he roots are going back to summer 2009, when my good friend and now co-founder of the Journal City24 came to Armenia from Europe for a holiday. A wealthy woman with 2 children wanted to spend her time and money to her heart's content and found a problem when looking for information about entertainment and leisure. For her family big posters by Opera House, which were in Armenian, was the only information source. Unfortunately, lady could not read and understand Armenian language. Sometimes even local people were unaware of many things happening around the city of Yerevan. So, got the problem – seek for solution. The prototype lies in the basis of a European journal called “Laisvalaikis” – which means free time. We modified the concept in accordance with the Armenian market trying to cover all the scopes of activities. City24 Journal was designed in Europe, so it totally differs from other magazines and newspapers in Yerevan. Even the name City24 is not just a name; it has its meaning and states our mission. Our purpose is to provide information about leisure and free time at the City of Yerevan for 24 hours. We decided to publish it biweekly - on the 1st and 15th days of each month, because there are many events happening in Yerevan. We decided to make it bilingual in Armenian and English, so locals and incomers will have updated information about Yerevan. Interesting short stories about parties, concerts, cuisines, restaurants and bars, cars, traveling destinations, health and beauty, fashion, shopping and of course events timetable will be published in Journal editions. We also want you – our reader to become the face of our journal’s headline - life@city, if you have an interesting story of your life, send us an e-mail at city24@city24.am and we will publish your story in the upcoming edition. Become famous with City24, share your adventures with everyone. The Journal is free of charge and it is distributed to places of recreation, so people can plan their free time effectively. City24 is not just a journal, now it’s the spirit of Yerevan with its shiny and well designed pages. It will save your time and money, and will be helpful guide through the city. We are also very keen about environmental problems and we do not publish it in large quantity, so we encourage you to read the journal and just leave it for others. This way we all together can make a great impact on saving the environment. If we print less and share the Journal, we can save 1000 trees and energy for about 20GJ per year. Let’s take care of the nature together!

NEWLY OPENED PLACES IN YEREVAN – HURRY UP TO VISIT!!!
SPONTANEOUS EXCITEMENT IN THE MIDDLE OF HYUSISAIN AVENUE
n Thursday, July 22, it was a usual summer evening. Many young people, families and couples were enjoying walking along Northern Avenue. There was no sign of anything out of the ordinary, when suddenly about 150 people gathered together in front of the restaurant “KAYL” and started to applaud. Passersby were confused. What’s going on? Opening of a new restaurant? – No, as the participants applauded about a minute and then just disappeared in the crowd. Many questions arouse. Who were those people? Why were they applauding? For whom were these applauses? City24 decided to find it out and answer all these questions. We found out that for the last 4 months this was already the 4th time such kind of action is organized in Yerevan. These extraordinary meetings and short duration massive actions are called FLASHMOB.
O
Flash means – lightening, fast, and mob means crowd or gathering together (mobilizing). Brief facts about FLASHMOB: Flashmob – is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time, then disperse, First Flashmob took place in Manhattan in May 2003, and was organized by Bill Wasik., senior editor of Harper's Magazine, The most notable Flashmob, “Pillow Fight Flash Mob”, was organized first on March 22, 2008, in 25 cities around the world. It was called “First International Flash mob”.
According to Hayk Melkonyan, cofounder of the Armenian FlashMob Division, the information about Flashmob is spread through the social networks
( p r o m e n a d e @ c i t y )
Facebook and Odnoklassniki. The first meeting took place in front of Moscow Cinema on April 22 and was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of Genocide. The second Flashmob on June 11 in Cascade Park, which was committed to reading books, had deep resonance. The organizers managed to attract the attention of more than 300 people. Mr. Hayk Melkonyan noticed that more and more participants are getting interested in these actions. Hayk mentioned also that Armenian Flashmobs usually have certain purpose, because, according to him, Armenians do not like meaningless things. Even if it is so and Armenian Flashmobs differ from original ones, it for sure favors the creation of a new generation society which accepts democratic lifestyle and wants to get rid of old stereotypes and complexes. Follow Armenian FlashMob Division on social networks and participate in funny gatherings. Let’s wait for a new Flashmob action in the nearest future and hope that more and more people will be involved. Let’s have fun!!!

