For the widely travelled native of Delta State, working on this movie as male lead actor, was his first trip to Nigeria in 30 years.

“I Work Hard On My Craft” lthough she is the darling of Nollywood fans, getting an interview with Genevieve Nnaji, was like getting the proverbial biblical camel to pass through the eye of a needle. It seemed she lives guarded and shielded from prying eyes especially curious reporters like moi.

The award-winning actress, now turned producer, recently released her first production feature, “Road to Yesterday”.

In this encounter, the beautiful mother of one, talks about her new film, her fashion sense and the future.

You starred in an epic love film that was the closing Night film at this year’s Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF). What was it like working on that project?

It was exciting, challenging and nerve-wrecking because, I had been away for a while, and didn’t know how rusty I was before I got back on set, not just as an actress, but as a producer for the movie, “Road to Yesterday”.

In what ways would you say that Ishaya Bako is different from other directors that you have worked with?

I haven’t worked with many new generation directors, so it won’t be a fair judgement, but Ishaya just gets me.

You recently veered into producing, is this always the next challenge for successful actors and actresses like yourself?

Quite frankly, it seems to be in Nollywood. It’s not a necessary transition but in Nollywood, it seems to be because there isn’t a wide pool of producers and directors to fill the void in Nigerian Cinema.

When it comes to acting, you’ve been quiet for a while. Was it on purpose?

It hasn’t been exactly on purpose, I’ve only turned down scripts because I believe an industry will only grow and be as good as it can be based on products put out there. And so, I feel a sense of duty to creating artistry.

•Nnaji personality. I like my personality shown on what I wear. Fashion can’t dictate that for me.

The Nigeria Movie Industry has witnessed such an influx of young actors into the industry. What do you do to stay relevant?

I really don’t consciously do anything for relevance. I work hard on my craft, and I am undeniably blessed with a strong following of fans that appreciate it.

Besides your label, what other labels do you enjoy wearing?

I wear whatever is beautiful and well made; from Hermes, H&M, Tiffany Amber to Lanvin.

You launched a fashion line called St. Genevieve at some point in your career, how is the brand doing?

St. Genevieve’s first collection did amazing, I really am grateful and blessed for the love people show me, and grateful to God for this gift. I am already looking forward to the next collection.

What was growing up like?

I think normal, or so it seemed at the time: large family – eight children, mummy and daddy. I did get my occasional spanking, as I was quite the tyrant.

What is the style focus of your label?

Easy. Comfortable. Classic.

As a celebrity, what style do you subscribe to?

Comfortable, feminine and classic with a bit of edge.

You came under fire with your fans for wearing a white dress with plunging neckline to the 2013 AMVCA. How did you deal with that?

(Laughs) It’s natural for people to react to something they are not used to.

Would you do anything for fashion or do you think there should be a limit?

I focus on style; style is a depiction of one’s true

What fashion item would you splurge on?

A Handbag.

Fame hasn’t changed me as a person, instead, has changed how others look at me.

Has fame changed the way you used to live? If yes, how?

Fame hasn’t changed me as a person, instead, has changed how others look at me. It has made me more aware and guarded, naturally so. Now, I am more cautious about whom I surround myself with,

Who and what inspires you?

Growing up, I was greatly influenced by my older sister but now, strong, hardworking, unapologetically, successful women inspire me; women like Gloria, the popular Lagos Traffic warden in Ikoyi, Beyonce, Shonda Rhimes and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to name a few.

What price are you paying for fame?

There are pros and cons, so I believe and I think the pros outweigh the cons. I won’t say I’m paying the price really. I am who I am.

What regrets do you have about being an actress?

None.

What aspect of your work do you hate?

Compromising!

What do you look forward to now?

Doing a lot more great work within the components of T.E.N (The Entertainment Network) and beyond.

If you were to have an alternative career path, what other profession would you be in?

Growing up, I wanted to study Law. As a child, it was between fashion and writing.

What challenging role do you look forward to playing?

