IN TIMES OF GIVING, COMMUNITY GENEROSITY REMAINS A CONSTANT This summer, a critical piece of information headlined Giving USA’s annual report on charitable trends. After two years of record-breaking giving, charitable contributions declined 10.5% adjusted for inflation in 2022, totaling just under $500 billion. This decrease would be a significant red metric on almost any dashboard.

Working in philanthropy, my team and I see daily the pressing needs across communities. We see needs related to rising healthcare and housing costs, student access to emotional support and extracurriculars, support for increased mental and behavioral health issues, concerns about our environment, and many other areas. It can feel like the need will always outpace the resources available to address intractable challenges. The ROMANITA HAIRSTON CEO OF THE M.J. MURDOCK idea that support may scale back in the face of this persistent CHARITABLE TRUST demand can feel daunting.

As someone who deeply cares about my neighbors, near and far, and as a member of the community service ecosystem, it is my heartfelt desire to see more investment in the common good, not less. So, it is essential to acknowledge the very real implications of this report while also considering this news in a broader context.

Data shows that, in 40 years, charitable giving has only decreased year-over-year four times, – 1987, 2008, 2009, 2022. So, this trend, while disappointing, is part of a predictable pattern. We would all like to see giving increase exponentially every year. While it was not the case this year, we can find some solace in the broader trends around generosity, which are greatly encouraging.

And despite challenging economic headwinds, Americans still contributed about a half trillion dollars to those in need. Additionally, past trends suggest this will likely be a temporary decrease in giving.

We must also acknowledge that the nonprofit sector’s work typically becomes more difficult in challenging economic periods. We often see needs rise as contributions decline. No single organization or individual can address this gap, and it is critically important to ensure we don’t diminish the very real obstacles that may lie ahead. We can and do hope that the neighbors, businesses, and organizations that make up our community’s ecosystem will continue to invest in those who serve the common good. We move forward when that ecosystem is active and engaged. We can shift concerning indicators and trends into encouraging ones.

This will require us to embrace this red metric, lean into it, and discover how to overcome it.

My team is working to do this as it relates to the work of the Trust. Every quarter we examine our progress toward several business goals designed to drive impact across the sectors we serve. Each metric is marked green, yellow, or red based on its status.

Red metrics can be intimidating to leaders, funders, and donors. We are often trained to look for positive trends, impact, and/or growth. In philanthropy and community service, we often meet needs and address challenges that don’t make it possible to always run in the green. This is why I encourage my team to step back and consider those red metrics on a broader scale. Often, when we lean into the analysis and seek to understand, we identify ways to make the metrics meaningful, to take action, and to move positive progress.

I hope those who share our vision to see our region flourish will consider the larger picture and our community’s needs. I hope we will all dig a bit deeper in support of our region and remember this need as we approach the fall season of giving. We can all play a role in helping ensure that every individual and family in our region can thrive.

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT: NATIONAL WOMEN’S COALITION

AGAINST VIOLENCE & EXPLOITATION National Women’s Coalition Against Violence & Exploitation (NWCAVE), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in downtown Vancouver, was established by Michelle Bart and Carolyn Pillsbury. The organization, which was 100% volunteer run until last year, aims to inform, educate, and prevent violence and exploitation, while actively advocating for justice for the victims of crime or injustice.

The organization is licensed in Oregon, Washington, Arizona, and California and has people on the ground in each state working to help people and advocate for justice.

NWCAVE’s mission is simple: to live in a world without violence. The organization works to hold people accountable, as to ensure their clients get the justice that they deserve. To do this, they specialize in media and continue to use the media, social media, and technology to keep faces, cases, and advocacy in the public eye. Some of their notable coalition partners include Washington State University Vancouver, Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, YWCA Clark County, Crittenton, and more.

The organization has served thousands of people in the last 13 years.

Through its Advocacy Center for Justice, NWCAVE currently has 11 active cases, representing victims of crime and murder. NWCAVE’s podcast ‘Spotlight for Justice’ has a listener base of 40,000 and their Dignity Clothing Program has provided new clothing to thousands in the last year. The organization is also known for its support in finding missing children. Under the direction of the missing persons support continued page 7

services team, they help families and law enforcement in the search, rescue, and recovery efforts for missing people. Furthermore, NWCAVE has contributed over $20,000 to its coalition partners and the organization’s education and training divisions train hundreds of people every year.

