’s say, Tintin meets Philippe Starck meets Tom Dixon meets The Pink Panther.

Our kids are dazzled by the playfulness of this extraordinary 5-star hotel just like we are impressed by the hotel’s design. This took some serious thinking! The primary colours are green, yellow, red and blue. We recognise some elements from Mondrian and from popular games like Rubik’s Cube, Monopoly and Lego.

Luckily, the hotel is extremely child friendly, so it’s no problem at all to climb on the giant Lego bricks piled up in the corridors.

Luna2 studiotel is situated nearby the centre of Seminyak, a lively and hip place.

It offers a fine selection of shops, tasty restaurants, nightlife entertainment and a sandy beach. Obviously, this combination attracts a constant flow of visitors.

Although once inside the walls of this design hotel, you won’t notice any of this.

Both the design and the lack of knick-knacks give the hotel an air of calm and even a sleek feel. One of the highlights of our stay, especially for the kids, is the

Not a standard white basin, but a real piece of art with a Mondrian mosaic of yellow, red, blue and green on the bottom and on a very high wall at the end some great pop art. For us, the most divine day beds to dream away on, the possibility of having a poolside massage or order something tasty from the Detox & Retox menu with a delicious variety of finger food, fresh juices, smoothies and cocktails.

Another highlight is the ultra-comfy 16-seat cinema in the hotel’s basement.

The cinema has two showings per day; a children’s film in the afternoon and a film for grown-ups in the evening. And be honest, what can beat a private cinema? What’s more, with one push on the button, you can order fizzy drinks and popcorn. The Groovy Pop! lounge bar is also situated in the basement. When the children are sound asleep, parents can unwind here with a drink and dance the night away to trendy beats. So it is good to know that a babysitter can easily be arranged. Next to the lounge bar, a large glass wall offers a glimpse of an enormous wine supply. Wine lovers can choose from no less than 150 labels.

Leave the basement by going up the spiral staircase and you’ll end up in the award-winning Orbit restaurant. The restaurant seats only 20 diners and is thus very intimate indeed. Its retro style from the 1950s/1960s with a touch of space futurism is entirely in line with the rest of the hotel’s design. The restaurant also serves breakfast in the morning. Instead of a kids club, the hotel came up with something else. Each family can make use of a kid’s coordinator for a maximum of 2 hours a day. A sweet lady entertains the children with lots of fun activities. Playing games, arts & crafts workshops, painting and more. If the children prefer to play on their own, it is perfectly alright to borrow the toys.

Not that there is nothing to do outside the hotel. Seminyak and its surroundings have much to offer. Just a few steps from the hotel, there are various stalls on the beach where you can rent surfboards and bodyboards. Luna2 studiotel guests receive complimentary membership to Canggu Club, Bali’s premier recreational club, which has a gym, 25m pool, indoor tennis courts, playing field, waterpark, ‘Bounce’ trampoline centre and a toddlers ‘Cubby House’ play room. Or what about riding an elephant in the national park, a clown workshop in a circus school, mountain biking, a zip wire ride, dune buggy racing, a cooking class by a professional chef and so on?

The hotel offers a daily activity programme. But make no mistake, it’s certainly not a ‘kid’s programme’ as the majority of hotel guests are adults. This said our kids can easily join in with most of the activities.

If you’re into diving or snorkelling, you can visit the nearby Gili Islands, an easy day trip from Jeeva Klui. It is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive.

The staff are happy to coordinate trips and organise transportation for guests, helping you determine the appropriate experience level and select a suitable diving company – most of them are even willing to pick you up right from the hotel’s beach.

Kayaks can be rented at Cafe Paradiso, a short walk up the beach from the nearby sister resort Jeeva Santai (adults-only). Or, opt for a more traditional experience by going on an Indonesian fishing boat with local guides. Experienced and novice surfers alike flock to Indonesia’s Lombok coast for its full range of surf-able waves. The nearby sister resort Jeeva Santai on Mangsit beach offers lots of surfing activities.

SHANGRI-LA’S RASA SENTOSA The location is unique; only a 15-minute drive from the city centre, directly situated on the beach and surrounded by immensely tall palm trees. Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa is the only hotel in Singapore that offers this golden combination.

