Editor’s Note Our cover today is the title of a book to be presented this evening by Senator Florence Ita-Giwa. At 70, she is ‘at good place’ in life. Established as an elder stateswoman, a successful politician and entrepreneur, a style icon, mother and grandmother, ‘bestie’ to many and a friend of all! What more could she want at 70?

‘At a Good Place’ is a compilation of her life in style, written and packaged by me so rest assured, it’s a damn good work. It’s a cheerful book that chronicles her different aspects. By no means a biography, it’s surface-scratching the essence of an astute politician and woman of style.

This evening, at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Senator Ita-Giwa will host her coterie of friends and well wishers to an evening of wine, dance and an award-giving celebration.

S

enator Florence Ita-Giwa turned 70 a few days ago; February 19 to be exact. Today marks the climax of a week-long celebration to mark this landmark year. From knighthood at the Wesley Bible Church to the lavish red carpet dinner-cum-award, tonight, at the Eko Hotel & Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos, Senator Ita-Giwa has not disappointed and will not.

To the jostling paparazzi, angling for the senator and her special couture outfit for which the senator spent quiet a substantial amount to design in Lebanon, this evening is pregnant - with great expectations.

In addition to the entertainment and awards, the senator is expected to formally present a compilation of her life in style which is to be launched at the event.

In this interview with Allure, the senator talks about turning 70 and the long way to retirement.

How do you feel attaining a ripe and glorious age of 70?

I feel much fulfilled. I give glory to God that I am celebrating 70 and, by the grace of God, in good health, both physically and mentally. I feel very settled in my mind. The most interesting thing is that I am very certain that I am in the place that I should be. I feel much fulfilled with my family, with my work, with my charity and the position I rose to in my career as a politician. It is very fulfilling.

But you don’t look 70. What is the secret?

Dieting or lifestyle?

I think the answer I always give first is that, probably, because the years run so fast, the number of the years you are carrying or you have attained doesn’t allow your body the time to adjust to the number; because, by the time you know it, it is Christmas and by the time you know it, it is a new year!

I just feel that with that, it will be difficult for the body to catch up. However, naturally in my family, we age well and where I come from as an Efik woman, from the time you come into this world as a female, you are made to appreciate the fact that it is beautiful to be a female. Whatever your aspirations are, whether you aspire to be the president of a country, a doctor or whatever you want to be, the number one thing is that you must not lose your feminity. That is why I always tell people that I am a Calabar woman and I am not scared of age because from the time you are born, you are taught how to look after yourself. So, we age gracefully.

The idea is not to look young. I don’t want to be young but the idea is to age gracefully. For that reason, knowing that my body is very receptive to

food - I have a tendency to be fat - all my life, I have battled the possibility of weight. I have always watched what I eat and it has turned out to be very healthy to me. As I grew older, I took a career that is very stressful. I made it a ritual, at the end of every day, to find at least one hour where I relax my mind, relax my body and then settle back and pamper myself from a rough day; because, politics is very rough - both mentally and physically. It takes it all round so I relax myself and take a very good dinner at the end of the day. I listen to news, watch television, play music and, then, before I go to bed, I prepare myself by giving myself like 30 minutes of pampering.

Whatever problems one might face, always know that there is a solution to that problem.

At 70, what would you say are your achievements?

I think, it will be very immodest to start listing my achievements but, to be modest, I think my greatest achievement is bringing up the children of Bakassi and turning them to normal human beings; seeing the children grow, putting them in the best schools and giving them as much exposure as possible – nationally and internationally - and seeing them develop confidence in themselves; seeing them speak well and seeing them excel in school. That is my number one achievement, the success story of my children of Bakassi.

Besides that, my children have done well. My family is tremendously successful, by the grace of God, and in the field of politics that I choose as a career, I have done politics to where I managed to rise to the pinnacle of my career, which in a country as big as Nigeria, not many women can do. I was a member of the House of Representatives. I have done two conferences, constitutional and national. I have won election to the Senate twice. I have been adviser to two Presidents, two very successful presidents. So, I feel that I have done well in my chosen field. Even before I went into politics, I did well in my medical profession.

What are your regrets in life so far?

Absolutely no regrets! I thank God for every good thing and every bad thing that has happened to me. I am very grateful because God has compensated me with good things for the bad things that happened to me. If I come back, I will still do it the same way. From my career as a nurse, as a medical professional, I have enjoyed it. From venturing into politics, I have enjoyed it. I have enjoyed the liberation I got from being in politics. It has allowed me the opportunity to speak freely, speak my mind, everything that comes with politics. I have enjoyed it up to the point of still dancing in the streets at age 70! It’s all part of it because politics is liberating so I can dance in front of a crowd of 1 million people because it is my work.