I’d love to play a Super Hero!

The native of Delta State of the Urhobo extraction, has worked with renowned award-winning actors and directors including the late Dennis Hopper, Raoul Peck, R Benjamin Bratt, Christopher Lambert, Donnie Yen, Guy Ritchie, Cedric the Entertainer and academyaward nominee, Debra Winger, to name a few. He is widely traveled and thoroughly enjoys and believes in “giving back” to the world’s community through numerous local and global humanitarian organizations.

Can you share your experience as a cast in the movie, “Road to Yesterday”?

My Experience, as a cast in the movie “Road to Yesterday” is something I will forever treasure, thanks to the very young, bright, and talented director, Ishaya Bako and one of the finest and most powerful screen goddess of this century, Genevieve Nnaji, whom I believe is just getting started in making the transition to producing.

Earlier this year, I got a call from Ishaya, he mentioned Genevieve’s interest in me to play the lead male role in “Road to Yesterday”. I landed in Nigeria a few days later, my first visit in 30 years. You could call it a special homecoming. I was received with open arms by The Entertainment Network (T.E.N), the production company that trusted me with this special role. I will admit that I felt a huge sense of responsibility – this being Genevieve’s first movie in two years, T.E.N’s production debut, Ishaya’s directorial feature film debut, etc.

It was also significant because, this was my first official Nollywood movie and a major introduction to a whole new world that I have never ventured into before.

Based on your experience of the British film industry as well as the Hollywood film industry, what are the suggestions for Nollywood?

Well, I have been in the game for a very long time and this is my first Nollywood film. Personally, I have learnt a lot from the process – it was educational from the beginning to the end of filming. I don’t feel the need to give the industry any suggestions, as a matter of fact, other Film industries could learn a thing or two from Nollywood. Nigeria is leading the rest of Africa in the film and music sector. Our diverse cultures, have a stronghold and influence over the stories we tell which makes Nollywood very unique, and different from the rest of the other film franchises around the world including, Bollywood and Hollywood.

If you were to have an alternative career path, what other profession would you be in?

I have always loved acting as far back as I can remember and as I grow in this profession, the passion grows relentlessly. If I were to have an alternative career path, I would love to be a diplomat and/or work for the United Nations, simply because of the incredible people around the world I have met and dialogued with through my endless travels.

Who and what inspires you?

The late Nelson Mandela will forever inspire me, the fact that he was locked up for 27 years for what he believed and stood for, the fact that he held his

ground and core values till the very end of his life.

That ‘never give up’ spirit, inspires me and reminds me that we can accomplish and achieve whatever it is we put our minds to.

What challenging role do you look forward to playing?

Africa has so many great stories that haven’t been told and I have a list of roles which I keep close to my heart. The next challenging role the audience can expect from me, is a major biopic out of Nigeria. I’m currently in talks with some incredible writers.

Knocked Knees?

What They Are & How To Correct Them - part 1

Knocked knees is an abnormal curvature of the lower legs, resulting in a large gap between the feet and ankles when the knees are touching. The medical name for knock knee is genu valgum.

Individuals with severe valgus deformities are typically unable to touch their feet together while simultaneously

WHAT CAUSES KNOCKED KNEES AKA K- LEGS? Weak abductor muscles, which are found on the outsides of the hips and thighs. The muscles involved with abduction are the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, gluteus minimus and tensor fascia lata.

Think of the word abduction, to mean “to take away.”

Therefore, the leg or hip abduction exercises lift your leg out to the side and away from your mid-line. To correct knocked knees, you need to do abductorstrengthening exercises such as:

1. Side Step-ups Side step-ups require the use of a weight bench or chair. Stand with your right side facing the bench and your arms in front of your chest. In a steady motion, place your right foot on the bench, press down and lift your body in the air. When your right leg is straight, hold for a second, lower yourself and repeat. After doing 10 to 12 reps, switch sides. As with side lunges, hold a medicine ball for added resistance.

