Editor’s Note Fashion is art. Think of it as a fusion made in ‘creative heaven’. Two becoming one; an inseparable unity that is both beautiful and expressive.

From a plain surface, shape and form begin to emerge until the creative hands give an exhaling sigh.

So, when fashion designers recognise this unique quality and decide to celebrate it, what emerges is the ‘Fashion/Art Festival’ coming up early November.

These perceptive designers: Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Ayo Van Elmar and Austin Aimankhu are instruments that nature’s energy deployed to set the balls of celebration flying. The outcome is unimaginable bliss for an industry on the verge of a climatic experience and we are very much part of it.

Come November, we are re-launching our ‘Fashion Edition’ - a mustsee in November.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as a fashion and wellness magazine, we cannot but be part of this campaign. For the rest of the month, we shall focus on different aspects of this scrooge. For today, Pamela Echemunor researched on some foods that protect from cancer. She also spoke with two ladies who, recently, set up a diagnostic centre. See pp. 4 and 5.

• Oily Fish Fish oil contains Omega 3 Fatty acids which are powerful anti-inflammatory agents that drive localised negative hormones, called eicosanoids which inflame and irritate. Oily fish also contain vitamin A, an important vitamin in the fight against cancer, fish like herring, mackerel and salmon are potent producers of Omega 3. Omega 3 from fish is an important ingredient in your cancer diet.

• Carrots Carrots contain anti-cancer carotenoids like beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A when the body requires it. Apricots, peppers and pumpkins, also contain carotenoids. Try this delicious cancer fighting recipe. 1 cup of carrot juice, 2 sweet potatoes, 16 dried apricots and 4 cups of red cherries will each provide 25 milligrams. Also make a glass of juice with carrots, apples and a dash of ginger; this is an amazing cancer fighting drink • Red and Yellow Peppers These vegetables are high in Vitamin C, which strengthens your immune cells and neutralizes toxins. Researchers recommend cancer patients should consume at least 2 to 10 grams per day.

Other high Vitamin C foods include Orange, Broccoli, papaya, berries, cherries, and grapes.

Pumpkin Seeds Pumpkin seeds contain Vitamin E which boosts your immune system´s fighting abilities. 5 tablespoons mixed in your morning cereal, will each provide 20 milligrams of vitamin E, which hinders cancer cell growth and protects immune cells from free radicals. • Mushrooms The Japanese believe inherently in using mushroom as natural treatment for all forms of diseases, according to research Shiitake, Maiitake, cordyceps etc, all boost the immune system and fight cancer.

• Green leafy vegetables Vegetables like avocado, beans, carrots, apricots, pumpkins, and egg yolk all contain Vitamin B folic acid. CELEBRATING FASHION AND ART By - Yemisi Suleiman

R

ecently, fashion shows around the globe featured lots of wearable arts in different forms. Raising the bar in Nigeria are three Nigerian established designers; Austin Aimankhu also known as Luzol, Ejiro Amos Tafiri and Ayo Van Elmar, who incorporate delicate floral, designs in appliqué, ribbon embroidery/ beadworks to create African/European oriented designs. The trio are set to revolutionise the Nigeria fashion industry with a fashion show tagged, ‘Fashion Arts Fusion’.

The show which holds November 1st at the Oriental Hotel Lagos, will feature a kaleidoscope of creative arts, a holy matrimony between the runway and visual art. The designers spoke to Allure on the forthcoming show, their love and trials of the needle profession.

Fashion Arts Fusion Is A Union Between Runway And Visual Arts...

ustin Aimankhu is the face behind the label, Luzol known for his trademark, “Appliqué on Fabrics”. Like his personality, his designs are calm, not extravagant. The initiator of Fashion Arts Fusion (FAF) was born to Police man father and attended five primary schools due to his father’s frequent transfers. To solve the problem, it was decided he went to boarding school for his secondary education which he did at St Peter Clavers College, Aghalokpe in Delta State. The law graduate of the University of Benin, says the vision of this fashion show, is not only about the runway, but a platform to promote total arts of our country and beyond.

•Austin Aimankhu What is the objective of the show?

