DESIGN INFERENCES • Huge trees provide shade and cool spaces which can be used as comfortable outdoor spaces • Site perimeter borders the road, hence the site will be susceptible to traffic noise. Masses to reduce noise and quiet spaces towards the inner parts of site •
A thick masonry stone boundary can help deaden the sound of traffic

An out of sight, out of mind approach can be taken by carefully landscaping the front area and hiding the road

• Filled with greenery, it is a generally pleasant view from a high point, aka. a balcony or terrace can be built

• Lot of traffic can be seen and heard during peak hours; 7-9 AM and 6-8 PM
• Access can be placed along the yellow perimeter, but it can only be opened at 1 or 2 points, as to not disturb the auto rickshaws that wait there

Climate Analysis • Masses towards the south and west of the plot will get most shade, so open spaces can be positioned here, while built masses are towards the road • Rest of the plot receives a lot of sunlight, so a cover or diffuser would be necessary • Heavy materials to act as a shelter and create heat lag • Upper ventilation to allow air flow without much effect from air pollutants • Courtyards according to shading and season to allow accommodating outdoor conditions • Protection against rain using plinth or waterproof construction technology to counter up to 50 mm rainfall

Form Development
1. Residence is placed towards the back, so that commercial block acts as a noise barrier as a comfort factor for the clients
2. Building is shaped along the border of site as a smooth curve to remove any sharp corners or unpleasant spaces
3. Inner courtyard added, acts as a calm open space with filtered traffic noise and vertical connection between floors. Also brings diffused light, ventilation and views to rooms opening into it.

Site - Gulab Sagar, Jodhpur, Rajasthan Gulabsagar is one of the lakes in Jodhpur, Rajasthan and is a major tourist point. A café here would attract locals and tourists both, due to its location. There is also a public courtyard adjoining the site which is used as an entrance. Traditional elements like arches, jaalis, chhajjas, chabutras and courtyard were used which are vernacular elements of Jodhpur. These are used as decorative elements, cooling elements and sun shading devices. Jodhpur has hot and dry climate with temperature ranging from 4045 degrees Celsius for about 8 months, which makes the seating locations extremely important, since they should not be placed in direct heat. 50

The shadow analysis shows that the street side is often shaded, but it may not be usable since it will be quite noisy. The lake side is nicely lighted, since it isn’t direct light, but some sun protection techniques were needed. Since there is low light coming from kund side, more openings were given there. Form Development
Courtyard is carved out from the site area. This is extended along a linear axis connecting the courtyard to the kund. Acts as a ventilation module, shading device as well as intermediate space for interaction and circulation.
A viewing deck on the terrace for an unobstructed view on all sides and especially of the Mehrangarh fort.

An lower deck is made to create an immersive experience with the sagar. This is made without disrupting views from inner seating.
The upper floor is shaped along the one below, and provides cantilevers and cut outs. These are made with views towards courtyard, sagar and kund in mind.
Pushing the U form back, and creating an open deck, allows for more interaction with the surrounding views and natural ambience.
