ABOUT ME Six years ago I finished my degree in Architectural Engineering in Athens, Greece.

My interests in urban planning had already led me to Copenhagen and now to Stockholm to further deepen my knowledge in the field. The challenges of urban planning and design and how it should be applied are my highest motivation.

My interest for an inclusive, interdisciplinary and democratic way of planning is strong and I will always work towards that goal.

I am getting ready to get the degree of masters in urbanism, and I consider myself more of a masterplanner than an architect, in that I am interested in the whole picture and all the steps of the process of creation. I want to be involved from the first sketch to the last stone to be put in realization. I also enjoy working in a team and I value the eorts and the quality of collaboration. Through hard work and teamwork I look forward to fulfilling my ideal of daily learning.

I enjoy creating projects intended for everyone. Throughout my academic years I have sought to implement movement into my works. I believe that the sense of being able to go wherever one likes, gives a strong feeling of freedom, something that I would like visitors to feel in any of my projects. Free movement within the site area or within the project has become an additional objective itself to those of each project. With smaller or bigger success, I take care in making this visible within this portfolio.

I can now say that I am proud to be a professional architect and urban planner and to be able to contribute in making the world a better place.

Landscape project

The aim of this study is to replace the existing shades, installed under no specific plan, by shopkeepers in cooperation with the competent bodies, with new ones. These will add architectural value to the squares, offering, at the same time, comfort, a friendly environment and safety, fitting harmoniously into the existing landscape, serving the needs of a general aesthetic improvement of their surroundings.

Furthermore, in specific positions there will be placed water jets, in order to create areas of interest, game and leisure activities. These will support the creation of a friendly microclimate both for humans and the local fauna.

Modular Shading System Arta, Greece

It is well known that the existence of water elements in public spaces inspire feelings of relaxation and mental uplifting, reduces the heat island effect, aesthetically enhances the area and brings man a step closer to his natural environment.

Proposal: Our proposal specifies in detail a particular hexagonal-shaped model, covering a total area of about 10.40 sq.m.

The hexagonal shape is based on motifs of Byzantine architecture, which is present everywhere you look around the historical town of Arta.

Moreover, this form serves a possible organic expansion or removal of these shades, in case future changes occur on the surface allowed by the municipality to the tenants. All this may happen without reducing their aesthetic value, both individually and as a whole, which has been one of our main purposes from the very beginning.

Finally, this modular-hexagonal form of the shades, plus the speciďŹ c area covered by them, is facilitating a clear and smooth integration of the existing trees into the overall organic sinthesis, creating a new, harmonic landscape, dialoging with the existing one.

Materials: The frame of the modular shading system is impregnated natural wood, while the shading system itself is pvc blackout membrane. All assembly is done with metal wrapped elements and beam cases.

Lighting: Linear LED ligting will embrace the modular borders both on their roof and the ground. With this gesture our shades will provide a clear idea of their existence, during the night, as an openspace room for relaxation and entertainment.

Wujiang East Lake Tai Ecological

Tourism Resort

The establishment of a future landmark in the southeast of Jiangsu Province, that will host almost 500,000 visitors annually, becoming the Most Ecological Charm in Lakeside of Lake Tai, has been our focus point for our design choices.

Proper planning, engineering, and management for sustainable pocket beaches -public and private sand-filled beach cells- has been one of our priorities, since they can assure a long-term coastal stability and a high quality coastal environment.

High quality native plant communities will attract new flora and fauna to the area, providing them with shelter, food, and breeding grounds.

Increasing biodiversity would support a number of natural ecosystem processes and services like air quality, climate control, water purification, pollination, and aesthetic appeal.

Sidewalks will be covered with permeable concrete, a sufficient enough choice to support water management. Local granite and wooden paving will complete the aesthetical value of the project.

Accessibility will improve local transportation, especially walking. Eco-friendly lighting will add safety and lead the way towards hidden treasures, such as open-air art pavilions, pathways and stand-points viewing the open horizon. Void and dense areas will complete one another in order to add a strong sense of identity.

Our ďŹ nal goal has been to enhance the existing lake shoreline by using appropriate art and design languages to express a humanistic and vibrant spirit for the new waterfront town. The challenge of mixing both modern development, using the most cutting-edge techniques, and traditional culture has been revealing in order to create a dynamic and ornamental space.

Article about the urban renewal project in Stockholm, Sweden

Sweden can benefit from Greece

Sweden is, like all countries, facing constant problems of coming into conflict with its history.

