Hello all, I trust this message finds you in good health and high spirits. As we continue our commitment to providing you with informative and insightful content, I felt compelled to address an issue of great significance that is impacting our industry. With ongoing discourse surrounding the regulation of vaping products all over the world, with the most recent being the possible bans on certain flavoured e-liquids in France. The flavour bans aim to address the appeal of such products, especially among the younger population, but yet again fails to highlight the countless numbers of adults who rely on vaping to stay of smoking. Luckily, a French consumer group has now rallied together to showcase the importance of vaping for individuals in the country.

POWER-

Hungary

The Hungarian Government has received backlash from the vaping community, after issuing a statement on the dismissal of vaping as an effective harm reduction tool. This stance not only denies globally accepted scientific consensus but also appears to deliberately undermine the success of countries like Sweden in their harm reduction initiatives, according to the World Vapers’ Alliance. Michael Landl, Director of The World Vapers’ Alliance, said: “We can’t afford to let politics overshadow science, especially in matters of public health.” The WVA has called on the Hungarian Government to recalibrate its stance based on evidence…to prioritise genuine harm reduction.

CAUGHT

Red -Handed A rather random occurrence has stirred the sports world as an Australian cricketer has been caught vaping in the dressing rooms at Ekana Stadium, Australia. The moment in question happened during Australia’s record defeat against South Africa at the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 as Glenn Maxwell was caught on camera clutching an e-cigarette. This incident has led to discussions about regulations and guidelines concerns such devices in cricketing events and has opened the flood gates on the potential implications to the sport’s image. Neither Maxwell nor his team management has issues an official statement addressing the matter.

THE

Blame Game

Dr Mike McKean – Vice President for Policy at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health – blamed the message ‘95 percent safer than cigarettes’ for youth vaping. Saying that by marketing vapes as a less harmful alternative to smoking, it had ‘opened the door to significant chaos’ and was an ‘unwise thing to have done’. In response, a recently released statement by the deputy chief executive of the charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), Hazel Cheeseman, said: “It’s not because they think it’s safe that teenagers are experimenting with vaping…further regulation will be more effective than scare mongering.”

BLIND TO THE Truth Dr Brian Boxer Wachler, an eye surgeon in Beverly Hills, California, took to the highly influential TikTok app to grossly misinform users that vaping is more dangerous than smoking cigarettes. In the video, he says: “vape temperatures can be significantly hotter than cigarette smoke, so vape literally could be barbequing your lungs… “[This could] explain why more

younger people who vape need lung transplants versus younger people who smoke cigarettes.” Claims such as these are undeniably damaging, and with the video having already reached more than 6.3 million users, Wachler’s ludicrous preaching’s are only achieving more harm than good.

BAT-TING FOR Both Sides

Tobacco giant British American Tobacco has once again self-invited themselves into the current underage vaping issue the industry is currently facing. The company has come forward with five possible ways to tackle the potholes surrounding the accessibility and marketing of vapes to children. BAT’s Chief Strategy and Growth Officer, Kingsley Wheaton suggested ‘smarter regulation and greater collaboration in order for countries to achieve their smoke-free ambitions’. The strategies suggested include on-device technology and functionality, flavour options, manufacturing and import level, retail restrictions, and enforcement and penalties.

THE WOLF OF Downing Street The UK’s biggest tobacco firms have seen almost £1 billion GBP wiped from their shares as the Government announced new plans to raise the legal age for buying tobacco. In a much-welcomed speech in Manchester, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said: “A 14-year-old today will never legally be sold a cigarette. “I propose that in future we raise the smoking age by one year every year.” Immediately following the news, British American Tobacco saw its shares diminish by one percent (£600 million) off its market value. Meanwhile, fellow tobacco giant Imperial Brands witnessed a drop of 2.4 percent (£340 million).

“PLEASE Don’t DO THAT” YouTubers Kai Cenat and IShowSpeed have gone viral following a video of the pair approaching a man with the goal of breaking his vaping device to ‘save’ his life. After the initial introduction, the man repeatedly says ‘please don’t do that’ whilst the YouTubers grab his expensive e-cigarette. One of the men can be heard saying: “God sent me to make sure you don’t vape anymore” before throwing the device onto the floor, breaking it in front of the visibly devastated stranger. The video has sparked rage amongst vapers as users question the need for such dramatic and invasive actions.

Quit For Good, a non-profit promoting harm reduction in the Philippines, has set its sights on the FDA and WHO, in a request to focus their efforts on helping adult smokers access better alternatives to cigarettes. At the GTNF 2023 in Seoul, President of Quit For Good - Doctor Lorenzo Mata Jr. – called for a balanced policy that ‘will both protect the youth and help adult smokers at the same time’. Due to America’s intensified efforts to decrease youth nicotine consumption, many smokers and ex-smokers feel their access to safe, regulated tobacco harm reduction tools has been drastically limited.

Panama’s vape ban has recently been challenged by the Panamanian Tobacco Harm Reduction Association, despite having already been accepted by the Panamanian Supreme Court of Justice. The advocacy organisation contend that prohibition is unlawful, and hope that the hordes of evidence in favour of vaping as a harm reduction tool will reign supreme before it’s too late. Alberto Gómez Hernandez of The World Vaper’s Alliance commented: “We hope the Supreme Court of Panama will review the scientific evidence on vaping, listen to users, and declare Law 315 unconstitutional.”

Greater Good

Contender

Popular vape brand Vuse Alto has taken a massive hit after the FDA permitted the sale of six flavours in the USA. In response to evidence submitted by RJ Reynolds, the FDA said: “The company did not demonstrate that the menthol and mixed berry-flavoured products provided an added benefit for adults who smoke cigarettes. “In terms of a complete switch or significant smoking reduction — relative to that of tobacco-flavoured products that is sufficient to outweigh the known risks to youth”.

TALK IT OUT Family psychotherapist, Fiona Yassin, has stepped forward to answer questions from concerned parents across the UK, many of whom are worried about the ‘vaping epidemic’ amongst children and teenagers.

Fiona stated: “Because a young person’s brain is still developing, they are more vulnerable to the impact of certain external and internal factors.” “This may lead to long-term changes in their mental health, physical well-being, and interactions with others.” Her principal advice was encouraging parents to open a calm and nurturing dialogue with their children regarding vaping, and to express care over judgement.

The vape shop hopes that Rayner, nicknamed the Vape Dragon by her children, will recognise the warm welcome and pay a visit, with the shop being only a short walk from Liverpool’s ACC. The owner has also assembled a Riot E-liquid “Wall of Fame”, a collage of adult celebrities and public figures – now including Angela Rayner who have used vapes to quit smoking.

The UKVIA has announced the launch of a new online information hub designed to provide vapers with information on recycling. The organisation hopes that the campaign will encourage vapers, the vaping industry, and retailers across the country to act now for the benefit of the environment’. Vapers will be provided with information on the ‘dos and don’ts’ of recycling single-use vapes as well as being offered various locations where they can correctly dispose of their device. Additionally, pubs, clubs, and other outlets will have access to download free educational resources to help companies educate customers on the importance of recycling.

GUESS WHO’S Back The Minister for Health in Ireland, Stephen Donnelly, has announced the initiation of a historic legislation, one which will see all disposable vapes - for all ages - banned. The decision followed an Irish Mirror investigation concerning the popularity of vaping among children and teenagers. Tánaiste Micheál Martin, notorious for being the first Health Minister in the world to ban smoking in pubs and indoor spaces twenty years ago, has taken a personal interest in the campaign. He said: “I fully support Minister Donnelly’s vow to ban disposable vapes and to crack down on flavours and packaging.”

At only fourteen years old, Julie Williams, was paid in the form of cigarettes to do her mother’s ironing, a currency that normalised the habit from an early age. Now at 67, the grandmother-of-three, who had smoked for more than fifty years of her life, was one of the first people in Wales to be offered a lung health check. The charity Tenovus have funded the pilot for 500 patients to be screened for early signs of cancer, an act that has encouraged the Welsh Government to consider how the programme could be delivered across all of Wales.

How Much?

The Irish Heart Foundation (IHF) have encouraged the Irish Government to increase the price of cigarettes to €20 in order to prevent the next generation of teenagers from becoming addicted. Chris Macey, Director of Advocacy and Patient Support at the IHF, has stated that increasing

tax is the most effective proven method of reducing smoking rates among price-sensitive young individuals. The IHF have also called for higher taxes on vaping products, aiming to discourage young people in Ireland while ensuring adults who use vapes to quit smoking aren’t priced out.

A Villainous Vape Saturday Night Live prodigy, Chris Parnell, has taken on the role of an evil vape in a new Truth Initiative campaign aimed at deterring teenagers from vaping. The prominent voice actor says he hopes that the “crafty and deceptive” vape character will discourage young people from using vapes “as a way to cope with stress and anxiety.” The videos, titled ‘Toxic Therapy From Your Vape’, can be found on YouTube, and will hopefully encourage teenagers to reach out to the texting crisis line set up by Truth Initiative, a text-based program encouraging healthier choices in kids.