There’s no doubt about it: the work that NWCAVE is doing is life-changing for families and individuals all over the country. Bart, president and founder of the organization, explains more about its early operations and how it has grown over the years.

“We began NWCAT (Northwest Conference Against Trafficking) in 2010 and we had aimed to raise awareness about trafficking in our backyard with an emphasis of raising money to build shelters for trafficked survivors, and as time went on, we decided it was a better endeavor for us to try to slow down trafficking. Thus, we created our anti-violence nonprofit, NWCAVE. Today, we have one part-time employee and 10 board/ leadership volunteers. NWCAVE is unique because we think outside the box, and we don’t repeat and compete with other agencies. Instead, we partner with them to make an even bigger impact on our community.”

While their approach has been successful, the organization is focusing on increasing their funding and revenue so they can continue doing what they do best: promote a more civilized society free of violence, while advocating for and empowering victims to get the justice they deserve.

“Almost 80% of our donations come from third parties and online donations,” Bart said. “Most donors are not from Clark County yet 95% of all our programs and services benefit Clark County and its residents. If more funding came via local donors, we would double our ability to provide vital services to our community, more so than we are already doing. Despite not winning grants like many of our partners, our services must continue, and we never stop being there for the clients and the community.”

Looking ahead, NWCAVE will be involved in a variety of local events, such as the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims in Esther Short Park at the end of September and the Women’s Festival in 2024.

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT: FRIENDS OF THE CARPENTER THE ORGANIZATION WAS FOUNDED TO PROVIDE A MORE WHOLISTIC APPROACH TO MEETING THE NEEDS OF HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS

BY JOANNA YORKE-PAYNE FOR THE VBJ After first being founded in 1998 in the garage of Duane and Julie Sich, Friends of the Carpenter – a faith-based nonprofit day shelter – has grown from that garage to an 18,000-square-foot facility in west Vancouver.

Tod Thayer, executive director at Friends of the Carpenter, said that at the time of the organization’s founding, Duane Sich was

an assistant pastor at First Presbyterian Church. Thayer said the nonprofit was founded to provide a more wholistic approach to meeting the needs of homeless individuals and to provide the fellowship, community, safety and a sense of belonging that churches were, because of limited resources, struggling with.

Sich wanted to partner with individuals, churches, businesses and the community at large to provide “intentional community” for individuals in a safe, supportive and productive environment where they could gather, enjoy activities, receive services and referrals to other nonprofits, and be loved and honored for who they uniquely are.

Since 2004, Thayer said Friends of the Carpenter has been housed in an 18,000-square-foot warehouse at 1600 W. 20th St., in Vancouver. The organization provides several key services – they provide a safe and supportive structure in their day shelter where people can come off the street to get a hot cup of noodles, coffee or tea, juice, water, and a snack. They also provide showers and laundry services a couple of days each week, and the organization partners with Partners In Careers (PIC) to procontinued page 10

vide employment training to people with barriers to employment.

In addition, Friends of the Carpenter trains individuals for 9-12 months in carpentry, woodworking, custodial/janitorial, warehousing, administrative/office management and customer service.

“We can and have hired three full-time employees, two who were homeless prior to hire and are now in stable employment, stable housing and thriving,” Thayer said.

Friends of the Carpenter also provides hats, underwear, socks and gloves to individuals throughout the year, but particularly in the fall and winter.

“We’ve grown from a focus primarily based on serving individuals who are homeless to also serving people who are low-income at risk of homelessness, people with disabilities, seniors in isolation/poverty, and at-risk or disabled youth,” Thayer said.

“We continue to be a community for artists, woodworkers, creatives, DIY enthusiasts and makers who enjoy making beautiful art with wood. We serve about 25-40 people each day, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. We now partner with approximately 20-25 nonprofits and churches to provide services and referrals to our treasured guests.”

Some of the activities that Friends of the Carpenter offers include daily devotions, a sewing life skill class, community bingo, art and more. They also work on self-directed projects or group projects such as bird houses, planter boxes, seasonal decorations, garden items, cutting boards and more.

“Ultimately, whatever we do … we do to create a loving positive community environment for vulnerable marginalized people while fostering an artistic and thriving community of woodworkers, hobbyists, makers, crafters and DIY enthusiasts,” Thayer said.

