oomis Trail Golf Club is the northernmost course on the West Coast, just three miles from the Canadian border. It draws about an equal number of golfers from Whatcom County as it does from Vancouver and southern British Columbia. It has been considered one of the top courses in the state, establishing a solid reputation for accessibility, affordability and quality of play. Tee sheets have been reliably filled for years, but that all changed during this decade when the Canadians either couldn’t or wouldn’t play the course. “We went through COVID, and that was rough when the border was closed,” said Justin Conlan, Loomis Trail director of golf. “Then everything opened back up and businesses came back, and we were really better than ever. Then politics got in the way.’’ When the current administration took over in 2025, trade wars among the two nations forced folks on both sides to back away from the border. Commerce and communications among what were once friendly neighbors degenerated. “It put a big damper on things last spring. Summer was good. We were able to fill the tee sheet. We kind of got through it,” Conlan added. “It really has been rough on Blaine, Ferndale, Bellingham, the whole county. You really see it the closer you get to the border. “Certainly, there’s a lot of people who voice opinions on either side, but I think a lot of the Canadians coming down have been coming down here for years, supporting the Whatcom County area, and understand it’s not us making those decisions so why punish local businesses. I think the course value and accessibility drove people back.” The quality of the golf course is the primary reason the Canadians have returned. Designed by Canadian architect Graham Cooke, Loomis Trail opened in 1993. It was part of the two-course Semiahmoo Resort complex. In 2018, the Lummi Nation purchased Loomis and its adjacent 15-room boutique hotel for $3.75 million to be used as a guest amenity for its Silver Reef Casino. Like so many courses around the state that have been purchased by Native American tribes, the cash infusion helped upgrade the maintenance and subsequent quality of play. The layout plays fast and firm and features a unique large double green at holes 10 and 17. Here’s Conlan’s snapshot six-question perspective on Loomis Trail.
Toughest Tee Shot — 2nd hole I would say the par-5 (562 yards) No. 2. There’s a pond right in the landing area. You can play it out left with an iron or fairway wood. It’s a big sweeping dogleg right, so you can play it safely out left. It gives you kind of a narrow, longish second shot. Or you can be more aggressive and try to hit driver over the pond. That can open up the width of the fairway but hit it too far and it can go through the fairway into some dense vegetation. You have to hit a good shot.
Best Birdie Opportunity — 11th hole No. 11 (par 5, 506 yards). It’s a short par 5 with a split fairway. Depending on your tees played, if you are long enough to hit it down the left side, a lot of golfers can get it there in two. It definitely gives you a good opportunity to make birdies.
Best Par 3 — 12th hole No. 12 (255 yards) is probably one of the best and toughest par 3s in the Northwest. From the back tee box, it’s 255 yards and is one of the holes that is exposed (to the elements). There’s almost always a breeze there. There’s a big pond at the green and a water hazard left of the green. There’s not much margin for error. It’s definitely a challenging start to the back nine.
Favorite Hole — 13th hole My favorite hole is probably No. 13 (par 4, 358 yards). It’s kind of a risk/reward. You can hit driver and get it over a pond, with a chip shot to the green. But if you don’t make it, you’re in the water. If you miss right, you’re in the trees. It’s a fun birdie opportunity. You can play conservatively and have a short iron into the green. It’s a long narrow green, so hitting full shots into that green is hard to get the ball to the hole location.
Emergency Nine — front or back? The front is cool because holes one through four are kind of in a loop. You can stop after four, you can do a nine-hole loop and stop, or you do 11 and stop. The front gives you the opportunity to just play four, nine or 11.

Toughest Tee Shot — 11th hole There are really two of them, No. 11 and No. 17. I think 11 is the toughest. It’s just people’s nemesis hole. It’s a par-5 (490 yards) with a ravine in the middle, water on the left, woods on the right. If you can hit the ball, you can definitely reach the ravine. If you’re too far left, you’re in the woods; if you’re too far right, you’re in the woods. It’s a small margin.
Best Birdie Opportunity — 5th hole It’s got to be hole No. 5, par-5 (461 yards). It’s pretty wide open. If you’re in the fairway, you’ve got a chance at a birdie. It’s a reachable par-5.
Best Par 3 — 3rd hole I’d say No. 3 (220 yards). It’s the best and the hardest. You hit from an elevated tee to the green, from the blue tees. There’s water on the right, sand trap on the left and back. It seems like everyone struggles on No. 3. My friend’s dad used to say, “it’s the easiest par-5 on the course.”
Favorite Hole — 18th hole My favorite hole on the course is No. 18 (par-4, 350 yards). Just for the camaraderie. There’s a hill on the back of the green. When our men’s club plays our Sunday tournaments, everyone sits on top of that hill, right above the green. We’re heckling each other, having a good time, having fun. Maybe 40-50 guys with their carts on top of that hill. Players are hitting into that gallery.