THE ProofIS IN THE Pudding A study in New Zealand has revealed that allowing people access to alternative nicotine products is more effective for smoking cessation rates than raising the tax of vaping devices across the country. Smoke Free Sweden has stated that the number of daily smokers in New Zealand has been rapidly declining since 2020-2021, with 154,000 individuals quitting cigarettes in this time frame thanks to e-cigarettes. The report found that despite the number of vapers outnumbering the number of smokers in 2022, no hospitalisations in New Zealand have reported vaping as a primary diagnosis in several years.

Nancy Loucas, public health expert and harm reduction advocate, said: “Central to the Right to Health is allowing adults who smoke to access safer alternatives to smoking.” CAPHRA urges Volker Türk – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and who the letter is addressed to – to support the call for implementation of harm reduction policies and follow New Zealand’s lead in recognising its importance.

The U.S Court of Appeals has ruled that the FDA failed to conduct a proper analysis when rejecting Fontem’s vaping product applications. The judges stated in their ruling: “While the FDA identified multiple ‘deficiencies’, it failed to analyse the trade-offs necessary to make public health finding. “Nor did the agency explain how the specific deficiencies relate to its overall conclusion that Fontem failed to display its unflavoured products were appropriate for the protection of public health.” This ruling could affect the future of the FDA’S regulatory approach to vaping products specifically the way in which it asses PMTAs.

PROMISES PROMISES

Rishi Sunak proposes comprehensive smoking reforms: stricter regulations on vaping and an incremental ban on cigarettes aimed at improving public health. Words: Grace Lynk

18 l VM48

During the recent Tory Party Conference, Rishi Sunak announced a huge smoking reform, one that will implement stricter laws for smokers living in the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister outlined his plans to raise the legal age to purchases cigarettes by one year every year, meaning that a fourteen-year-old today would never legally be able to buy tobacco. Sunak said: “Four in five smokers have started by the time they’re 20. “Later, the vast majority are trying to quit, but fail because they’re addicted, and they wish they had never taken up the habit in the first place.” If the Prime Minister’s plan is implemented, the UK would become the first in Europe to ban the sales of cigarettes to young people…in a bid to promote the next generation to grow up smoke-free. Sunak has stated that the vote in parliament on this matter will be ‘free’, insisting how unfair it would be to take away the rights of current smokers through a drastic change in the law. The incremental style ban mimics closely the ban in New Zealand, with ministers in the UK hoping that by copying this system, current pressures on the NHS will be eased. However, the Conservative Party have not put all their focus into the new smoking system, but are also doubling down on their intent to shift vape restrictions in the UK. In a video posted to Facebook, Sunak said: “As any teacher or parent knows, we also need to crack down on youth vaping, so we’re consulting on that too. “By reducing their appeal and accessibility to children.” The Party aspire to do this by introducing restrictions on flavours, packing displays, and monitoring the way disposable vapes are currently sold and consumed across the country. Responses, as always, have been mixed, with some celebrating the idea of a smoke-free generation, and others struggling to believe that promises will be delivered.

public towards the Conservative Party, with one comment reading: “Promises the moon on a stick – in ten years, it’s irrelevant.” Despite receiving an onslaught of applause from party members during his speech, it is clear that the foundations of Sunak’s promises have not paved the way for a trusting population. This in light of the ‘Swap to Stop’ programme introduced by Sunak earlier this year – a system where smokers had access to free vape devices – makes these drastic transformations seem like a desperate scramble for immediate change.

One user on Facebook said: “I actually agree with this excellent idea”, an optimistic response that was quickly contradicted by a swarm of angry voters all wishing to have their voices heard. Another user stated: “I think this is absolutely ridiculous. The UK Government profits off the sale of cigarettes and vapes. It’s a known fact.” The debates across both Twitter and Facebook display an overt distrust from the VM48 l 19

The American Lung Association wants to save lives by improving lung health, so why are they so anti-vaping? Words: Emily Malia 20 l VM48

It’s no secret that millions of smokers across the globe have been able to quit the deadly habit, thanks to vaping. However, speculations are rising against the American Lung Association (ALA), who seemingly want to suppress information that details some nicotine products being safer than others, like e-cigarettes. Following on from the release of the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) strategic five-year plan, the ALA submitted comments recommending that the CTP ‘remove language that references informing adults about the relative risk of tobacco products.’ The description in question is the fourth goal stating, ‘Improve Public Health by Enhancing Knowledge and Understanding of CTP Tobacco Product Regulation and the Risks Associated with Tobacco Product Use.’ The comments from the American Lung Association didn’t stop there, it went on to say: “CTP should have no part in the industry’s efforts to sustain addiction through the failed and flawed notion that adult smokers should switch to e-cigarettes.” Enlighten us, what is so ‘flawed’ about adults choosing to change to a 95 percent safer alternative to smoking? Afterall, that was the goal of the CTP, to inform users of the benefits of switching to a cessation tool. It seems, the suggestion to those fighting the ‘addiction’ is to stop using nicotine altogether, which we know isn’t that easy when you have a dependence, if it was, we wouldn’t be having this issue. These comments are ignorant of the fact that to achieve a smoke free future – a goal they share with the vaping community – it has to be one without nicotine, and that’s just not possible. When one out of every 16 Americans will receive a lung cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, comments like these can

impact the number of preventable deaths through scaremongering…something you’d hope the ALA would consider. It’s infuriating that US public health groups can’t follow in the footsteps of other health organisations. endorsing vaping to aid people in quitting around the world. An example of this is the British Lung Foundation that tells people who smoke ‘swapping cigarettes for an e-cig can improve your symptoms of lung conditions like asthma and COPD.’ Meanwhile, The Canadian Lung Health Foundation also states: “If you do smoke, switching completely to electronic cigarettes may significantly reduce your exposure to toxic chemicals and carcinogens.” The backlash of these comments draws attention from numerous college professors, including Professor Michael Siegel of the Tufts University School of Medicine. He wrote: “This is about as damaging a recommendation as I have ever seen from a supposed public health organisation. I must condemn it in the strongest terms. “ On its website, the ‘mission’ of the American Lung Association is to ‘save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease’ but there is no way we can achieve this without the help of vaping. Ernest Groman (MD) of the Vienna Nicotine Institute also said: “The data show that the abstinence approach is inadequate. The solution for smokers is to switch to less harmful alternatives.” It could make a further impact on the lung health of smokers across the US if for once and for all, the ALA embraced e-cigarettes and stopped playing into the media frenzy that continues to scare smokers away from the life-saving tool.

THIS IS ABOUT AS DAMAGING A RECOMMENDATION AS I HAVE EVER SEEN FROM A SUPPOSED PUBLIC HEALTH ORGANISATION. VM48 l 21

One of the latest areas for concern is tobacco-related illnesses and deaths, which will be targeted in a number of ways according to an updated proposal: • New investments to reduce the impact of menthol and other flavoured commercial tobacco products in communities that experience health disparities. • An updated plan to decrease the impact of smoking on Americans’ health by expanding efforts to prevent smoking and to support everyone who wants to quit. • A pilot program to increase veteran engagement in tobacco use treatment.

Two new studies from Manchester Metropolitan and Queen Mary University have coincidentally overlapped in the wake of misinformation surrounding the impact of e-cigarettes. Words: Grace Lynk 26 l VM48

new study, led by researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University, is the first of its kind to delve into the long-term impact that vaping might have on the cardiovascular system. Expected to take 18 months to complete, the study will assess health markers in individuals who use e-cigarettes in comparison to those who smoke traditional tobacco. Dr Maxime Boidin, a researcher at the University’s Institute of Sport, said: “We know already the long-term impact of smoking behaviour on cardiovascular health, but for e-cigarettes, it is not the case.” The quality of blood vessels – or more particularly, their elasticity – will be measured within the subjects of the study to determine the acute effects of vaping long-term. Participants will also be expected to take part in a fitness test, where their cerebral blood flow and ability to take in oxygen will also be measured. To reduce the risk of variables, all participants will be tested in a fasted state, meaning they won’t be permitted food, caffeine, cigarettes, or vaping devices for the duration of each test. Dr Boidin continued: “Although our research won’t be published for around 18 months, we hope that our findings will help to inform guidelines and regulations on the sale of e-cigarettes in the future.” Research aside, the long-term impact of vaping has been a hot topic of conversation around the world for many years, with Professor Louise Kyne also discussing the matter on RTÉ News. She has said that due to the lack of research into the long-term effects, that there is a two-to-five-fold increased risk of people moving onto smoking if they start vaping, a statistic seemingly originating from nowhere. One Twitter response to this comment read: “Maybe just ban cigarettes/tobacco.