Pechakucha Night at the Club
Business and social media
echakucha Night arrived in Yerevan. On the 30th of July and 20th of August the Club is organizing a Pechakucha night. Pecha kucha means conversation and the presentation format was devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Klein Dytham architecture. The first PechaKucha Night was held in Tokyo in their gallery, lounge, bar, club, creative kitchen SuperDeluxe in February 2003 Klein Dytham architecture still organize and support the global PechaKucha Night network and organise PechaKucha Night Tokyo. Pecha Kucha Night events consist of around a dozen presentations, each presenter having 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds. Each presenter has just 6 minutes 40 seconds to explain their ideas before the next presenter takes the stage. Conceived as a venue through which young designers could meet, show their work, exchange ideas, and network, the format keeps presentations concise, fast-paced and entertaining. In 2004 PKN began running in a few cities in Europe, and has since become a worldwide phenomenon, now running in more than 300 cities in almost every corner of the globe and now in Armenia, too. The power of Pecha Kucha is that the success of each presentation relies purely on the presenter’s personality and the strength of their ideas; the format places young designers and students on the same footing as the global stars. Now a few Pecha Kucha tips for the newbie by one of the participants of the European Pechakucha Night: • Relax - the style is coffee-shopopen-mike-ish. The audience knows it’s hard, and will cut you slack. • Simplify your presentation. Maximum of three points made… probably better to keep it 1-2. Hmmmm. Make that one! • Choose something you’re passionate about. If it’s work, great. If not, fine. The audience will feel this and it will make things go much more smoothly. • Don’t build too many dependencies on the visual transitions – this will reduce the stress. But the visual elements can do a lot of communicating for you, so think of it more like a liquid slide that morphs slowly as you’re speaking. • If you need notes, you’re not ready. • Go to a Pecha Kucha event (or three) before you present or watch on-line presentations in internet. You can also pick up tips from presenters that will surely help.
owadays we cannot imagine our life without technologies. The technology is developing so fast, that even kindergarten children know how to use computer. But there is a power, without which computer just turns into a modern typing machine, or just a solitaire game source. It is the internet. Think for a moment, how will you feel yourself if you do not have internet connection and cannot brows internet for at least one day? Here comes the feeling of loneliness and helplessness, doesn’t it? People’s addiction to social networking is growing day by day. Recently, the number of Facebook users turned 500 million. And not only ordinary people are in dependence of social sites. Social sites have recently become one of the main tools for promoting a busi-

ness not only in Europe and the USA, but in Armenia, too. In 2008 the Company “X-TECH” was the first taking up the initiative of business promotion through social sites. The first experience was the promotion
of an exclusive handmade bag selling website www.marli.am on www.facebook.com. The very first day of the promotion, the exclusive handmade bag was sold. Arman Atoyan the founder of the X–TECH Company says that social promotion as a separate service became popular in 2009. According to him, it is a very effective way to penetrate a product or service into the market; it has many advantages, one of which is the direct communication with potential consumers and quick way to get feedback and act
• Float a simple theme throughout the presentation. The traditional persuasive presentation can be like laying out puzzle pieces on the floor, describing them to the audience, and tying the whole theme together at the end in a single a-ha moment.. There’s no time for this in Pecha Kucha. You don’t get enough time to describe the pieces, and by the end (when you want to tie it together) you’re a tad frazzled. • Breathe - I think this is underrated. And even after reading it on another post before I presented, I didn’t take it seriously. During rehearsal breathing is not an issue, but on stage, it is. • Participate in Pecha Kucha Nights and have fun!

accordingly. Another advantage is its cost effectiveness. The social promotion of the Areximbank is one of the most successful projects coordinated by X-TECH. They managed to get 1000 followers in less than 3 weeks. X-tech is the author also of the www.artworld.am and www.projectmasis.com sites. Current rojects are HDM.am and BuyBook.am Promotion via social networks. X-TECH is also the co-organizer of the FacebookYan parties in Yerevan. This event is promoted only through social sites but they manage to gather up to 10 000 facebook users to the event page. According to Arman Atoyan, these are good achievements, because emarketing and internet penetration is still developing in Armenia. Short Facts: Starbucks Coffee has more than 7 million followers on Facebook, Twitter and Youtube fan pages. Correct strategy of the internet marketing can lead to great results. Arman stated also that before choosing a promoter, one need to study its previous projects carefully and ask for detailed strategy plan, because there have been some cases when businessmen were charged huge amount of money for “social promotion”, but in fact only fan pages or groups were created on the networks. The quick development of the internet and social promotion in Armenia gives a great opportunity to use fast and effective promotion of a product or service not only within local but also international market.