An example of this is Slussen in Stockholm and the urban planning project which is being debated much in almost 2 years now, but in reality for more than 30 years, since the 70 s.

Another city with much history is Athens.

Both Stockholm and Athens are marked by modernist ideas and forms, and both cities are criticized in modern times because of it because Modernistic ideas appears to be outdated.

The current philosophy is that everything old should be demolished to build new, more attractive architecture to global interest, where form and design has the main role. But it is not the only solution to the current structure.

The other way is to look back and learn from the old and try to improve the city through seeing and knowing a little more about itself.

In Stockholm they had architectural competitions and many new proposals draw Slussen to look in more modern times.

Slussen and the winning entry in the design competition that took place 2 years ago, by architecture firm Foster + Partners, has been the subject of discussions on urban design and how it should be exercised since, and has been severely criticized by the Stockholm citizens who think the proposal does not justify Slussen and what it means for the city. [...]

[...]There have been many attempts to improve the city, but large urban planning projects can not be implemented as easily because the city already has evolved so much and thus is limited to areas outside the city or the city s edges. One of the attempts to improve the city is doing it by focusing on its history.

What they want to do in Greece is to connect all the important archaeological sites so that they form a link that works as an outdoor museum of Athens history. It sounds very ambitious, but what is interesting is that Athens has been forced to look at itself in a whole new meaning because of its archaeological history.

By seeing the city as a whole archaeological site served as a link between areas of Athens that right now does not fulfill its function and has become a land mark in the modern city. Athens lacks the links, to its history, from area to area.

In Stockholm Slussen plays just that role, the link between the Old Town and New Town.

Slussen is not only a timely place in Stockholm, but it has maintained all transport ways in Stockholm and tied together the Old Town and the Southern Center for so many years.

Stockholm should take a closer look at its history and consider Slussen as a part of its new history as a city of global business in the economic, tourism and social life. As Athens is trying to do, although in that case, there is no other option.

Slussen has fulfilled its function as a link between the Old City and the new city very well. Faithful to the modernization of current architecture the swedish government wants to have a complete change of Slussen and therefore architectural competitions have taken place to transform the area. [...]

The present study is an investigation of the urban space. It aims at composing a method of finding the problems of the urban space and organizing action to answer to them under a single sustainable system.

With the term single system we define a harmonized composition of actions which organize the intervention in the urban space.

The actions should answer to the problems and to be able to unite with the city without interrupt it.

The study confronts the city as a living organism which changes eternally.

At the same time it considers its basic urban structure already formed. Connecting these two parameters, the proposed system intends to serve as a filter which will function as a frame for its evolvement.

The city reflects its history, society, geography, and thus changes from place to place.

The appearance of the system presupposes that it appears with a scalable intensity depending on the urban structure that concerns each time. In some cases, when the environment is bearable or positive the system disappears.

The system s adaptability and flexibility are its primary characteristics.

Equally important is its universality.

No part of the city could accept the system without the condition that the whole city can have it. This condition aims at avoiding the possibility of gentrification of some part of the city. As a result it reassures that the land uses and the real estate values do not change. If the former do not change, a region s population does not change respectively. Furthermore, the application has to be gradual, so as to exist enough time for the possible errors to appear and to be corrected and to bond the changes into the city structure more effectively.

The elementary financial and constructional rationalism is one of the key characteristics of the typical athens multi-storey building in terms of morphology. It functions as a structural manifesto governed by general rules. Both aesthetical and functional criteria formed the construcional norms on which the multi-storey construction is based. This system ended in being a closed system which formed a mold for the reproduction of this type of residence while at the same time was portraited as the best, the unique.

The cell of urban construction in Athens is the city block.

The Greek housing building is a construction type that offers simplicity and economy of manufacture and a significant life length, it is a standard to repeat indefinitely, the basis for a new folk architecture.

Although initially specified for housing, the Greek π ο λ υ κ α τ ο ι κ ί α through its flexible system offers countless alternatives for usages such as: home, office, department, store, crafts store, restaurant, office, workshop, supermarket, cafe, fast food shop, furniture showroom , bar or garage.

This is the realistic response to a real issue, the upgrade of the quality of life in a massive - and yet private- housing system. Sanitation, heating, functionality: requirements that are necessary to modern life. The building as an open system, offers maximum comfort in minimal space.

Character of the system.