THIS COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS PROVIDES REASSURANCE THAT COUNTRIES WHICH HAVE ADOPTED A MORE PROGRESSIVE STANCE TOWARDS E-CIGARETTES HAVE NOT SEEN A DETRIMENTAL IMPACT ON SMOKING RATES. doesn’t act as a gateway into smoking, has been dubbed ‘the most comprehensive study’ of its kind. The study compared the use and sales of e-cigarettes with that of smoking rates and tobacco sales in countries with historically similar smoking trajectories, but varying regulations on vaping. It was discovered that the decline in smokers in Australia, where vapes are banned, has been slower than in both the UK and the USA, with the decline of cigarette sales in the UK also accelerating faster.

“There’s decades of research and related deaths to justify it. Also…you can’t progress onto cigarettes if they aren’t available.”

Professor Peter Hajek from QMU stated: “The results of this study alleviate the concern that access to e-cigarettes and other low-risk nicotine products promote smoking.”

Although an interesting proposition in response to the RTÉ interview, new research led by The Queen Mary University (QMU) suggests that the comments made by Professor Kyne are entirely misinformative.

“There is no sign of that, and there are some signs that they in fact compete against cigarettes, but more data over a longer time period is needed to determine the size of this effect.”

Funded by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR), the new study, which found that vaping

Co-author of the study, Professor Lion Shahab, added: “This comprehensive analysis provides reassurance that countries which have adopted a more progressive stance towards e-cigarettes have not seen a detrimental impact on smoking rates.” “If anything, the results suggest that – more likely than not – e-cigarettes have displaced harmful cigarettes in those countries so far.”

Named ‘Merci la vape’ translated to ‘Thank you Vaping’, the study also found that 25 percent would also consider returning to conventional cigarettes if the ban is implemented or if taxes on products are too high. Commissioned by four French vaping consumer organisations, it questioned 40,000 individuals across France, with 98 percent of those being e-cigarette users. Publishing the concerning results for vapers, the study has started to gain support from healthcare bodies and the government. Aiduce, Sovape, La Vape Du Coeur and Fivape are the four behind the sixmonth survey, with the group defining it at ‘one of the largest investigations ever carried out over a population of vaping product consumers’. The study states that banning vaping products could be counterproductive for the public health of France. Arguing that by pushing vapers to buy black market products with unchecked safety levels, it could also run unnecessary risks for individuals. The study’s author wrote: “Condemning former cigarette smokers to tobacco flavour as their only option is just absurd, because it’s precisely the diversity of flavours which facilitates quitting cigarette smoking. “The making and sale of e-liquids by professionals is the best way to guarantee their control for users’ safety.” This all comes after Élisabeth Borne, Prime Minister of France, outlined her government’s plans to prohibit the sale of disposable e-cigarettes.

CONDEMNING FORMER CIGARETTE SMOKERS TO TOBACCO FLAVOUR AS THEIR ONLY OPTION IS JUST ABSURD.

Included in the French government planned 2024 budget, there is also a wider plan to reduce smoking, which Borne said was the cause of 75,000 deaths a year in the country. Calling them ‘the famous puffs which give bad habits to young people’, Borne stated her concern for fruity flavours being a ‘gateway’ to smoking. Speaking on French radio station RTL, the Prime Minister said: “They give bad habits to young people. “We can say that it’s not nicotine, but it gives young people a reflex and a gesture that they get used to. This is how they then move towards smoking and we must stop that.”

SOONER RATHER THAN LATER

Supreme, the company behind 88vape, has unveiled new plans to act ahead of possible regulations by removing bright colours and certain descriptors from its products. Words: Hannah Rhodes E-cigarette companies have begun to bunker down since Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a potential ban on disposables and changes to vape regulations in the UK. One establishment ahead of the curb is Supreme – the parent company of 88vape – which was recently targeted by the media due to their £350,000 donation f rom the Conservative party back in May of this year. The Manchester-based company is currently one of the biggest UK suppliers, with their single-use vapes available in the likes of Tesco, Morrison’s, and B&M. Since the news broke of the talks at Westminster of changes to disposables and vapes alike, Supreme has seen a 20 percent loss of their shares. In response, Supreme is currently undergoing a mass rebrand including changes to their previously bright packages, which is f requently pointed to as one of the reasons behind youth vaping. Aside f rom this, consumers of 88vape

products can, unfortunately, say goodbye to some of their beloved flavours such as “Peach Dream” and “Bubblegum”, with efforts to take effect in the coming months. In an announcement, Supreme said it has already begun a ‘series of proactive measures within our vaping division, 88vape, with the intent to mitigate the growing rise of underage vaping.’ The company also said: “As an industry leader, and to ensure our brands do not create any interest f rom underage vapers. “We announce the following pro-active measures over the coming months, which we believe should be adopted across the UK market. We are delighted to announce our proposed changes.”

WE ANNOUNCE THE FOLLOWING PRO-ACTIVE MEASURES OVER THE COMING MONTHS, WHICH WE BELIEVE SHOULD BE ADOPTED ACROSS THE UK MARKET.

Luc Badain, Sales Director for Supreme Imports Ltd, detailed the f ive-point plan of action: - Plain packaging: Packaging across the entire range of 88vape disposables and 10ml liquids are currently being assessed to ensure the use of colour is very limited and the packaging is plain and uniform. - Supreme will ensure that the shopper’s experience is not impacted, and the use of colour will be present only to ensure the consumer can distinguish one stock item f rom another. - Disposables: 88vape bright coloured disposables will be switched to either plain black, white, or grey hardware with bright colours discontinued at the earliest convenience. - Flavours: The naming of flavours will be simplif ied, for example, “Peach Dream” will become “Peach” and “Fruit Crush” will become “Fruit” to avoid any risk of children being interested in the flavour. - Any flavours perceived to be appealing to children will be removed entirely f rom the range. - Age verif ication protocols: The company will increase its due diligence to ensure all retailers and e-tailers in its network have robust age verif ication protocols in place. - Supreme will no longer trade with those who cannot comply with this requirement. - Store location: It is strongly recommended to Supreme’s retailers that vaping products are not located where they can be easily accessed or come into contact with children.

The current plan is for this to come as a soft change meaning no changes to barcode or cost prices. Where products are changing name, Supreme will feature both old flavour and new flavour names on the CDU to help with the short-term merchandising in-store.

Words: Hannah Rhodes

Known for their vibrant, intense e-liquids, UK based company Double Drip reveals their latest big plan to expand into the world of disposables. VM48 l 37

Some of our readers may not have heard of Double Drip before, can you inform Vapouround a little more about the brand and on the process of getting to where it is today on the market? “Double Drip was created when we noticed that people were growing tired of the same old traditional flavours like tobacco, menthol, and basic fruits. “We realised this was a chance to make something fresh and exciting and use it to help people make the leap to becoming completely smoke-free. “Better flavours would obviously increase the chances of people quitting smoking for good. “In 2016, we launched Double Drip with four unique flavours and the response was overwhelmingly positive, so we knew we had to keep pushing forward. “That’s why we really value our customers’ input and constantly seek out recommendations from them, for new and innovative flavours. “It’s our customers who drive our growth, and they are at the heart of every new drop.” What makes Double Drip Disposable Pods different to other disposables on the market? “In developing Double Drip’s Disposable Pods, we zeroed in on what felt missing in the market—a large range of premium flavours in a straightforward, convenient design. “With 20 flavours, we’ve channelled the Double Drip spirit into something you can carry in your pocket. “For us, it’s not just about creating another disposable, it’s about catering to what the market is crying out for.”

Double Drip Disposable Pods come in 20 different flavours. What does the formulation process look like and how did you narrow down your choices to reach your current selection? “Perfecting our Double Drip Disposable Pods was no small feat. It took a crew of dedicated testers with a knack for flavours to trial and scrutinise every contender, over and over. “That meant returning to square one more than once, refining our flavours until we hit those ‘eureka’ moments.

38 l VM48

“Starting with a group of potential hits, we mixed and matched, embraced the critiques, and let the collective ‘wows’ guide us to the final 20.”

“Simple, straightforward, and still packed with the flavour people expect from us - that’s the kind of convenience we wanted to bring to the table.

With a current backlog in TPD applications, how did you navigate this process and were there any challenges you faced along the way?

“Looking ahead, we’re always exploring new innovations. While we can’t reveal too much, we’re really excited about what’s on the horizon.

“It was surprisingly smooth and that’s all down to our brilliant compliance team, who were certainly kept on their toes throughout the process.

“Stay tuned…we can’t wait to show everyone what’s coming in the future!”

“They took the reins, which let us get on with finalising our marketing plan, so everything was able to go ahead without a hitch.”

