As we look to the future, we do so with great optimism. VUU is entering a new era—one defined by opportunity, transformation, and limitless possibility. Jherylmax Jones Finds Purpose and a New Home at Virginia Union University North Carolina native overcomes homelessness, chooses Virginia Union University for its history, heart, and hope.

Jherylmax Jones’ journey to Virginia Union University didn’t start with a campus tour or a college fair—it began with a bus ticket and a desire for something more.

Originally from North Carolina, Jones knew little about Richmond and had only visited Virginia once before. But one thing was clear: he didn’t want to stay in the circumstances he was in.

“I never had a stable home in my life. The only stable place I ever knew was the projects, where I lived for five years,” he recalled. Raised by a single mother, Jones was determined to create a different future. He purchased a one-way bus ticket to Richmond and moved between the homes of various people he knew while trying to get on his feet.

Upon arriving, he received support through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, a federal initiative that helps unhoused students access educational opportunities. As a result of this program, Jones was able to enroll in high school.

He attended classes while working fast food jobs to support himself and save up for a car, eventually sleeping in that very car.

One of his teachers, Ms. Angela Jordan, took notice and shared his story with Liberation Church, which stepped in to provide temporary housing and additional support. He continued showering at school and attending class, determined to keep moving forward.

Despite the challenges, college was always on his radar. He applied to every HBCU in Virginia and was accepted to all of them. However one university stood out.

“I kept getting emails from VUU, and when I visited campus, the energy was different,” Jones said. “It had a lot of history. The people were kind—and they reminded me of myself.” That moment made the decision easy. Jherylmax Jones chose Virginia Union University.

Now a student in Business and Mass Communications, Jones is enrolled in summer classes and already making strides. He’s proud of the progress he’s made and excited to get involved on campus.

When asked what kept him going through the hardest times, his answer is simple— but powerful: “You’ve got to keep pushing. If you stop, you’ll stay.”

From VUU to CEO — Philly Style!

After years of coaching entrepreneurs and closing high-value deals behind the scenes, I decided it was time to build something of my own — and on my own terms. That’s how The Bizness Jawn, LLC was born: a boutique consultancy dedicated to empowering individuals, entrepreneurs, and B2B companies through premium sales coaching, strategic clarity, and educational speaking.

This wasn’t just a career pivot — it was a reclamation of purpose. I took everything I’d learned in boardrooms and classrooms alike and poured it into a business that reflects my voice, my values, and my vision. Even the name, The Bizness Jawn, pays homage to my Philly roots.

It’s bold, authentic, and unapologetically me. “Jawn” isn’t just slang — it’s culture, versatility, and identity. It represents all the roles I play and the dynamic ways I show up for others.

Since launching, I’ve had the honor of onboarding new coaching clients, securing multiple speaking engagements at colleges and professional events, and leading interactive workshops that help students and entrepreneurs sell smart and scale bold. I’ve also built a growing online community that’s aligned, engaged, and ready to take action. Each milestone has affirmed what I already knew: this journey isn’t just possible — it’s powerful.

The Bizness Jawn is more than a company; it’s a platform for transformation, advocacy, and excellence — all built on the same grit, grace, and boldness that Virginia Union University instilled in me.

My story is, at its core, a reflection of what the VUU experience represents — alignment, ownership, and legacy. It’s a testament to what happens when we take our education, our faith, and our drive, and use them to build something that not only sustains us but serves others.

That same spirit of service lives on in my work today. Living in Houston, I partner with Prairie View A&M University to mentor students preparing for life beyond the classroom. Recently, I led a campus session on personal branding through LinkedIn, teaching students how to tell their stories with confidence and lead with purpose.

Every time I stand before a group of young people, I’m reminded of this simple truth: we don’t need permission to lead.

We can build boldly, serve deeply, and create impact that echoes far beyond any title we hold.

From Pioneer to Professor: A Generational Story of Excellence

My story begins with my grandmother—a proud alumna of Virginia Union University —whose courage and commitment to education shaped the very foundation of my life. She made history as the first teacher in her county to earn a graduate degree in special education. That milestone wasn’t just a personal achievement; it was a transformational moment for her students and community.