The objective of the show is to promote and celebrate our art and fashion, to promote our culture and thus drive tourism. There is also the objective of giving back to society. As part of the FAF, three final year fashion students from Yaba College of Technology will be given the opportunity to showcase their designs alongside other established fashion designers. They will also be mentored and assisted in setting shop after graduation. From next year, it will be thrown out to other fashion students in other institutions in the country. Also, a particular charity will be supported from the proceeds of each FAF. For this year, we are supporting Noah’s Arch Sickle Cell Foundation.

What should we expect to see at the event?

At the event, you will see fashion by three established fashion designers, Luzol, Ejiro Amos Tafiri and Ayo Van Elmar. You will see dance by Ijodee, spoken word by Ivori and Donna, music by Adunni Nifratiti, Squad one etc. We are bringing these other art forms on the runway for two reasons; to entertain and to bring them to the public space so as to give them the recognition they deserve. Thus you will see dance, music (alternative music), spoken word etc. sharing the runway with fashion. There will also be exhibitions. It promises to be very entertaining.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

My inspiration comes from people, what they wear and the fabrics. Show me a beautiful fabric and ideas of what to do with it start coming. I am also inspired by colours.

How did you get your start as a fashion designer?

I got into fashion by accident. It was when I visited a friend, Kese Jabari at his workshop. I fell in love with what he was doing and later, ended up as his manager. I have not looked back since then. I started my label when Kese relocated to America.

Does your work reflect your personal fashion taste? Can you describe your style?

I think to a large extent it does. My taste is conservative and this reflects in my work.

My designs are calm and not extravagant. This could also have been influenced by the kind of clients I cater for; they are the middle, upwardly mobile corporate class, whose taste are practical and not experimental.

Ten years on as a designer, how has it been and what are the challenges?

Thus far, the fashion business has been interesting. The one or two other investments that I have, I fund with the proceeds of this business. Fashion designing has its ups and downs like other businesses. Its challenges are not too different from other business in this environment; the power problem, the issue of inaccessibility of

What is the relationship between fashion, arts and music?

Fashion, arts and music are all different art forms but they are related. They are an extension of a people’s self-expression. They reveal the mood and are solid indicators of the societal collective trend. You can judge the peoples thought forms and outlook by these art forms. They are to a large extent, interrelated.

If you were not designing clothes, what would you be doing?

I would have been involved in the theatre, writing books and plays for the theatre or lecturing in the university.

How far do you hope to take fashion Arts Fusion?

As far as possible, within and outside the shores of this country.

My Inspiration Comes From My Experience As An Afro-European AYO VAN ELMAR orn Ayo Elizabeth Olaogun to Nigerian parents, Ayo Van Elmar as she is famously known, lived in Vienna, Austria for more than a decade. The brand which is a fusion of cultures, initially started with a pop-‐up store in the centre of Vienna and catered to European clients.

Momentarily, the brand is selling in her place of birth, Vienna, London and Lagos. Known for creating edgy, eccentric and out of the box collections, Ayo Van Elmar, has created several pieces and styled a significant number of men on TV shows such as, Nigeria’s Got Talents and The Glo X-‐Factor West Africa. The Fashion Arts Fusion will debut Ayo Van Elmar’s first male collection on the runway. The brand has catered for men behind the scenes since 2012 and is excited to land her menswear capsule collection on this show alongside the women’s wear for Spring Summer 2016. Fusing items that may individually be referred to as African/African-‐oriented and European elements is indeed an art as she reveals.

Having students from the Yaba College of Technology participating in the show, what do you think this would do for the young up and coming fashion designers and the industry at large?

Having students from our own Yaba College of Technology, supporting and mentoring them, would definitely influence the young and emerging fashion designers of Nigeria. In the near or far future, Fashion Arts Fusion would eventually become a platform that these students can turn to and get the opportunity to ignite their career in a professional manner.

At what point in life did you discover your flair for designing?