Thayer said that some of the biggest obstacles Friends of the Carpenter has faced over the last several years include having to be closed for 16 months during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thayer came on as the organization’s executive director on May 3, 2021, and reopened the warehouse on June 7, 2021. Eight weeks later, Friends of the Carpenter experienced an electrical fire that closed the warehouse for another four months and did $250,000 in damage.

“The biggest obstacle has been building momentum and regaining our volunteer base, adequate staffing and building our programs,” he said. “Fortunately, we were able to repair the damage, completely remodel our building in addition to the repair, and we added the shower and laundry program/service. We are

almost back to preCOVID levels of attendance and have built a significant reserve. However, I’m still working with fewer staff and volunteers than before COVID.” Thayer said that as they have noticed a significant increase in the number of homeless individuals in Vancouver, they see new faces coming to the center all the time. NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT: ROCKSOLID COMMUNITY TEEN CENTER ROCKSOLID OFFERS AREA TEENS A PLACE TO HANG OUT AFTER SCHOOL WHERE THEY CAN PARTICIPATE IN A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES

BY JOANNA YORKE-PAYNE FOR THE VBJ What started out as a vision and dream more than 21 years ago of a man named Gene Foster, who thought local youth needed a safe place to hang out after school because there was little for middle and high schoolers to do to keep them from risky behaviors, became a reality in 2002 when Rocksolid Community Teen Center opened its doors to the Clark County area community. The organization was founded by Foster and several other founding families, including Kari Otos and Lori Lindberg, to name a few.

Marcy Sprecher, executive director at Rocksolid, said that students who come to the teen center can choose from a variety of activities that are supervised by staff and caring adult mentors. Rocksolid’s activities emphasize building healthy relations in life skills, business skills, good homework habits, leadership skills, healthy eating, sports, cultural enrichment, the arts and community service.

“Our program is bringing youth together from all over Clark County, including 10 different schools just in the Battle Ground and Hockinson districts,” Sprecher said. “We take the students on community service projects, teach them life skills, and expose them to unique opportunities, mentorships and friendships they may not have been made known to otherwise.”

Rocksolid has seen its fair share of challenges over the years, and Sprecher said the organization’s toughest times were in their early grassroot stages and most recently during COVID. However, in both cases, she said they were able to overcome challenges by powering through and continuing to offer their pro-

gram to youth. With the support of the community, she said they were able to transform their in-person program to a virtual and porch-drop program, and connect via Zoom meetings several times a week, for 18 months.

“This uncertain time made us stronger as an organization and connected our kids (and adults) on a whole new level,” Sprecher said.

Over the last 21 years of its existence, Sprecher said that Rocksolid has grown in “leaps and bounds.”

“Through the years we have grown from eight registered youth to over 100,” she said. “The number of our staff and volunteers have doubled, attributed to the need of a productive, impactful program. Rocksolid hosts two ‘Teen Takeover’ events per year, one in the spring and one in the fall. This is a safe, supervised event where youth are provided entertainment, food, prizes and much more, and because of the difference we are making in the lives of youth, donors and parents, they are spreading the word that we are a great organization to be a part of.”

Rocksolid relies on the support of their generous community donors, grants and other fundraisers throughout the year, including their biggest sustaining annual fundraiser, the “Lucky Shamrock Auction,” in March. Sprecher said they are grateful to the community who believe in the work the organization is doing with the kids.

Sprecher said the future for Rocksolid will continue to be strong and impactful. She said they are always looking for ways to broaden the scope in finding new opportunities that will bring continued page 13

value to Rocksolid’s program. For example, bringing in guest speakers to talk to the teens about culture enrichment, the trades mental health and wellness, are just a few program highlights they are working on.

“We are also hearing the need for more afterschool programs from concerned individuals around our county and have been approached on several occasions to share how we have been such a success in North Clark County,” Sprecher said. “Part of our strategic planning process will include possible expansion/franchising due to the large need with mental health and our isolated youth. We want to help in keeping kids safe, healthy, caring and responsible citizens giving back to their community.”

LSW ARCHITECTS OFFERS DESIGN COMISSION INTERNSHIP TO AREA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO DATE, THE PROGRAM HAS PROVIDED INTERNSHIPS TO MORE THAN 160 STUDENTS IN EIGHT DIFFERENT SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS SW WASHINGTON

BY JOANNA YORKE-PAYNE FOR THE VBJ Design CoMission, a 90-hour unpaid internship offered by LSW Architects to high school students in Southwest Washington, was first founded in 2014 with the mission to provide authentic professional experiences for students exploring architecture and design.