She opened doors for children with learning differences, expanded what was possible in classrooms, and embodied the essence of VUU’s mission—to educate leaders who break barriers and create opportunity for others.

Her legacy became my compass. Growing up under her guidance, I learned that education is not only a pathway to success, but a calling to serve. Today, as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University, I stand in the very legacy she began. I prepare future teachers to thrive in multicultural and urban classrooms, lead national conversations on equity in education, and design programs that empower both children and adults to find purpose and lead with integrity.

From publishing and co-editing works that elevate African American voices to developing innovative curricula for churches and classrooms, my work is rooted in the same values that my grandmother learned at Virginia Union— faith, excellence, and service. Her foundation became my springboard. Her courage became my calling.

Age Is Just a Number — You Can Start Over

Returning to college in my 30s was one of the most empowering decisions I’ve ever made. As a mother of two—working two jobs and juggling endless responsibilities— I knew the road ahead would be challenging. But from the moment I enrolled at Virginia Union University, something inside me shifted. VUU made me believe that success was possible at any stage of life.

From my first day on campus, I was met with encouragement, understanding, and professors who genuinely wanted to see me thrive. VUU wasn’t just an institution— it became a community that wrapped me in faith, patience, and purpose.

During my journey, life continued to unfold in beautiful and unexpected ways. I welcomed my third daughter into the world, often studying between diaper changes and late-night feedings. I also faced heartbreak when I lost my grandmother, one of my biggest supporters. Through every triumph and every tear, VUU stood beside me. My professors, classmates, and mentors reminded me that perseverance is power, and faith will always light the way forward.

When I finally walked across that stage as a mother of three, the moment was bigger than a degree—it was a celebration of perseverance, growth, and love.

Every assignment completed, every discussion shared, and every prayer whispered represented another step toward becoming the woman I always knew I could be.

My journey is a testament to what makes Virginia Union University so special. It’s not just a place where students earn degrees—it’s a family that uplifts and empowers you through every season of life. VUU believed in me before I fully believed in myself, and that’s why I’ll forever be proud to call it home.

VUU taught me that success has no age limit, no perfect path, and no expiration date. With faith, hard work, and community, dreams really can come to life —no matter where you start.

Worldwide Learners: How Studying Away Has Impacted Students’ Lives To ensure an enriching curriculum and experience for students, Virginia Union University’s office of Study Away offers programs and opportunities for students to learn abroad.

Brunston-Parker, who has been with the university since 2017, is enthusiastic about ensuring that VUU students become globally competent and gain meaningful cross-cultural experiences.

For the Fall 2025 semester, Virginia Union University (VUU) supported eight students studying abroad in countries including South Korea, Thailand, Japan, Tunisia, and Costa Rica.

“Studying abroad is imperative because it allows BIPOC students to develop global competence,” she explained. “I want the program to continue indefinitely so we can keep producing globally minded BIPOC graduates.”

“Study abroad is very beneficial for people of color. Less than 6% of students of color study abroad compared to 66% of Caucasian students,” said LaKendra Brunston-Parker, Coordinator of Study Away.

Any Brooks, a senior health sciences major from New York, has studied abroad three times while attending Virginia Union University. She began her journey in Costa Rica in Spring 2024, then studied in

Thailand in Fall 2024 and Japan in Spring 2025. Brooks has now returned to Costa Rica for Fall 2025, where she is studying biology at Universidad LCI Veritas.

“Sometimes we’re too comfortable where we are, and that can be a double-edged sword when we’re not willing to explore,” Brooks said. “Having the opportunity to go out, experience new cultures, and meet new people allows you to see the world — and yourself — in ways you never imagined. I definitely feel that I’ve grown as a person because of these experiences.”

Leslie Cox, who currently serves as Vice President of Academic Affairs for the Student Government Association, is studying in Tunisia at the IEC – Intercultural Education Center. As a nontraditional student, Cox was initially hesitant about studying abroad but ultimately decided to take the leap.

“I can’t even begin to describe how much I’ve grown — just being in another country, seeing how people live, especially in a nation founded by a woman,” Cox shared.

“As a social work major who wants to work with women, the information I’ve gained through gender studies here has been invaluable.”

