PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Your university’s march toward excellence continues. The pace is accelerating, and it is something to behold. Everyone at Virginia Union is united behind a clear goal: Transform Virginia Union into a Best-in-Class university. We made tremendous progress in 2022-23, and we present this report to you with great enthusiasm. We made important advancements in every part of our business: • Virginia Union University was selected as one of nine Historically Black Colleges and Universities to partner with The Historic Fund, a venture capital fund established to help grow HBCU endowments. • Our athletic teams earned Player of the Year and Coach of the Year honors from the CIAA, and our golf team became the first HBCU to win back-to-back national academic championships. • We welcomed the return of great university traditions, such as the annual Legacy Awards and Scholarship Gala (which raised $300,000 to funds student scholarships), and we launched an extensive Master Planning effort to shape the future of our campus. • We earned extensive national media coverage, as CBS Saturday Morning told the story of The Devil’s Half Acre. The entire Virginia Union family can be proud of this progress—and we eagerly embrace the opportunities to raise our standards even higher. We begin the new year with a dramatic 31% surge in enrollment. This is especially gratifying at a time when some question the value of higher education. We know that students have choices, and we are proud they are selecting Virginia Union in rising numbers. These achievements are a testimony to our faculty who teach students, to our alumni who inspire them, and to our community that guides students to a lifetime of success. We deeply appreciate all you do for this important institution, and we ask for your continued prayers and support.

Hakim J. Lucas, Ph.D. President & CEO Virginia Union University

IIE AMERICAN PASSPORT GRANT PAVES THE WAY FOR VUU STUDENTS STUDY ABROAD SUCCESS Virginia Union has been selected by the Institute of International Education (IIE) to receive an IIE American Passport Project grant enabling up to 25 Virginia Union students to obtain a U.S. passport and support their study abroad journeys. In this third year of the program, IIE awarded 48 institutions in the IIENetwork for this opportunity, which will help up to 1,200 Pell-eligible, U.S. students obtain their U.S. passports and start their study abroad journey. “A passport is the first thing that opens up their world to the possibility of study abroad,” said Courtney Temple, IIE Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer. As a key initiative under IIE’s newly launched Center for Access and Equity, the IIE American Passport Project represents IIE’s commitment to create access to international education opportunities and enable equity. For this program, IIE is removing an initial financial barrier for many – the cost of a U.S. passport; thereby, helping to increase diversity and inclusion of students studying abroad. Through the IIE American Passport Project, IIE aims to empower 10,000 U.S. students with their passports by the end of this decade. VUU Office of Study Away will allow 25 “first-year Pell Grant eligible” students

to participate in a traditional, bilateral exchange, international service-learning, international internships, faculty-led or independent short-term study abroad, and faculty-led programs abroad. This grant will also provide Virginia Union with the Post-COVID study abroad reboot needed to adhere to the Nine Nobles Strategic Plan noble culture; every student must have a term away experience. Most importantly, VUU will provide students with an all-access granted the opportunity to become globally competent citizens in today’s globalized workforce and increase critical language immersion and produce critical language speaking BIPOC HBCU graduates. In addition, the grant is intended to support the IIENetwork, IIE’s global membership association, in assisting students from their respective campuses to go abroad who would otherwise not participate in an international experience as part of their college education. The program prioritizes first-year students, with limited financial means, for whom this may be their first passport and makes global learning abroad a greater possibility with an earlier start. The awarded institutions will couple the grant funding with their engagement and outreach, advising, programming, and additional support for the students they have identified for this program.

Studying abroad has opened me to learning new languages to communicate with different people of the world. Study Abroad has given me a chance to play soccer with locals, to fellowship with neighbors and has provided the opportunity to strengthen my skills as a rising international videographer and photographer. I love Japan so much that I extended my stay as I continue to work on my Master of Business Administration Degree online through Virginia Union University”. —Josue A. Gomez

That is why I will continue to write these grants,” he added. Dr. Darius Beechaum, Director of Sponsored Programs, presided over the ceremony with Dr. Linda Jackson, VP of Sponsored Research and Innovation (SRI). At the event’s start, Dr. Jackson acknowledged the hard work of the grant participants and thanked them for their dedication to the grantsmanship process. ALTRIA GRANT EMPOWERS STUDENTS: $500,000 FUELS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING SUMMER INSTITUTE Virginia Union University’s School of Arts and Sciences recently hosted its Science and Engineering Summer Institute, a five-week initiative made possible by a generous $500,000 grant for the 20212022 academic year, generously provided by Altria Group. This innovative program was specifically designed to offer incoming first-year students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) projects, providing them with invaluable realworld, hands-on experiences.

