Typology // Residential Location // Bangalore, India Status // Completed 2020 Area // 7000 sq ft Freelance Project Photographed by Karan Gajjar,The Space Tracing Company

Spead across 7000 sqft, the project scope included the interiors, elevation and landscape for an existing civil shell for a bungalow. The project is located in a medium density neighbourhood with mixed residential and commercial use. Hence the client, a family of four, requested for privacy from the surrounding areas while simultaneously being able to enjoy the refreshing natural elements of the city. Degrees of privacy have also been maintained in the interior of the space. Living formats have been primarily explored here as

spaces are consciously defined as private, semi-private and public zones. Spread across three floors, with very large volumes, the spaces have been made to feel cosy by introducing levels in the bedrooms and in some of the public areas. This also serves to highlight the functions in that area, further exaggerating the experience. Flooring has also been used to connect and define spatial arrangements. Overall material palette used is of natural stone, marble, wood and metal.

Living & Dining Room Our design concept harmoniously weaves together the client’s passion for gardens, a love for intimate common areas, and a deep connection to spirituality. The formal living room, dining room, and temple are seamlessly linked to the lush green surroundings through a single flooring strip. With a deliberate layout centered around each space, the dining and living areas offer captivating views of the garden, framing the serene “temple tree” (plumeria) at one end and the temple at the other. When closed, the doors reveal a stunning brass inlaid tree on the shutters, creating a visual homage to the sacred “temple tree.”

Daughter’s Room The room is conceived as a threshold that seamlessly integrates with the balcony. A short platform beneath the four-poster bed balances the room’s volume, extending outside to create balcony seating. Elevation louvers, strategically positioned outside the room, serve the dual purpose of ensuring privacy while regulating the influx of sunlight into the space.

Son’s Room In crafting this room, a functional platform delineates the study and bed areas. Employing mirrors on the bed base creates a striking illusion of levitation, adding a touch of whimsy to the space. The bed’s back seamlessly integrates with the study platform, cleverly concealing clutter. A bay window seating enhances the room, offering a tranquil space for relaxation amid a thoughtfully designed environment.

Lounge The lounge is envisioned as a versatile space accommodating a bar, a large-screen TV for group entertainment, and a poker table. An unconventional plan delineates zones through innovative flooring and ceiling treatments, extending certain functions outdoors for an inside-outside ambiance. Storage is seamlessly integrated as a design element, serving both aesthetic and functional purposes to facilitate the seamless hosting of large groups in this dynamic space.

Plan Type In response to the brief demanding a multifunctional space for promotional events and pop up displays, the plan type was conceptualised with a provision for an existing permanent display with either all or part of it being movable so as to make the space transformative. The display was also designed to allow multiple settings to make it dynamic as per the change in clothing collection. Four display modules integrated with two collapsible trial rooms formed the final arrangement which slid in and out as per the arragement needed. Bhaane & Veg Non Veg|

The Kiosk Keeping in mind the street element, the cafe front was enviosioned as a minimal kiosk in terms of form but with notched bracket elements and joinery to form a well crafted object - an idirect representation of the brand. The lines and form are versatile enough to even function as a conventional bar during events. Functionally the kiosk has two levels. One for preparing the coffee and smoothie bowls and the other for serving. The kiosk is made in plywoood and polished to maintain the material palette and not overpower the neon installation.

The Edge at Alila Diwa Interior Refurbishment

Typology // Hospitality Location // Goa, India Status // Completed 2022 Area // 3950 sq ft Busride Design Studio

The design concept for the refurbishment of the poolside bar and restaurant in the 5-star hotel, Alila Diwa, located in Goa revolved around drawing inspiration from the breathtaking view of the surrounding paddy fields. Nestled next to these lush fields, the goal is to maximize this captivating scenery and transform the space into an all-day haven for guests.

The interior concept was to create a harmonious ambiance that complements the beauty of the surroundings. The color scheme draws inspiration from the vibrant greens and earthy tones of the paddy fields, creating a tranquil, relaxing and airy atmosphere. An exploration of materials like wood, cane and terrazzo not only echo the palette of the existing hotel but are also incorporated into the design to further 38

enhance the connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Custom dyed green ombre wall panels and brass shelving, dotted with more plants and paddy related artefacts, form the backdrop for the dining experience. The barfront is a simple yet iconic exploration of custom terrazzo panels with a fluted profile and bottle green chips to reference the paddy.

The rough-textured wall plaster serves as a focal point, mimicking the ruggedness of a cave while adding character and warmth to the space. It provides a tactile experience for clients and visitors. Industrial-style metal shelving units are strategically placed throughout the salon. These shelves not only serve as functional storage but also contribute to the overall aesthetic by adding an edgy and utilitarian vibe. To introduce an unexpected element, living plant walls are incorporated into the design. Lush greenery contrasts with the industrial elements, bringing a touch of nature to the space. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also promotes a sense of relaxation. Industrial arms are fitted throughout the salon, each serving multiple purposes. They hold lighting fixtures to create a warm and intimate ambiance. Additionally, they feature tray surfaces for holding grooming tools, mirrors and cup holders for client convenience, and playful decorative items to infuse a sense of quirkiness. The color palette predominantly features shades of gray, which evoke a sense of sophistication and timelessness. Complemented by rustic finishes, the gray tones create a harmonious balance between modernity and classic masculinity.