While abroad, Cox has been conducting research on Tunisian culture, including interviews with five local women to learn about their experiences, challenges, and ambitions. Upon returning to campus in Spring 2026, she plans to advocate for study abroad opportunities as part of her student government platform.

Virginia Union University Honors Inaugural 40 for 40 Class of Change Makers Virginia Union University the induction of its inaugural class of 40 for 40 Change Makers—distinguished alumni who are leading with impact, purpose, and Panther pride. Together, these visionary leaders will raise a collective $80,000 in support of student scholarships and the future of Virginia Union University.

The 40 for 40 Initiative recognizes 80 alumni who exemplify VUU's mission and values through professional excellence, community leadership, and a steadfast commitment to empowering the next generation. Each honoree represents the spirit of excellence reimagined—uplifting students and investing in the university's continued growth.

Honorees were formally inducted into the Inaugural Class of Distinguished Alumni during a fall 2025 event. A culminating celebratory event will take place in Spring 2026, where the collective impact of their generosity will be showcased through the awarding of student scholarships. The celebration will highlight how individual contributions and shared purpose can transform lives and create lasting opportunities for future generations of Unionites.

“Our 40 for 40 honorees embody the best of Virginia Union University—leaders who are transforming their communities and creating pathways for others to succeed,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and

CEO of Virginia Union University. “Their collective efforts demonstrate that when we give together, we grow together. This milestone is not only about philanthropy, but about legacy.”

Through this initiative, VUU continues its mission to build a culture of giving that empowers students, enhances academic excellence, and strengthens the institution’s foundation for generations to come.

VUU Receives Nearly $400K in Support from Amazon to Advance Student Opportunity Amazon’s nearly $400K investment reflects a deep and growing commitment to the academic, professional, and global readiness of Virginia Union University students. This transformative partnership extends far beyond financial support—it is creating real pathways to opportunity, industry exposure, and experiential learning that positions VUU students to compete and lead in a global economy.

As part of this collaboration, the Sydney Lewis School of Business will travel to Dubai for a one-week study abroad immersion during Spring Break.

Sponsored by the Business School in partnership with Amazon, selected students will engage in hands-on learning, complete a case study directly with Amazon, and tour Amazon’s

Dubai facilities—an opportunity that blends classroom learning with real-world, global business application.

“I love experiential learning; students can read about global business in a textbook, but experiencing it firsthand shifts their entire perspective,” said Dr. Wendy Jewell, Dean of the Sydney Lewis School of Business.

“This gives students a whole new level of exposure that shapes their worldview, leadership, and future careers.”

VUU alumna Amanda Holder, who credits travel with shaping her leadership and cultural lens, shared the value she sees in the new program: “Traveling made me who I am—diverse in thought, experience, and understanding. Many of our students dream of becoming business owners.

Learning how companies operate globally will make them stronger leaders and innovators.”

Interest among students is already high. Janay Chark, a graduate student in the Executive MBA program with a concentration in Hospitality Management, expressed her excitement: “Visiting Dubai has always been on my bucket list. I want to experience the culture and understand how innovation thrives there. This feels like a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Virginia Union University Celebrates 161st Academic Year with Opening Convocation Virginia Union University (VUU) marked the beginning of its 161st academic year with a powerful convocation ceremony, invoking a spirit of hope and inspiration to its students and attendees.

Among the distinguished attendees were former Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones, faith leaders, university alumni, and members of the Virginia Union community who gathered to celebrate the legacy and future of the historic institution.

After a welcome by President & CEO Hakim J. Lucas, Ph.D., the event began with an invocation prayer by Pastor Rodney Waller and a performance of “ Lift Every Voice and Sing” by the University Choir.

Dr. Franklyn W. Richardson, Chair of the VUU Board of Trustees, reflected on the university’s rich history and enduring mission.

“The 161st opening of Virginia Union — we did it again,” he said. “We’ve come back to start again, to start fresh, to begin with new energy, new students, new vision.

Commitment and loyalty have been our shepherd along the difficult terrain of our 161 years.”

He urged students to embrace their identity as "Unionites" with pride and responsibility.

“Carry it with boldness and grace. Know there’s nothing you cannot be and cannot do. Make it clear you come from a people who have a legacy of sacrifice.”

