Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with men and holding her own as Tribunal Chairman, Mrs. Ngozi CHINAKWALAM brooks no nonsense and has ensured that the Nigerian Investments and Securities Tribunal has retrieved 360 billion naira for the investing public.

This success she credits to the establishment of the tribunal

dedicated to prosecuting wrong doers in the stock market; the exact recommendation made by Mrs. Farida Waziri, former EFCC boss, who had advocated that a tribunal be set up to exclusively try corrupt officials in the public sector. That way, corruption cases in the country can be expeditiously dispensed with.

t was the week when fashion came to town as the beautiful, the gorgeous and the fashion savvy turned up to witness the 5th edition of the Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) 2015, a show, which over the years has grown to become Europe’s largest catwalk event of Africa and African inspired fashion designs.

Set in the magnificient West Hall of the Olympia, nestled in the heart of Kensington London, the two day fashion fiesta played host to designers, exhibitors, style reporters and bloggers from around the globe.

As is tradition, the AFWL is at the forefront of promoting and showcasing the very best of Africa’s emerging designers, while capturing the surge of African inspired trends and this year was no exception.

Blending several themes to create one whole, designers delivered across the board tailoring and day wear, to party dresses and evening gowns. All or most parts made with the African fabrics, playful in parts and elegant in others. Day one came to a dramatic close with the KZN Fashion Council, South African Collective.

Founder Africa Fashion Week London Ronke Ademiluyi (m0 with kamari Ademiluyi and partner

showcased an extraordinary collection made mostly from SA fabrics, in designs depicting the beauty of the Zulu Kingdom. It was a proud set of South Africans who came on stage waving their country’s flag to am impressed audience.

Day two began on a vibrsnt note with House of Tangerine, Njema Helena, Soraya da Lda, VanElse and others offering a variety of collections; from beautiful bold colours, high Victorian necks, floral patterns conjured up day dresses and ball dresses comprised of chiffon layers and plunging necklines. It was all very prim and very pretty with African Western twist. Artistic fashion designer Steve Mandy returned this year with his wearable works of arts collection comprising of t-shits, and vibrant evening dresses.

The Africa Fashion Week London 2015, came to an enchanting end with a brilliant coordinated collection by Needle Point. Nigeria’s Needle Point collection is one show everyone who

had attended the AFWL in the last two years looks forward to. Not afraid to experiment with prints and clashing colours, Her collection as always was bright and full of creativity, bringing playfulness to the Africa Fashion Week London like no other.

From the memorable moments on the runway, to the band stand and energetic performance by Valentine, the AFWL 2015 was no doubt an eventful one. And for Ronke Ademiluyi Founder of the AFWL and her team, while basking in the euphoria of their five years journey, here is hoping they continue to stay true to the vision of promoting and showcasing the very best of Africa’s emerging designers and talents.

Today, the internet is flooded with stories about Jane Birkin’s request that Hermès stop using her name on crocodile Birkin bags. In the flurry of articles, actual specifics of Birkin’s request may have been missed: Birkin was presented a video by PETA that showed unethical practices being used on a crocodile farm in Texas, to which she asked the house to refrain from using her name on croc Birkins until the issue was resolved.

The more interesting issue at hand is that even if Birkin were to request her name removed from the Hermès line that bears it, she would have no rights to it as reports have claimed that the name was trademarked in 1997 by Hermès, giving the house the ability to use it as it however they please.

- Protecting Investors Money By - Pamela Echemunor

C

hief Justice Ngozi Chinakwalam is the Chief Judge and Chairperson of the Investment and Securities Tribunal, a tribunal set up to tackle malpractices in the capital market.

The commission was set up as a result of fraudulent dealings between investors and their clients. When Chief Justice Chinakwalam joined the Investment and Securities Tribunal, it had certain issues ranging from an unfit working environment to financial challenges. To this cause, she tasked herself in securing a befitting office space and made the tribunal a world class tribunal among many other things.

She is also the former Solicitor General of Abia State and has been a legal practitioner for over four decades. Her biggest inspiration was her father who was also a judge and a very strict parent. Being a woman in the legal system, according to her, never made her feel inferior to men; because she believes that if one works hard then your sex doesn’t matter.

She tells us that she gets her fashionable side from her mother who was a fashion designer and she takes after her father when it comes to her professional life. In this interview, she talks about her life, challenges and highlights of being the Chairperson of the Investments and Securities Tribunal.

What is the mandate of the Investment and Securities Tribunal?

