the dam of Sea The Stars). Galileo is responsible for more English Derby winners than any other sire in history. His five English Derby winners being New Approach (2008), Ruler Of The World (2013), Australia (2014), Anthony Van Dyck (2019) and Serpentine (2020). He has sired 385 stakes winners including 103 G1 winners, and has an impressive 68% winners to runners.

He is also responsible for three 2000 Guineas winners, four 1000 Guineas winners, four English Oaks winners, and three St Leger winners.

Galileo’s record in the Breeders’ Cup makes for impressive reading, with Galileo responsible for four winners, while his tally of Irish Derby winners currently stands at six.

Galileo also pulled off a truly remarkable feat when his offspring Found, Highland Reel and Order Of St George ran 1-2-3 in the 2016 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, while sons Sixties Icon, Galileo (IRE)

The Last Drop and Red Rock pulled off a similar feat in the 2006 St Leger.

The Champion Sire is also responsible for unbeaten superstar Frankel (dam by Danehill), the highest rated horse in recent Timeform history (TFR 143). His sire’s greatest son on the racecourse, Frankel has also established himself as the heir to Galileo’s Champion Sire throne. Galileo has been Champion Sire of GB/Ireland 12 times, and was also Champion Sire in France in 2016 and 2019.

Galileo’s leading sire sons at stud include Frankel, Teofilo, Nathaniel, New Approach, Australia, Churchill and Gleneagles. His dual G1 winning son Nathaniel is the sire of 11 time G1 winner Enable.

Inevitably, given his own greatness as a stallion and the quality of mares he covered, Galileo has become a Champion Broodmare Sire.

His daughters are responsible for boom sire, and 2000 Guineas/Lockinge Stakes winner Night Of Thunder and fellow 2000 Guineas winners Saxon Warrior, Galileo Gold, and Magna Grecia. Galileo is also broodmare sire of classic winners City Of Troy, Auguste Rodin, Snowfall and St Mark’s Basilica (World Champion 3yo, European Champion 2yo & Cartier Horse Of The Year).

Galileo mares have produced 360 stakes winners (60 G1 winners and 14 Champions) including Arc winner Sottsass (like St Mark’s Basilica - a son of Siyouni), Oaks winner Qualify, five time G1 winner

The Autumn Sun, Henry Longfellow, Angel Bleu, US Navy Flag, Shaquille, Ghaiyyath, etc.

GALILEO IN SOUTH AFRICA

Galileo has made his mark in a big way in South Africa. From just a handful of runners, the Epsom/Irish Derby winner left behind the

Galileo (IRE)

likes of Horse Of The Year IGUGU, Champion MAHBOOBA and graded stakes winners ALVAO, IL SAGGIATORE, RAIN GAL and SIDERA, as well as the likes of Guineas runner-up GALILEO’S GALAXY and SA Derby second GALILEO’S DESTINY.

Galileo’s daughters have produced the following stakes performers in South Africa: ARCETRI PINK, GREEN WITH ENVY, DYCE, MON PETIT CHERIE, LEGEND OF ARTHUR, WILLIAM IRON ARM, THUNEE PLAYA, KING PELLES, PONTE PIETRA, MRS BROWNING, ANFIELDS ROCKET, ARAGOSTA, SHAH AKBAR, NARTJIE, FIREALLEY, FOLLOW THE STAR, CAPTAIN CHORUS, CAPITANA, SEVILLE ORANGE, RAILTRIP, LIKE A PANTHER, JAMRA, HERO’S HONOUR, INTERGALACTIC, COUNTS ROCKET, etc.

A number of Galileo’s sire sons have also made their presence felt in South Africa. His dual graded stakes winning son GLOBAL VIEW (sire of DAVE THE KING) was the country’s Leading First Season Sire of 2020, while his short-lived

G1 Racing Post Trophy winning son KINGSBARNS came up with the G1 winning Champion GABOR and G2 Concorde Cup winner KING OF GEMS in a short stud career.

Galileo’s G1 winning son THE UNITED STATESan own brother to the G1 winning fillies Hermosa and Hydrangea - made an immediate impression with his very first runner being G2 SA Nursery winner, SHEELA. Other notable progeny include BILLY BOWLEGS, EAST COAST, KHAYA’S HOPE, TEXAS RED, WITHOUT QUESTION, NAVAJO NATION, etc.