Protecting the environmental conditions.

In an already determined construction of a building, we come to propose tools that easily adjust to it.

On cold winter nights, the house loses large amounts of heat to the atmosphere by radiation.

Conversely, in summer, solar radiation raises the temperature of the concrete by tens of degrees above the temperature of the air.

Adding shading panels and plantation on the facade and the roof this contrast in temperature can be higly reduced. These simple tools are proposed that do not alter the construction of the building as a shell but provides a good thermal insulation.

Formation in three stages The assumption that the system appears where it is necessary and with the appropriate intensity to answer to this need, led to the formation of three stages. These stages reflect the evolutionary phases required for its application, both architecturally and socially.

Briefly, in the first stage, the intentions are spatialy expressed and the goal is for the citizens to experience qualities of the space that will then become part of their everyday routine.

It has the meaning of an introductory meeting with the space and an educational meaning in relation to spatial experiences that may follow to become spaces themselves The second stage is the expression of the system, architecturally in urban Athens of today. All proposals responding to problems, are expressed here and are organized into a coherent system, functionally and morphologically. At this point, the possible mutations are identified and depending on the background encountered and thus its breadth of its versatility is determined.

The third stage is the most comprehensive and radical version of the system. It is developed with greater intensity and freedom and is addressed to a society with reflects towards greater spacial qualities and communal claims than today.

The research is based on six city blocks (counting clockwise from 1 to 6) in Athens that hold dierent qualities of urban environment and social urban context. The dierent conditions between them will make the system, versatile enough to adapt to any situation of urban formation.

“Stage One ”

Residents of an urban area are ignorant of the latent potential that their neighborhood posess, potential qualities that can be brought to everyday life in just a few steps. perception of space

To understand the significance of such a change in the city, one should first have experience of different spatial qualities.

Each property s free space could transform into a whole new place for citizens to actually habitate their own property,their own city block, a place which is up to the moment isolated,abandoned almost hostile.

We believe that most importantly, to achieve an urban well-being, the resident has to be given the freedom of movement in the city, his city.

In this direction, we first propose a system of steel structure that has the character of a happening and is uncovered inside the block.

The structure is forming a system of grids that are supported upon the walls that separate each property and allows the habitant to move over these limits. This way it is giving a totally new spatial experience between the private and the public, visually trespassing the property that keeps everything away from the most vital area of the block.

The first stage of our research, in a minimalistic way, makes the habitant aware of the possibilities that exist in the same space he inhabits.

2 “Stage Two”

The entrance to the city block and the movement within it is an extremely critical issue for its re-habitation and integration to the daily lives of the residents.

By researching the area we found that there are two possible ways of approaching the courtyard of a city block. One way is by the natural openings made by empty land plots or demolished buildings, and the other way is by the pillotis of newly risen buildings. It is highly rare to not find one of these two openings in a city block.

Movements: horizontal-vertical / bottom-up.

Courtyard: an open area of ground surrounded by walls or buildings.

Regarding the movement, we recognize three directions: horizontal movement at street level or courtyard level, the horizontal plane of the roof and the vertical which links the previous two.

The routes of movement operate as a key component of designing space. They define the flow of traffic and determine on both their sides the functions and uses needed.

Movement : a change in place or position.

There are two types of pathways. The ďŹ rst is wider and receives an eminently public traďŹƒc into one block, going up to the roof level where it continues its movement. The second one handles the smaller movements which lead to private space.

The paths are implemented with a system of metal cell trays. The material is chosen for two reasons. Because of factory production that allows the systematization of size and its logic of construction, and because of the transparency that the perforated surfaces give, which allows visual contact with the natural terrain and the natural processes of transpiration and drainage.

Stage Two: Façade

Façade : the exterior side of a building.

As the system approaches the vertical direction it applies itself to problems that occur.

The existing structures suffer from high levels of heat capacity which result in severe energy loss all year round. The sun overheats the building, causing a distressful environment to the habitants. The means the habitants use to ease this situation are shading parts and plants.

Through the use of recycled metallic particles and clinging heat-resistant plants, native in greece, with the aid of shading parts, a very effective sunshading system and therefore energy control can be achieved.

The system evolves the present situation and creates a construction that implements the shading parts and plantation to its form.

The apartments that lie in the core of the building are provided with a system of vertical shading parts that control the quantity of sunlight the habitant needs.