On behalf of the student body, 91st Student Government Association President Ivie Armstrong-Edlow, a junior studying entrepreneurial management, energized her peers with a message of empowerment and purpose.

“We are not powerless,” she said. “We are the students of Virginia Union University.

We are the future entrepreneurs, educators, activists, leaders, and visionaries. Tomorrow’s destiny is in our hands.”

She encouraged fellow students to embrace the academic year as “a chance to make the future as bright as possible.”

Dr. Melva K. Wallace, the 7th President and CEO of Huston-Tillotson University delivered the keynote address. Dr. Wallace emphasized the importance of choosing to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), describing the decision as a transformative opportunity.

“You have entered into this incubator that is properly preparing to propel yourself into positions, promotions, and prosperity,” Wallace said, encouraging students to seize every opportunity available to them.

27 | Academic Excellence She concluded her speech with a prayer for the university: “The venerable, vivacious, and victorious Virginia Union, I pray for you good health and prosperity, safety and abundance, and claim that you will never forget you are the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath. You are blessed in the city and blessed in the field.”

Dr. Hakim J. Lucas welcomed the Class of 2029, incoming freshmen, and new faculty members. He reminded students to draw inspiration from the achievements of VUU alumni, emphasizing the university’s legacy of excellence. “You are Virginia Union University — the only HBCU with the largest number of alumni who have served as presidents of HBCUs,” Dr. Lucas added.

He encouraged students to continue VUU’s legacy with pride and purpose. “It will not end with you, because we’ve come too far to just come this far.”

The university's Alma Mater was performed before the benediction by Dr. Waller, introducing the new year.

As Virginia Union University enters its 161st year, it remains a symbol of progress, perseverance, and educational distinction with a rich history. VUU looks forward to a year marked by meaningful scholarship, dynamic leadership, and the continued honoring of its enduring legacy.

Ruth Coles Harris Leadership Institute Honors Community Leaders at Annual Awards Luncheon The Ruth Coles Harris Leadership Institute at Virginia Union University’s Sydney Lewis School of Business held its annual Awards Luncheon on September 27, 2025, at the university’s Living and Learning Center.

This year’s keynote address was delivered

by George Keith Martin, Counsel and former Managing Partner at McGuireWoods LLP. A respected leader in law and civic engagement, Martin spoke on the importance of ethical leadership, community service, and legacy building.

“The Ruth Coles Harris Institute has existed for seven years to honor the legacy of Dr. Ruth Coles Harris by

preparing the next generation of leaders through four central pillars: professional development, certificate programs, scholarships for academic excellence, and annual leadership awards,” said Dr. Gene Quarles, Executive Director of the Institute.

He continued, “Let us reaffirm our shared commitment: to develop principled leaders who transform organizations, elevate communities, and honor the legacy of excellence at Virginia Union University.”

During the event, three community leaders were recognized for their outstanding contributions and impact. Two students from the Sydney Lewis School of Business were also awarded scholarships for their academic excellence and leadership potential.

Among the honorees was Moses Foster, President and CEO of the West Cary Group, a full-service marketing and communications firm. He was recognized for his leadership in business and his ongoing commitment to community advancement.

Corynn S. Arnett, Executive Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Customer Service at Dominion Energy, received the Community Service Award, while Janara N. Jones, a VUU alumna and Vice President of Global Tax & Custos at Amer Sports, Inc., received the VUU Award for her professional achievements and support of the university community.

The Institute is named in honor of Dr. Ruth Coles Harris, a pioneering educator and trailblazer who served on the Virginia Union faculty for nearly 48 years. As the founding director of the Sydney Lewis School of Business, she played a pivotal role in expanding the school’s curriculum and enrollment. Dr. Harris also holds the historic distinction of being the first African American woman in Virginia to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). She was named Distinguished Professor Emerita upon her retirement, in recognition of her lasting impact.

This pioneering initiative will be housed within the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology at VUU and represents a groundbreaking step forward in the integration of technology and theology.

The Jordan Institute is an innovative, interdisciplinary hub designed to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence, digital technologies, and theology.

VUU Day at City Hall Virginia Union University students were invited to participate in “VUU Day at City Hall,” a day filled with lectures, seminars, and hands-on activities designed to promote civic engagement and public service awareness.

