uring a virtual awards presentation held on Nov. 18, the Vancouver Business Journal recognized our Accomplished and Under 40 Class of 2021. Here is some more information/ bios on each of the 22 honorees from this year’s class. Congratulations again to all of you!

Alan Hwang GRAVITATE In September of 2012, Alan Hwang founded ACH Marketing, which was acquired by Gravitate in 2019. As vice president of growth and director of growth with Gravitate, Hwang is responsible for leading and growing the digital marketing department in all aspects, including innovation of service offerings, creating and refining process, collaborating and problem solving for clients to drive improved results, and more. He also works to help clients drive traffic to their website and convert that traffic into qualified leads/paying customers. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Hwang also shows a passion for community involvement and support. He is involved with several nonprofit boards, including the Columbia River Economic Development Council (CREDC) Board of Directors, the Evergreen School District Foundation and the TwinStar Credit Union Board of Directors. According to a letter of recommendation from LSW Architects Chief Strategy Officer Max Ault, who has worked closely with Hwang on a range of both business and community-focused endeavors: “In almost everything he takes on, Hwang displays an authentic level of ownership and accountability that sets a strong example for those around him to show up and do more for their clients, partners and community.” “I’m extremely flattered to be recognized alongside such a talented and impactful group of community advocates,” Hwang said. “On a personal note, I truly attribute a lot of my success to the support and inclusivity that the Clark County business community has given me through my career and hope to continue to expand this trend to future leaders.” 4 VANCOUVERBUSINESS DECEMBER 2021

Andrew Watts AUDIGY Having worked in the healthcare field since 2005, Andrew Watts has been the practice management consultant with Audigy since June of 2021. Prior to that, Watts held a number of positions with PeaceHealth, including clinic manager of the cancer program at Southwest Washington Medical Center, manager of volunteer services with Columbia Network, clinic manager of the Ear, Nose and Throat clinic and more. He also spent several years before that with Legacy Health. Aside from his professional life, Watts is on the Career & Technical Education Board for local school districts, helps at Clark College with interview and resume fairs, and helps Leadership Clark County teach the K and P leadership model. According to a letter of recommendation from Chris Selk, director of communications and customer service at C-TRAN: “With more than 16 years’ experience in health care, ranging from the operating room to women’s health clinics, Andrew spends every day living his truth: ‘remove the ego and greatness follow.’ It was rare to talk with Andrew and not hear him mention the importance of nurturing greatness in others. During our year in LCC, Andrew was (not surprisingly) promoted and, shortly after graduation, took a position as practice management consultant with Audigy. They are incredibly fortunate to have him on board.” “When I think about this recognition, what comes to mind is my ability to effectively work in and lead teams,” Watts said. “I wouldn’t be able to accomplish anything without the right people behind and around me. The most important part of being in a team is being able to listen and respect each person’s contributions and point of view. Each person has a valuable insight, I just need to listen and be open to new ideas and train of thought. As a world and society, we need to listen to each other more. We need to realize that our differences make us stronger together. I’m hoping to be a role model for future and current leaders.” ACCOMPLISHED & UNDER 40: See page 6

Her compassion, integrity, dedication and resolve are inspiring and challenge all of us on the team to do more in the community.” “I am incredibly honored and grateful,” Cochrun said. “It is inspiring to be a part of an amazing group of young professionals in Clark County. I am passionate about affordable housing and the work that Habitat for Humanity does in our community, and I feel blessed to be a part of it. I am especially grateful for my boss Josh Townsley for nominating me for this opportunity. Josh has always supported my professional development and has allowed me to grow in my leadership through pursuing my master’s and in my volunteer work.”

According to a letter of recommendation from Alex Tappan, a past barbershop coworker of Sears: “It was no surprise when (Rachel) started to volunteer at the domestic violence shelter. During this time Rachel was working a full-time job, going home to sleep for a few hours and then waking up to volunteer during the night. It was clear to those who worked at the shelter the heart that Rachel has and ended up hiring her on. Rachel continues that same routine of working as a barber during the day and a domestic violence advocate during the night. It is this drive that makes Rachel someone for the community to look up to.” “This award means so much to me,” Sears said. “I often don’t recognize that I am doing anything ‘special,’ I just get to do what I love daily, and that’s helping people. I was born wanting to help people, whether that’s help them feel confident with a new hairdo or help people who are victims of domestic violence. To have someone recognize the work that I do and think it’s something special, that they wanted to nominate me for this award means the world to me. I am proud of my accomplishments, and it’s incredible to know that there are others out there too, who spend their time helping in the community as well as run a business. I am honored to be nominated alongside them. Thank you so much.”