So, I am totally liberated.

believe that, by the grace of God, I will live a healthy life till the day I will go. For as long as I am alive, I will continue to serve humanity.

When would you call your best moments growing into womanhood?

(Laughs…) Do you mean growing into womanhood as a baby? My best moments in life was discovering myself as a woman, discovering those things that makes a woman, discovering what aspects of career I wanted to pursue at the beginning of my own independence.

Also, meeting my husband, falling in love and getting married, having children and, most, recently would be adopting my children who today are doing amazingly well and remain my source of pride. Anytime I look at them, I feel many inches taller. All these are the things that makes growing up get really exciting. Discovering yourself and your body has been great and also knowing what you have to do in the midst of all God has created.

How would you advise other women to manage life as they age?

Well, one of the great facts of life is that aging is inevitable. Aging has to come so I don’t see the big thing about it. That is, basically, why you have what is called the ‘evolution of life’.

The young must grow and the old must continue to grow as well. People just keep growing and so there’s nothing one can do about that but one must start early in life.

First of all, try and imbibe the culture of looking after yourself and eating properly.

When I say ‘properly’, I mean eating healthy foods, living a healthy lifestyle and living in a healthy and nice environment.

One does not have to be very rich to live in a healthy environment and, most importantly, it is necessary to always have a clear mind.

Do not keep malice. If anybody offends you, you take the person on. Have your arguments and get things sorted out and, maybe, at the end of the day, superior argument will win.

Also, know that in life, as long as one believes in God, there is no problem without a solution.

Whatever problems one might face, always know that there is a solution to that problem.

Don’t just live your life worrying about what you shouldn’t worry about because I don’t. I try to simplify life.

I am a politician and I’ve been in the field of politics for twenty five years doing nothing else. I must say that it has been a very difficult period of my life, growing into politics, so I had to try and build up all kinds of defence mechanisms and self preservation because horrible things do happen in politics. It is not for people with feeble heart. You have to work out extra means of surviving it. So, in my estimation, it will be easy for Nigerian women who are not into politics.

One major thing they must also know is that they must not be scared of aging. Whatever you aspire to be, just plan it, put it in prayers and get rid of fear. Go out and get it done!

What is it that really inspires you about life and keep you staying strong?

I think my inspiration comes from, first of all, the environment in which I grew up. I grew up in an environment of very strong women. I grew up amongst my mother and even my father’s mother.

Also, my terms of responsibility helped me. I grew up knowing that I don’t have a choice than ‘to do what I have to do’ like the Americans say.

That alone gives me a lot of strength and courage. Also, looking at a lot of people that look up to me really inspires me. There a lot of people that, next to God, look up to me. That again is, indeed, inspiring. That again is very energizing.

You are one of those who believe that age is not a hindrance to getting a good life and the desire to look good, what is your advice to women to manage life as they age?

I always tell people that I am a Calabar woman and we are civilised people from beginning. There is nothing you can do about aging except to manage it and not allow it to control your life. I don’t do young things because I don’t want to be young. I can’t remember the last time I did young things because, my life has been full of very profound responsibilities and I was brought up by my mother to think like an adult - to always take responsibility.

I do not dress young because I have grown up children but I do not negotiate and will never negotiate aging beautifully and gracefully. I will not negotiate aging with my waist line in place so that I can get into my pants, my jeans and my nice dresses. That is non-negotiable!

I have always looked up to women like Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep and Tina Turner. Those are the women that inspire me because they have always looked good despite their age. After looking at them, I don’t want to be young; I just need to appreciate myself.

•Ita Giwa giving your penchant for charity?

For as long as I am alive and for as long as I can walk, which is what I pray to God. If it gets to a point that I cannot walk, from my bed, I will be involved in charity; though that will not happen because I

Do you have experts who handle your wardrobe and figure or you dictate how you look?

It is natural. I do them myself. I grew up in an environment where, from birth, apart from being a journalist, my mother was also a dress maker and she was naturally gifted. I was fortunate to be her only daughter and so she used to dress me up. I grew up dressing well and also knowing how to take care of my clothes and my things. I grew up knowing how to come out looking good and so I don’t have need for a wardrobe manager.

I know all the thousands of clothes I have because I know the time I took in buying each of them. I don’t just shop off the shelf. I take my time to pick what I want. No matter how many dresses I have, they all have their various sentimental values attached. I manage myself and, most importantly, I manage my body.

So,where does smart casual outfit fit- in , in a fashionista’s wardrobe?

Smart casual requires you to don something that bridges the gap between relaxed, comfortable everyday-wear,’ and clothes that are a little dressier and more formal. The idea is to go for durable and smart dressing option that will look good and feel comfortable.