The top apartments, the penthouses are provided with a system that involves plantation for shading, as to not interrupt the visual contact with the geometric shape called the building.

Rooftop : the upper, outer surface of a building.

Visiting the rooftop is a crucial experience concerning one s orientation in the city, as the urban horizon tends to be incorporated in the line defined by the most distant buildings.

The system continues from where the vertical system of the façade meets the system at the rooftop providing shade.

Movement on the rooftop follows the same structure as to that within the city block dividing uses of recreational purpose on each side of the rooftop.

Along with the external configuration of space, the reuse of any buildings on the top of the stairs is encouraged with their transformation into heated rooms of residents assembly, offering dining, entertainment, movies projection and discussion points.

In small scale, it can create new public places for the residents incorporating modern facilities in response to modern collective needs. In large scale it can offer new movement into the urban fabric, new emotional places, new landmarks, subverting the current two-dimensional geography of public space.

Through architecture, we can shape a new collective city space - above.

The ďŹ nal model we created for Stage Two of our research contains elements of all our operations on the city block and the urban environment.

The model is intentionally made in perspective view so that it enhances the view of the observer and the feeling of a city atmosphere. To closely resemble the urban environment was a very important factor in our work because that would help realize the true picture and help integrate our work to the highest level.

The third stage is the completion of the he he vision for the city that this study sets, in the sense that the proposals are addressed in re a society conscious of the need for a more sustainable urban environment. ns The design is bolder and gives intentions nd and ideas fully liberalized of institutional and es local customary practices. The basic principles he and intentions have not changed but the re expression of the system becomes more complete.

This stage allows more radical changes on the urban fabric such as lightening the volume of the building by removing walls, creating public spaces within the buildings themselves accessible through the inner staircase.

The system of shadings and the restructuring of the inner free spaces of the city blocks take a more full form providing a total upliftment of the city block, making it a whole different urban environment.

How is urban planning practiced today?

Is it democratic?

There are certainly different ways of practicing urban planning in todays cities and societies. The question, why there are so many different theories and acts about it can be answered with a definition of society.

“Society is the totality of social relationships between people.“ That which shapes the society is the power relations, relations which greatly simplified, are determined by economic factors and merit positions.

Society experienced the problems and consequences of rational design and modern architecture and with its reactions put the issue of democracy in the foreground.

The need to involve the citizen will judge whether this is the solution to the democratization of design or if you need to lead to more radical forms and we will try to answer the question: What is the position of the citizen in contemporary urban planning?”

Theory of Social Relations “excerpt from thesis project...”

Giddens argues that we are not as isolated or autonomous as we think. We all live within social relations and these inevitably affect us.

Our association with other people and the natural world gives meaning to the sense of ones self.

Foucault presents the structure of power relations as external forces acting on autonomous individuals. Giddens argues instead that power relations act upon us through social relations in which we live and are the structures that surround us.

The social relationships created between people create stories and memories classified as bonds that unite different aspects of each other.

These bonds carry power relations from one life to another.

The ‘context’ is thus actively constituted through our actions. We are equally entangled and consisting of the structural forces that reach us through social relationships in which we live.

The structure is therefore within us.

As a result, social relations embody ways of thinking and sets of principles.

These ways of thinking have, perhaps, the greatest power of all, for example, as rational thinking , in the 20th century, could allow the perception that the public sphere was the domain of men, and the private sector for women, or that social status and position is hereditary and that the attainment of wealth is the primary objective of social effort and those that succeed will be given a higher position in society.

So at best, through practicing design, the designers not only bring forth strong power relations, as described by Foucault. For Giddens, they also have the option to change them.

Thus, in design, even the smallest details include delicate and daily choices about whether to follow the rules or change them and redesign the structure.

What is the type of urban planning that needs city and what the position of society on this?

Of the two types of design that I researched it is easy to understand one their beliefs and their existence, but it’s diďŹƒcult to understand if they are correct or not in their implementation, as this depends on the conditions of the society in which they were formed. But what can rightly be said is that they are surely the design types that mark each era respectively and define it in terms of perception to the relations of power and society.

Their juxtaposition justifies their natural continuation on the development of urban design, considering that they emerged under similar poolitical and economic conditions.

The social conditions are though these which changed and developed planning theories. But within the same power relations, under the same economic system where they were formed, it is diďŹƒcult to achieve greater change than that of participatory planning. If the power relations and the public perception of them do not change we will never be able to fully democratize urban planning. Nowadays, with the rational design considered an outdated practice but still applied and participatory design making tentative moves rather than radical ones to democratize the field, the reasonable question arises:

What is the future of urban planning and what is the position of the society in modern urban planning?