The event began with a welcome lecture titled “How Does City Government Work?”

Students were then separated into groups to complete an activity where they were mock city council members. They designed a city budget based on different needs the city and their districts had. It also featured an interactive session and remarks by Councilmember Kenya Gibson.

Students had the opportunity to meet key city leaders, including Bobby Vincent, Director of Public Works;

Karla Almendarez-Ramos, Human Services Coordinator and Manager of the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Engagement (OIRE); Kevin Vonck, Director of Planning and Development Review; and Mike Smart, Sustainability Engagement Coordinator.

One of the highlights of the day was a roundtable discussion focused on careers in public service. Panelists included Tayia D. West, Ninth District Council Liaison for the Honorable Councilmember Nicole Jones; Miles Hopkins, Digital Communications Specialist; and Tarnika Edmunds, Legislative Liaison.

Tayia D. West, a VUU alumna, shared how her education at VUU prepared her for a successful career in city government.

“My undergraduate experiences as a Panther shaped me into someone who is resilient, determined to persevere, and prepared to serve through any adversity,” said West. “Working at City Hall has challenged me, helped me grow, and given me opportunities to connect with the people of our city in ways I never imagined.”

“This week, I celebrated my one-year anniversary working with City Council.

Spending the day with current VUU students felt like a full-circle moment. I’m honored to be in a position where I can share with them that their future is limitless—and that they absolutely have what it takes to achieve everything their hearts desire.”

In a surprise visit, Mayor Avula addressed students, sharing his journey to becoming mayor and emphasizing the importance of civic involvement—especially during college.

During a Q&A session, James Johnson III, current Mister Maroon & Steel asked: “what were your most effective steps for running for mayor?”

Mayor Avula responded: “The advice I would give you is: get plugged in—even now as an undergraduate student. There are so many opportunities to work on campaigns and to understand how the machinery of politics works. Come work with us at City Hall—we’d love to have you.”

Virginia Union University Students Speak at Richmond City Council Meeting and Reflect on Groundbreaking Passing of City Approval Virginia Union University students made their voices heard on September 22 as five student leaders spoke at a Richmond City Council meeting in support of the Gateway North Project Special Use Permit (SUP)- an initiative that will bring new housing and retail space to the city’s North Side. City Council voted unanimously to pass Ordinance 2025-173, authorizing the use of property at North Lombardy Street and Brook Road for the development of Gateway North, a mixeduse complex including 100 apartment units primarily for VUU students.

Approximately 31 Virginia Union students attended the meeting in support of the initiative. The students who spoke emphasized the urgent need for housing solutions and the larger impact of the project on both the university and the Richmond community. “Virginia Union University is more than a campus, it’s a symbol of resilience,” said Kei’Shaun Hardy, former student trustee and a religion and philosophy major. “Founded on the grounds of Lumpkin’s Jail, once known as the Devil’s Half Acre, it rose from suffering to become a vision born of faith.

In 2025, we can no longer look like what we’ve been through—we must create opportunities for our students, our neighbors, and future generations.” Hardy later reflected on the experience: “Speaking at City Council was powerful. I hope our speeches strengthen the relationship between VUU and city leadership, paving the way for increased support, investment, and visibility for our students and initiatives.”

The project marks a historic moment for the university—it will be the first offcampus development in its 165-year history and the first of its kind by a Black developer in the area. Gateway North will be a model in HBCU-led urban development and economic growth.

Jenyia Andrews, Miss Junior and a health sciences major with a minor in physics, also addressed the council. “Speaking at City Council was such a rewarding experience,” she said. “The planning process required collaboration and intentional thought to ensure our voices represented Virginia Union well.” She expressed hope that the city would recognize the strength and unity of VUU students. “From my speech, I hope the city sees the importance of supporting student-led initiatives and continues to strengthen its partnership with VUU.”

41 | Academic Excellence Senior Jasira Lemaitre, SGA Vice President of External Affairs and a criminal justice major, called the experience “revolutionary and inspiring.”

“It felt great to be a young Black woman speaking before the City Council in support of my historically Black university,” she said. Lemaitre is hopeful for what this project can do for future students. “This project not only expands VUU’s footprint, but it can potentially provide much-needed affordable housing for our graduate students and soon-to-be professionals,” she added.