“The reality is, these kinds of opportunities are rare for aspiring designers, often resulting in students needing to commit to higher education programs before getting a taste of what a career in design looks like,” said Kyle Rogers, associate at LSW and director of Design CoMission. “As leaders in educational design, continued page 15

LSW not only had the heart to support student learning, but the knowledge and tools to make it a reality.”

Design CoMission is a 90-hour unpaid professional internship in which LSW brings 12 students per semester from across Southwest Washington to LSW’s office and mentors them through the design process, exposing them to career opportunities in the architecture, engineering and construction industry. Rogers said it is a collaborative experience with interns working as a team to envision and design real projects with real clients, gaining technical skills and professional experience along the way.

“We have course articulation with several district’s WBL programs allowing pathways for course credit, and offer scholarships, career pathway mentorship and resume-building support,” Rogers said.

To date, Rogers said that LSW has provided internships to more than 160 students in eight different school districts across Southwest Washington. Since implementing scholarships in 2018, he said they have provided $15,000 in scholarships to students pursuing higher education. Starting this year, Rogers said

LSW has partnered with the Southwest Washington Community Foundation, and has set up a fund that will now offer $10,000 in scholarships annually.

Design CoMission interns focus their creativity on addressing the needs of the Clark County community and interns work to help design local projects, including the Vancouver Social Historic Center, The Hub, the WSU Maker Space and more.

“In our mentorship, we prioritize the concept of unique ability and work with each individual intern to help them identify their passions and how their natural gifts and talents can be leveraged to provide value and impact their communities,” Rogers said.

“Of course, we love to see students go on to pursue architecture or other forms of design; however, some of the most encouraging feedback we’ve received are from students who decided to explore other careers, noting that their experience with Design CoMission was still valuable to help them make informed decisions about their future – following their unique abilities and not the status quo.”

NONPROFIT SPOTLIGHT: NATIVE ARTS & CULTURES FOUNDATION THE FOUNDATION WAS FOUNDED TO ADVANCE EQUITY AND CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE, FOCUSING ON THE POWER OF ARTS AND COLLABORATION

BY JOANNA YORKE-PAYNE FOR THE VBJ In response to the urgent need to support and promote Native arts and culture bearers, the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation was founded in 2007.

According to the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation website, in the early 2000s, the Ford Foundation responded to the call for a national, Native-led resource for Native artists and organizations by engaging in a deep consultative process. The study explored the creation of a new philanthropic resource to support the diverse arts and cultures of American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian communities. A feasibility study determined that developing a Native-led, Native-partnering organization to direct critically needed support to Native American artists and communities was not only achievable, but essential.

After research determined this, the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation was created.

The Native Arts & Cultures Foundation’s new headquarters is now in the Yale Union Laundry building in Portland, Ore., a building that the Foundation received as an act of Rematriation in 2020. The historic building was renamed the Center for Native Arts & Cultures. Although the Foundation’s new headquarters is in Portland, Yeahpau said they have several employees who reside in Vancouver and work remotely.

According to the Foundation’s website, the vision for the center includes spaces for exhibitions, events, places to practice culture and make art, and areas for cultural ceremonies and celebrations to create a vibrant gathering place for Indigenous artists.

Over the years, Yeahpau said the Foundation’s grant award programs have changed to meet the needs of the communities.

“Our programs have evolved from fellowships and mentorship programs to our current offers of LIFT Early Career Support for Native Artists, and SHIFT Transformative change,” she said.

“These programs help artists to advance positive social change, point courageously toward environmental sustainability and foster communal meaning making.”

Yeahpau said that most of Native Arts & Cultures Foundation’s funds come from Foundation giving, grants and donors.

Like many other nonprofit organizations, Yeahpau said one of the Foundation’s most challenging times was during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Much of our work included artist site visits, gatherings and conferences, but with COVID we had to pivot,” she said. “At the same time, we received an historic building in Portland that completely changed the way we can engage with artists and community.”

Just recently in September, Yeahpau said the Foundation announced the latest LIFT program awardees. A total of 15 upand-coming artists were chosen to receive $10,000 each to develop their projects.