ll five agree that biking is a wonderful way to discover Armenia. They smile as they recall the respect and the admiration shown by the locals for our five foreigners while they biked up steep hills and struggled to get through muddy cart ways. They also agree that having a minibus with a trailer made biking much easier. The mini bus with a trailer was provided by SET for those who found the road too steep and wished to load their bike into the trailer and travel conveniently by car. In addition, the minibus allowed them to safely store their entire luggage. With only a light daypack, they found biking enjoyable even when it came to difficult and mountainous roads. Katrin enthuses about the spectacular tranquilly of the landscapes and states that after spending two weeks close to nature being back in the city has been a culture shock. Udo and his wife Angela emphasize that from the very first night they spent in the house of the local Ushi villagers, they felt relaxed and welcomed. They say that their memoirs of living in the houses of the locals have become an inseparable part of their “Armenian experiences”. Unlike most other tours, SET guests do not stay in hotels but instead have the unique opportunity of spending their nights in locals’ homes. There, they gain an insight into the lives of local people and the local culture. Of course staying in a private house in an Armenian village does not offer the luxury and comfort of a 3 star hotel but the overwhelming cordiality and hospitality of their hosts has left an unforgettable impression on the five guests. They all also agree that one of the most memorable highlight of the trip was the biking tour in Karabagh. Peter was highly impressed by the beauty and loneliness of the landscapes in Karabagh. He also emphasized that biking there was a real pleasure as the roads were in a very good condition and traffic was much less in comparison to Armenia. Interestingly, this side trip was not even part of the initial plan. But, SET follows the philosophy that a tour should not be a tight dogma but an open framework that accommodates the guests’ wishes. Thus, as all bikers expressed a strong wish to use one of the planned resting days to go to Karabagh, the SET staff quickly organized a trip to Karabagh.

SET BIKING TOUR
IN ARMENIA
The journey is over! Peter, Tanya, Katrin, Udo and Angela are back in Yerevan after two adventurous weeks full of new impressions and encounters. Specifically, during the past two weeks (May 22 – June 5), the five guests from Germany and the Netherlands visited Armenia’s most famous cultural sites and breathtaking landscapes by bike with SunChild Eco Tours (SET). Led by Hovhannes, an experienced biker, and Lusine, an excellent German speaker, the five visited various monasteries (e.g. Saghmosavank, Haghpat and Tatev), The Armenian Stonehenge, Zorats Karer and the mysterious dwelling caves of Khondzoresk. As the group sits together for the final time, they reminisce on the highlights of their trip.

NO, THIS IS NOTA GOODBYE BUT A “SEE YOU AGAIN”
( e s c a p e t h e c i t y )
However, SET is not just a travel agency but a part of the larger “Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets” (FPWC) which is an environmental organization working in the field of nature protection and environmental education for children and youth. FPWC maintains SunChild Eco-clubs throughout Armenia where young environmentalists learn how to solve environmental problems and raise awareness for nature protection in their local communities. Guests who are traveling with SET also enjoy the opportunity to meet the young members of local SunChild Ecoclubs and learn about Armenia’s natural treasures as well as the endangerment of the country’s unique biodiversity. Finally, the bike tour ends as the bikers say farewell at a typical Armenian restaurant in Yerevan accompanied with homemade dolmas and wine from Ijevan. “Auf Wiedersehen!” They say as they leave. No, this is not a goodbye but a “See you again”. I’m quite certain that the five will come back soon and SET will be more than happy to help them discover more of Armenia’s cultural sites and breathtaking landscapes.

NEW BLACK CAR COLOR...
assing by the parking of prestigious supermarket in the center of Yerevan, you definitely, have noticed strange black color new branded car. The car doesn’t look shiny, the surface is matte. This is a new black car color trend - a season vogue this summer in Armenian. As we have been following for several months now, matte colored cars have been popping up just about everywhere in Yerevan. City24 decided to investigate the new trend winds, where are they blowing from. There are two ways to turn you car into matte color (it might be not black, but any other color) to paint your car or to wrap your car into vinyl. Matte paintjobs used to be the choice of weekend racers who’d touch up their cars after a bangle with anything they could get their hands on to protect it from rust, but lately the shine-free surface has been making its way onto more tuner cars and now production models as well. Recently though, it appears that several manufacturers have begun producing matte paint jobs for their vehicles. Mercedes-Benz was the first to produce a fully matte painted vehicle with the E63 AMG wagon in 2008, they have the 2011 SL Night Edition now available for order. BMW has been making a Frozen Gray M5 and some exotic companies will do it as well. With that said, it appears that this paint has reached its peak in mid 2009. Carmakers like it because it shows off the pure design of a vehicle while also accentuating most of its lines but it can prove troublesome when it comes to repairs and maintenance. "Every time you take it through the car wash, the buffers are starting to buff it back up and it starts to get shiny there. It's easy to paint, but it's not easy to keep it matte," The price for paint and for vinyl wrap is mostly the same., but there are some pros and cons you should consider before deciding to turn you car in extraordinary vehicle.
P
ITS WORTH THINKING ABOUT VINYL WRAP BECAUSE: 1) IT’S A BIT CHEAPER THAN PAINTING YOUR WHOLE CAR 2) IT PROTECTS YOUR PAINT SO IF YOU PLAN TO SELL YOUR CAR YOU CAN PEEL IT OFF AND YOUR PAINT WILL NOT HAVE FADED AS MUCH FROM UV RAYS 3) ITS UNIQUE 4) IT CAN LOOK REALLY GOOD, IF YOU DO IT THE RIGHT WAY