Galileo’s sire descendants at stud in South Africa include NEW PREDATOR (by Galileo’s Champion son New Approach) - now deceased - sire of PURE PREDATOR, PURPLE PITCHER, FATAL FLAW, STARS AND BRA’S, CHARMING CHEETAH, etc.

GALILEO - STUD CAREER

CHAMPION Sire GB/Ire 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019,

TDN’s Andrew Caulfield stated: “One of the best-looking and best-bred sires at stud, Galileo is the centre of the universe as far as today’s European breeding industry is concerned”.

Aiden O’Brien spoke of his pride at having

trained Galileo, as well as so many of his progeny - “He was an unbelievable horse for everybody involved with him. What he did was exceptional.

“John did an incredible job managing him and recognised the mares that were going to suit him. He recognised how good he was very young, and he was always so highly thought of before he even came to Ballydoyle.

“He was our first Derby winner from Ballydoyle, and we were so fortunate to have him. It’s an incredible story, and obviously we’ll probably never see it ever again. What made him very special was the attitude that he put into his stock. We have never seen anything like that.

“He was a massive horse physically. But the tremendous determination and genuineness he put into all his stock was unique really.”

Looking back on his racing career, O’Brien said: “It was unreal - he won his maiden, the two

Galileo’s son Frankel (dam by Danehill) TFR 143

trials and then the Derby, Irish Derby and King George.

“He looked different as well going through his races - he didn’t look like any other thoroughbred. He had loads of genuine power.

“His stock had that as well and the determination to put their heads out the same way he galloped.

“He’ll be sorely missed by us all.”

CHAMPION 3YO - GREEN WITH ENVY

Green With Envy is a beautiful individual, standing 16,2 hands with a grand head, deep girth, and covering good ground with a strong quarter and very good gaskin. He will let down into a truly magnificent specimen.

Besides his physical attributes, he has a very impressive pedigree, harnessing leading bloodlines through Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready x Canny Lad x Marauding), Galileo (Sadler’s Wells x Urban Sea), Shirley Heights (Mill Reef) and Dancing Brave (Lyphard).

We have always promoted the

Gimmethegreenlight x Sadler’s Wells combination, and it is now apparent that the Gimmethegreenlight x Roberto x Lassie Dear combination is also doing well, resulting in two Equus Champion 2yo Colts. The Lassie Dear (dam of Al Mufti) element is also present in Equus Champion 3yo Filly Gimme A Nother’s pedigree.

Both G1 winners She’s A Keeper and Gimme A Prince are out of mares carrying the Trippi x Fort Wood (Sadler’s Wells) combination.

G1 winner Surcharge/Yulong Prince is out of Congestion Charge (GB) by Diktat, a product of Warning x Sadler’s Wells. Congestion Charge’s 2nd dam is by Shirley Heights, who won The Derby and Irish Derby in 1978. He had previously won the Royal Lodge and Dante Stakes, and went on to become a highly successful sire. Notably, Shirley Heights is also the sire of Green With Envy’s 2nd dam, Mohican Princess.

G1 winner VJ’s Angel is out of an Oratorio (Danehill) mare. More Than Ready became the perfect outcross for Danehill line mares in Australasia, producing More Joyous, Sebring,

Dancing Brave (USA) TFR 140 - sire of Green With Envy’s 3rd dam

Perfectly Ready, More Than Sacred, Benicio etc. The Galileo x Danehill cross also produced superstar Frankel. Gimmethegreenlight has produced Champion Got The Greenlight from a Danehill line mare through Commands.

Green With Envy’s 3rd dam is by Dancing Brave (Lyphard) - whose Arc success in 1986 has been voted the greatest ever horserace in a Racing Post poll. With a Timeform Rating of 140lb, Dancing Brave, retired to stud at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. In 1987, he was found to be suffering from Marie’s disease and had fertility problems. His early success led to his being exported to Japan.

Dancing Brave sired numerous winners, having a particularly good crop of three-year-olds in 1993, foaled in the year before his export, including Commander In Chief (dam by Roberto), who won the English and Irish Derbys, and White Muzzle (Ela-Mana-Mou), second in both the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Dancing Brave also sired King Halo (Halo), TM Ocean (Rivlia), Wemyss Bight (Mill Reef), Cherokee Rose (Secretariat), Mohican Girl (Above Suspicion), etc. He died of a heart attack in 1999.