2. Lying Abduction Lying abduction is done from a side-lying position. Lie on your right side with your legs stacked. In a steady motion, lift your left leg at a 45-degree angle to the floor and hold for a second. Slowly lower your leg, repeat for 10 to 12 reps and switch sides.

For added resistance, hold a dumbbell against your thigh when you raise your leg.

3. Wall Abductor Squeeze Wall abductor squeezes require an exercise ball.

Stand with your left side facing the wall, and hold the ball against the wall at stomach height. After lifting your left leg, bend your knee and get your thigh parallel to the floor. Steadily press into the ball with your outer left leg and hold for a full second. Slowly, release the pressure and repeat. After doing 10 to 12 reps, switch sides.

I am not too fair, neither am I dark. Can you please advise me on a good body cream for an all over even skin tone? I used one cream that adversely affected my skin, and left a dark patch under my left eye. Kindly recommend a cream to remove the dark patch under my eye too. I look forward to your reply. 4. Standing Abductor Stretch The standing abductor stretch is an easy way to target your abductors. Stand up tall, cross your right foot behind your left and bend from the waist toward the foot that’s behind the other. This targets the hip abductors on the left side of your body. Holding on to a chair or placing your hands against a wall lets you easily maintain your balance. Twenty seconds is the right amount of time to hold this stretch, according to The Stretching Institute. The muscles on the right side of your body stretch the same way with your feet in the opposite positions.

5. Side Lunges Side lunges work your abductors, hamstrings and quadriceps. Stand with your feet hip-width apart and your arms in front of your chest. In a steady motion, take a big step laterally to your left. When your foot comes to the ground, bend your knee, and push your butt backward. When you feel a strong contraction on your hip and other thigh, stand up, bring your feet back together and repeat to the other side. Continue to go back and forth for 10 to 12 repetitions. If you want more resistance, hold a medicine ball in front of your chest.

Shea butter and almond oils are always enriching and great for smoothing out blemishes or uneven skin tone. I like the Palmers range; however any good pharmacy or supermarket would sell creams with almond oil and/or shea butter.

Regarding your face, I always say it’s best to use a different moisturizer for your face. One specifically for the face and not the whole body, as the body moisturizer may be too heavy for your face.

Any eye cream containing vitamins C and E are essential anti-aging ingredients. While vitamin C aids in collagen production and skin elasticity, vitamin E soothes and protects.

For the dark patch, try applying a little concentrated shea butter (Ori) at night only after washing your face.

You could also try a homemade face mask containing mashed avocado, lemon, a little olive oil and some cumin. Mix all together and spread evenly on a freshly washed face and wait for 30minites before washing off.

Cocktails Named After Famous People

Cocktails are delicious drinks that can be taken at any time of the day without feeling guilty about drinking too early in the day.

Their refreshing nature, makes them a go-to drink for people of all classes and ages. Over the years, several individuals have been honoured by having their name attached to cocktail drinks and alcoholic drinks as well. Some of them actually invented the cocktails as a means of brand promotion. Here are some of the earliest created cocktails named after famous people.

The Joan Collins Joan Collins is best known for her role in The Dynasty. The Joan Collins cocktail is a concoction of vodka, grapefruit juice, sugar, and club soda, all served in a Collins glass, of course.

The Eliot Spritzer Former New York Governor, Eliot Spitzer, may have left the governor’s mansion in humiliation. but at least, he got a cocktail named after him. The cocktail comprises of Pinot Grigio, Chambord, a Serrano pepper, soda water, and a twist of lime.

The David Bowie is made with five parts chocolate liqueur and one part bourbon, stirred together on the rocks and garnished with an orange wedge.

His great taste in fashion, inspired this mouth watering chilled glass of pure deliciousness made with a combination of bourbon, Prunella (a plum-flavored liqueur), orange juice, and sugar shaken with ice and served in a cocktail glass.

Sugar free cakes

As we approach the season of sweet tooth, one must still be conscious of sugary foods and snacks.