SHARE’S HOT MEALS PROGRAM Volunteers are the heart of Share and one program embodies this sentiment most: Share’s Hot Meals program. Share was founded in 1979 by a group of volunteers whose compassion inspired them to act by preparing and serving free meals to those in need in downtown Vancouver.

Forty-four years later, Share’s signature program remains committed to serving free meals to the public. Operating in the base-

Preparing, plating and serving 250+ meals every day is both a lot of work and an important commitment to our community. Share’s culinary kitchen staff have a real passion for preparing nutritious meals from scratch: from ham, cheese & egg casserole to roast pork loin with apples and onions. Creativity is key in meal planning, as most of the food is donated through partnerships with local businesses, as well as donations from the community.

But they don’t do it alone; Share’s Hot Meals program relies on the generosity of hundreds of volunteers each year to help serve meals from the dining room at Share House. Volunteers come from all walks of life and include business owners and professionals, homemakers, retirees, members of the faith community, military personnel and college students.

UNDERSTANDING CHARITABLE GIFTS BY: SAMANTHA MACBETH, ASSOCIATE AT SCHWABE Charitable giving is a way for businesses and individuals to support the causes that align with their values while saving on taxes. This article will cover common questions associated with charitable giving that will hopefully inspire charitable giving.

What are the benefits of charitable giving?

Giving is a way to support community, make an impact, or leave a legacy. Charitable giving can also have tax or legal upsides.

Tax deductions are one reason individuals and businesses make donations. Congress encourages charitable giving by providing tax deductions for charitable contributions. These typically come in two varieties: income tax deductions and estate tax deductions.

Income tax deductions: These can be taken on an income tax return to offset earned income. Generally, donors who take the standard deduction do not get to deduct charitable gifts.

However, donors who itemize their income tax deductions may deduct charitable contributions from income taxes within certain limits that are based upon a percentage of the donor’s adjusted gross income (“AGI”).

Estate tax deductions: These can be taken on an estate tax return to minimize any estate taxes due after the death of an individual, provided that person has left assets in the estate to charity at time of death through a will or estate plan.

Which charity should I give to?

Several considerations might determine which charity to donate to.

Tax deduction: In order to achieve tax advantages, the charity must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. The IRS has a Tax-Exempt Entities list that donors may rely upon. Check this before making a gift to a charity if deductibility is a concern.

Other considerations: Will the charity use funds in a manner agreeable to the donor? What kind of programs does the chari-

ty offer? Donor advised funds (“DAFs”) are an alternative if the donor has specific interests (education, food insecurity, environmental protection) but has not identified a specific charity.

How much is the right amount to give?

The amount is largely up to the donor. Here are a few considerations.

Capacity to gift: Gifts are irrevocable, and it’s important to avoid undermining other monetary goals, such as long-term spending needs and the transfer of wealth to family.

Frequency: Does one large gift or several annual ongoing donations make more sense?

If a tax deduction is a motivating factor, donors may want to work with their tax professionals to confirm whether income tax deductibility limits apply to them.

Qualified charitable distributions: If an individual wishes to make a contribution directly from their IRA, they may donate up to $100,000 and avoid paying income taxes on the distribution, known as a qualified charitable distribution.

Gift matching: Is a certain amount required to qualify for a gift match? Sometimes donors can be motivated to meet a gift-matching program to maximize their gift.

Which assets can, or should, I donate?

Different asset types entail different tax impacts. Donors also should consider how a charity’s gift acceptance policy may come into play—and whether the charity can accept certain types of gifts.

Tax advantaged assets: From a tax standpoint, appreciated assets owned for more than one year can be advantageous for donation because the donor avoids paying capital gains taxes and receives an income tax deduction based on the asset’s full fair market value, including gains.

Property that has decreased in value: Tax deductions of charitable donations are limited to the asset’s fair market value. continued page 21

Therefore, it is not necessarily advantageous to donate assets that have decreased in value because taxpayers cannot claim a deduction for the difference between the property’s basis and its fair market value.

Simplicity vs. complexity: Some assets, such as cash and securities, are easier to donate than assets like real estate, art, and tangible property, because of a charity’s gift acceptance policy or the requirements to obtain appraisals of some assets.

When is the best time to give?

Another consideration for anyone thinking about charitable giving is whether to make charitable gifts during life versus designating a bequest from an estate after the donor has passed away.

