CHAIN OF EVOLUTION

Year: 3

Semester: 1

Target Location: Keppel & Tanjong Pagar Terminal

Type of Project: PUB Living With The Rising Seas Competition

The impact of climate change is experienced throughout the whole and Singapore being an Island nation with low lying levels, the threat of rising sea level is very real and imminent. Hence it is important to plan ahead and reimagine our coastline, so we can keep our shores and our people safe.

More than just looking for a solution, this project seeks to challenge the students to think out of the box to make living with the rising sea levels an opportunity for something sustainable, liveable and enjoyable.

BIOMIMICRY

Year: 1

Semester: 2

Type of Project: Semester Individual Project

Research an organism and extract certain shapes or patterns from it to form a system Propose a structure that retains elements from the original organism and provide a purpose / use for it

Research Subject: (Mushroom)

Observation & Thoughts

- Structure is comprised of mainly interlocking branches

- Other than its interconnected branches, there are no other distinct patterns

- Number of connected joints seems to be increasing or decreasing depending on direction

- Contains deep “ holes “ in between branches

Geometry Studies :

Analysis

- Since the branches in the yellow circle seems to be converging/diverging at a central point, I decided to base my module on that concept.

- Module is made through observing the sharp “holes / bumps“ and zigzagging pattern contained within the blue circle.

- I noticed the diamond-looking like shape in the red circle and decided to further develop it into the first design on the left. After playing around with it, I morphed it into a unique pattern on the right.

Module 1

Primary Materials: (For the main model)

VanguardSheet

Translucent MetalSheet

Pros:

- Able to bend and fold into the module I am building.

- Comes with a variety of texture/thickness.

Cons:

- When folding it causes a “noticeable” crease around the area folded.

Secondary Materials: (For detailing)

Pros:

- Can be placed on top of the main model material to add a “shine”.

- Creates a very nice translucent effect.

Cons:

- Hard to cut it in small pieces and it is a bit sharp on the edges.

Pros:

- Can be placed on the seats I am planning to incorporate into my model to create this cloudy/wool-like appearance.

Cons:

- Overusing it might divert too much attention away from the main model and instead onto the seats.

Felt

REST

Having the design built in a very irregular and sheltered manner, the structure could be used as a shade with people standing under the small pockets of shelter provided

PLAY

It is a structure that I hope would pique the interests of passersby, to interact with the structure by either walking up to take a look or taking a photo of it.