Fortunately, there are sugar alternatives and I’m not talking about artificial sweeteners. There are natural sugar substitutes which are both healthy and very sweet as well. Some sugar substitutes include; date, sugar cane extract, raisins etc. Adding natural fruits also help sweeten cakes, one can use strawberries and grapes as sweeteners as well. Here are a few delicious and healthy cake recipes for this mouth watery season.

SUGAR-FREE BLUEBERRY CRUNCH CAKE Ingredients • 175g unsalted butter, melted and cooled • 250ml milk • 3 eggs • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 40 pieces dry date • 2 teaspoons baking powder • 2 packs fresh raisins • 375g plain flour • 250g fresh or frozen blueberries • 95g plain flour • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 115g unsalted butter, softened Method: Remove seed from date and grind in dry blender. In a small bowl, add 95g of flour, baking powder and cinnamon. Stir in the softened butter with a fork until the mixture is crumbly.

Stir together the melted butter, milk, eggs and vanilla together.

Mix wet and dry ingredients together. Preheat oven to 180 C. Grease and flour baking tin and pour in condiments, fold in blueberries and bake for 35/40 minutes, check cake by inserting a cocktail stick into the centre of the cake until it comes out clean. Serve warm.

LOW FAT BANANA WALNUT CAKE Ingredients • 2 eggs • 150g dry date • 2 very ripe bananas, mashed • 4 tablespoons apple sauce or purée • 5 tablespoons skimmed milk • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract • 225g (8 oz) plain flour • 1 dessertspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 30g (1 oz) chopped walnuts Method: In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar until light and fluffy for about 5 minutes. Beat in mashed bananas, apple sauce, milk, olive oil and vanilla. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt. Stir flour mixture into banana mixture, whisk until well blended. Preheat oven to 160 C. Fold in smashed walnuts (depending on preference).

Line a baking tin with olive oil, and lightly dust with flour. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for about 1 hour, until golden and a cocktail stick inserted into centre of the cake comes out clean. Turn cake out onto a wire rack and let cool.

Climate Change Unveiled As The Theme Of Calabar Carnival 2015 By - Oscar Ochiogu

The Carnival Calabar often referred to as Africa’s biggest street party has become for Cross River State and its people, an ideal tool for tourism and ultimately Socio-economic development Ten years after it was introduced into the state by the former governor, Donald Duke, the private sector has now taken its full ownership for onward sustainability. According to the Executive Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade while unveiling the Theme for 2015; ‘Climate Change’ said, “ownership by the private sector would open more window of opportunities for all sectors of the economy”.

Senator Florence Ita-Giwa while commenting on the programmes lined up for this year’s event said” the Carnival Calabar is always a time to look forward to for originality and content which is usually displayed by five competitive bands; The Bayside Band (Blue), Passion Four (Green), Seagulls Band (Red), Master Blasta (Orange) and Freedom Band (Yellow).

The bands are expected to work hard to interpret the theme of the carnival through their dance, float, and costumes as it affects the people of the state.

Organisers of Dare2Dream (D2D) launched its second season recently in Lagos. The unveiling which held at the Chocolat Royal-Metisse Restaurant.was attended by the D2D trainers; Maje Ayida (health and lifestyle trainer), Ono Bello (PR Trainer), Shaydee (singing Trainer) and Bola Fawehinmi (model Trainer) who all disclosed their roles and participation for the forthcoming reality show.

Speaking at the event, Uchenna Mojekwu Head of Communications FCMB, revealed that the company is truly excited about Dare2Dream Season2, as well as the amazing personalities coming to share their stories and giving master classes. “We believe true success is seeing the greatness of what people make from the seeds you have sown in them.

As such, we decided to give these youths a platform on which to grow and impact others” he said.

Dare2Dream also welcomed on board as media partners EbonyLifeTV and AIT, with Mo Abudu giving a special Masterclass to the participants.