Lifetime gifts: An advantage of making lifetime gifts is that the donor gets to see the gift in action and the impact of their generosity on the community. The donor may also benefit from certain tax benefits, which include a potential income tax deduction in the year of the gift, and gifting assets out of estate, thus reducing the size of the estate and minimizing or eliminating future estate taxes.

Bequest from estate at death: Benefits include leaving a legacy, and the potential financial security of retaining assets. As noted above, making a bequest at death allows a deduction for estate tax purposes.

PROFILES OF GIVING: DRS. ALLEN AND CASSIE GABRIEL GABRIEL, ALONG WITH HIS WIFE DR. CASSIE GABRIEL, FOUNDED THE PINK LEMONADE PROJECT IN VANCOUVER IN 2010 Formed in 2010 by Drs. Allen Gabriel and Cassie Gabriel, the Pink Lemonade Project is a well-known nonprofit organization in the areas of Southwest Washington and Oregon. The organization’s programs and services offer emotional, educational, financial and psychological support for patients, families and caregivers affected by breast cancer.

The Vancouver Business Journal caught up with Dr. Allen Gabriel and found out a bit more about the formation of the Pink Lemonade Project and its mission.

VBJ: First, can you give me a bit of background on yourself?

How did you end up becoming a founder of the Pink Lemonade Project, along with your wife?

Allen Gabriel: My wife and I relocated to the Pacific NW after completing our medical residencies in Loma Linda, Calif. I am board-certified in Plastic Surgery and have completed additional Fellowship training both in Breast and Cosmetic surgery.

My wife is a board-certified Anesthesiologist.

Shortly after starting my practice in 2008, I heard several stories directly from my patients, that highlighted the significant gaps in breast cancer support in our area. After many discussions, my wife and I decided that we wanted to work on a project that would fill this gap. We determined that a retreat was a great place to begin. A retreat where women faced with breast cancer could focus on healing, and be provided with some tools to help them navigate through the, “what’s next?” We approached our dear friend Jeanne Firstenburg with our proposal, and she graciously agreed to fund our first several retreats.

In 2010, we were able to host the first Pink Lemonade Project Revive Retreat for nearly a dozen breast cancer patients who were on the other side of treatment. Feedback from participants was just astounding! We recruited some lovely patients and community members to create our first Board of Directors and obtained official 501c3 status. We are so grateful for our earliest community partners, The Firstenburg Family, and Waste Connections, who were instrumental in getting us off the ground.

Our Pink recycle cart is an ongoing program, and we want to continue to turn Clark County Pink!

After having served several years on the Board, we knew it was time for us to move off the board and serve in an emeritus capacity. We are still active cheerleaders and supporters for the current board, staff and numerous programs. We never miss an event!

VBJ: Can you give me some background on the Pink Lemonade Project itself? For those who might not know what the organization does, etc.

Gabriel: During the early years of Pink Lemonade Project, we only offered retreats and peer mentors. Today, the organization provides the full continuum of care from education and awareness, early detection and screening, and supporting people after diagnosis and beyond with emotional, psychological and financial support. We serve all six counties of SW Washington and all 36 of Oregon. The mission of Pink Lemonade Project is to educate, empower and support all communities affected by breast cancer. We are constantly searching for better ways to increase our outreach.

We provide resources and mentorship to our Spanish and Russian speaking families and are aiming to be mindful and active in supporting people of color who are so disproportionately affected by breast cancer and have worse health outcomes.

Pink Lemonade Project’s programs services help create a community of support for those patients, survivors, and for those living with Metastatic Breast Cancer, those families affected by this disease, and the providers who are so dedicated to these patients and families. continued page 23

VBJ: Are you involved with any other nonprofit organizations?

Gabriel: Pink Lemonade Project has always been the focus

of our philanthropic and community support. We are proud of the organization’s progress and are excited that they are meeting more needs today.

We also support several other local nonprofits, our local Humane Societies and Columbia Dance among others. Investing in our community is one of our family values.

VBJ: Since the Pink Lemonade Project was started, what kind of growth have you seen with the organization? Expansion, changes, etc.

Gabriel: The first program PLP started was a three-day retreat program for women who were at least a year out of treatment. The program was custom designed by a top oncology social worker at OHSU. Then other programs were started to address other gaps, including a peer mentor program that matches newly diagnosed patients with a trained peer mentors who shares a similar diagnosis and treatment; and then later educational events that brought in local providers to speak on breast-cancer specific topics related to treatments, recovery, survivorship and more. In the early years, growth was related to adding new programs.