The artistic strength I believe is inborn in my case, but the desire for making clothes or starting my own line I must confess, was ignited by those first eight years of working as a model after my relocation to Vienna. Modeling in my earlier years, really enlightened me and quickened my desire to start my own line someday. I remember thinking very often to myself during photo shoots and runway shows, “Oh! I could do so much better than that”. Another great influence, is the perception of the African culture when you are away from the culture’s vicinity, reminiscing on the boldness and readiness for patterns and colour. I engaged in various artworks in high school, made paintings, sketched a lot, made frames, woodwork, but not fashion. I guess the art of fashion was hidden somewhere in the midst of them all.

When did your career in the fashion industry begin and what inspired it?

My career in the fashion industry began when I got admitted into the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. Only a few were admitted from the hundreds that apply to study fashion design from across the globe. I was privileged to be one of the eight students that were admitted in that academic year of 2010. That opportunity, truly reinforced my belief in myself as a creative person and boosted my assurance of being on the right track. The desire to embark on this career journey and to become a fashion designer, was inspired by a deep passion and a strong taste in me to stand up for my true self, to let the artist in me find expression and to explore the

characters of a creator.

How has your company evolved over the years?

Considering that Ayo Van Elmar was launched just a couple of years ago, in May 2011 and the brand only commenced business operations in Nigeria two years ago, I am proud to say boldly that the brand has grown in leaps and bounds. The brand has grown from strength to higher strength, showcased collections in Berlin and Vienna Fashion Weeks and at the London Fashion Week too. The brand’s vision of building a trans-‐generational household brand with stores across the globe; Africa, Europe, America and beyond, has started with a step in Lagos, where the brand has recently opened the first flagship store in Africa.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I draw my inspiration from my experience as an Afro-‐European. I love travelling to get inspired. Verily, Vienna and in the broader sense, Europe at large is my pool of inspiration. When I have been away for a while, I always return to admire Europe’s beauties, her most impressive baroque edifices, her richness in culture and art, the operas, the theatre and the music. I can’t wait to further explore certain regions in Africa.

What do you enjoy most about designing clothes and what is the most challenging aspect?

What I enjoy most about designing clothing, is choosing the colours and the fabrics that I would like to have in a particular collection, and understanding the concept and the story behind that particular choice. I ultimately, enjoy the pleasures of presentation on the runway. The most challenging aspect is sitting tirelessly and endlessly in the workshop and guiding every step of the process of realization. This can be so exhausting and strenuous.

Who inspires you the most in fashion?

The male or female designer who inspires me the most in the fashion world changes from time to time.

I don’t know why it’s often the men. Recently, my major inspirations were Tom Ford and Dries Van Noten.

Nowadays, my inspiration is often geared up by Micheal Kors. He has such a riveting story. From work-

•Ayo Van Elmar ing in retail at a young age to the point where Michael Kors Holdings went public in 2011. His brand is a dominant player in today’s market of affordable luxury.

These inspiring figures have also got one head and 24 hours in a day, just like me!

Does your work reflect your personal fashion taste?

Can you describe your style?

My personal style is very comfortable, very self-‐driven.

Because my design and thought process is very intense and often bombarded with interruptions, I often choose putting comfort and freedom first in my own everyday styling. Loose clothing means freedom and allows enough room for germination. I enjoy freedom from constraints and I am often void of tightness.

What fashion piece do you like designing most?

My favourite piece is the man’s blazer as well as the woman’s suit. Any kind of piece that can be constructed out of the underlying structure, similar to that of a suit or a blazer. I love blazers, I love the layout, the solidity, the impression and the aura that such a piece carries. There is something firm and sharp, daring and bold about a coat, a suit or a blazer. These kinds of cuts are my absolute favourite.

Do you always design your own clothes?

No, I don’t. I wear casual pieces that I like from other brands especially, pieces from fellow emerging African designers like Rock by Dapo Desina.

REPORTAGE Do you pay attention to what other designers are doing?

Yes, I do. If it is a brand whose creative director inspires me, I follow them on social media. I read up stories and articles about their progress and I stay in touch virtually. I follow Balmain, and Jason Wu because, I like their creative designers/directors. Bally, JW Anderson and Balenciaga’s freshly-appointed creative directors are inspiring because, they are guys in their mid-‐thirties. They are young and shaking the fashion world!

If you were not designing clothes, what would you be doing?