The Investment and Securities Tribunal adjudicates on capital market cases; cases arising from shares, stock brokers, Nigeria Stock Exchange, Securities and Exchange Commission and so on. Furthermore, the tribunal came about after the government set up a panel; normally, in the regular court, cases take a long time. Cases concerning the capital market need to be decided timely because shares are very volatile. Matters concerning the capital market have to be decided very expeditiously. At a point in time, the Federal Government felt that there was need to look into what could be done so they set up a panel known as the “Odife Panel”.

After extensive investigation, the Odife Panel came up with a report and one of the recommendations in the report was the setting up of a different tribunal from the regular courts to handle capital market cases. That is how the Investment and Securities Tribunal (IST) came to be and it took off in the year 2002. We are also very expeditious; the law says we should complete all cases within 90 days and we do.

Have there been any landmark cases?

Yes, we have quite a lot of landmark cases.

How has the tribunal been able to help investors?

The law makes provision for setting up an investors’ protection fund. Many investors lose their money; loads of money, running into millions, especially when it’s about fraudulent activities by bankers or stockbrokers or any infraction whatsoever. Provision was made for that fund in the Investment and Securities Act. There is also a committee that takes care of that fund which was inaugurated last year, 2014.

When did you join the tribunal?

I joined the tribunal in the year 2013.

When you just joined the tribunal, what was the experience like?

When I came in, I met quite a number of challenges; number one, we didn’t have a befitting office at the headquarters, even at the zonal offices. They were rented apartments and like we all know, many landlords don’t like to renovate their buildings. So, where we worked in Abuja was… Hmmmmm! I don’t want to say

an eyesore though.

One of my first ambitions was to get us a befitting place because we are a world class tribunal. The United States Securities and Exchange Commission doesn’t even have our kind of tribunal and when we were there in 2013, we were about eighty something countries that attended the work shop. The officials kept telling others to go and emulate Nigeria; that Nigeria is a trail blazer for setting up this kind of tribunal that is very commendable. As a world class tribunal, we should also have a befitting environment because, like I researched, various countries in Africa should come and borrow a leave from us.

The second challenge was funding. Normally, we are funded from Federal Government budgetary allocation but with the economy dwindling, the budgetary allocation has been falling over the years so, there was not much to take care of basic needs of the tribunal. But we have always been asking for funding from the capital market because the other players in the market like the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Central Securities Clearing System – all major players in the capital market – are getting funded from the proceeds from transaction fees. I joined the tribunal in the year 2013.

When you just joined the tribunal, what was the experience like?

When I came in, I met quite a number of challenges; number one, we didn’t have a befitting office at the headquarters, even at the zonal offices. They were rented apartments and like we all know, many landlords don’t like to renovate their buildings. So, where we worked in Abuja was… Hmmmmm! I don’t want to say

an eyesore though.

One of my first ambitions was to get us a befitting place because we are a world class tribunal. The United States Securities and Exchange Commission doesn’t even have our kind of tribunal and when we were there in 2013, we were about eighty something countries that attended the work shop. The officials kept telling others to go and emulate Nigeria; that Nigeria is a trail blazer for setting up this kind of tribunal that is very commendable. As a world class tribunal, we should also have a befitting environment because, like I researched, various countries in Africa should come and borrow a leave from us.

The second challenge was funding. Normally, we are funded from Federal Government budgetary allocation but with the economy dwindling, the budgetary allocation has been falling over the years so, there was not much to take care of basic needs of the tribunal. But we have always been asking for funding from the capital market because the other players in the market like the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigerian Stock Exchange and the Central Securities Clearing System – all major players in the capital market – are getting funded from the proceeds from transaction fees. It was like war but I am happy to say that eventually, the former Co-ordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, last year, directed the Securities and Exchange Commission to look into it holistically and make sure we get funding because that was the only way we could operate. So, I am happy to say that, as of last year, an order was made for us to get the funding; even though there are a few hiccups and resistance here and there.

Another challenge was staff not being promoted.

We conducted promotion examinations last year to promote the backlog of people (due for promotion) and we have also gotten approval from the Federal Executive Council to get our own house in Abuja, which we will move into soon.

Do you have one or two memorable moments at the tribunal you can tell us about?

Well, the most memorable moment to me was when we got the Federal Executive Council approval to acquire our own property and also when the Presidency gave approval to the Federal Capital Territory to give us land in the Central Business District where we would now develop our own purpose-built office.

Are you the first female Chief Justice of the tribunal?

No. I am the second. The first was female too. The tenor is five years, renewable for another five years.