Then in 2020, just before the pandemic, Pink Lemonade Project hired the first breast cancer survivor to serve on staff. Right after the pandemic hit and the organization has experienced explosive growth since. Just before the pandemic, and then the pandemic hit. In those early months of the pandemic breast cancer screening rates dropped 80 to 90 percent and now we are seeing the uptick in later staged diagnoses, more aggressive treatments and more breast cancer related deaths. Over the past three years, the need for programs and services grew by 138%. At the end of 2022, we served 2,572 people because cancer support services have not returned to their pre-pandemic levels, so patients going through breast cancer treatment today need community-based organizations like Pink Lemonade Project to help people with support before, during and after treatment.

In 2020, we raised $298,000 and served 1,084; in 2021, we raised $667,000 and served 1,754; in 2022, we raised $949,000 and served 2,572.

The need is great due to the impact of the pandemic on this disease and the gaps in support and Pink Lemonade Project is well positioned to be the leading breast cancer organization to serve the region.

Today, the organization welcomes all communities, especially those with added barriers to care. Whether you are experiencing symptoms, newly diagnosed, going through treatment, or living with breast cancer, we are here for you.

At that time, the Pink Lemonade Project board of directors met to consider adding more programs despite not having adequate staff or funding. We were in full support of expanding to help more patients with greater needs during the breast cancer treatments. The two specific programs addressed critical needs by specific populations affected by breast cancer (those with metastatic disease and those will geographic barriers to care).

We knew the right thing would be to step up and continue the programs, and then figure out how to keep it all going. The staff has worked tirelessly so patients have continued to get needed supports. The community responded and has helped the organization grow to meet the increasing needs.

HARVEST TIME AT CLARK COLLEGE’S MCCLASKEY CULINARY INSTITUTE The kitchen garden that wraps around three sides of the Tod and Maxine McClaskey Culinary Institute at Clark College is reaping a bountiful, colorful harvest for students to use in their recipes. Students and instructors from both the Cuisine Management program and the Professional Baking and Pastry Arts program have been harvesting herbs, vegetables, and fruits throughout the summer. This is the second year the garden has produced an abundant harvest.

“The tomatoes are really coming in and the squashes are still producing,” said Chef James “Sonny” Demartini, a cuisine instructor who spearheaded the kitchen garden project with Fay Shorten, a stockroom attendant in the college’s food services department. Clark College renovated its culinary space in 2017, thanks to a grant from the Tod and Maxine McClaskey Foundation. The blueprints included plans for culinary gardens around all three sides of the building, but there was no funding for a garden.

Demartini and Shorten did not let the lack of funding become a barrier to creating a kitchen garden for their students. They cleared

otherwise unused space outside the building and created gardens including fruit trees, berries, herbs and vegetables. Demartini is a Midwesterner who grew up immersed in gardening. He rolled up his sleeves and got to work. Sweat equity from Demartini, Shorten and many others laid the groundwork. Demartini made a list of everything they would need to get started.

The first step was recruiting a team of volunteers to get to work amending the soil, including adding nutrient-rich composted produce from the college’s kitchens. The culinary programs save all organic food scraps—from carrot tops to eggshells. Demartini feeds the scraps into a blue Landworks industrial woodchipper he converted into a food waste mulcher. Rather than waiting for many weeks for the food to become compost, it chops food waste into rich, organic matter that immediately can be worked into the garden soil.

Demartini credits the college’s hard-working grounds crew that has provided much labor, including revamping an irrigation continued page 27

system. Demartini and Shorten found ways to get products at no cost. This includes getting deliveries of bark chips from pear trees removed from Washington State School for the Blind. Demartini also pointed to a stack of pear logs that students will use to cure and smoke meats.

Not everything was free. About $8,000 in grant money was used to purchase some items, including the chipper and galvanized stock tanks they have repurposed as raised beds. Although some plants and seeds were donated, they also purchased others. Highlights of the growing season include Concrete planters along the north entrance to Gaiser Hall bursting with tomatoes, squash, peppers and an assortment of fragrant herbs, including sage, mint, rosemary, sorrel, lovage, parsley and chives; Red grapes hang from the vines; Hops growing high above the roof; Thriving fruit trees including apple and pear trees, plus plum,

quince and fig trees; Nasturtiums provide edible petals, a pretty garnish and an infusion in oils and vinegars.