Emergency Nine — front or back? Front nine is my choice. There’s a lot more hills, a lot more undulation out there. Everything funnels to the center.
Go-To Lunch Item — on the clubhouse menu Our burgers for sure. We get a special blend from Double DD Meats in Lynnwood. These beauties are popular with the locals and very good.

A Bucket with the Owner • Wes Regan
es Regan, who owns and operates the Gleneagle Golf Course in Arlington — along with his parents Pat and Kathy Regan — has a simple objective for his course. “My ultimate goal is to be one of the best golf courses in Snohomish County, if not the state,” Wes said. Based on what the Regans have accomplished, just in the past seven years, Wes believes, “we’re really on the right path on what we can accomplish.” That path for the Regans started a couple decades ago when they ran several businesses in the area, including the restaurant at Cedarcrest Golf Course. But lease issues with the city in 2009 ultimately caused them to depart, taking over Gleneagle Bar and Grill. At that time, the Grill was not a first-thought option for many of their neighbors in the 1,100 homes that surrounded the course. They needed their support to survive. The Regans improved the menu, remodeled the space — separating the bar from the dining room to entice more families — and established an efficient food delivery system to area homes. The course, designed by Bill Teufel, also needed a rescue. The greens were among the finest in the state when it opened in 1993, but the Regans struggled to maintain that reputation. “We had the best greens with the smallest crew,” Wes said. Wes, head pro Paul Melohusky and a couple full-time maintenance workers handled the bulk of the improvements and maintenance of the course. Their most important investment was a larger tractor that could handle many major tasks. They cleaned out all the traps, improved drainage and mowing patterns. Wes did every job he could, from mowing to cooking to delivering. The work ethic was always there. As was the motivation, the ideas and the level of care. But everything necessary couldn’t always be there all at once. “It just takes a lot of money, a lot of time and we’re working as fast as we can to improve this course,” Wes said. “Dad is the money guy. He’s the one who makes sure we don’t spend too much so we can survive every year. That’s the biggest thing. Without him, we wouldn’t be in the position we are in right now.” The Regans finally took over the whole operation in December 2019 — just weeks before Covid devastated the world. But Pat (‘the money guy’), Kathy (‘the face of the place’) and Wes (the self-described ‘talker’) brought the club through the pandemic with the motto, “A Public Course with a Private Feel.” “We treat everyone like family,” Wes added.

Lewis River at 50: Built, broken, and now better than ever
his year marks the 50th anniversary of the Lewis River Golf Course, about 30 minutes north of Portland in southwest Washington. It has taken nearly that long to enjoy sustained success. The course was originally just nine holes, designed by Ralph Stading in 1967. The Stading family would own and operate the course for more than four decades. Golfers’ reactions were positive to the new course, but it was clear early on that another nine was necessary. That was finished in 1969, believed to be with the influence of noted Northwest golf designer Ted Robinson. Denise Miller, the course’s chief operations officer, said disaster struck in 1996 “when a devastating 200-year flood (from the Lewis River) swept through the area, washing away nearly the entire back nine.’’ The Stading family completely rebuilt most of the back nine, and by 2000 also had refashioned three holes on the front. The result was a virtually new and improved layout. In 2000, another misfortune struck. A fire destroyed the golf shop and restaurant. They were rebuilt in 2001. The Stading family sold the course to the Cowlitz Indian Tribe in 2015. The Tribe operated it for six years before Portland businessman Matthew Dumke purchased it in 2021, during the height of Covid. He launched a long-term vision for the course that included improvements to the irrigation system, the greens and clubhouse. “The driving range has been renovated to be user-friendly year-round,’’ Miller said. “A new chipping area is set to be completed this season to help golfers warm up their short game, while the 17th hole has been restored to its former beauty after a recent renovation on the ponds.’’ Miller added that other upgrades include the conversion of a water hazard along the second green into a grass bunker, and significant renovations to the clubhouse, with the restaurant now open seven days a week. Even though the course is just five minutes off I-5, exit 21, it is an environmental haven between the Lewis River and the Cascades foothills. The lush, tree-lined layout is 6,473-yards long with enough water hazards to prompt bringing another sleeve.
Toughest Tee Shot — 10th hole No. 10, a 504-yard, par-5. Dogleg left around 220 yards out. If your drive is too short or along the left side, trees can block the approach.
Best Birdie Opportunity — 7th hole No. 7, 190 yards, longest among the four par 3s. Trees along the left side, marsh across the middle of the fairway.
Best Par 3 — 3rd hole No. 3, 165 yards. Straight drive through a corridor of trees, with two bunkers guarding the front and one on the right side.
Favorite Hole — 13th hole No. 13, a 393-yard par 4. Short but trees encroach at various points along both sides of the fairway.
