Editor’s Note The entertainment industry has come into its own. Twenty years after the revolution began with Nollywood, every sub-sector of the industry has fanned out; providing superlative income for a demography that would have been restive otherwise.

Today, Nollywood is the third largest movie industry in the world.

What phenomenal growth for a sector that was once vilified for harbouring dropouts and the unserious. The bankable industry is not only making six digits, it is also garnering garlands along the way.

The AMAA is Africa’s version of the Grammy and, for this year, Nigeria alone has five nominees. Great movies that were produced during the year got us a place amongst the continent’s best of the best. Ahead of her trip to South Africa, Pamela Echemunor speaks with the nominees. Go to pp. 8-11.

Some of the fancydancy purses have round or square handles. Some of the bags are soft sided, some are hard sided, and some are just uniquely shaped.

Known as “the royal cloth,” velvet came into fashion centuries ago on the backs of kings, queens and their noble courts.

So, it only makes sense that this Victorian trend would be anchored by a velvet shoe. On the runway, Alberta Ferretti and Dolce & Gabbana sent out embellished high heels festooned with buckles, flowers, brooches and the like.

eteran Actor and quintessential broadcaster, Sadiq Daba, is best known for his well interpreted character in the 70’s television series, Cockcrow at Dawn, which aired on NTA. He is a graduate of Mass Communication from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He is also widely travelled and prides himself on being more of a broadcaster than an actor. The seasoned actor recently grasped our attention when he played Waziri in the acclaimed October One film directed by Kunle Afolayan. This role earned the actor a nomination as “Best Actor”, at the African Movie Academy Awards.

s preparations for the prestigious African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) gets underway, the Nollywood industry deserves a standing ovation for its most recent nominee listings. Director and actor, Kunle Afolayan’s October 1 film alone gained up to eight nominations. Also, actor, director and comedian AY Makun’s 30 Days in Atlanta was nominated for Best Comedy film. Other nominees include; O.C Ukeje, Ini Edo, Demola Adedoyin and Sadiq Daba for various nominee divisions. The event which is scheduled for the 26th of September, 2015, in South Africa promises to be fresh and dynamic, as entertainers from all over the world will be in attendance. Here are the nominees.

How was your experience working on the set of October 1?

The October 1 film had such a beautiful script, fantastic actors and crew. It was a pleasure working on that set, very interesting too.

Congratulations on your AMAA nomination as Best actor in a leading role, for the movie October Onew. How does it make you feel?

Best Actor! Wow!! I Feel great, on top of the world.

What do you think should be done to improve the state of the Nollywood Industry?

The one problem I have with Nollywood is scripting. Stories are most times, mundane with no substance; pedestrian and slapstick. This is in no

way applicable to all. There are a selected few who know their onions, and it’s a dream to work with such people. Directing also calls for lots and lots of improvement, more professionalism. Acting is almost, same, same. What we have now, are not actors in the true sense of the word but phony’s who just gatecrashed in because, there is nothing else to do. They find acting a shortcut to fame.

What project(s) are you working on at the moment?

I’m presently on the set of Hotel Majestic an MNET production for DSTV. What do you think about the AMAA Awards?

AMAA has gone beyond leaps and bounds. This is our very own Oscars and as for the nomination, for me, I consider as winning.

O.C Ukeje I

t’s been a busy couple of years for Lagos born actor O.C Ukeje, who got married just last year and has been seen in quite a number of movies after that. The youthful actor’s rise to fame came after winning the Amstel Malta Box Office reality TV show in 2006. He made his acting debut in 2008 in a movie called White Waters, where he starred alongside Rita Dominic and seasoned actress ,Joke Silva. That same year, he won his first African Movie Academy Award and City People’s Award. His talent has earned him lead roles in prominent movies, working alongside top actors and actresses in the Nollywood and Hollywood industry. He has also been nominated for his role in the movie Love or Something like that as the Best Actor in a supporting role.