The Tod and Maxine McClaskey Culinary Institute at Clark College is the only public, accredited culinary program in the metro region that offers a two-year associate in applied technology degree. Clark’s program offers competitive programs, a seasoned team of instructors with real-world experience, a state-ofthe-art culinary facility and collaborative industry partnerships.

INNOVATIVE SERVICES NW CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF SUPPORTING POSSIBILITIES Sixty years ago, a small group of parents in SW Washington took action. It was the early 1960s and few resources existed for children and families experiencing disabilities. In fact, before 1970, many states had laws excluding children with disabilities from attending public schools.

Determined to secure a better future for their children, a group of parents started the Clark Care and Development Center—an activity program for SW Washington children and adults with disabilities. At the time, the program served around 15 people each month.

Today, the Clark Care and Development Center has grown to become Innovative Services NW, a Vancouver-based nonprofit with 120 employees who serve more than 2,000 children, adults and families in SW Washington each year, many on a daily or weekly basis.

Over the past six decades, Innovative Services NW offerings have grown to include: • Early learning education programs for children ages one to five years old of all abilities and income levels.

• Pediatric therapy—including speech, occupational, physical and other speciality therapies—for children with developmental delays or disabilities.

• In-home support for infants and toddlers experiencing developmental delays or disabilities.

• Career planning, job training, and employment support for adults with disabilities.

All Innovative Services NW programs help empower individuals and families so they can learn skills, overcome challenges and be active participants in the community.

Dena Strong, President and CEO of Innovative Services NW, has been with the nonprofit since 2016. Under her leadership, the organization continues to grow and evolve.

Recently, Innovative Services NW was selected to operate the early learning education/childcare program on the Washington State University Vancouver campus. The nonprofit is actively hiring teachers for the WSU Vancouver site and therapists who are passionate about serving vulnerable community members for their pediatric therapy programs.

Parents and caregivers are the reason Innovative Services NW exists today. The actions of a few parents determined to improve the lives of their children sixty years ago has impacted the lives of thousands across Clark County.

STUDENTS AND FAMILIES GROW GARDENING SKILLS BY: NECA-IBEW 48 There is nothing better than fresh produce, especially when you help grow it. That is the vision behind the Lower Columbia School Gardens (LCSG) in the Kelso-Longview area.

LCSG connects kids and families with real food and hands-on learning through school gardens and cooking programs.

Some of the produce grown in the gardens is donated to residents who are unable to leave their houses. Some of the produce is supplied to the community through Free Farm Stands.

The gardens are maintained by the students, where they learn about growing fresh food, soil health, and the relationship with worms, bees and other beneficial insects. Parents and other area residents are welcome to help in the gardens as well. One family that has done that is the Lin family. Fiona (age 6) and Daniel (age 14) along with their parents, Brian and Michelle, are regulars at the Northlake Elementary school garden in Longview. They help with weeding, watering, thinning, and other tasks.

Michelle stated, “Fruits and vegetables grown in the garden taste better than those at stores.” She said that they never tried to eat uncooked asparagus until Ian Thompson, LCSG operations coordinator and founder, encouraged them to try it. Michelle said, “Fiona loves going to the gardens every day after school. It taught Fiona responsibility and empathy.”

Through her volunteer work, Michelle has learned all aspects of growing plants – what are normal growth patterns, when to add different fertilizers, and when to pick fruit from the tree so it won’t be harmed. The kids have learned about using organic soil and how it is safe to eat the produce straight from the tree or garden.

Thompson said, “Students don’t always know where fresh food comes from, and many households do not regularly cook with fresh ingredients. So, they get very excited to try new foods, in34 VANCOUVER BUSINESS FALL 2023

cluding edible flowers.” He says it connects them to the Earth in a real way.

The labor-management partnership between the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 48 (IBEW) has focused its charitable giving on investing in the communities where members live and work. The partnership’s trustee Andy Busack, owner of Busack Electric in Longview, said, “Helping our community with food security issues is vital to me as a lifelong resident and a business owner.”

Thompson stated that NECA-IBEW’s donation was greatly appreciated, allowing LCSG to provide this important opportunity for students at 20 school gardens.