According to him, the combo store is one of its kind in Nigeria, with the three fashion brands — Babyshop, Splash and Lifestyle — housed under one roof. Noting that Splash is a 42-year-old outfit from the UAE, he said most of their materials were sourced from the country and some other parts of the world. “Splash is a contemporary fashion apparels and accessories brand, focusing on the youth and the young at heart. The fashion clothing, ranges from youth, smart casuals, formal, as well as active wear and accessories.”

While the Lifestyle, on the other hand, showcases luxury items, especially those needed at home.

The event was witnessed by business executives and some celebrities, while the Face of Pulse 2015, Chiamaka Chinedu, led a team of models who displayed various wears from the expansive stores.

Choosing The Right Wine Glass Serving wine begins with one thing, the glass. Getting the right glass is paramount, because it determines the taste, feel and flavour of the wine and incites the right feeling on the palate. Here are some of our favourite wines and glasses suited to them.

Chardonnay Identifying a Chardonnay glass is simple because they have tapered tops and wider bowls, they can carry between 5-7 ounces of wine leaving enough space for swirling and sipping.

Chardonnay glasses also have longer stems and help keep the wine cool for longer periods.

Simple Golden Chicken

Pinot Noir Wine Pinot Noir is a fruity wine, like most wine glasses, this glass has a tapered rim. The difference is that the pinot noir wine glass has a more turned out rim which sends the wine flavours flowing down the palette easier. It can also take a volume of about 35 ounces of wine and it has a shorter stem than other wine glasses.

Sauvignon Blanc Sauvignon Blanc glasses are typically tall and slim, allowing you celebrate the flavours of the wine with your nose. The glass has a long stem and narrow bowl and can take up to 5 – 6 Ounces of wine.

Meriot Merlot glasses have larger bowls than normal wine glasses. A typical merlot glass can contain up to 30 ounces of wine, leaving lots of room for swirling and bouquets. The stem is of average length, and the base is wider than other red wine glasses.

Dessert and Ice Wines Ice wines and other sweet wines require a specialized glass. The volume ranges from 11 – 13 ounces and the bowl is highly tapered. The shape of the bowl allows for a generous swirl, while still maintaining ideal wine to air ratios. As well, the ice wine glass design succeeds in heightening the acidity of the wine, balancing the overwhelming sweetness.

Shiraz/Syrah Glasses made for Shiraz and syrah tend to be smaller than other red wine varieties. The bowl generally has a 20 ounce capacity and is severely tapered inwards. The glass has a mid-size stem and wide base. The shape of the bowl is intended to first present the fruit aromas, followed by the tannin flavors.

Champagne/ Sparkling Wines Champagne and sparkling wines are served in glasses called “flutes”. The flute is a tall, slender glass designed to focus the bubbles of a liquid on the tip of the tongue. The shape transmits the rich scent of Champagne immediately upon ingestion. It can carry about 6 – 8 ounces and the base is wide enough to provide stability.

Ingredients • 4 pieces chicken legs • 2 pieces garlic cloves • 1 pinch saffron • 1 pinch coriander • 1 pinch black pepper • 2 tbsps olive oil • 1/2 tsp honey Method: Cut the garlic into little pieces, and then add salt and the other spices and finally mash to a paste.

Make some holes in the chicken with sharp knife and place paste in the holes. It is important not to add water too much water. Let it let it cook covered over a low heat. Flip over the chicken from time to time, and don’t worry if it looks like is going to get burnt. When you think it is almost ready, add the honey. It should take around 1 hour.

FADAN HONOURS FLORENCE ITA GIWA By - Jemi Ekunkunbor

The proverbial saying that a prophet is not honoured in his home, was last weekend, shattered when members of the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN), rolled out the drums to celebrate one of their own.

Gaily dressed designers for once, took a break from sketching and converged at the grand ball room of the Oriental Hotel, Lekki to celebrate Senator Florence Ita Giwa, one of their patrons who turned 70.

Clad in a baby doll black dress embellished with sparkly stones, the excited Senator, walked into the gathering of friends and associates while Diana Ross’ 1981 hit song, “I’m coming out” hit the air waves.

In her honour, some designers, members of FADAN, put some of their finest works on the catwalk while models strutted to the delight of guests.

An emotional and grateful Ita Giwa, thanked FADAN for the honour done her, while calling on women to conquer the fear of aging. According to her, “age is not ugly, age is beautiful”. She added that in spite of her hectic schedule as a politician, she finds about 40 minutes in a day to pamper herself.

In her remarks, president of FADAN, Funmi Ajila, said hosting Senator Ita Giwa, was a way not only of celebrating a fashion Icon and patron, but of giving back to a woman who has patronised almost all the designers.