One minute we drive past Singapore’s skyscrapers, the next we cross a bridge that gives us access to Sentosa Island. It doesn’t take long before the kids catch a glimpse of a giant rollercoaster: “Look Dad, this hotel even has its own amusement park!” Almost right. The rollercoaster is part of Southeast Asia’s first Universal Studios that is only a stone throw’s away from the hotel. The island is also home to S.E.A. Aquarium, KidZania Singapore, MOSH!, iFly and Mega Adventure Park. Despite this large-scale entertainment, the island is surprisingly enough also the perfect place for nature lovers and has a variety of nature trails.

Still, why should you leave the 5-star resort in the first place? What to think of the Cool Zone, one of Singapore’s largest kids clubs. An enormous space divided into units for the various age groups with all kinds of toys, an indoor slide, play stations, air hockey and an art studio for arts & crafts. When we are accompanied to one of the bars for a welcome cocktail, we have a great view of the resort from the bar’s terrace. “Water slides!”, it’s only then that the kids realise that there is

The pool with its two outdoor jacuzzis is one of the largest free-form swimming pools in Singapore.

With all of the above-mentioned facilities, the resort is not your average small and intimate resort. Although it is fairly crowded during the summer holidays, its vastness makes sure it doesn’t feel crowded at all. Even at the busiest time of day, there are enough day pool beds available and if you want to have the oversized pool all to yourself, it’s best to take a dip at the beginning of the evening when most families are preparing for dinner.

Apart from the broad range of entertainment options, there is also a wide choice of culinary delights. In the main building, that seems to enfold the garden like an arch, are various bars and restaurants. Restaurant Casserole, for example, if you want to indulge yourself in the a la carte options from the Southeast Asian, Moroccan, Indian and Western cuisine. Or enjoy one of the buffets at the Silver Shell Cafe with a live cooking extravaganza every evening where the chefs prepare the most delicious dishes right before your very eyes. The all-day-dining outlet presents delicious excitement for children with its dedicated and scaledto-height children’s buffet section, which is enticingly arrayed with a wide

It only takes a couple of minutes to walk from the main building to the beachfront restaurant Trapizza that serves the best pizzas and pastas. It remains to be seen whether there are any hungry mouths to be fed, as our kids soon discover the Siloso Beach Bar; because what’s more fun than to whoosh down the slides into the swimming pool and then swim on to the pool bar for a large bucket of popcorn.

The Flying Trapeze is worth mentioning: as if they are true circus artists, daredevils show their tricks on a trapeze that is metres high off the ground.

Luckily, there is a large safety net. There’s also lots to do on the resort’s private beach, such as volleyball, soccer, frisbee, cricket, golf and tennis. And above this all, water sports enthusiasts can rent non-motorised water sports equipment, such as kayaks and paddle boats for some beach fun. If you wish for your energy level to get back up again after all these exciting activities, you can always go to CHI, the spa. A place to enjoy a massage or one of the many body and face treatments without having the children around. In Chinese philosophy, “chi” or “qi” is the universal life force that governs well-being and personal vitality. For people to maintain good health, it is believed that “chi” must flow freely within the body.

As mentioned above, the hotel is quite large; there are no less than 454 rooms.

We are staying in the so-called Deluxe Sea View Suite with, needless to say, a view of the beach and the South China Sea. In the distance, a great number of large cargo vessels that patiently await their turn to be allowed to enter the port. Very surreal indeed. The two-bedroom suite offers enough privacy and in the evening, when the kids are asleep, we enjoy a drink on the roof terrace.

If you want to immerse yourself in absolute luxury, then choose the Sentosa Suite on the top floor where you can play hide-and-seek with your roommates.

THAILAND, CHIANG MAI

THE DHARA DEVI CHIANG MAI “Yay, we are going to see another temple!” our eldest daughter exclaims when we reach the gate of The Dhara Dhevi resort. After almost three months in Thailand, we still don’t suffer – not the kids anyway – from temple fatigue. They just can’t seem to get enough of it while we are ready to try something new as we secretly whisper to each other.

The mix-up is understandable as this 60-acre resort is built in the local Lanna-style with some colonial influences. It resembles a palace, or in the minds of our kids: a temple. During our stay, a golf cart takes us everywhere we want to go. No luxury, if you take the sheer vastness of the grounds into account.

The word luxury can also be applied to the various types of accommodations.

Even the smallest suite, of which there are 54 in total, measures no less than 80 m2. For even more space, there are 64 villas whereas the 5 residencies are completely out of this world. Everywhere you look, wooden doors, refined furniture, hand-made beds and man-size glass doors that open up to equally large private terraces. The two bedroom suites are decorated in the Chinese style with bathrooms where you can relax in the deep, marble soaking tub.