Due to recent concerns over e-waste created by disposables, have you implemented any steps to allow users of Double Drip Disposable Pods access to recycling facilities? “Recycling is something we take very seriously, and we’re committed to being part of the solution, which is why we partnered with Veolia to provide recycling vessels to all of our stores. “We also encourage retailers to provide the same facilities and ask our customers to recycle their devices whenever they can; where that’s not possible, we encourage them to dispose responsibly.”

When can consumers expect to see Double Drip Disposable Pods on the market? “Double Drip Disposable Pods will hit the shelves at the start of November. “Vapers will be able to find them in vape stores and our Double Drip website, as well as a selection of retailers, both online and instore.”

What made you decide to expand your range to include disposable vapes? Are there any other expansions we can expect to see from you in the near future? “We noticed that more and more of our customers were looking for something easy to use without skimping on the great tastes they’ve come to love. “That’s really what sparked our move into disposable vapes. They’re the perfect choice for convenience or for those new to vaping, and eager for a healthier lifestyle switch.

PLAY BY THE RULES OR WE MAY NO LONGER HAVE A VAPE INDUSTRY UKVIA warns that the UK vape industry is on a knife edge between proportionate and potentially devastating regulation. Words: John Dunne, Director General

42 l VM48

I

t seems traditional in the UK that many organisations wind down at this time of year as we approach the holiday season but for the UKVIA, the opposite is true.

The entire year has been an exceptionally busy one and a look back at our news archives for January shows how the scene was set at the outset for the rest of 2023. We reported that the UKVIA was increasingly in demand with interview requests from the national media; that pressure was mounting to ban single use devices and a warning that ‘irresponsible’ vape brands would kill the industry by marketing to children. Those themes continued, and ramped up considerably, throughout the year and are still going strong now. In September, The Independent sent shockwaves throughout the industry when it announced that single-use vapes could be banned ‘as early as next week’ amid fears that children could become addicted to them. The ban did not happen but the concerns have not gone away and it is still possible that the Government could go down this route. There are currently a raft of proposals for stronger UK vape legislation on the table to tackle youth vaping including: • Restricting flavours • Regulating point of sale displays • Regulating packaging and presentation • Considering restricting the supply and sale of disposable vapes • Whether regulations should extend to non-nicotine vapes and • Taking action on the affordability of vapes We have just completed our annual UKVIA Forum where the issues of youth vaping, environmental concerns, industry responsibility and the potential for a government clampdown on single use vapes were all high on the agenda. As was made clear at the Forum by keynote speaker Adam Afriyie MP, the Government is not prepared to leave issues of youth uptake and the environment unchecked and we can expect more stringent regulation when the Government reveals the outcome of its vape review.

This point was reinforced by Lord James Bethell who accepted that while vaping had undoubtedly helped improve the health of the country, also warned that 'heavy handed' regulation is on the horizon unless youth uptake is tackled. Many companies work hard to ensure that they fully comply with all UK regulations but that is not universally so. I wrote this column as I was about to fly out to the China Electronics Chamber of Commerce (ECCC) annual conference. As well as the ECCC, there were representatives from the other three members of the Global Vape Alliance (UKVIA, VTA and IEVA) as well as leading members of other industry associations to debate and discuss the main issues facing the industry. I gave an update on the regulatory landscape in the UK, the potential dangers posed by the current Government review and warned that picking and choosing which regulations to comply with was no longer an option. My message was simple and stark: “Play by the rules or we may no longer have a vape industry.” This was similar to the talk I gave at the UKVIA Forum in November when I said that the industry was balanced precariously on a knife edge between prohibition and success. I told the Forum: “Government policy could be heading in a new direction, one that unfortunately could have significant consequences for all those who depend on vaping to not revert to old and bad habits.” Quite simply, the clock is running out for us to show the Government that we are grown up and responsible so that we don’t have to face the consequences of living with harsh new regulation which is potentially in none of our interests.

GOVERNMENT POLICY COULD BE HEADING IN A NEW DIRECTION, ONE THAT UNFORTUNATELY COULD HAVE SIGNIFICANT CONSEQUENCES FOR ALL THOSE WHO DEPEND ON VAPING

Flavour restrictions in the US have inevitably resulted in an increase in cigarette sales, a bittersweet moment for harm reduction advocates who have been warning policymakers for years. Words: Grace Lynk

44 l VM48

hat a surprise! It turns out, in a shocking turn of events, that restricting vape flavours was the genius move we all needed to abandon cessation tools backed by science. Who could’ve possibly guessed that adult consumers, when deprived of their favourite vape flavours, would revert to the time-tested allure of tobacco-filled cigarettes? Let’s see…only every vaping and harm reduction advocate ever, all of whom have been incessantly warning policymakers for years about the potential backlash of such a drastic and unfair change. Despite these forewarnings, it is only in hindsight that the vaping community are finally being taken seriously, with new research funded by the FDA and National Institutes of Health showcasing the results we all anticipated. The study’s authors have released the shocking, but foreseeable, statistic that for every 0.7ml vape pod not sold due to flavour restrictions, 15 cigarettes take its place. Several US states, and close to 400 local governments, have already passed laws restricting non-tobacco and menthol vape flavours, a feat which has been the long-term objective of tobacco control organisations and their biggest funder, Bloomberg. In light of this, a working paper by multiple researchers, has unveiled conclusions which prove that such policies encourage vapers of all ages to replace e-cigarettes with traditional tobacco. Numerous key findings were named, some of which have been summarised by the researchers below. Vape sales decline and cigarette sales increase when a greater percentage of state residents is subject to flavour-restrictive policies. The relationship between vape flavour restrictions and increased cigarette sales is consistent across cigarette product age profiles, including for brands disproportionately used by underage youth. And finally, both outright flavour bans and laws restricting flavoured vapes to certain retail stores reduce vape sales and increase cigarette sales once they’ve been in effect for a year or more. In a world where decisions are designated by a select few uninformed individuals, it has now become evident that strict regulations on vape flavours will only funnel people back into the arms of Big Tobacco.

The authors write: “Policies making ENDS (Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems) more expensive, less accessible, or less appealing appear to incentivise substitution towards cigarettes.” The FDA also recently announced a proposed rule to extend the public comment period for the “Requirements for Tobacco Product Manufacturing Practice” by 30 days. Industry experts believe that the prolonged review should result in policies balancing tobacco control and e-cigarette industry growth, protecting young people while not limiting access for adults. The final results, however, are expected to impose higher standards on e-cigarette companies to ensure both product quality and safety for consumers, helping to standardise the vape market. Jim McDonald, member of the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-Free Alternatives, said: “Smokers created vaping without help from the tobacco industry or anti-smoking crusaders, and I believe vapers have the right to continue innovating to help themselves.” So, here’s to vape flavour restrictions, the highly anticipated boon for cigarette companies, because who needs to make progress when the nostalgic smell of a smoke-filled room is just as accessible?

“SMOKERS CREATED VAPING WITHOUT HELP FROM THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY OR ANTI-SMOKING CRUSADERS, AND I BELIEVE VAPERS HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONTINUE INNOVATING TO HELP THEMSELVES.” VM48 l 45

THE AMERICAN VAPING ASSOCIATION LEAVES A Words: Emily Malia

After 10 years of dedication to the cause of helping smokers make the switch, the American Vaping Association has shut down…however, it’s legacy lives on.

Legacy

aunching in 2014, The American Vaping Association (AVA) was the brainchild of Gregory Conley, set out to serve as a platform to defend and legitimize vaping across the U.S. He made it a largely one-man operation to advocate for the cessation tool and it became the go-to source for mainstream media looking for a vaper’s side to the argument. Alongside vape business owners, the president of the AVA tried to combat the misinforming news coverage and anti-vaping campaigns that were spreading online and in our communities. This involved being interviewed for major news networks, debating anti-vaping activists on the radio, organising protests and speaking against bills – the vaping community has the AVA to thank for a hell of a lot! It was with a heavy heart that its founder released a public letter announcing that the group was shutting down its operations moving forward, as he continues to fight the good fight in his capacity at American Vaping Manufacturers. As the organisation comes to an end, it’s important to take the time to reflect on some of the incredible work that the American Vaping Association has done for the right to vape. Gregory Conley became the most quoted person in the U.S. news media on vaping news and policy and on behalf of the AVA lead numerous conversations around vape bans, taxing and regulations.