“Speaking at City Council was an empowering moment,” said James Johnson, current Mister Maroon and Steel. “The preparation and collaboration that went into the presentation made me hopeful that our words will open doors for greater opportunities and support for our students.”

Gateway North will include 80 onebedroom apartments, 20 two-bedroom apartments along with 10,000 sq. ft. of community-scale retail and 50 parking spaces. It is planned to be a hub for connection with VUU students and the surrounding community, and to align with the Richmond 300 plan, a city-wide master plan that aims to prioritize equitable growth throughout the city over the next 20 years.

42 | Academic Excellence Cameron Cosby, a 2025 graduate now enrolled in VUU’s Master of Social Work program, brought a non-traditional student perspective. “As a student with children the same age as many of my peers, I often take on challenges to be an example for younger students,” Cosby said. “It felt good to stand beside them, advocating for VUU’s future. We may be a small campus in Virginia, but we have big history, big contributions, and a big community. The students were met with support from the council as every council member asked to be listed as a patron of the special use permit.

City Council President Cynthia Newbille directly acknowledged the students during the session. “I want to especially thank the Virginia Union students,” she said. “We look forward to seeing you not just this evening, but ongoing—as you remain vigilant in terms of the legislation coming before our city and our community and making sure we have opportunity to hear your voices so I wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you."

The Gateway North approval is only the beginning of what’s ahead for Virginia Union University. With this historic milestone, new developments are already in the pipeline—initiatives that will further expand VUU’s footprint, create opportunities for students and neighbors, and strengthen our role as a catalyst for economic empowerment in Richmond. In just five years, Virginia Union University (VUU) has become a model of transformation in higher education, and this year that momentum is reflected in the 2026 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, where VUU rises to #43 among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs)—up from #47 last year and firmly within the nation’s Top 50 HBCUs.

“Remaining in the Top 50—and moving higher—is a testament to the relentless commitment of our students, faculty, and staff,” said Hakim J. Four-year graduation rates have surged 71.4%, and the graduates of the Class of 2025 entered the workforce with average salaries of $64,000, while 44% pursued graduate studies with 42% of them right here at VUU. Graduate students also flourished, with their numbers surpassing undergraduate graduates for the second year in a row and earning average salaries of $76,000.

With the introduction of nine new master’s programs, from public health to an executive MBA, faculty impact has soared: faculty earning power has increased 45%, faculty members have published scholarly works, earned tenures, and received Fulbright recognition. Smith—renowned entrepreneur, philanthropist, and Founder, Chairman & CEO of Vista Equity Partners—for an inspiring fireside chat. Drawing from his new book, Lead Boldly: Seven Principles from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Smith explored how Dr. King’s enduring ideas— The Beloved Community, “Two Americas,” and economic justice—can guide today’s leaders to turn principle into practice. The conversation, moderated by VUU President & CEO Dr. Hakim J. Lucas and Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. W.

Franklyn Richardson, invited the campus and Richmond community to lead with purpose and impact.

“Robert, Lead Boldly asks us to do more than admire Dr. King’s words—it calls us to act, Dr. Lucas shared. “Each chapter, framed by a King speech curated with Dr. Bernice King and your own reflection, ends with a challenge that urges us to ‘get into the arena’—to turn conviction into policy, philanthropy, and daily practice that advances social and economic justice.”

The empowering and thought-provoking program preceded the 62nd anniversary of the March on Washington (August 28, 1963)—a timely reminder of the progress made since Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and the unfinished work of justice that still calls this generation to act. “It is essential that we not only teach and train our children to take risks but encourage them to take risks. That is essential to progress, we may not have all we want, but by aging opportunity, risk, capabilities, our infrastructure, our knowledge to improve our ability to deliver to our community,” Smith said.

In conversation with Smith about how present-day leaders can use the principles of Dr. King to make a difference right now, Dr. Richardson shared, “King had a broad civil rights agenda. He wanted to eradicate what identified as the triple evils of poverty, racism and violence. But his last campaign as some may remember, was around economics, bringing poor Blacks and whites, Native Americans, and people from all walks of life to Washington. He did not live to see it come to fruition, but he wanted to. And today, we're still working.