OFFICE MOMS & DADS

'Every child deserves to have basic human needs of connection, compassion met during time of trauma' By Joanna Yorke, Managing Editor

O

ffice Moms & Dads – a nonprofit organization that is made up of a community of volunteers partnering with child welfare offices to provide a nurturing environment for children entering foster care – started with five volunteers in one office in Vancouver and eventually spread to 350 volunteers in 26 offices and counting across two states (Washington and Idaho). “In 2013, I was a foster parent attending a meeting at the child welfare office here in Vancouver,” said Sarah Desjarlais, executive director of Office Moms & Dads (OMD). “During that meeting I saw a little boy sitting alone in a conference room – his meal and toys sitting untouched. He was alone, in every sense of the word. His social worker sat across the hall, feverishly working the phone, trying to find him a place he could call home. It occurred to me how hard it must be to do everything required of a social worker – and give a child who has just endured trauma the attention and comfort they need. A conversation with CPS Supervisor Kim Karu followed, and months later (we) founded Office Moms & Dads together – using a mother’s intuition and a social worker’s know-how.” Desjarlais said that Office Moms & Dads is founded on the idea that every child deserves to have their basic human needs of connection and compassion met during a time of trauma. She said that they believe that early intervention is the best solution for healing little bodies and minds affected by abuse or neglect. “OMD aims to give each child the best chance at a positive transition into foster care,” Desjarlais said. “OMD has pioneered a collaborative, community approach to support the children in our community who need it most.” The organization has one focus and function – mobilize community volunteers to be onsite at a child welfare office to play with, comfort and care for children who have just been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect and are waiting to be placed in a suitable foster care situation. “Our volunteers fill little bellies that may have not eaten in some time, bring tissues where there are tears and put ‘stuffies’ in the arms of children who have lost everything,” Desjarlais said. “They rock babies, change diapers, play games and are a listening ear for children who have had everything taken away.” Desjarlais said that OMD is a grassroots organization with a volunteer roster of 350 qualified and caring people. Aside

from their investment of time, she said many volunteers have gone all in and have become regular donors. In addition to their volunteers, other key areas of support for sustaining each OMD site include: Continually working to form and maintain local and regional corporate partnerships to help fund program budgets. Financial support from OMD’s individual donors that take the shape of monthly contributions (called their “Pinky Promise Society”), fundraising events and one-time gifts. In-kind support from community partners that also go toward supporting the organization’s Basic Necessities Program (clothing, food, baby supplies, coats, shoes, luggage, etc.). A large part of their annual fundraising comes from foundation grants such as the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington. See page 25

OMD has three major fundraising events each year, including the Summer Solstice Soiree, GiveMore24! and the Winter Solstice Soiree. Desjarlais said OMD has been especially supported by the business community in Southwest Washington. She said some of their favorite partnerships are with local realtors – Wollam and Associates, Berkshire Hathaway, Windermere and the Clark County Realtors Association, just to name a few. Other support OMD has received in the form of sponsorships for events and more includes iQ Credit Union, Perkins & Co., Heritage Bank, Providence Health, Cooper Chiropractic, ilani, McDonald’s Restaurants, Biggs Insurance, Ginn Group, Chick-fil-a, Salsbury & Co, Hayward Uskoski and Associates, Harry’s Locksmith, Finit, Slumberkins, Macy’s and various other community groups like Fort Vancouver Lions and Kiwanis clubs. In 2019, OMD was named the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce’s Charity of the Year and had the privilege of presenting at the Holiday Heroes Luncheon. Also in 2019, OMD was awarded the “Collaboration Award” by the Nonprofit Network of Southwest Washington. Like almost every nonprofit organization has, OMD has been impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the organization’s volunteer base is their strength, Desjarlais said they are finding that volunteers are not as available as they used to be, emotionally and physically – especially during the pandemic. Because of this, OMD continues to work on their outreach efforts for volunteer recruitment. Desjarlais said that the foster care system itself has been greatly impacted by the pandemic as well. “The foster care system was woefully unable to serve children in their charge before the COVID-19 pandemic,” she said. “As the crisis drags on, parents are becoming more desperate due to additional stressors such as school closures, job loss and economic insecurity. Studies show that child neglect cases increase up to 21% during times of financial crisis, and child abuse rates

directly mirror the unemployment rate.” “State agencies, as well as the juvenile courts that oversee foster care cases, essentially closed their doors during the pandemic, responding to only the most extreme cases,” Desjarlais continued. “Reports to the child abuse hotline dropped over 50% during the shutdown. Unfortunately, this does not translate to fewer children being abused and neglected, simply that they fell through the cracks during this time. When abusive situations are prolonged and exacerbated, it will only result in further trauma to children.” As the Washington offices begin to open back up after the vaccine mandate, Desjarlais said there has been a tidal wave of needs, and in Idaho they are seeing a record number of foster care cases. She said the stress on foster parents in Idaho has been especially evident – recently some foster parents were simply dropping children at the IDHW office when they were unable to find childcare. “Operationally, we were able to pivot quickly during the pandemic,” Desjarlais said. “Instead of helping with children inside the offices that were suddenly shuttered, we used resources to meet immediate needs within the foster care community. We continued to recruit using social media and conducted new