Emergency Nine — front or back? For those who might want to score, the front side has just one par 5, a relatively short 456 yards. The back nine is more than 500 yards longer, with two par 5s, including one of the longest holes in the Northwest — the 649-yard 12th hole.

he chance to vote for your favorite public courses in Washington is here again, and we’re as eager as ever to discover which course in our fair state has the most admirers. One thing this time that has us excited is the addition of Scarecrow to the list of candidates. We last previewed our contest for top Washington honors in spring 2024, when we wondered aloud how the new course at the Gamble Sands Resort in Brewster might affect the voting in future contests. We won’t predict the outcome, but we’re confident Scarecrow will not only place somewhere in the top 10, perhaps in the top five, too. But that’s up to you to determine. And who’s to say it won’t challenge Chambers Bay, which has won five of the six times we’ve run this reader’s poll. And don’t count out the OG course at Gamble Sands, runner up four of the last five rankings, and the last course to dethrone Chambers Bay, back in 2017. What might work against Scarecrow, of course, is how new it is. As of this writing, David McLay Kidd and Nick Schaan’s sequel to their epic original at Gamble Sands hasn’t even been open a year, which means only a limited number of readers are likely to have seen it. In fact, with its winter closure, the new course has only been playable for five months. Those who haven’t played it yet might have tee times for later this summer by which time all the votes will have been cast and counted, and the winner announced. We think a remote (but not too remote) and entirely natural site with views of the Cascade Mountains and Columbia River, wide fairways that make it relatively difficult to lose a ball, contoured greens that are as fascinating and charismatic as they are intriguingly-positioned and beautifully-maintained, and holes that trigger every golfing emotion from fear to ecstasy, is a pretty potent combination. But, of course, even with such a long list of assets, can Scarecrow beat Jones, Carlton, and Blasi’s wonder-course on the coast at University Place? Chambers Bay is nearly 20 years old now, has hosted a major championship, and is getting better all the time. Changing the turf on the greens from Fescue to Poa Annua seven years ago was a smart move, resulting in considerably better putting surfaces. A links-like course establishes itself very differently from a parkland course, for instance, as the soils and vegetation are so dissimilar. But it’s plain to see how well Chambers Bay has become part of its landscape. In human terms, it clearly feels very comfortable in its own skin now, as it was still coming of age in its formative years. The bare patches on the greens and faux dunes are long gone, and it’s beginning to look and feel much older than it is, thanks largely to Director of Agronomy Eric Johnson and his maintenance team. Regulars at Chambers Bay might have been saying something similar for a while now. Or the differences between one visit and the next might have been so small

those frequent visitors weren’t able to discern them. Perhaps fewer visits allow you to see the progress more clearly, like when you see a friend’s kids for the first time in a year or two. Whatever it is, we’re just saying Chambers Bay is special and we suspect (without forecasting, of course) it will remain one to watch. It’s hard to know how else the top 10 will shake out, but we’re sure the usual suspects will be in there somewhere. The beloved Olympic Course at Gold Mountain was third last time out and always has a strong showing when the tally is totaled. We’re certainly not making any bets on what may come about — there’s so many amazing top 10 candidates. In 2024, we were pleasantly surprised to see The Home Course rise into fourth spot — it had come in eighth two years previously. Where had The Home Course suddenly found such favor? Were people finally becoming familiar with its architectural merits, or were they ready to celebrate it as “Washington’s own course?” Whatever it was, we’re very interested to see where it finishes this year. Will White Horse return to the top 10? For some reason, it dropped from 7th to 13th between 2022 and 2024. Had something like that happened 10 years ago, it might have been a lack of votes that accounted for it. But with thousands of votes now being cast, we think the rankings should be taken at face value, so White Horse’s ranking reflected the reader’s 2024 viewpoint. And how will Trophy Lake’s new bunkers affect its position — will it climb back into the top 10 where many people think it belongs? The Home Course, Trophy Lake, and White Horse aside, we do expect Desert Canyon, Palouse Ridge, Wine Valley, Salish Cliffs, Prospector, Washington National, Apple Tree and Port Ludlow to all contend for top spots, too. How can they not — each shine in their own way. Might there be a spot in the top 20 for North Shore, or rather Cedar Irons, which has dramatically improved thanks to Dan Hixson’s $7.5 million rebuild? Or might the work still need a year or two to settle? And could Spokane’s city-owned courses that have benefited from a bunker rebuild (Indian Canyon) or improved irrigation (Downriver and The Creek at Qualchan) have shot up in people’s estimation? Might Meadow Park’s major investment see it make a significant rise in the rankings? Is it too early in the renovation of Gold Mountain’s Cascade Course for its position to have changed much? And how long before we’re having to rethink everything again because of River Ranch along the Snake River? It’s reported to open in late 2027. So, as the only independent ranking system we are aware of in the state, now is the time to be counted and cast your votes. See the QR code at the right and share your views — we can’t wait for the August issue to show you the results.