[In Progress—For Placement Only]

Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of VUU, emphasized the critical importance of this initiative in the context of the ever-evolving technological landscape: “As technology continues to evolve, the demand for STEM educators and workers increases. VUU is a proud recipient of this grant from Altria, which will allow us to shape the next wave of innovators in the STEM field.” Seven promising incoming freshmen from various regions, including Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, actively participated in this enriching program: Joseph Allen, Hailey Blackwell, Jayden Evans, Tyrice Fowlkes, Dakota Inniss, Micah Walker, and Jonathan Woodhouse. Throughout the summer institute, these students engaged in a series of immersive STEM-focused labs and workshops, where they had the chance to work with cutting-edge technology, including 3D printers and amplifier construction. These experiences enabled them to cultivate valuable expertise in the domains of electrical and mechanical engineering. As a testament to their dedication and hard work, successful program completion was rewarded with scholarships, providing up to $10,000 in tuition assistance for the upcoming academic year. Dr. Francis Mensah, Associate Professor of Physics and Interim Chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, played a pivotal role as the program manager, collaborating closely with Dr. Ahkinyala Cobb-Abdullah, Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and program supervisor, along with Valencia Clark, Project Coordinator.

20 | VIRGINIA UNION UNIVERSITY 2023 ANNUAL REPORT | ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Dr. Mensah expressed the multifaceted goals of the summer program: “By hosting this summer program, we hope to not only give students a jumpstart in their studies, but also help them with the cost of attending the university. We hope to increase the visibility of VUU and attract more students who are interested in STEM fields.” Joseph Allen, a first-year Cyber Security student hailing from Maryland, was one of the enthusiastic participants in this cohort. Reflecting on his experience, Allen shared, “Prior to applying for this program, I thought our classes were going to be mostly book work. I was surprised at how hands-on most of our projects were and how involved the students were.” To mark the successful culmination of the summer institute, the university organized a closing reception to celebrate the students’ accomplishments and their completion of this enriching program. Joseph Allen also offered words of encouragement to prospective students: “I would encourage other students to just do it. Get a head start on college courses. It will benefit your education going forward.” This sentiment underscores the enduring value of initiatives like the Science and Engineering Summer Institute at Virginia Union University in nurturing the next generation of STEM professionals.

VUU SELECTED TO PARTNER WITH THE HISTORIC FUND’S $10 MILLION EFFORT TO SUPPORT HBCU ENDOWMENT Virginia Union University has been selected as one of nine Historically Black Colleges and Universities to partner with The Historic Fund, a venture capital fund established to help grow HBCU endowments. The $10+ million-dollar effort was designed to invest in HBCUs by providing access to venture capital funds. Nine HBCUs were invited to become limited partners without having to invest their own assets. The fund addresses the “substantial endowment gap between HBCUs and their peer educational institutions” according to The Historic Fund. “Virginia Union is pleased to partner with The Historic Fund in its effort to bridge the endowment gap between HBCUs and colleges throughout the nation,” said President Hakim J. Lucas. “This partnership is a major step toward promoting equity and inclusion among higher education institutions, allowing VUU to forge ahead in its effort to be an innovative developer of scholars, leaders, and lifelong learners of a global society.”

HARTSHORN SCHOLARSHIP HONORS PIONEERS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN’S EDUCATION In a significant tribute to the trailblazing legacy of Joseph and Rachel Hartshorn, Alan and Miriam Pemberton, descendants of the Hartshorn family, established Joseph and Rachel Hartshorn Memorial Scholarship at Virginia Union University. This scholarship aims to celebrate the profound contributions of the Hartshorns, who pioneered African American women’s education in the United States by establishing the first women’s college offering bachelor’s degrees. Joseph and Rachel Hartshorn’s enduring commitment to education and empowerment laid the foundation for the advancement of African American women in higher education. Their dedication to providing opportunities for women, especially in the post-Civil War era, remains an inspiring story of resilience and progress. Hartshorn Memorial College was founded in 1883 in Richmond, Virginia, with a mission to offer African American women access to higher education. This was a time when educational opportunities for women, particularly those of African descent, were scarce. The college played a pivotal role in breaking down barriers and empowering generations of women. The Hartshorn Scholarship at VUU is a testament to the Hartshorns’ unwavering commitment to education and equality. Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of VUU, expressed his excitement about this initiative, saying, “The Hartshorns’ contributions to education and women’s empowerment are immeasurable. We are proud to establish the Hartshorn Scholarship, which will provide opportunities for African American women to access higher education, just as the Hartshorns did over a century ago. This scholarship embodies our commitment to honoring the past while shaping the future.”

