A few short years ago, Kessingsheen hair products were a household brand. They produced everything that had to do with hair: relaxers, shampoo, conditioner, hair treatments, etc. The products gained massive popularity as adverts showed lovely, young girls claiming that they owed the secret of their beautiful, long hair to Kessingsheen. In no time, this magic carpet landed in other parts of Africa such as Ghana, Mali, Benin Republic, etc. It looked like the brand was unstoppable. Then, suddenly, the magic fizzled out. And so did the product. I had often wondered what happened to the Kesssingsheen line of products. Recently, I met Kessington Momoh and his beautiful wife, Cynthia, the couple who owned the brand when they rededicated their love for each other after 23 years of marriage. It was a lavish wedding celebration. On the surface, I thought, after six children, why hold such a lavish party for another round of vows? I quickly banished the thought when I heard their story. It’s a classic Nollywood script of love, suffering and living happily ever after! I call it “Love so true”. True, unselfish love is rare in these parts. Whenever we find it, we should celebrate it. Read and enjoy. Have a great week!

Kess Momoh, a prince from Fuga and the halfBritish, half-Nigerian, beautiful Cynthia who sweeps him off his feet. Trending Now!!! Running: Tips to Beginning Without Making You Feel Like a Failure - part 2 CYNTHIA momoh She is an educationist, a puritan who practices what she preaches. Studied education /english from the college of education Ijaniki. A degree in education from the lagos state university, Ojo and masters degree from the university of lagos.

Hello my dear readers trust you all had a lovely Valentines! Two weeks bacl, I started by identifying helpful beginners tips to ease you into running as a form of exercise. This week we continue with the remaining tips and also I put together an 8 week timetable so you can measure your progress and also perfect your running at a comfortable pace but still effective one!

Keep a Running Diary Keeping a record of your running always helps. By writing down each day how long you ran or jogged for you would be able to measure your progress. This is also a great way to track your growing fitness and measure your resting pulse before you get up in the morning. As you get fitter, your resting pulse will get lower. Add strength exercises to the mix Building strength in your legs will help you to run better. A simple way to build your leg muscles is by doing squats. Stand with your feet a little more apart than shoulder width. As you squat, keep your feet on the ground and swing your arms to the front in order to keep your balance. Start with 3 sets of 10 squats but don’t get carried away. If you do too many at one time, you might have difficulty walking the next day! As you get fitter, you can add more sets to your squat routine. Add a cool-down period after exercise It’s important for the body to cool down after running. The best way is to walk at a medium pace until your heart-rate returns to normal. Stretch after running It’s a good practice to stretch after running because it keeps your body flexible.

Wk

ACTIVITY

1

Walk for six minutes, then jog at an easy pace for one minute. Repeat three times. Aim for three sessions with that same sequence for week one.

2

Walk for five minutes, then jog for two minutes. Repeat three times. Aim to do three sessions in week two.

3

Walk for three minutes, then jog for four minutes. Repeat four times. Aim for three sessions in week three.

4

Walk for two minutes, then jog for five minutes. Repeat four times. Shoot for three of those sessions in week four.

5

Walk for two minutes, then jog for eight minutes. Repeat three times. Do three of those sessions in week five.

6

Walk for two minutes, then jog for nine minutes. Repeat three times. Try to do three sessions for week six.

7

Walk for one minute, then jog for 11 minutes. Repeat three times. Do three sessions this week.

8

Congratulations on making it to week eight! For your first run this week, try walking for five minutes to begin and end the workout, and run for 20 minutes in between. By the end of the week, try to run for 30 minutes without stopping.

TERI Speaks Dear Teri, Can you please advise on where I can find pure retionol. Thank you, Tayo.

conclusion

Aim to run for 30 minutes three times a week, and you’ll notice that your stamina and fitness will continue to improve. Once you’re jogging 30 minutes per day, consider upping your pace so you can cover more ground in the same period of time. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to compete with your personal best and how good it’ll feel every time you reach a new goal. Soon you’ll be ready to run your first 5K marathon! Remember the trick to staying injury-free and eager to run is by taking it easy at first. Make it a goal to run to the end of the corner and back. Or try setting a time limit as I have done for you in the timetable above. If you follow these tips, I can guarantee you will become a runner – without feeling like a failure. Remember that you can start running at any age. Bob Hayes took up running when he was 60. After a little while, he decided to enter a 5km fun-run and his son gave him his first pair of trainers. Fast forward 20 years…At age 80, Bob completed his tenth 50-mile ultra-marathon in Montana and has made running history. He said afterwards: “I’m in the best shape of my life.” Next week I’ll be looking into best and worst pre – run foods. Hope you enjoyed this piece!

HARD FACTS! Use your breathing as your guide when running. You should be able to carry on a conversation while running and your breathing shouldn’t be heavy. Remember you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth when running. Drink water at the end of your workouts to rehydrate. Nigeria is hot and relatively humid, so it’s imperative to drink some water (about 4-6 ounces) halfway through your workout. For comments and questions please email terimendes@gmail. com, @terimendes. I would love to hear from you, till next week. - it’s ta ta for now! XOXO

Dear Tayo, I would recommend buying it online on amazon.com or any beauty spa in Lagos, Ikoyi or Victoria Island are good places to start looking Let me know how you get on. Best Wishes, Teri M.

WAYS TO BOOST METABOLISM • Water, water, water! Hydrate yourself with water to encourage optimal bodily function and speed up your metabolism. • Eat a palm-sized serving of protein along with complex carbohydrates every two to three hours; that means six meals a day, not three square meals. • Burn fat efficiently by adding essential fatty acids like flaxseed and unsaturated oils to the diet. • Fibre fills you up, filling you for longer than foods that do not have fibre. Certain foods like flaxseed, wheat germ and bran stimulate lazy bowel.

• Each meal should include a four - or five -ounce portion of lean protein from chicken, turkey, egg whites or white fish sources. • Sugar is white poison, sending metabolism into slow tail spin. All simple sugars – refined sugars – must be avoided to keep metabolism at optimum. • Complex carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables satisfy the needs of an active body. Each meal should include generous servings. • Certain foods have high glycemic index. This means that they induce a similar negative effect on metabolism like eating sugar. Rice cakes, potatoes and fruit juices have high glycemic index and should be consumed in moderation.

• No amount of exercise can reshape your body without appropriate nutrition. • To maintain a healthy physique, you must nourish your body with high quality food, especially lean protein and complex carbohydrate. • One of the most important habits is eating food with better quality.

• BREAD

IS BREAD A FOOD GROUP? The answer is no! But it seems one of the hardest things for people to let go of is their bread. Bread, bread, bread! Bread does little more for your body than giving it a giant dose of sugar, which often leads to tummy aches. If we think back to days long past, bread was a somewhat eat-clean food. It was made with four simple ingredients – water, whole wheat flour, yeast and a little salt. Now, we have turned bread into some sort of science experiment. From zillions of preservations to a giant dose of bleaching and bromide. Most bread offers little more than a spoonful of sugar. That is, unless you go back to your roots by making your own bread. It’s not difficult to do and the aroma seeping from your oven will definitely attract attention. You can also purchase sprouted grain breads, like ‘Ezekiel’. It’s made just as it was years ago. This bread is good food! Everything about it is clean and it will fill you with nutrition. As with any grain product, though, bread must be consumed in moderation. And for ultimate weight control, keep it out of your diet altogether – especially the white stuff! Princess Kathy is a certified nutrition and fitness consultant.