48 l VM48

In 2019, Conley participated in a White House listening session where he explained to former President Donald Trump about the importance of flavoured nicotine vaping products for those looking to quit smoking. As a part of this discussion, he also came out to defend e-cigarettes against the alleged ‘EVALI’ lung injury outbreak, ensuring it was clear that vapes were not responsible for this. In his letter, Gregory reminisced on this moment writing: “It was a testament to the collective strength and impact of our community that we were invited to sit in the White House Cabinet Room. “I will always cherish that experience, particularly the flood of kind messages that came in from vapers around the United States before, during, and after the meeting.” Another key moment that was brought to light in this statement was the involvement the AVA had in creating a Netflix documentary, based on the nonfiction book ‘Big Vape’. Gregory spent hours filming in New York to be a part of what is considered a ‘must-see docuseries’ helping to push back against the ‘false narratives’ that have developed around e-cigarettes. Whilst these were huge moments in the media spreading awareness and correcting misinformation, it was helping smokers quit that was at the heart of what the AVA did, and that is proven in the numbers. Conley wrote: “During our active years, AVA managed to accumulate surplus funds of approximately $15,000. In line with our commitment to the vaping community and harm reduction, these funds have been split between two causes that are close to our hearts.” Half of the surplus was donated to the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association and the other to the Influence Foundation. The foundation is an organisation that supports the online publication Filter - a website committed to breaking stories on tobacco harm reduction, which of course, is vital to the movement. It may be the end of an era for the AVA and Gregory Conley, but it’s certainly not the end of the fight for the right to vape. In his final letter he wrote: “Looking ahead, the vaping industry—and the tobacco and nicotine industry as a whole—face immense challenges, from byzantine regulatory hurdles to billionaire-funded misinformation campaigns. “My work with the AVM will continue and is geared towards addressing some of these challenges headon.”

WHILE IT SADDENS ME TO SEE THIS CHAPTER OF OUR JOURNEY COME TO AN END, I AM FILLED WITH PRIDE AND GRATITUDE FOR WHAT WE HAVE ACCOMPLISHED TOGETHER OVER THE YEARS VM48 l 49

Crystal

CLEAR

, renowned company famous for the Crystal Bar, have put some time aside to discuss the diff iculties and successes of being a household name in the vaping industry. Words: Grace Lynk SKE currently operates in over fifty countries. What difficulties have you faced ensuring your global operation runs smoothly and effectively? Operating globally presents a range of challenges for SKE, the most challenging one being legal compliance. Navigating different legal frameworks and compliance requirements is complex, however, we stay informed and adhere to local laws.

Here are more challenges we have faced:

50 l VM48

- Cultural Adaptation: Adapting to diverse cultures, languages, and business customs is crucial. Understanding and respecting local cultures is essential for success.

- Supply Chain Challenges: Coordinating the movement of goods across borders involves dealing with custom regulations, transportation issues, and supply chain disruptions.

- Technology Adaptation: Varying levels of technological infrastructure globally affect operational efficiency. Companies need to adapt technology solutions to local contexts.

What is the most popular flavour or product among your consumers? Why do you think this is? After looking through some market research, customer feedback, and the internal efforts of our marketing and brand teams who compiled the data, we found that the most popular flavours are Lemon and Lime, Watermelon, Berries and Cherry Ice. If a flavour or product consistently meets or exceeds customer expectations, it's likely to be popular.

What was your inspiration behind the fashionable Crystal Bar design? How do your devices compare to others on the market? In crafting product designs, companies seek inspiration and distinctiveness, often leveraging crystal designs to carve a niche in a competitive market. Beyond aesthetics, differentiation is achieved through unique features, innovative technology, and distinctive design elements. A fundamental consideration in this process is understanding the needs and preferences of the target market to ensure that the end product aligns with consumer expectations.

What is an important and distinctive feature of SKE’s vaping devices? One paramount aspect of SKE is the mesh coil technology, a key contributor to functionality and performance.

The focus here is on delivering an exceptional flavour experience, aiming to captivate consumers with an explosive burst of taste. This commitment to enhancing the sensory aspect of the product underscores the company’s dedication to providing a standout and satisfying user experience.

Can consumers anticipate any new and exciting products or campaigns from SKE in the future? Could you tell us anything about them? Absolutely! Consumers can anticipate an enhanced and highly competitive vaping device from SKE in the near future. SKE is gearing up to introduce a significantly improved product, promising an even better vaping experience. Furthermore, by the end of 2023, our company has plans to sponsor GrooveBox for a music party held in Nottingham, a collaboration of technology and entertainment.

SKE IS GEARING UP TO INTRODUCE A SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED PRODUCT, PROMISING AN EVEN BETTER VAPING EXPERIENCE. VM48 l 51

WELL, WELL, WELL… Unmasking Wellness Vapes: The truth behind the hype, and why their miraculous health claims might just be smoke and mirrors. Words: Grace Lynk

54 l VM48

It’s safe to say that these ground-breaking products have generated a fair amount of buzz, but the line between fact and fiction becomes a bit blurry when these vape ‘medical miracles’ continue making unsubstantiated claims. Thankfully, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have taken it upon themselves to warn consumers against the ridiculous idea that wellness vapes can prevent dementia or even – and this isn’t a joke – fight cancer. The grandiose all-healing claims are rooted in the components, with natural compounds, herbs and essential oils being added to the products to ensure ‘good health’. Beyond nicotine, wellness vapes attempt to offer melatonininduced calmness, infused aromatherapy, and in some cases, doses of caffeine through inhalation, none of which harbour any scientific evidence to prove they work. As of yet, there has been little to no research conducted to help corroborate the advantages of inhaling new substances over traditional methods of consumption. Of course, while a lot of ingredients in wellness vapes are safe to consume as a standalone, heated inhalation is an entirely

separate category that could cause health risks for users simply looking for a pick-me-up.

In recent years, the market for wellness products has expanded to include a new – and rather controversial – category, with wellness vapes now being promoted as a means of achieving physical and mental wellbeing.

A case in point comes from The American Lung Association identifying vitamin E acetate within cannabis vapes as the primary cause of severe lung inflammation for thousands of people in the US in 2019.

THE EASIEST WAY TO GET DRUGS SUCH AS VITAMINS AND CAFFEINE IS TO SWALLOW IT AS A TABLET

Dr Jody Morgan, a chemical toxicologist at the University of Wollongong, has also brought to light the potentially damaging compounds formed in these wellness vapes after her analysis on the e-liquids. In an article surrounding ‘wellness vapes’ by ABC News, Dr Morgan told the publication that chemicals found in antifreeze, or elements seen in insecticides

and disinfectants, were found in certain wellness vapes…an overt indicator of the risks individuals run when inhaling. However, in the face of scientific evidence, the marketing of wellness vapes has yet to become a thing of the past, with articles and promotions regularly being posted online. Dr Aaron Scott, a respiratory scientist at the University of Birmingham, expressed his disgust at the huge market these new products have gained thanks to social media. He said: “Wellness vapes are a misnomer…it is amazing to me that they have generated such a market.” The ABC article on the contentious topic opened a dialogue on Facebook, with many users assembling to share in their confusion and frustration regarding wellness e-cigarettes. One sarcastic user said: “Nature probably evolved a digestive system for a reason. Suppositories might be a safer approach for the avant-garde, but less cool in public.” Another user commented: “The easiest way to get drugs such as vitamins and caffeine is to swallow it as a tablet. Some drugs such as adrenaline/salbutamol have been given by aerosol… “But you need to know what you are doing. Where is the TGA? The Federal Minister should be looking into their response.” At the end of the day, it’s always best to remain vigilant when trying new wellness products, but when hordes of evidence on the dangers of wellness vapes comes to light…it might be best to listen.

THIS WILL BE TOUGH FOR-UM TO BEAT! This year’s UKVIA Industry Forum was so comprehensive that I was really only left with one question…how on earth do they pack so much into one day? Words: Oliver Smith VM48 l 59

THIS WAS A WELL-RUN, WELLRESEARCHED AND WELL-ORGANISED EVENT WHICH ATTRACTED LEADING EXPERTS FROM ALL SECTORS OF THE INDUSTRY 60 l VM48