THE MOST EXPENSIVE CARWASH
IN THE WORLD Those who have their own cars are certainly familiar with no contact carwash service which nowadays is very popular in Yerevan. The method of such a carwash is to clean without touching the car with brushes, sponges or other scratchy stuff, but to perform foam cleaning of high pressure. This service is more expensive than the usual carwash, but it is affordable for most of the car owners, especially those of brand new models. How much do you usually pay for a car wash? A few thousand Drams? Well, what about paying 8200 euro (about 4 mln. AMD) to get your ride squeaky clean? If you are from the UK and drive a luxury sports car, then you will have the chance to enjoy the services of this overly priced carwash. And you will have to wait 250 hours for the job to be done. You don’t have to worry as the company will treat your car with all of the re-
spect it deserves! As part of the cleaning job a computerized microscope – normally used by forensic scientists – is used to examine the body work for the most inconspicuous scratch not even visible to the naked eye. The car wash has 50+ phases, takes about 2 weeks and in-
cludes a waxing from car wax made from rare materials only found in northern Brazil costing more than $11,000 a tub. The guy behind this company has already cleaned cars like the Lamborghini Gallardo, Bugatti Veyron, and an orange McLaren F1 GTR worth $7.5 million. We N2(2)
guess having a pricey carwash really pays! However, unless Bugattis or McLarens are driven august’1
in Yerevan streets, such expensive carwash service is not on demand here.

our countries to be together, felt happy with the birth of our children. So after some thoughts the celebration plan was ready. Preparation took 10 days, and when my husband arrived in Yerevan, everything was ready.
BACK TO THE PAST memories of our youth. The limo was driving slowly, the music was loud and we were happy. All of a sudden the car stopped at the Cascade Park and the door opened. This was another part of the celebration. I took all the balloons and invited my husband to follow me. We ran up the stair as high as we could and sent all the balloons to the night sky of Yerevan and we made a wish with each balloon. That was another portion of excitement. We got back to limo and continued the journey with loud music, good drink and our memories. We really felt at that moment as if we

I decided to prepare a surprise for my lovely husband for the 10th anniversary of happy family life. We were in Kazakhstan then, but we decided to celebrate that special day in Yerevan. I came 2 weeks earlier to prepare everything for the celebration. What to prepare? Dinner at the restaurant? A night at the presidential suite at a hotel? No, it is too banal. I decided to skip this old time stories and thought of something interesting which will help us recall all the best moments of our family life. We met each other in a very romantic place – cruise ship in the Caribbean sea. We traveled together a lot; we closed the distance between
Fortunately my excitement did not betray me and my husband did not suspect that something should happen. So the long-awaited day came. I escaped from home early in the morning when my husband was still sleeping. I went to the post office and sent a post card to the address we lived, and wrote the recipient’s – my husband’s name.

The last task was а kind of а test - how well my husband knows me. As he stated he was really surprised and curious about what was going to happen. So he got 7 hours to buy new white clothes, get my favorite things and find the place of the meeting. As he recalls, the hardest thing was to remember what kind of white flowers I love. At 9 pm, in the middle of roundabout, a man all in white, with a bunch of white flowers was standing, I believe, passersby were curious
expect this kind of surprise. But this was just the beginning. The door of Limousine opened and I stepped out all in white. We both were so exited, because all this was happening in front of tens of witnesses. Everybody just stopped to see what would happen next. I approached my husband and nominated him with the ribbon of “The best husband” and I was wearing the ribbon of “The best wife. Then in front of astonished people I invited him to take a ride to the past 10 years. We got into the limo, which was fully packed with heart shape balloons. Before the car would start the journey, some people had a chance to take a photo by their mobile phones. I switched on the m u s i c ,

Lewis Carroll The Complete Stories & Poems of Lewis Carroll Geddes & Grosset Paperback, 384 pages 4000 AMD
N2(2)
This commemorative oversized volume of the complete collection of stories and poems of Lewis Carol showcases his ingenious use of word play, inverted logic and satire. Lewis Carroll was the pen name and, it could be claimed, the alter ego of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematician, writer and photographer. His creations, especially Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, have been translated into countless languages and are as loved now as they have ever been. His neologisms ("curiouser and curiouser") and turns of phrase have forever infiltrated and enriched our language and culture.