If I weren’t a fashion designer, I would be a health

consultant. I completed a five‐year magister programme in nutritional sciences and public health. I would be consulting on health matters, on how to eat right and how to lead a healthy lifestyle, both on individual level and national levels.

What advice would you give to young people who look up to you and want to pursue a career in fashion designing?

Whatever is worth doing at all, is worth doing well, with an undivided attention. You have got to be able to stick to it, to be consistent. Especially to those in Nigeria, Fashion Design is not a journey where one makes money quickly. Go gain

experience in all areas, not just designing but, in retailing and fashion marketing too. Great things take longer than you expect. Develop yourself and study hard.

Tell us what we don’t know about you?

I consider myself a workaholic and I couldn’t imagine life without all the busyness that constantly surround me. I guess I would be bored to my bones without all of that.

Her label which birthed in her bedroom in her parent’s house, five years ago, has evolved over the years and is taking on the world.

What should we expect from you when the show holds?

My Spring Summer 2016, ‘Stained glasses’ collection.

How do you think this event will impact on young designers?

It will be a very good platform for them to get people to take notice of their talent, brand and offerings. It will also afford them the opportunity to access mentorship from seasoned designers, who have walked the same path they are venturing on to.

At what point in life did you discover your flair for designing?

I would say right from primary school, I tweak everything that was mine at the slightest opportunity, to make it different from other people’s stuff. I was that kid that was always sewing and making stuff with needle and thread.

When did your career in the fashion industry begin and what inspired it?

My career started when I gained admission in Arts School to Study Fashion at Yaba College of Technology. I discovered Fashion Design and Clothing Technology was a course I could study in the higher institution during a school excursion to Yabatech in my SS 1. I immediately started planning secretly, how I could ditch Medicine for fashion. It was very difficult to execute but it worked out eventually How has your company evolved over the years?

We have grown through the birth stage, to teething, to crawling to walking. Now we have two offices, a production studio and a flagship store off Awolowo road, Ikoyi, with plans to plant a couple more across the country.

Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

I find inspiration mostly from the study or observation of cultures.

What do you enjoy most about designing clothes and what is the most challenging part?

What I love most is being able to create. It is the

excitement of birthing something new, and seeing how people respond to it. The most challenging part is balancing time, being a creative entrepreneur, balancing time to run the business effectively, plan for growth and expansion and then, spend time in the studio creating can be tough. But I get to live my dream every day so I have no complaints.

Not one particular person, but I will g ‎ o with Ellie Saab.

Yes it does. My style is cosmopolitan, comfortable and unique.

Oh yes, definitely. I never see my brand as just a Nigerian brand, but as an international brand. The Ejiro Amos Tafiri woman is a citizen of the world.

Do you pay attention to what other designers are doing?

Yes, definitely. As a business woman, I have to pay close attention to the competition and the people you look up to.

If you were not a fashion designer, what would you have been?

I would have been a medical doctor.

What advice would you give to young people who look up to you and want to pursue a career in fashion designing?

HOW TO LOSE TORSO (UPPER BODY) FAT FAST - part I As a woman, you may be concerned with having excess fat on your upper body, especially on the chest, back, arms or stomach. Too much fat in these areas can make your clothes fit poorly, cause body rolls or make you generally self-conscious.

Abdominal fat can predispose you to heart disease and metabolic disorders. However, with the proper exercise regimen, you can lose weight on your upper body and the rest of your frame to be healthier and look great.

CARDIO Cardiovascular exercise is essential if you want to lose weight on any part of your body, regardless of your gender or your specific problem areas. Cardio burns calories and you must create a caloric deficit to lose weight and fat. Popular choices include jogging, running, cycling and swimming. Commit to a routine of at least 30 minutes, five times a week to see results quickly, recommends the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

LUNGE KICK The lunge kick is a multi-movement exercise that works your abs, legs and cardiovascular system all at once. While standing with your legs together, step forward with your right leg and lower yourself into a lunge. As you come out of it, lift your left foot off the floor, kick your leg straight in the air in front of you and place your left foot on the floor. Perform a lunge, lift your right foot off the floor and kick your leg in the air. Alternate each leg with every lunge.