The ceremony, held at City Tech University in Brooklyn, New York, brought together gospel music’s brightest stars, devoted fans, and community leaders for an unforgettable evening of worship, celebration, and tribute.

Bishop Walker’s groundbreaking contributions to gospel music were at the heart of the celebration. His influence on the genre—spanning decades—has inspired millions around the world through his ministry, music, and mentorship.

The star-studded event featured dynamic performances by Tamela Mann, Jekalyn Carr, Tim Bowman, Faith City Music, Anthony Brown, and American Idol winner Jamal Roberts. The evening was hosted

The Roar Awakened During VUU’s Epic 2025 Homecoming Virginia Union University celebrated the 2025 homecoming season with a roar — a week packed with excitement, unity, and Panther pride. With over 9,000 attendees, Homecoming was a week to remember.

Amazon returned as the title sponsor, along with The ELOCEN Group as an additional sponsor, helping fuel a fun-filled week of festivities and hands-on experiences for students, alumni, and the wider community.

The HBCU Experience at Amazon returned, featuring the Rah-Rah cheerleaders, the Ambassadors of Sound Marching Band, and sorority and fraternity performances where VUU students displayed their distinct energy and talent.

The long-anticipated week kicked off on Sunday, October 12th , with a VUU Homecoming Pop-Up Concert featuring the legendary Hezekiah Walker and a powerful performance by VUU’s gospel choir, led by Joel Lester.

Monday kept the momentum going with a lively Trail Ride, where students donned their best country-western attire. On Tuesday, Panthers took a nostalgic spin at a 90s-themed skate party.

Wednesday, October 15th, was the pep rally, where students were invited to show their best school spirit, and they were later invited to participate in a Silent Headphone party.

Thursday brought the esteemed and engaging Clergy Fellowship Breakfast in the morning, with a major milestone as the Student Government Association inaugurated its new president, Ivi Armstrong-Edlow, along with newly appointed cabinet members at the weekly chapel service, with guest preacher Dr. George Lewis Parks Jr. of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Largo, Maryland.

That evening, the much-anticipated Royal Court was unveiled at the elegant Phantom of the Opera-themed event.

Amazon representatives present title sponsorship check during the homecoming celebration The weekend came alive on Friday with Yard Fest, featuring DJ Stakz. Alumni and students showcased their merchandise, delicious food, and handmade goods. Live entertainment and a grand appearance by the new Royal Court kept the energy high.

The night concluded with a spirited step show, where sororities and fraternities showcased their best routines, bringing the heat and pride.

Homecoming Day began with a vibrant parade down Lombardy Street, drawing cheers and community pride. A surprise appearance by VUU alum and Virginia's first Black Governor, L. Douglas Wilder, was a delight to all. At Hovey Field, the Panthers dominated Lincoln University with a commanding 66-21 victory, boosting their season record to an impressive 6-1 with a first-quarter lead of

VUU's own Dex Rob, celebrity stylist, brand manager, and designer of VUU Panthers Yardrunner Air Force 1, also had a Meet and Greet in the President's tent, where attendees were invited to get their own pair of Yardrunners signed.

The night ended on a high note with tailgating and a free homecoming concert at Barco-Stevens Field, headlined by singer Jacquees, DJ Kid Capri, and Be'La Dona, Washington, D.C.'s all-women go-go band. The event was presented by Elocen Group hosted by VUU Trustee Necole Parker and capped off a memorable week.

Etched in the Hall of Fame Virginia Union University inducted eight outstanding individuals and the 1992 Men's Basketball Team into the Thomas "Tricky Tom" Harris Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, September 19, 2025.

Malcolm Barnwell made his mark as a standout wide receiver in the NFL. Carl Bland, a 1984 graduate of Virginia Union University (VUU), also played wide receiver professionally with the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers, and went on to win a Grey Cup in 1992 with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders. He now serves as both a pastor and school administrator in St. Louis. Valerie Briggs devoted over 20 years as head coach of the VUU Cheerleaders, known as "The Rah Rahs."