volunteer trainings online. We pulled our entire application process online, streamlining it for everyone.” Since being awarded their first grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust in 2018, Desjarlais said OMD has been focusing on strengthening their infrastructure and creating a sustainable model that will serve the organization well into the future. In the near future, she said they hope to be able to hire three staff members to support the organization’s 26 locations that are currently being run 100% by volunteers. Desjarlais said these sites are really beginning to fill the strain and fallout of the pandemic and the OMD board has identified the need to hire staff as critical. “Eventually we plan to expand into a chapter model, so we can bring the program to any state that wants it,” she said. “There are no other organizations doing the work we do, so there is a great sense of urgency knowing that children entering foster care across the country are experiencing greater trauma because they do not have an Office Moms & Dads by their side.” To learn more about how to become involved with Office Moms & Dads, how to volunteer and ways to give, visit their website at https://officemomsanddads.com/. REX PLASTICS CONTINUES TO SEE SUCCESS Plastic injection molding company in Clark County since 1971 has seen ‘explosive growth’ this year By Joanna Yorke, Managing Editor

R

ex Plastics Inc. was first founded in 1971 by Rex Clark, a former machinist for the U.S. Navy who started the company in his pump house with just one machine. Rex landed his very first customer making emergency vehicle antennas by hand in his second year of business, and, according to the Rex Plastics’ website, the company still molds for that same customer today. Now, 50 years later, Rex Plastics is run by Rex’s sons – Rich and Eric Clark, who act as president and vice president – as well as their cousin Toni Schmidt, account manager and purchasing manager, and cousin Todd Barnes, production supervisor. Rex Plastics is a custom plastic injection molding company that is based in Vancouver. The company provides product development and production services for companies ranging in size from large international corporations to start-ups. Rich Clark said they work a lot with inventors and entrepreneurs who have just an idea or a fledging project and help them bring it to market. Their services include part design, prototyping, injection mold design, mold building, production, pad printing, assembly, packaging and light distribution. The Clark family has been in the Clark County area since 1945 and since the company was started in 1971, Rex Plastics has grown to have more than 20 employees, and Rich said they have seen “explosive growth” this year, with revenue growth over 50%. “Being a family owned business provides an added layer of devotion for the people involved in it,” Rich said. “Not just as a job, interchangeable with anyone with the same qualifications, having a family member in a position embeds a ‘legacy’ factor and a familial pride along with the pride of corporate success.” Although being a family owned business has many advantages, Rich acknowledged that there can be some downsides as well. “When a family member doesn’t put their best foot forward and give their best efforts, it can be difficult to take corrective actions because of the familial relationships that underlie the position,” he said. “Without clear expectations some family members may misinterpret business decisions.” As a family owned business, Rich said it’s important to be sure to set clear expectations with family members, including job descriptions to eliminate assumptions about where duties lie. “Also be sure to clearly compartmentalize family and corporate decisions,” Rich said. “Don’t allow family history or biases, positive or negative, to influence how the business is ran, and be 26 VANCOUVERBUSINESS DECEMBER 2021

sure to articulate that when difficult decisions have to be made.” To the extent that Rex Plastics competes locally, Rich said one of the key things that keeps them successful in the community is the fact that as a rule they don’t lose customers, maintaining a 97% retention rate. He said this practice goes a long way in gaining new customers. A lot of Rex Plastics’ new local customers come from word-of-mouth, Rich said, even through industry suppliers who have firsthand knowledge of the industry space. “Our biggest differentiating factor has to be our lifetime guarantee on the molds that we produce,” Rich said. “There are more molders that offer that guarantee now, but we were one of the first to stand behind our work to that degree and it has paid off. If the mold stays with us for production, our customers will never see a repair bill for standard mold components.” As for the future of Rex Plastics, Rich said the future of the company will be in more automation. With the dramatic increase in labor costs that have been seen in the state over the last several years, he said automation is critical for the survival of a company like Rex Plastics. Rich said the problem is compounded by the fact that the world is a lot smaller than it was 10 or 20 years ago. “Although there are obvious risks and human rights and political concerns in getting products made overseas, the fact that we are competing against workers making $1/$2 an hour can’t be ignored,” he said. “The next five years will bring more growth for Rex Plastics, possibly through acquisitions.” Rex Plastics has been a winner in the Vancouver Business Journal’s annual Best in Business awards for the past several years and is a 2021 Best in Business winner.