Given that vaping has hardly been out of the news this year, I was intrigued to f ind out just what the tone of the annual UKVIA Forum would be. I also wondered how f riendly everyone would be towards the press as so much of what has been written about the vape industry in the mainstream media has been questionable to say the least. However, as soon as I arrived at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster, I knew I need not have worried; not only did I spot a number of other journalists at the Forum but there were many copies of Vapouround Magazine prominently on display. I arrived early enough to check out the exhibition area which seemed to be much larger than last year and where some really big names were present including FEELM, VAPORESSO, ELFBAR and Chubby Gorilla. When looking around I could see that many of the companies were using new or innovative technologies…clearly they were all competing for the ‘UKVIA Innovation of the Year’ award which was chosen by Forum delegates and announced at the Awards Dinner in the evening. The huge space reserved for networking, snacks and lunch was always full during the networking breaks and there was a real buzz about the place. For the conference itself, the UKVIA ticked off all the main talking points…youth vaping – check; environmental concerns – check; public perceptions towards vaping – check; the current political landscape – check and so it went on. The conference ran like clockwork with co-chairs Robert Sidebottom and Jeannie Cameron keeping everything on schedule…and as panellists all keen to get their points of view across this was no mean feat. I cannot possibly describe everything which took place but these are some of my highlights f rom the day: UKVIA Director General John Dunne highlighting youth vaping, illicit product sales and environmental concerns as the main challenges for the industry. Adam Af riyie MP, the Vice-Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Vaping, describing the sector as 'the innovators, job makers and a part of the healthcare industry'. While Lord James Bethell telling the Forum that: "The humble vape has done so much to improve

the health of our country...and that’s something I pay tribute to." Konstantinos Farsalinos, a renowned physician and research associate, describing flavour bans as a de-facto bans on vape products themselves. The f irst panel discussion, Victory for Vaping, heard that overwhelmingly negative reporting in the mainstream media was putting many smokers against switching to a far less harmful alternative while the discussion on youth vaping and the rise in illicit products was one of the standouts of the Forum for me. Arcus Compliance Managing Director Robert Sidebottom highlighting new FOI research which showed that, between 2021 and early 2023, just £2,188 has been issued in f ines for underage/illicit vapes sales across 11 major provincial UK cities. Members of this panel felt that a retail registration scheme would be effective in tackling illicit trade and could aid regulators in identifying rogue traders, while it was also argued that supply chain control could be effective in addressing illegal trade. Michiel Carmel, UK Partner for MyCheckr, explaining how innovation was key to addressing youth sales and gave insights into new anonymous age-verif ication technology which used computer facial recognition to accurately determine whether a customer looked under 25 and therefore needed manual ID checks. New studies into disposable vapes f rom Waste Experts and Material Focus were discussed in the panel on Sustainable Vaping which also debated the need for more recycling points, the correct disposal of vape waste and the thorny question of who should fund vape recycling initiatives. John Dunne warning that the industry was on a ‘knife-edge’ during the Great Political Debate panel on the political landscape and how a General Election could influence future vape policy while the panel looking forward to tomorrow’s vaping world heard that product innovation and research would remain critical. The closing session highlighting just how important the vape industry, and especially the sale of single use vapes, was to the retail sector with Chris Kelly, CEO of Phoenix 2 Retail, pointing out that many independent retailers would be negatively impacted without vape sales. This was a well-run, well-researched and wellorganised event which attracted leading experts f rom all sectors of the industry and I can’t wait to come back again for the 2024 UKVIA Forum. CLOSER TO THE

SUMMI T

As the sixth Tobacco Harm Reduction Summit took place, organisations from across the globe discussed what more can be done to reach the summit of a smokefree future. Words: Emily Malia

N

ow more than ever, the spread of misinformation is rife, and with the ‘war on vaping’ not showing any signs of stopping…more work must be done to fight the good fight.

This year, the sixth annual Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) Summit took place in Athens and initiated some incredibly topical conversations, with its key message being that the resistance to harm reduction is growing. Following on from a very successful fifth summit, the event aims to attract researchers, clinicians and scientists from diverse fields and across the globe to discuss their work in THR. The objective of the Summit is to create opportunities for scientists from all walks of life to both share and challenge recent data related to the benefits and the risks associated with alternative tobacco product use.

but it seems that the online hysteria surrounding anti-vaping is gradually becoming a battle of political correctness of those with differing opinions. Martin Cullip, who spoke on behalf of the consumers, said:“We cannot allow these products to be banned now, as the WHO seems to wish, because we will have to wait for some 60 years before we can get them back.” Also advocating for the importance of harm reduction in his presentation was Professor Heino Stover. He said: “The fact that a non-smoke nicotine delivery system was rapidly available and widely used seems to be the most likely explanation for Sweden’s great success in reducing smoking rates and smoking related diseases.”

Along with this, they discuss and debate medical, regulatory, legal and policy issues and provide an environment where rule-makers can share their course of action.

One of New Zealand’s leading tobacco researchers. Marewa Glover put it best when she said ‘education is number one, not taxes’ and Glover believes that misconceptions were part of the reason why smoking cessation is hard to achieve.

This year, representatives at the summit have called for the alignment of communication in order to clamp down on the mixed messaging that surrounds tobacco novel products.

The tobacco researcher thinks it's important to help educate those who lack access to the knowledge as they are more likely to reject health risk messages.

However, they won’t have to face this alone. The international association on Smoking Control and Harm Reduction is leading an alliance of THR organisations in the fight against false claims.

She said: “We assume that everyone knows that smoking kills, but some people really don’t know.”

The group stresses that people urgently need to give clear and strong messaging about the scientific evidence on the benefits of cessation tools, following the emergence of misleading statements that affect the trust of consumers, governments and institutions. During the first speech of the day, Professor Ezat Wan Puteh said: “The truth is, THR is a human right issue. Harm Reduction is not just about reducing the harm from substance use. “It is also about addressing stigma, marginalisation, criminalisation, inequalities and oppression, in an effort to protect health, dignity and liberty, including the liberty of making informed personal choices.” His speech was incredibly powerful, and many vaping advocates were moved online by his words,

The summit concluded with an expert panel - representing different THR organisationsdiscussing how they can collaborate in ways to advance education opportunities for health policy experts, regulators and the general public.

WE ASSUME THAT EVERYONE KNOWS THAT SMOKING KILLS, BUT SOME PEOPLE REALLY DON’T KNOW

BIG VAPE: THE RISE AND FALL OF

Juul. Once recognised across the globe as one of the most popular e-cigarettes on the market, now taints the industry so many worked hard to do right by. Words: Hannah Rhodes

VM48 l 67

From the award-winning online streaming platform – Netflix – comes the muchanticipated docuseries, which promises to expose the truth behind the multibillion-dollar company Juul. At its peak, the giant became one of the world’s fastestgrowing companies in history – over-taking Facebook four times over – with a value of nearly $40 billion USD and 68 l VM48

more than four thousand employees. And now? Well, Juul has paid nearly $3 billion in legal settlements across the United States and is estimated to be worth less than five percent of its previous self. But let’s go back to the start, before the fame, before the scandals and mayhem – to the vision that sparked the fire…

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Having finally created the ‘perfect’ five percent nicotine device, Juul began marketing. Richard Mumby – social media influencer and so-called marketing guru – was brought into the mix. Mumby, in partnership with a renowned creative director, wanted the marketing campaign for Juul to be trendy, sexy, and luxurious - essentially to attract ‘cool’ consumers.

THE SPARK Within the first five minutes, the story of Juul is already depicted to be complicated. During the opening, an anonymous fellow employee says “Everyone was there for a purpose…to build something that would change the world.” From the minds of product design students at Stanford University, Adam Bowen and James Monsees came from family-smoking backgrounds, which in turn resulted in them both developing the deadly habit. And so, the idea was born to create a cigarette alternative that was simple, design-oriented, and user friendly. From developing their first vape device model in 2010 to recruiting like-minded

people that aided in driving their vision of ‘changing the world’, what was once an idea became reality. The duo finally found investors to back their mission – one of whom was tobacco giant JTI – who offered $10 million to develop their second model ‘PAX’.

To achieve this, the pair brought in young, goodlooking models to advertise the device. During this crucial stage, only one investor was concerned about the negative impact this would have on the company and the industry. Juul’s unregulated reach on social media was limitless…a complete polar opposite to the result in

tobacco and vape shops, many of whom refused to stoke the device due to its less than favourable marketing campaign. As a result, the company turned to dishing out tens of thousands of free devices to anyone who would take one, only further fuelling the rise in the underage access to vapes. This piqued the interest of the CDC who said Juul’s damaging approach was ‘irresponsible marketing’ paired with the FDA who established a first-of-itskind list of regulations and PMTAs on all e-cigarette products. In October 2015, the board of investors decided to demote Monsees from CEO, thus giving all future power to the board. This detrimental decision would in turn seal the fate of Juul.

PAX, although a hit amongst cannabis users, did not result in its intentional use and so JTI pulled out. In the meantime, Monsees completely redesigned the device to ensure tobacco smokers were the target audience. Little did they know, they were working on the very product that would be their biggest success and inevitable downfall: Juul.

VM48 l 69

WHERE’S MY JUUL Following a dry patch, the summer of 2016 brought an unexpected surge in Juul sales, with the device now accounting for more than 75 percent of the e-cigarette market. In early 2017, Juuls constantly sold out, leading to the board of investors to employ Kevin Burns as the new CEO, with hopes of growing and strengthening their supply chain. Under Burn’s reign, it didn’t take long for the company to become a ‘decacorn’ – a business that reaches a value of $10 billion – making it the first e-cigarette company in history to do so. With no end in sight for its ever-growing popularity on social media, the USB-shaped device was beginning to appear in the hands of celebrities and influences, including Bella Hadid and Dave Chappelle. However, on the inside, Juul’s marketing team limited their use of bright colours and young people appearing in campaigns to hopefully deter what was quickly becoming an epidemic of youth vaping.