Ashlé Freeman remains Virginia Union’s all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball, amassing 1,758 career points between 2011 and 2015. A two-time AllCIAA selection, she also holds the school record for most steals in a single game, with 12. Brian Gurley was a dual-sport athlete at VUU from 2009 to 2012, competing in football and track & field. He earned All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships, won the CIAA title in the 60-meter dash, and was part of the All-CIAA 4x100 relay team. In 2012, he was named VUU Male Athlete of the Year.

Major General Mitchell Kilgo, who played football for the Panthers from 1985 to 1988, currently serves as Deputy

Inspector General of the U.S. Army Inspector General Agency. Marvin and Janice Willingham, both proud VUU alumni, have been lifelong supporters of Panther Athletics. Marvin played football under Coach "Tricky Tom" Harris and was mentored by the legendary Henry Hucles.

The Willinghams have consistently shown unwavering dedication to the university’s athletic programs.

The 1992 Men’s Basketball Team, under the leadership of legendary coach Dave Robbins, achieved a historic season by winning both the NCAA Division II National Championship and the CIAA Championship, finishing with an impressive 30–3 record. This marked the second of three national titles won during Coach Robbins' tenure and cemented the team’s legacy as one of the most celebrated in Panther history.

“Anytime you’re being honored for work you did is an honor, they were national champions and that’s very rare, that a small D-2 school became champions,” said Dave Robbins, coach of the 1992 Men's Basketball team.

“When you're a champion you beat everyone else in the country, so they deserved it” he said.

Ashlé Freeman looks back with honor as she represented an HBCU in athletic excellence. “Sometimes HBCUs are counted out so when you play, you

59 | Athletics always represent your school, your team, yourself with so much more”. I think it's important to show people that HBCU athletes are just as good, if not better.”

She is grateful that she left a mark and hopes for the best for the future Lady Panthers.

“Playing at Union and being the all-time leading scorer for women's basketball is a great feeling.” I hope my legacy continues and every time a new group of girls come in, they always will see my name in those record books.”

Malcolm Barnwell became a professional athlete but credits Virginia Union University for his start. He graduated with a degree in recreation in 1980 and played on the football team under Willard Bailey, the football coach with the most wins in the history of the CIAA. “I wanted to be a quarterback and Virginia Union University offered me that opportunity, then they changed me to wide receiver”. Barnwell went on to play for various teams as a Wide Receiver including the Washington Redskins (now known as the Commanders), The New Orleans Saints, and The Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders totaling 45 receptions for 851 yards and two touchdowns in his 1984 season.

Even after playing multiple NFL seasons and winning championships, Barnwell remembers where it all started and is grateful : “If I could do it all over again, I would come right back to Virginia Union”

Virginia Union University Receives $25,000 Grant for New Athletic Equipment Virginia Union University was selected unanimously as the 2025 recipient of a $25,000 scholarship from Settle Helps.

The funds will be used to support studentathletes and upgrade facilities. Settle Helps is a non-profit organization created solely to donate and assist historically Black colleges and universities, and funds are raised at their annual golf event held in October.

Michael Ricks, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, who applied for the grant, is excited about all the grant means for student-athletes. “My goal was to ensure that our students and the university have a high-quality facility where they can train

and feel confident. A better weight room means our athletes can feel good, look good, and play good—all of which are essential for performance.

Ricks is honored that SettleHelps selected Virginia Union University as their recipient, as he sees an alignment in their mission with the university. “I reached out to Settle Helps because of their strong commitment to empowering underserved communities and supporting youth through athletic and educational development," said Ricks.

“Their mission aligns perfectly with VUU’s values, and I knew their support could make a meaningful impact on our studentathletes’ experience.”

Steve Settle, CEO of SettleHelps, hopes VUU students, along with other students from historically Black universities, can see this grant as proof that they are worth investing in and pay it forward one day.

“I hope the students see that there are entities out there that give back to HBCU’s” Settle said. “Hopefully, students can be in a position where when they graduate, they are willing to give back to their school and other historically Black colleges.”

Jahari Williams, a computer science major and corner for the football team, is excited for what this means for athletes. “It’ll help by having more equipment and being able to do a variety of lifts. We were good with what we had, but this will be better overall." Williams is excited to put all the new equipment to good use in this upcoming season. “We appreciate everything we have, but we gotta keep our heads down and work, 3-peat, we’re planning on a national championship!"
