Welcome to the 46th Annual Vancouver International Children’s Festival

On behalf of the Vancouver International Children’s Festival team, l am proud to present our stunning program comprised of six days of outstanding in-person performances and three weeks of online performances. Our goal is to reach as many children, families and educators as possible by presenting shows both in-person and online.

In 2023, four international artists, three national artists and eleven local artists including the commission, One of a Kind and the world premiere of Division Infinity, will grace our stages. This year we are excited to bring you works from Australia such as the extraordinary acrobatic show A Simple Space by world-renowned Gravity & Other Myths, ZOOOM by Patch Theatre, the outstanding company who create work specifically for children and Child Nation by the talented independent artist Jessica Wilson. In addition to our Australian focus, we have the pleasure of presenting Compagnie Zolobe from Madagascar for their inaugural Canadian tour of Sakasaka. Our diverse performers will share their extraordinary stories through music, dance, theatre, storytelling, circus arts, film and puppetry.

In addition to the shows, join us for interactive arts activities and workshops that invite you to be creatively playful with each other and the amazing artists that join us.

Please come out and experience a magical day at the Festival!

A Message from the Mayor

On behalf of my colleagues on City Council and the citizens of Vancouver, I want to extend my warmest greetings to everyone attending the 2023 Vancouver International Children’s Festival.

The Vancouver International Children’s Festival began as a theatre festival for young audiences presenting international performances. The Festival is multidisciplinary presenting theatre, music, dance, circus, puppetry and storytelling and over the years has been an inspirational to major cities throughout Canada and abroad. This year, the festival programming is culturally diverse and representative of regional, national and international artists offered through a mix of in-person and online performances.

I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the organizers, volunteers and the artists. Best wishes from the entire City Council for a wonderful and successful event.

Sincerely,

A Simple Space

Gravity & Other Myths (Australia)

Circus • Granville Island Stage • 55 min • Ages 7 and up

You’ll flip, fly and fall in love with this exciting, jaw-dropping show where seven acrobats push their physical limits to the extreme. A breathtaking display of fear-less acrobatics and death-defying feats, A Simple Space will blow you away. Simple only in its setting, the show’s stripped-down and bare staging let the strength, skill and creativity of Gravity & Other Myths’ acrobats take centre stage. The stakes get higher as each tries to outdo the other with greater and more daring stunts and off-the-wall tricks. You can feel the heat from their bodies, hear every breath as the performers hurl one another through the air and build teetering human towers. Wow feels like an understatement. Run, don’t walk to this show!

ZOOOM

Patch Theatre (Australia)

Theatre • Waterfront Theatre • 45 min • Ages 3–10

Combining state-of-the-art technology with a touch of whimsy, ZOOOM is an enchanting story about a pixel of light that falls into a child’s room. Children become part of the show using a light they are given as they enter. With the audience’s help, the girl embarks on an adventure with light and discovers that the dark is a magical place. Inspired by the classic children’s book Harold and The Purple Crayon, ZOOOM uses original music, lasers and projections to take the audience on an immersive shared journey. Kids (and parents) will love this playful, interactive show where light is used to solve problems and build worlds.

Add a splash of joy to your day with Madagascar’s Compagnie Zolobe! Using only a mop, a bench, and buckets, three clowns will have you laughing out loud as they continually try to drink a cup of water.