Doctor Robert Jackler, tobacco marketing expert at Stanford University said: “Juul uniquely is much more addictive than even cigarettes…” Due to the concerning rise in underage vaping, Juul’s response was to ‘bandaid’ the issue by holding awareness talks in schools to educate those now affected by their product. Tobacco giant PMI had also launched a similar campaign back in 2001 but the program had adverse effects, presenting as a ploy to increase sales no matter the cost. In a sudden twist of events, and because of its undeniable success – although controversial – Altria agrees to buy 35 percent of Juul, which causes a major rift within the company. For those working to end the use and sale of combustible cigarettes, teaming up with a company like Altria was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

OVERNIGHT BILLIONAIRES Further adding insult to injury in partnering with a global tobacco giant, Juul’s profits were published online…revealing employees had become a millionaires overnight all thanks to the $12.8 billion investment. In return for now owning over a quarter of Juul, Altria did make some surprising promises – including publishing Juul marketing on all Marlboro packets and agreeing to become combustible-free by 2050. Despite this, the newcomer still left a bad taste in the mouths of not only people but whole states, and thus began the war of Juul vs America. San Francisco was one of the first states to fight back by banning the sale of all e-cigarette products that have not gone through the FDA’s PMTA process, which meant Juul was immediately outlawed. The next to speak up was Congress, which obtained over 55,000 documents from Juul, which only shows the overwhelmingly negative impact the company had had on the public. With no end in sight, Juul takes another blow from the 2019 EVALI outbreak, which in the beginning blamed the device for the numerous cases across the country.

70 l VM48

Despite being investigated and cleared by the CDC, Juul suffered irreversible damage from the media, the public, and primarily themselves. With the end now in sight, a mass-domino effect ensues. Kevin Burns is replaced by Altriaappointed K.C Crosthwaite – quickly followed by the departure of thousands of employees. James Monsees and Adam Bowen – the founders of Juul – also jump ship, with the company now completely puppetmastered by big tobacco. In the last five minutes, Doctor David Abrams, Professor of Social and Behavioural Sciences at NYU says: “We can’t completely help 55 million adults, and completely ignore protecting our teens. “But it’s not either/or, it’s both/and. So, we have to keep our eye on the prize…” Interestingly, for the final scene, the producers decide to cut to a now 24-year-old woman who was one of the few in intensive care due to the EVALI crisis. She takes one large pull on her vaping device and says: “One of the reasons why I haven’t really tried to quit [vaping] yet is because I haven’t wanted to.”

Juul’s role in the fear and judgement the vaping industry deals with today is undeniable. From health and youth concerns to marketing and regulatory issues, Juul is somewhat directly responsible for the tragic and misinformed views held by the media and the public. Although, regardless of the countless steps the industry has had to endure to pick its self-up again, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

We, as a community, cannot be discouraged by the actions of one company. All that can be done now, is to continue the path of educating and helping those seeking a healthier, tobacco-free life. Learn from the mistakes made, and pursue a better, more responsible quest to change the world.

We all have to start somewhere, and with the e-waste crisis ever-looming, recycling our vapes responsibly is one of many ways we can start securing a clean and green future. Words: Grace Lynk

VM48 l 73

ELECTRONIC WASTE IS OUR FASTEST GROWING WASTE STREAM. IT’S ALSO BY FAR OUR MOST VALUABLE WASTE STREAM WHEN IT COMES TO HOUSEHOLD WASTE. In the rapidly evolving landscape of electronic waste, attention has traditionally been drawn to the persistent challenge of disposing vapes in an ethical and sustainable way. However, despite vapes being a real problem in this evolving e-waste crisis, statistics have been issued revealing e-cigarettes as less of a significant contributor in comparison to hordes of ubiquitous gadgets piling up. After compiling statistics from the Yale Environmental Review and the UN, we have created some visual pointers to depict the catastrophic damage impacting the planet by discarded e-waste on an annual basis. 74 l VM48

In 2019, the e-waste output of the entire world weighed the equivalent of 350 cruise ships and is estimated to increase to 375 as of this year. If you placed in a line a year’s worth of e-waste from one individual, it would be 77 miles long, meaning it would take over an hour to drive across a highway of such magnitude. Norway is currently in the lead as the country with the most e-waste per capita, with their heavy influence of electric cars accounting to 26kg worth of waste being produced. For every million laptops recycled, the energy equivalent of electricity consumed by more than 3500 homes per year could be saved. Children’s electronic toys contribute 77 times more to the world’s invisible e-waste than vapes, accounting for 42 million kilograms a year. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Forum collaborated with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research to quantify some of this data in the hopes of pinpointing just how much e-waste is disposed incorrectly. Overall, they discovered that nine billion kilograms of ‘invisible’ e-waste is thrown away every year, the cost of which would equal a whopping ten billion according to analysis. Oliver Franklin-Wallis, author of Wasteland, a book on waste disposal said: “Electronic waste is our fastest growing waste stream. It’s also by far our most valuable waste stream when it comes to household waste.” This article is in no way a means to shift blame, because anyone in the vaping industry is well-aware that waste from e-cigarettes is a contributing factor. As society witnesses an exponential rise in the popularity of vaping devices, the environmental repercussions of their electronic components is only accentuating the need for change, and fast. E-waste is a serious issue, and if one of the ways you can contribute to the greater good is by recycling your vape device correctly, it’s as good a place to start as any.

HERE ARE SOME WAYS YOU CAN MAKE A SMALL DIFFERENCE TO A BIG PROBLEM. Find a vape disposal bin near you. Return them to an electrical retailer. Sign up for a collection recycle scheme and have your devices transported to the proper facilities for you. Check vape stores near you for recycling bins and their own environmental schemes. We have to change the way we view sustainability across the world, and although it may seem like a losing battle sometimes, if disposing our vapes correctly is the place to start, then so be it. AMPLIFYING ADVOCATE VOICES

Charles A. Gardner He’s not giving up anytime soon…Charles A. Gardner continues to push the boundaries for the right to have the choice to vape.

Words: Emily Malia

B

rooklyn, New York couldn’t feel further away from the Vapouround office and yet bringing it much closer to home, combining the two worlds, is renowned vaping advocate Charles A. Gardner.

He is known across the community for his sheer determination to help the harm reduction movement, sharing vital information to fight against the false narrative that surrounds the quitting tool. With 25 years of experience in global health, working in government, diplomacy, philanthropy and his role as a neurobiologist, Gardner sure has built up a roster. But what better place to start than the very beginning of his own vaping journey? Smoking started out as casual, a ‘once in a while’ thing for Charles in his 20’s, but soon developed into an everyday, life-altering habit and by the time he was 31 he was smoking nearly a pack a day. He decided to give ‘one of these e-cigarettes things’ a try and remained a dual user for some time, eventually quitting smoking entirely

76 l VM48

through vaping and he hasn’t looked back since. Decades of his career have been fuelled by his passion for public health and policy, with his work focused on HIV, tuberculosis, malaria, dengue, rabies, and a range of child health issues prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. He said: “But I always looked at the field of tobacco control as a waste of time. I thought, ‘you'll never get people to stop smoking’. Now, I know the opposite. “Now, I see a solution to reduce smoking-related death and disease and I feel that whatever I can contribute to harm reduction, is likely to save more lives than all the previous 25 years of work in health.” With a passion for change, Charles Gardner worked as a Program Officer in the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World for three years, covering research projects as well as the foundation's tentative steps to invest in public education. Later on, he shifted to lead the non-profit International Network of Nicotine Consumer Organizations (INNCO) and now, works as a private consultant. Along his fight for the right to vape, he has made many friends along the way with outstanding advocates in the field as well as researchers and tobacco control experts, which he says ‘is the most rewarding thing’ about his work. Reflecting on his time in vaping advocacy Charles said: “There is no standout moment for me, but I can say this with confidence: We are making progress, though it's usually two steps forward and one step back.” “In mainstream tobacco control, over the past 5 years, I know many people on the wrong side of the fence have shifted now to sit on the fence. And many who were on the fence have shifted toward harm reduction. “Many who already stood on the harm reduction side have become more vocal and strident in reaction to all the misinformation that's out there. This is progress.” Many of the advocates interactions are online, with his following of over 10,000 people, he sadly never learns the outcome of the advice he offers but it’s evident that it does not go a miss.

sources like the CDC or the FDA reaches a large audience, and this spread of information has certainly helped to shift the mindset of many smokers and anti-vapers alike. At the core of his advocacy, he believes that everyone should have the right to make the choice to use harm reduction tools and he intends on giving them the best advice along the way. The future of the vaping industry is unknown and times are turbulent for smokers as the constant spread of scaremongering misinformation is rife… but Gardner still has hope. He said: “I know it's often hard to believe, but we will win this battle. What we need to see first is a shift in the currently biased reporting on our field. “There should be a respectful evidence-based debate among the experts. But so far, the media only gives oxygen to one side of that debate, and the debate itself is anything but respectful. “I see some hints of progress on this public discourse, but we still have a long way to go. In just a few years, the evidence for product substitution will only get stronger. “Eventually, it will be so glaringly obvious that it will be impossible to ignore. Then, I think the tide of public opinion will start to shift.” Charles Gardner’s voice on behalf of the vaping community, needs to be heard and with advocates like this speaking up, we can only hope that policies will change for the better. But, in his own words…‘we still have a long road ahead’.