FINANCIAL REPORT Virginia Union University continues to focus on fiscal health with a summary of the business model. The goal of the model is to ensure the re- source allocation for the institution maintains a healthy and fiscally responsible position that fuels the way to Best-in-Class. The budget is predicated on a zero-based budget approach that incorporates projected revenues and subsequent constraints. The revenue is indicated by the enrollment mix of incoming and continuing students charged on a per unit cadence. The total cost of attendance is comprised of options chosen by the educational prowess of the student and incorporate a range of tuition, fees, room, and board. All factors are assumed into the model that are calculated into a pre-allocatable sum. The budget of the university utilizes three main categories that are considered prudent to its success. The first and most important category is personnel. Intellectual property is the lifeblood of the university, which is maintained through the largest portion of the budget. The second category of expenses are institutional other than personnel services (OTPS) which include fixed items germane to the continued sustainable operation of the university. The third category involves the strategic initiatives of each Vice President known as divisional OTPS.

The university was not ranked at all just four years ago, when the upward trajectory began: In addition, Virginia Union ranked #24 in the country for advancing social mobility, comparing some 200 national liberal arts universities. Only one Virginia university ranked higher than Virginia Union. “Social mobility” measures the extent to which schools enrolled and graduated students who received federal Pell Grants. These students typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually. Most Pell Grant money goes to students with a total family income below $20,000. “Virginia Union is making dramatic progress toward our goal of being the country’s top HBCU,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President & CEO of Virginia Union University. “This move forward is a testimony to the hard work of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni. Working together, they are propelling this University forward, even while grappling with the pandemic. This is what professionalism looks like, it’s what teamwork looks like, and it’s what love for a university looks like. Make no mistake: We are just getting started.” U.S. News & World Report measures “academic quality using seven categories: outcome measures, graduate indebtedness, assessment by administrators at peer HBCUs, faculty resources, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving. These indicators include input measures that reflect a school’s student body, its faculty and its financial resources, along with outcome measures – such as graduation rates, firstyear student retention rates, graduate indebtedness and social mobility– that signal how well an institution educates students and whether they eventually graduate.”

VUU HISTORICAL TIMELINE 1850

• VUU founded in 1865 to give the newly emancipated freedmen an opportunity for education of the mind in an ethical, religious environment. • The American Baptist Home Mission Society (ABHMS) founded the school in 1865 shortly after Union troops took control of Richmond, Virginia, at the end of the American Civil War.

• The college became the first academic library at an HBCU, building the library in 1865 the same year the college was established. Members of the ABHMS proposed a National Theological Institute to educate freedmen wishing to enter the Baptist ministry. Soon the proposed mission was expanded to offer courses and programs at college, high school, and preparatory levels, to both men and women. This effort was the beginning of Virginia Union University.

• Separate branches of the National Theological Institute were set up in Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Virginia, with classes beginning in 1867. In Washington, the school became known as Wayland Seminary, named in commemoration of Dr. Francis Wayland, former president of Brown University and a leader in the anti-slavery struggle. The first and only president was Dr. George Mellen Prentiss King, who administered Wayland for thirty years (1867–1897). Famous students there included Dr. Booker T. Washington and Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Sr.

• In Richmond, the efforts were more difficult. Beginning in 1867, Colver Institute, a VUU predecessor school, was housed in a

building long known as Lumpkin’s Jail, a former “slave jail” owned by Mary Ann Lumpkin, the African-American widow of the deceased white owner.

• In 1899, the Richmond Theological Institute (formerly Colver Institute) joined with Wayland Seminary of Washington to form Virginia Union University at Richmond.

• In 1932, the women’s college Hartshorn Memorial College, established in Richmond in 1883, became a part of Virginia Union University. • Storer College, a historically black Baptist college in West Virginia (founded in 1867), merged its endowment with Virginia Union in 1964. 1970