The first chairman spent two tenors of five years each making it ten.

How does it feel being a woman at the top among male counterparts?

I don’t feel any different from them. I believe if you work hard enough, nobody will use your being a woman to judge you when it comes to the professional world.

Have you ever faced any kind of discrimination in this field?

Not at all. I have not.

What is the state of the capital market as a community?

There was a slump in the capital market after the general problem that occurred between 2007/2008/2009 but now, it is picking up. If you look at the daily report in the capital market pages, the transactions are building up. There was a lull prior to the elections; people were apprehensive. They didn’t know what the outcome of the elections would be but immediately after the elections, we noticed a sudden rise.

Would you say the tribunal helped investors build confidence?

The capital market is just building up so we are flowing along with it. Since I came in, we have handled and delivered about fifty five judgments and the total value of the judgments from the tribunal so far, in monetary value, is about N360 billion. That is the monetary value of the cases we have handled because some of them are high volume cases.

Are there any outstanding issues concerning people who have lost their money?

Yes, there are because lawyers always like to explore loop holes in the law. What I noticed is that lawyers will come up with preliminary objections, claiming that they are challenging the jurisdiction of the tribunal. Once we rule and say we have jurisdiction and want to continue hearing, the next thing is they will file an appeal at the Court of Appeal and just dump the case.

We have a lot of pending cases at the Court of Appeal because of this. So, what we did to try and salvage that situation, last year, was to promulgate new IST rules. One of the rules is that if you have a preliminary objection, file it alongside your case; we will hear everything together. At the point of judgment, if your preliminary objection was done and we notice that it

After that, if they aren’t satisfied with the judgment from there, they come and appeal to the tribunal.

One can also come directly to the tribunal. For example, if you have complained to SEC and they didn’t do anything, one then has the right to file the matter before us directly. So, we are both an appellate court and a court of first instance in regards to those civil cases.

What kind of cases has the tribunal tackled?

Market manipulation, share manipulation, share infractions. For instance, when the banks were claiming to give people loans to buy shares and so on; if a stockbroker sells your shares without your permission and so on. We also have cases of people collecting funds from investors, claiming that they are investing them and, at the end of the day, they misappropriate the funds etc.

What department is under the tribunal that can help people who can’t afford to go to regular courts?

That would be the Alternative Dispute Resolution Department. It deals with small claims; like when you buy about 10,000 shares. This unit can help deal with that, if issues arise.

How has working with the tribunal affected you personally?

It has broadened my perspective because it is a different challenge altogether – in my professional career. I have been in criminal prosecution, in civil litigation and this is adjudication.

How many years have you been a legal practitioner?

Wow! A very long time ago. I was called to the Bar in 1978 (laughs).

Your father was also a judge. Did this inspire your career choice?

Well, I would say he did inspire me but he didn’t force me. My mum was a fashion designer while my dad was a lawyer and then a judge. So, in-between the two, I kept saying I would be a fashion designer; the next day I would say I want to be a lawyer (laughs).

How do you juggle between work and play?

I have always been a workaholic (laughs) so I work all week and play weekends. (laughs) What does success mean to you?

I think success should be measured by others, not you.

To me, I am always fulfilled and content.

•Chinakwalam What is your countenance like when you’re in court?

No smiling while sitting (laughs) but in my office, I smile.

How do you spend your holidays?

My children live in the US so when I go and visit them, that is a good holiday for me.

You are a very athletic person and golf is one of your main sports. Why did you choose to play it?

I have always been a sports person. I used to play hockey for my university and I used to play tennis too.

Maybe, because of hockey I took up golfing as well.

But these days, I am so lazy. I prefer to lie down and rest.

You are absolutely glowing. Do you have any beauty regime you follow?

I just shower and use my regular lotions and move on. (laughs) What item or items do you splurge on?

I love perfumes. I have a lot. I don’t know all their names (laughs) but I love them.

What advice do you have for the youths?

I tell both youths and graduates to learn a craft. You can’t imagine the amount of CVs I get every day. I just tell them to study a craft. I know some young ladies who are photographers, make-up artists, designers etc. that are doing well. The reality on ground has changed.

Before, at once you graduate, you are sure of a paid job but now, not anymore. The focus should be on creativity. The more creative you are, the better your chances of succeeding. That’s the reality of today’s society.

I always say avoid too much use of hair removing creams and eventually you will notice that your under arms will start to lighten. These hair removing agents contain acids that can darken the skin.

