The world woke up a few years ago to experience the surge of structural shoes thrown at buyers by shoe designers from around the world. The designers seemed to be telling fashionistas the days were over when shoes were just regular. Accessories were pushed to the front burner and every one who adorned these unusual shoes, succeeded in drawing attention away from their clothes to these beautiful works of art. Shoes siezed attention from clothes and the world saw creativity at its best. Just when you think you have seen something very unusual, someone shows up wearing a pair you can hardly describe. Height and shape became everything. It was a case of putting your best foot forward.

P

rofessor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola is the Provost, College of Medicine, University of Lagos. Until her election in 2013, no woman has accomplished that feat in the 50 year history of that institution. Her victory was not just for the female doctors in Lagos alone, but for the female doctors across the country that have never had the privilege of manning the position of Provost across colleges of medicine in the nationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Universities.

Born to Professor Akin Mabogunje and Justice Titilola Mabogunje, a retired high court judge in Ogun State, the young Folasade, the first of five children, began her educational career at the Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s College, Lagos where she fell in love with music and distinguished herself as a fine Mezzo Soprano. Her medical journey began at the then, University of Ife where she studied medicine and graduated in 1982. She obtained her Masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in medical micro biology in 1990 from the University of Lagos. That same year, she started her residency and later in 1995, she started work as a lecturer at the same University.

In 1998, she obtained her PhD. from the University of Wales, Cardiff. She was made a professor in 2008.

The elegant doctor, whose looks belies her age, is married to Mr. Segun Ogunsola, a chartered accountant and they are blessed with three children, and grandchildren.

NUANCE OF THE GIRL-CHILD - part 2 Generally, a girl-child is a female child below the age of eighteen. Indeed, several charters have addressed the importance of the well-being of children especially the girl child.

In the Nigerian social structure, the position of the girl-child is a source of concern, largely characterized by the practice of institutionalized patriarchy and polygamy. The girl-child often times faces some sort of discrimination in areas such as education, health, nutrition, household

chores, girl infanticide and foeticide among others. Hence she is a victim of harmful traditional practices.

In the patriarchal African tradition, the girl-child is perceived to be attributed less value than her male counterpart. As babies, the difference between boys and girls seem small but their opportunities for education and development becomes glaringly unequal.

At various times also, reports have described acts in which

many females babies are weaned earlier than the males as discriminatory, and following this, the girl-child often times begins to nurse a feeling of worthlessness and low self esteem, as the boys are often shown preference, as against WKH FRQĂ&#x20AC;GHQFH WKDW KHU EHLQJ an individual with unlimited potentials who should be treated with nothing short of profound love and affection,

and equally provided for in terms of food, nutrition, healthcare, education and security should bring.

AFRICA MOVIE ACADEMY, BAYELSA STATE COMMEND GLOâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S SUPPORT FOR ARTS The Africa Movie Academy and Bayelsa State Government have commended Globacom for its robust support for African arts, especially music and theatre practitioners.

The commendation of Globacom resonated throughout the 10th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State recently. From the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd), who represented the Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson to the AMAA Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Peace Anyim-Osigwe and the Director General of Bayelsa State Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Mrs Ebizi Ndiomu-Brown, the applause for Globacom, flowed in torrents.

The Deputy Governor stated in his special remarks at the AMAA, sponsored by Globacom and held at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre, Yenagoa, that corporate organisations on the African continent should emulate Globacom by investing and promoting key sectors of the economy in countries where they operate.