I KNOW IT’S OFTEN HARD TO BELIEVE, BUT WE WILL WIN THIS BATTLE. WHAT WE NEED TO SEE FIRST IS A SHIFT IN THE CURRENTLY BIASED REPORTING ON OUR FIELD.

RAMCEZZ

Here we highlight some of the stars of Instagram who are using the social media platform to create original art with a vaping theme. Interview by: Hannah Rhodes Name: Ramcezz Location: México City Instagram page: @ramcezz VM48 l 87

How long have you been vaping for and how did you start out? “I have been vaping for about eight years or so now. “I was beginning to feel suffocated when climbing stairs or running and I was in general poor physical condition due to smoking. “After I found information on vaping, it seemed like a good option for me to aid in quitting smoking.

“I began to look for where to buy everything necessary for vaping and later a friend of mine who also vapes taught me how to effectively use the devices.”

How did your coil building journey begin? “I started vaping with equipment that uses disposable coils and later I got to know different equipment. “Once I became more confident in making coil art, I began experimenting with

different wires, such as A1, N80 and SS316 to achieve varying results. “A lot of my learning came from friends who also built coils as well as other artists on Instagram. “That’s when I started to get wire to begin experimenting making coils and see how much I could do. “Now after several years of making coil art, it has become much easier to integrate different techniques and styles into my work. “Despite my passion for this art, finding time 88 l VM48

to be able to practice and experiment has become quite limited and so I don’t make as much as I would like to.”

Have you encountered any challenges during your time creating coil art? “The actual process of coil art hasn’t been much of an issue for myself as I really enjoy the challenge of the practice. “However, outside factors like work as well as other hobbies and activities have certainly hindered my ability to focus as much of my

time and efforts into the art as I would have wanted. “Coil art requires a lot of time and patience, meaning your mind must be in the right place to be able to truly create something special.”

Is there anything in particular that motivates or inspires your work? “When I first started out, I was really intrigued by the way in which I could manipulate the wires to achieve a certain look and purpose. “This in turn inspired me to try many

different techniques with the aim to create something new every time. “I do currently suffer with insomnia, but I now utilise those times of restlessness to focus on being productive and challenge myself through my craft. “Additionally, other artists’ motivate my work a lot as it allows me to explore styles from across the world that then influences my own style.”

Do you only build coils for yourself as a hobby or for others too? “In the beginning, I only made coils for

myself and for my Instagram account, as it gave me the space to try a variety of styles in my own time.

“After a few years, with more in depth learning and experience with multiple types of wires and equipment, I decided to begin making coils for fellow vapers as well.”

Are you currently working on any new coil projects? “I’m currently working on bits and pieces for other vapers and their own personal collection. “I also do still make coil art for my social media page too, however due to not having as much free time as I used to, I don’t build as much for myself.” VM48 l 89

THE VAPER EXPO UK BIRMINGHAM 27-29 OCTOBER Words: Oliver Smith

For a second time this year, the vaping industry convened at the famous NEC Birmingham for the latest Vaper Expo UK chapter. In all, over the three days there were more than 300 vape brands as well as over 20,000 visitors in attendance. As an off icial media partner, Vapouround had a booth at the expo and it was great to see so many familiar faces come up to the team and say hello. It was great to see so many of you there, along with a few new buyers, wholesalers and manufacturers that have now got an experience for the diversity of our e-cigarette industry. A huge variety of vaping devices were showcased, including many new open and closed pod systems…products that have been making quite a resurgence to the market. There were also many companies f rom the wider harm-reduction community, including those exhibiting many of their innovative designs that will hopefully accelerate the industry further. Between all the business deals and unveiled products there were also a

number of informative e-cigarette seminars held throughout the show. These really delved into the current state of the industry with a variety of issues that surround it, as well as the steps that need to be taken to develop it for the better. So, we hope you all had a wonderful time at the event and we look forward meeting back up with you at the start of May 2024 for the next offering f rom the team at The Vaper Expo UK.

VAPITALYPRO ROME 4-5 NOVEMBER Words: Kirk Martin

Set in the most historical city in the world, Vapitaly’s second expo of the year is a short Uber drive away f rom the breath-taking colosseum of Rome. This show was the slightly smaller version of Verona but was still very much alive and busy. Of course, you have KIWI and RIBILIO and plenty of Italian companies there. As well as further af ield companies like Don Christo, Daddy’s Vapour and Gold Bars to name a few. After chatting to all the exhibitors, it seemed that everybody agreed that this was a very successful show. Not the biggest, but rich in business potential and great for networking. The Italian market has always been one of the big ones and it’s clear to see it’s not going anywhere. Even with the intermittent showers and thunder, such sights as the Vatican and pantheon are still majestic to behold. What a fantastic location for another great show.

UKVIA INDUSTRY RECOGNITION AWARDS 2023 LONDON 10 NOVEMBER Words: Oliver Smith

Following another successful UKVIA forum at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre, I was told by the organisers to be prepared for an unforgettable night of awards. We were asked to go off into the hustle and bustle of Westminster for an hour and half whilst the UKVIA team organised for the evening, so we did what anyone would do and found a pub. After returning to the QEII Centre, we were greeted by a warm reception, with plenty of drinks to go around, accompanied beautifully with a live jazz band. They def initely pleased the buzzing crowd, playing an array of classics to modern hits for everyone to enjoy. Floating to the music was a magician, going f rom group-to-group, wowing with his sleight of hand card tricks. We were then asked to head up and f ind our seats in the maze of tables that made up the decked-out dining hall. On our table, we were sat with some very interesting individuals f rom various

106 l VM48

backgrounds and companies, with a lot of good conversation flying around throughout the night. The food at the awards was lovely, with our starter consisting of a ham hock terrine topped off with celeriac chutney, turnips and ciabatta. The main of venison, parsnip mousse and roast vegetables along with a dessert featuring apple tart tipped off a wonderful meal. However, it was not only just great food on the menu…there was also a host of awards up for grabs on the evening. For me the standout winners of the night were FEELM 2.0 winning ‘Best Innovation in the Vaping Industry’, an award that was voted for by delegates during the forum. Not to mention ANDS who won the ‘International Vaping’ award, which I think is fully deserved for their triumphant rise. I hope to return next year for another fantastic night of laughs and great entertainment at the UKVIA Industry Recognition Awards in 2024.

Our f irst adventure following the newly wrapped ‘Project Vapouround’ bus took us to Stoke City Centre. Despite the pouring raining, locals f rom across the city made their way over to learn about our mission and the power vaping can have as a harm reduction tool.

It was a windy, autumn morning as Project Vapouround rolled into the busy market square in Loughborough town centre.

Two lovely ladies came up and approached the team looking for guidance on quitting smoking after having smoked for a combined sixty years.

As we set up for the day, passers-by who were eager to see what Project Vapouround was all about, started to queue up outside.

One said she smoked more than she could count in a day, whereas the other had already begun her quitting journey and was now down to only two.

Individuals had the chance to win a Wenax Q or Sonder Q pod kit over in Geekvape’s area, whilst others were learning about the difference between heat-not-burn products and smoking at the Neafs counter.

After providing the pair with information to achieve their smoke-f ree life, they expressed an interest in trying vaping as a means to quit. With newly acquired disposables in hand, they went on their merry way feeling conf ident in beating the habit. Another success story for Project Vapouround, I can’t want to hop on board for the next stop on our mission!

During the day, we introduced smokers to various products and flavours f rom Gold Bars, Geekvape, Elfliq and Neafs, which they were able to test out or take home to try later when a cigarette craving hit. All in all, it was a successful day and it was great to see so many take part in the activities we had on board the bus.

The Vaper Expo ran f rom 27-29 October, and we were delighted to return with Project Vapouround. We received numerous compliments f rom people who were thrilled to see the bus there - one even mentioned that the event wouldn’t be the same without it! Throughout the weekend, we had a constant flow of people coming on board the bus, eager to explore new products, and brands and take part in our activities. We launched a new game for Geekvape where participants had to guess the flavours to win prizes, which proved very popular among attendees. It was a great weekend and are looking forward to doing it again in May! 114 l VM48