Get Captivated By - Jerome Onipede

ARE GIRLS WHO MARRY OLDER MEN HAPPY? This is one question so many people ask but not publicly. If you were asked that question, what would your answer be? Maybe, a resounding YES, because of the pictures you see on social media.

And, they’re usually glamorous so, I don’t blame your judgment.

As a personal counsellor, I understand things differently in view of the first-hand life stories/ experiences I hear during counselling sessions. I am yet to meet a girl who married an old man and is happy about it. However, I have met some women whose daughters married older men. Surprisingly, their joy knows no bounds because of the gains/ profits they make from such union.

It always seems like what they couldn’t get from their own husband/marriage, they are able to get from their respective sons in-law, who is usually within the same age group as themselves (the mothers in-law). But what’s the use when the girl in the marriage herself isn’t happy? What makes these girls marry these OLD men?

It’s usually for different reasons. We can look at a few:

So, which “fattening” foods should you be eating?

While it’s a good idea to limit saturated fats (found in cheese, meat, butter, sausage and desserts), you need fat to aid in absorbing fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, E, D and K. Fat makes you feel full for longer periods of time.

The key is focusing on good fats (monounsaturated and poly-unsaturated) and eliminating

Give a man cursed with poverty riches and the devourer will visit him from every side of his life until all the money is gone! The worst part is that poverty always operates alongside sickness and death. I will like to repeat here that ONLY GOD can deliver a man from poverty; not even plenty of money can do so.

2) The second reason we will look at is strong need for paternity. A girl gravitates towards an older man when she never had a solid relationship with her father or never sensed the presence of a father in her life. In her bid to fill that void, she may find herself dating older men and eventually marries one.

3) A third reason may be for power and authority.

Females love men in power because they feel safer around such men. Don’t forget that security means a lot to every woman you will meet out there.

5) The fifth reason could be the diversion of culture by greedy, immoral men. Please don’t be deceived; it is never part of the culture of any tribe in Africa that old men should marry girls. Some men just think that they are powerful enough to get whatever they want. So, you find a king who says he desires a small girl from a particular family for marriage and no one is able to say ‘no’ to him.

You also find some money bags that do the same in a community and it goes on and on. But that does not mean that it is the culture or tradition of such people. It is just a diversion by greedy, immoral men.

Most of them also end up sleeping with the wives of their sons eventually, because these men are willing candidates of diabolical bondage.

Nuts Your best bets for nutrition are almonds, walnuts and pistachios. Almonds are the richest in vitamin E; walnuts contain a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid; and pistachios have lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids – important for eye health. Research shows nut eaters are generally thinner, less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and have reduced risk of heart disease to boot.

In terms of getting the most from your snack, pistachios win hands down. One of the lowest-fat nuts, you get 49 pistachios in a 1-ounce serving, compared to 23 almonds or 14 walnut halves.

Research has shown that women who drink at least two to three glasses of wine a day tend to be more active and enjoy sex more than women who don’t drink at all.

This might sound funny but it’s a fact, phobias are very real and there are people who actually have a fear of wine, this phobia is called Oenophobia.

Cheese and more cheese, where would we be without this delicious dairy product? It has been cultivated into a vast variety of foods ranging from our usual sandwiches to main course meals and wine accompaniment. One of the biggest cheese absorbing foods is Pizza, who doesn’t love pizza, most times one has to visit a local fastfood to procure the mouthwatering snack, who says you can’t make it in the comfort of your own home. Here are two recipes made from cheese one can whip up at home and enjoy.

CHEESY BAKED POTATO SKINS Ingredients • Rosemary • Sweet corn • Parmesan, Chedder and Mozerella Cheese • Coriander • Green, red and yellow pepper • Pear • Tomatoes • Irish Potatoes Directions: Wash potatoes properly then bake for about an hour, scoop centre and put in bowl, mix scooped insides with rosemary, sweet corn , green, yellow and red pepper, coriander, chedder, mozerella and parmesan cheese. Use mixture to stuff potato skin. Finally bake in oven at 180- 190 degrees for 20-30 minutes, serve with pear and tomatoes salad.