The future of design is inevitably tied to society.

The relationship of urban planning with society is interrelated and this is reflected in the 20th century with successive social changes. The dynamic of society has proven to be the most important element of the city with the ability to shape and demand changes.

A strong democracy assures the existence of conflicts.

Urban planning is inevitably associated with conflict: by researching collisions in the design and understanding that design can act constructively in conflictual relationships the rising urban example of design may be created.

The understanding of democracy and the role of design in it should be based on considerations that place the conflict and power in central role, as suggested by Foucault. A planning process, which will be practical and ready for conflict is a greater example of design theory than one being incoherent, and dependent consent.

Exploring the power relations the idea that urban planning can be implemented in a constructive way is presented, but not without taking these relations into account.

Participatory planning is considered to be a democratic proposal of planning and a removal of limits on authoritarian power, between strong and weak. This proposal includes the improvement of means of communication rather than conflict. The problem that occurs in the existing political, social and economic environment is still the existence of power relations and the nonutilization of the dynamic of society. These relationships, as shaped by modernism and supported by rational design, are still existing with main influence the financial system.

A necessary condition for the development of urban planning towards a more democratic process is for all to understand that it operates with power relations and within them. It must be understood what these relationships are, how they affect the design and by whom they are diffused. Theories as the ‘fair city’ movement bring back to the forefront the power relations theory of Foucault and the dynamics of society as the driving force of urban planning.

Power relations, perhaps more than ever, as elaborated and developed after modernism, are influenced and determined by the financial system. Little matter would the influence the financial system have if it wasn’t affecting social relations. At this time it is necessary for urban design to understand and acknowledge social stratification.

Society should again be an important structural element on the configuration of the city.

The social dynamic has been recognized by the mid-20th century with social movements of that time, which were able to change much of the perception of the authorities and power relations.

A theory that works with the right conditions for the good of the city and society, is one that takes into account the dynamics of society, city and relations power.

The interest in the integration of social participation in urban planning has its roots in liberal democracy but it is much more a consequence of increasing pressure from society that a more active involvement of the residents is necessary to strengthen planning. To complete the goal for a realistic participation of society we must redefine the role and capacity of the citizen in the process. The boundary between the design authorites and citizens must disappear and hierarchy ignored to achieve a genuine dialogue with all stakeholders in the design process.

The citizen must be integrated into the design process early and in an active way.

Citizens’ participation should be done with the greatest possible equality because neither the planner nor design is objective because they have subjective consideration. Also, the power of knowledge should be redefined and interaction of different types of knowledge should be tested.

The knowledge and experience of cizitesn are elements different than the academic experience and can provide a more realistic picture of local conditions not only focusing on the problems and the solutions. This will eliminate the subjectivity of planners.

What is needed, is not the public reaction to claim its position in the design, such as Foucault suggests, nor a better form of communication as proposed by Giddens and Habermas, but the introduction of equality and democracy at all levels of society in order to exploit this dynamic.

Center for Environmental Education and Recreation

Taksiarches is a village in Arcadia, which to this day retains original features and aesthetic values of the architectural tradition of the region.

The aim of this project is to design a center for environmental education and recreation which has to integrate with the built and natural environment.

The issue of integration is that the architectural forms will be compatible with existing buildings but will restore and renew the spirit of the place.

Basic principle of the composition is to maintain the fabric of the region (movements and viewpoints) and the creation of a public space, center for local residents.

The buildings have been placed to resemble the network that the existing buildings in the village create.

Each bulding creates space around it that can be approached by the visitors in many ways, allowing the existing network to unite with the project, and by having more than one entrances to each building, we are giving the impression of the old village where you can take two dierent paths to reach the same destination.

Key feature to these axis of movement are three stone walls made of local material that demarcate areas of the project.

Each stone wall is attached to one of the buildings and show the main axes towards a viewpoint.

The buildings size resembles that of the village but the material modernizes its aesthetic.

The entry building is completely made of steel and wood, open to the view, the second one with the resting rooms is made out of concrete. Both are modern materials incorporating new architecture into the village.

The third one incorporates elements of both materials having one concrete wall and the opposite one made out of stone, ďŹ nalizing the roof with a steel structure.