“A true children’s paradise awaits us”

During our tour around the resort, our kids marvel at the unique scene unfolding around us. Simply everything is done to perfection. Just the moment we begin to fear that this is all quite a grown-up affair, we make a stop at the kids club.

Inconspicuously located in one of the colonial buildings, a true children’s paradise awaits us. Despite the language barrier, there is an instant click between the kids and the lovely staff. Within minutes of arrival, the kids are painting a Thai fan with their tongues sticking out: “Mum and Dad, you can go now, we want to stay here!”

For us a golden opportunity to discover the culinary competencies of The Dhara Dhevi. To be short: even the greatest food lover will be satisfied. The only thing is that you have to book a stay of at least more than one week as there are no less than ten places to enjoy a meal! Breakfast and Sunday brunch for example are served in the spacious Akaligo, Sanskrit for timeless. Surrounded by palm trees and replicas of traditional Lanna buildings, guests can enjoy opulent buffets while sampling a view of the gardens through the glass façade.

Restaurant Fujian is located in an astonishingly beautiful replica of a ChinesePortuguese colonial house from the mid-19th century. And take it from us: their Peking duck is delicious. Or enjoy your dinner at Farang Ses, one of the best French restaurants in Thailand and local dishes are served at Le Grand Lanna

“There is probably no other place in Northern Thailand with so many top restaurants” where the food is accompanied by an hour-long live song and dance performance.

Whoever wants to go for a snack, there is a deli as well as a variety of bars, including one next to the common swimming pool, and there are several private dining rooms. The last one is a great way to surprise your partner with a romantic dinner for two while the babysitter looks after the children.

Already impressed by the range of culinary options, we nearly faint as we enter the 3,000 m2 �pa. Wherever we look, there are ornaments and other sorts of wood carvings and paintings with Buddhist motifs. More than 150 artisans from the neighbouring country of Myanmar worked on it for 3 and a half years and put their heart and soul into it. Amidst all this splendour, there is an extensive menu of spa and wellness treatments. They also offer a comprehensive range of yoga lessons including yoga for children.

As far as the activities are concerned, this is only the beginning. What about a multi-day cookery class where you learn the tricks and tips of the Thai cuisine, or a basket weaving workshop, rice paper painting, rice planting, making herbal compresses, a massage course, or wood crafting in the Art & Crafts Centre?

Most of these activities are also offered to the younger guests at the Lanna kids club. Active guests can follow an introductory course Thai boxing or rent mountain bikes and explore the surroundings.

For guests who just want their peace and quiet, choose a book from the well-filled library and relax at the common pool. Oh yes, don’t forget to make a stroll to the in-house open-air shopping centre Kad Dhara. With over 20 shops, you will surely find the hand-made souvenir of your choice.

Active families can go on a guided tour in the nearby mountains. It is even possible to make a trip to the Golden Triangle at the intersection of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. Or, visit the elephant camp in Chiang Dao for a very personal encounter with these exceptional creatures.

EPILOGUE For most people, until recently, going on a holiday was completely out of their league. Grandpa and grandma never went any farther than 20 kilometres outside their home town. The generation of our parents were the first to take day trips by car. It wasn’t until the 70s that people started to go on holiday once a year. Today, many people frequently organise a getaway – all year round.

We are thus very grateful to live in this day and age and have the possibility to go holidaying on a regular basis. For this book we travelled far and wide in search of great experiences, as well as beauty and style. By doing so, we discovered a new type of luxury, which is all about unbridled fantasy, boundless imagination and combining the most diverse of things. It’s not about clichés or trends, nor about bling bling, larger, more expensive or more exclusive.

The new luxury is not bound by rules; this would only crush creativity. Instead, the emphasis is on a revaluation of history and romance and in particular on the details that add a touch of fun to a destination. We find luxury stylish when it doesn’t shout, but whispers. Timeless and full of imagination. With an eye for the genuine, the original and the sheer craftsmanship.

In a world full of change, we also see that freedom, safety and health have become a new and priceless luxury. Even more so, time is, as we described in our editorial, getting ever so scarce and therefore becoming more of a luxury than ever – just like personal attention. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the good things in life, especially when these are made with attention and appreciation of the environment.