CHEESY CHEESE PIZZA Ingredients • 1⁄4 ounce dry yeast • 1 cup water, lukewarm • 1 teaspoon sugar • 3 cups bread flour • 1⁄2 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1⁄2 cup tomato puree • 2 tablespoons tomato paste • 1 garlic clove, minced • 1 tablespoon fresh basil, chopped • 4 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese Directions: Start by making the dough, in a plastic bowl combine yeast, water, and sugar. Stir to dissolve the yeast and leave to rise for 15 minutes. Stir in 1 cup flour, add salt, and then stir in another cup of flour. Place mixture onto kneading board and work in last cup of flour , kneading until dough is soft and elastic, but not sticky. Form dough into a ball. In another bowl, pour in 1 tbsp olive oil and spread around. Coat ball of dough with oil and cover bowl with a damp towel and let dough rise for another 40 minutes. Punch down dough and knead on board about 2 minutes. Dough is now ready to spread in the pan. To avoid sticking of crust, lightly spray pizza pan with olive oil or vegetable oil spray and then work dough to pan (or use free form pan) for a thin bottom crust flatten edges and for thick crust add more dough at edges.

Make your sauce by combining pureed tomatoes, tomato paste, minced garlic, and basil then spread onto prepared pizza dough.

Top with sliced mozzarella cheese and bake at 500°F for 11-13 minutes.

ARE GIRLS WHO MARRY OLDER MEN HAPPY? This is one question so many people ask but not publicly. If you were asked that question, what would your answer be? Maybe, a resounding YES, because of the pictures you see on social media.

And, they’re usually glamorous so, I don’t blame your judgment.

As a personal counsellor, I understand things differently in view of the first-hand life stories/ experiences I hear during counselling sessions. I am yet to meet a girl who married an old man and is happy about it. However, I have met some women whose daughters married older men. Surprisingly, their joy knows no bounds because of the gains/ profits they make from such union.

It always seems like what they couldn’t get from their own husband/marriage, they are able to get from their respective sons in-law, who is usually within the same age group as themselves (the mothers in-law). But what’s the use when the girl in the marriage herself isn’t happy? What makes these girls marry these OLD men?

It’s usually for different reasons. We can look at a few:

The worst part is that poverty always operates alongside sickness and death. I will like to repeat here that ONLY GOD can deliver a man from poverty; not even plenty of money can do so.

2) The second reason we will look at is strong need for paternity. A girl gravitates towards an older man when she never had a solid relationship with her father or never sensed the presence of a father in her life. In her bid to fill that void, she may find herself dating older men and eventually marries one.

3) A third reason may be for power and authority.

Females love men in power because they feel safer around such men. Don’t forget that security means a lot to every woman you will meet out there.

So, you find a king who says he desires a small girl from a particular family for marriage and no one is able to say ‘no’ to him.

You also find some money bags that do the same in a community and it goes on and on. But that does not mean that it is the culture or tradition of such people. It is just a diversion by greedy, immoral men.

Most of them also end up sleeping with the wives of their sons eventually, because these men are willing candidates of diabolical bondage.

Store owner Amaka Ezekwugo established the toy filled store with the aim of catering to the unique play and party needs of children. She explained that she had been in the toy and party packaging business for a while but mostly operated online and opening the AA Party Store became a necessity. The store which plans and organizes parties for both adults and children according to clients specifications, stocks gift items, themed party packs and back to school items.

DJ Cuppy has kicked off her African tour in Lagos, with a party which had an abundance of colour and fun.

Following the release of her latest compilation ‘House Of Cuppy II’ Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola aka DJ Cuppy has launched an 8 city continent-wide tour across Africa. Titled ‘Cuppy Takes Africa’, the ambitious tour which kicked off in Lagos, on August 1, will run through eight countries with a final stop in South Africa.

The Lagos party delivered what it promised, with the best of producers and DJs thrilling the guests with live mixes, compilations, and musical displays of craftsmanship.

Cuppy finally took over the stage. She was bright, colourful and all smiles as she began an orchestrated performance with dancers, and a display of lights. Her father, the oil mogul, Femi Otedola, was in the crowd with Africa’s wealthiest man, Aliko Dangote. He must have cracked a proud smile watching one of the crowning moments of his daughter’s career.

An elder has urged christians to eschew bad morals and live as the bible dictates even in these times of moral decadence.

Deaconess Jessica Uba Uwubanmwem noted that these days people who should show good morals and be a role model to the society are not doing that anymore. The grandmum who launched her book titled, ‘The Ideal Christian’ said that she was inspired to write as a result of her observation and the leadership showed her by her late husband.

Speaking at the book launch held at the GoodSeed Parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God RCCG, Deaconess Uwubanmwem who was part of the 1st model parish of RCCG said that the love of God ought to be our motivations as christian and this virtue has the ability to make life better for people.

The book, Ideal Christian, seeks to promote good morals, love for God and humanity.