When you lower yourself down, do not let your back knee touch the floor. Keep your back straight and your core tight throughout this exercise.

RUSSIAN TWIST A Russian twist works your upper belly and obliques at the same time. The obliques are on the sides of your stomach. While sitting on the floor, lean backward until your back is at a 45-degree angle to the floor. Bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Extend your arms straight in front of your chest and rotate your torso from side to side in a steady motion.

THE BEST ABS EXERCISES: SIDE PLANK & THE TWO-POINT PLANK: Two-point planks work your abs and lower back muscles simultaneously. While lying on your stomach, place your feet together and your forearms flat on the floor and shoulder-width apart. Steadily lift your hips off the floor until your back is straight. Extend your right arm straight in front of you and your left leg straight behind you. After holding this position for 20 to 30 seconds, switch sides. For a more challenging variation, support yourself with your hands instead of your forearms.

Well, some Africans do juju! If you are not in an active covenant with God and serving Him, you will be a victim!

The young men’s scams happen in different ways. Some of them will say, “Aunty, I have this guy you will like; who will be great company for you.

The only problem is that he lives in the UK and just getting divorced from his European wife who has refused to come down to Nigeria with him. Even if he comes down, he will have to start all over again except he has something he can start doing here when he comes.”

30s At this age you need to focus on the best choices because your metabolism starts to slow down a bit.

Thirty-something need to eat mainly vegetablebased meals with a palm-sized serving of protein (such as chicken, fish, eggs or meat). Too many complex carbohydrates or refined sugars at this age will cause an increase of insulin in the body, which will lead to an increase of fat around the sides. And fish-oil supplements are a must - if you didn’t take them in your 20s, definitely start taking them now (just to remind you, they help your body to burn fat around your middle).

Ideal exercise: Exercise-wise, people who have normally been very active in their 20s (either playing sport or going to the gym) tend to slow down as they reach their 30s. Because they have less free time thanks to a more demanding job or a family, their activity levels often take a dip.

Yet, crucially, their eating habits stay the same (or often deteriorate), which equals weight gain. This is just a general observation of some of my clients, and is not always the case. I also have clients who buck this trend and discover exercise in their 30s, having spent their 20s avoiding it.

Thirty-something should really vary their exercise - you need a mix of cardio (such as running, swimming, and aerobics), weight training and flexibility (such as yoga or Pilates). Relaxing exercises are really important in your 30s, as your cortisol (the stress hormone) levels rise, causing belly fat. Regular massage (though not strictly an exercise!) is also a good habit to get into in your 30s, as it reduces cortisol build-up and stress.

How To Host Wine Tasting

Wine tasting can be a lot of fun, there’s nothing more interesting than a group of people getting drunk without intention. Although most times during wine tasting, guests are advised to spit out the wine as opposed to swallowing, but most of us are daunting alcoholics so good luck with that. The bottom-line is wine tasting parties aren’t about getting drunk, they are about getting to appreciate God’s gift that is wine and also socialize, learn and fraternize with fellow wine patriots. So, if you’re looking to host a wine tasting, happy reading!

1. CHOOSE YOUR WINES

There’s no particular wine that will please all your guests and have the perfect party, but to be on the safe side, choose wines from regions like the South of France, Napa Valley, Santa Barbara wine country and South Africa.

2. SORT FOR GOOD FOOD AS ACCOMPANIMENT

The truth is, one shouldn’t be eating during wine tasting, the few acceptable foods are bread, crackers or cheese, which are good for cleansing the palate without necessarily interrupting the tasting process. Ideally, some sort of food should be provided so your guests don’t get wine drunk during or after the event, or at least without anything to absorb the alcohol.

3. GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES

You should try to invite people who have a similar knowledge about wine. 6. PRACTICE AND MASTER WINE TASTING METHODS

Tasting wine is easy, it doesn’t take much to look like a professional, just tell your guests what they’re going to drink, have them hold the glass and swirl it lightly around for a few seconds to let the wine “breathe,” and then make them smell the wine to get a better sense of the flavours. After that, your guests should take a small sip of the wine, swirl it around their mouths for several seconds, and then either swallow it or spit it out, to avoid getting drunk.