e find it settling, heartening, and encouraging that there’s relatively little movement in our reader-driven Cascade Golfer Top 10 Best Public Courses in Washington every two years. Why? We think it demonstrates two very important aspects of the list. First, we believe it’s an endorsement of the voting system and shows that the number of readers who vote makes this a worthwhile and credible ranking. If the order or identity of the courses were completely different from one ranking to the next, it might suggest that some biased voters colluded or a major change at one of the courses may have altered the outcome. We got the impression that might have happened once or twice in the rankings’ early years when a couple of courses we hadn’t expected to appear showed up in the top 20 or so. But it hasn’t happened for several years, and the courses that appear regularly in the top 10 are clearly there because of an objective and genuine belief among a significant number of people that this is where they belong. Second, it’s obviously confirmation of how good these courses are. You have chosen Chambers Bay as the top public course in the state in six of the seven contests to date. How fortunate we are that then-Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg had the vision to use the former sand/gravel quarry in University Place for a public golf course. And that Robert Trent Jones Jr., Bruce Charlton and Jay Blasi had the skill to turn it into a beautiful and invigorating links course. It fits most people’s definition of a links by playing over firm, sand-based ground and fast-running fescue fairways next to a major body of water with no trees (well, one) and being good enough to host the U.S. Open. It is Golf Digest’s highest-ranked course in Washington and No. 19 in its current list of America’s top 100 public cours-
cascadegolfer.com
es. Golfweek likewise ranks it as the best public course in Washington, and the 17th best in the USA. Those are some heady numbers in a country with roughly 12,000 public golf courses. Of the major publications, Golf Magazine is alone in not rating it the best in Washington. For its No. 1 in the state, it opts for the No. 2 course in our rankings — Gamble Sands, which did overtake Chambers Bay for the top spot in Cascade Golfer in 2017 but has settled into the No. 2 slot since. Golf Magazine rates Gamble Sands No. 18 in the U.S. (public) and Chambers Bay No. 31. These are deservedly the best two public courses in Washington, and both are highly rated in the nation. The gap between them and national publications’ thirdranked course in Washington is significantly larger than the gap between the two of them. Plus, it’s not always the same course in third. Sometimes the Olympic Course at Gold Mountain gets the nod, sometimes it’s Wine Valley. But the point stands — the gap between Chambers Bay/ Gamble Sands and Gold Mountain/Wine Valley is wide compared to that between Chambers and Gamble. Gold Mountain gets your vote as No. 3, as it has done for the last three contests. But then something a little odd happens. At fourth in our (your) rankings is The Home Course, Mike Asmundson’s parkland beauty in DuPont with amazing views of the Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound. But it doesn’t get a mention in Golf Digest’s list of the best 15 courses in Washington (including private courses). It’s similarly shut out in Golf Magazine’s list of best Washington public courses and, to introduce another respected ranking entirely, comes in 14th among public courses in the Evergreen State on top100golfcourses.com. We were a pleasantly surprised the PNGA/WSGA-owned facility came in at No. 4 in our rankings two years ago, but it obviously wasn’t
a blip because it’s back at No. 4 this time. So, who’s right? We trust our readers implicitly. They know local golf better than anyone and the fact The Home Course has finished fourth two contests running says a lot. So, what are the national publications missing? Do they just not play it enough — one-and-doners who obviously miss its finer points during their one visit? We’re inclined to think so. Mind you, we will be watching with great interest again in 2028. Something else we’ll be keeping an eye on is Scarecrow’s expected rise in the rankings. It appeared on only 31 percent of ballots this time and yet still came in 14th, meaning those who have been lucky enough to play Gamble Sands’s younger sibling already obviously thought very highly of it. Frequent visitors to Brewster, Wash., love both and, together, they make for a multi-course resort that only golfers in a handful of places could possibly look down on — Pinehurst in North Carolina, Bandon in Oregon, Monterey in California, Kiawah Island in South Carolina, Sand Valley or Kohler in Wisconsin, Streamsong in Florida, and maybe a couple of others. Lastly, we’re glad to see Washington National continuing its rise (17th, 10th and 7th the last three contests) up the ladder. It’s now over 600 votes clear of Desert Canyon in 8th which shows just how good John Fought’s 2000 design must be. As we say, we think Evergreen State golfers know what they’re talking about and putting Washington National in the mid-table mix alongside Salish Cliffs is absolutely how it should be. It’s only 76 votes shy of Salish, in fact, so that’s another interesting contest to watch out for next time. Enjoy the results and share your input with us — we’d love to hear your thoughts.