7. GAME TO LIGHTEN THE MOOD After you’ve concluded on the wine selection, there are certain things to put on the list including appropriate wine glasses; which should be triple the number of people you’re expecting. Get additional corkscrews; because you don’t want any surprises. A spittoon for guests to emit wine into, An ice bucket for chilling white wine; this will keep you from running to the fridge, a tasting grid to help your guests identify the flavors of the wine and jot down their impressions. A decanter for the wine; this can help bring out the flavours in a red wine.

And finally, bread, cheese or crackers to taste in between wines.

4. INVITE YOUR GUESTS

Many at times, the ideal number of guests to invite to a wine tasting shouldn’t exceed a dozen. If you

Play a fun game where you put the wine bottles in brown paper bags and pour the wine for your guests without telling them which wine it is. 8. SERVE FOOD AFTERWARDS

To avoid guests getting drunk, the best way is to keep them in one place and stuffing food in their faces. You can serve more dessert-style foods, something light will do, like cheese, a light fruit salad, chocolate, spiced meat etc.

Flat Belly Delicacies It’s a difficult thing trying to lose belly fat. Research has shown that at least 89 percent of women are overweight in the world and the growth of fast-food chains in our economy is a huge contributor to creating this struggle.

The main reasons we find ourselves in this predicament, owes to the fact that most ladies are kitchen lazy or feel like what they purchase at fast food restaurants are difficult to cook or that the ingredients are hard to find.

The fact is all these ingredients can be gotten at your local supermarket or major city malls. Here are some simple and delicious recipes to try out that are great for your weight loss process.

CHICKEN CORDON BLEU Ingredients • 1/2 cup whole-wheat breadcrumbs.

• 2 egg whites, beaten.

• 4-ounce skinless, boneless chicken breasts, pounded to 1/4-inch thick.

• 4 ounces low fat, low-sodium, thinly sliced ham.

• 2 ounces part-skim, low-sodium Swiss cheese.

Method: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Place the whole-wheat breadcrumbs in a large bowl or shallow dish and the beaten eggs in a separate bowl or shallow dish. Dip each chicken breast in the beaten egg, and then dip them in the breadcrumbs for even coating. Place the chicken on the prepared baking sheet. Place 1 ounce of ham and 1/2 ounce of Swiss cheese on one end of each chicken breast.

Carefully roll the chicken breasts until the ham and cheese are in the middle with the chicken wrapped completely around the outside. Secure with a toothpick if needed.

Then bake for 30 – 40 minutes.

HOT AND SPICY VEGETARIAN CHILI Ingredients • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 3 garlic cloves, finely chopped • 1 green bell pepper, chopped • 1 red bell pepper, chopped • 1 medium green onion, finely chopped • 3 large celery ribs, chopped • One 28-ounce can no-salt-added diced tomatoes • 4 cups water • 2 cups red kidney beans, cooked and drained • 1 cup black beans, cooked and drained Jalapeño, chopped Method: In a large stockpot, add olive oil over medium heat. Add the garlic, bell peppers, onion, and celery, and cook until the vegetables are softened, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes, chili seasoning, and 4 cups of water and stir. Allow to simmer over medium heat for 20 minutes. Stir in the kidney beans, black beans, and the jalapeño (seed the jalapeño if you want less heat to the chili), and allow to simmer for an additional 30 minutes.

For Chili seasoning 1 tablespoon chili powder 2 teaspoons black pepper 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon onion powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon dried oregano In a small bowl, combine the chili powder, black pepper, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, paprika, and oregano.

The line which was tagged “Rome collection”, featured trends ranging from crop tops to Capri pants. The collection is best described as wearable fashion, for the trendy, cool and yet simple woman.

The designer Caterina Bartolussi, also made exceptional use of aso-oke, batik and tie & dye. The collection presented by models of the Dare2Dream competition, was part of an initiative of Kinabutti in an effort to train women in entrepreneurial skills acquisition and rural development. Attendees of the exclusive event, included selected style editors and enthusiasts of the fashion industry in Nigeria.