Congratulations on being nominated yet again for the AMAA Awards, how does this make you feel?

I feel great to be nominated under the category of Best actor in a supporting role from the movie Love or Something like that.

Your one year wedding anniversary comes up soon, how does it feel being a married man?

On Saturday November 8, 2014, I walked down the aisle with my beautiful wife Ibukun and it’s been a blissful journey so far. The good thing, is she always knew this is what I really want to do and she has been supportive. We both have a good understanding of what we do, and there is no tension of any sort as regards our careers. I am a happy man and I intend to stay like this for the rest of my life. I think my wife has made an honest man out of me. We spoke about the distance between us before we got married. It is something that must be addressed. I do my best to stay faithful to the one that I decided to remain faithful to for the rest of my life. We do our best to stay in

touch with each other every day so that we would know what we are up to. We make sure we stay in constant touch with each other.

How do you joggle your busy career with your personal life?

Basically, I just try to give my best in whatever I am doing without letting one affect the other.

What project are you working on at the moment?

Well, I would say you all should be on the lookout. (Laughs) What do you feel about the AMAA Awards?

For about10 years now, AMAA has been consistent in rewarding the best in African movie and that is a good record. Kudos, to the organizers.

On Saturday November 8, 2014, I walked down the aisle with my beautiful wife Ibukun and it’s been a blissful journey so far. The good thing, is she always knew this is what I really want to do and she has been supportive. We both have a good understanding of what we do, and there is no tension of any sort as regards our careers. I am a happy man and I intend to stay like this for the rest of my life. I think my wife has made an honest man out of me. We spoke about the distance between us before we got married. It is something that must be addressed. I do my best to stay faithful to the one that I decided to remain faithful to for the rest of my life. We do our best to stay in

touch with each other every day so that we would know what we are up to. We make sure we stay in constant touch with each other.

How do you joggle your busy career with your personal life?

Basically, I just try to give my best in whatever I am doing without letting one affect the other.

With a passion for the arts, he went on to study Film Directing at the Central Film School, London. Qualified, he came back to his home country and warmed his way into our hearts with his role in “October One”, getting his first AMAA nomination for Best Young/Promising actor.

Is October 1 your first major film?

Yes definitely the first major one. I’d previously starred in a British short film and a TV show in Nigeria before the opportunity to be in October 1.

Congratulations on being nominated for the AMAA Awards, how does this make you feel?

Well I feel good because it’s what everyone wants really isn’t it? To be recognized for work you did that affected more people than you even know. It’s encouraging for me personally and also on an African level it’s a sign of progress for the whole industry. People are being reached out to across Africa in recognition of their work.

Did you encounter any challenges during the filming process?

In a sense, I did, because everyone else was way more experienced than I. I had to focus on building my character which was quite complicated, and also following the professional protocols of being on a film set, like the schedules, the rehearsals and the stunt preparations. After a short while, I caught on. I’m a very fast learner.

How does it feel for your film, 30 Days in Atlanta to be nominated for the AMAA Awards?

This is a good feeling most definitely. I feel happy that it was something I set out to do and it turned out great. I was just sitting one day and my wife said, “You’ve been doing your stand-up comedy but you are a Theatre Arts graduate and you majored in directing. Why don’t you think of something in line with that discipline and do a movie?” That was what actually gave birth to ‘30 Days in Atlanta’. I feel good that it’s one movie that a lot of people in Nigeria really love. I feel elated knowing that it’s a movie doing pretty well at the cinemas and being rated as number one at the moment. It’s still the most watched movie ever at the Nigerian cinemas. I am glad for the nomination in the best comedy film category.

What challenges did you encounter filming in another country?

Every project has its own challenge. When we set out to do the movie, we said we wanted to achieve amalgamation of two industries, Hollywood and Nollywood and that was it. For me, it’s not just about going to America and you want to take a known actor here to play a role an American actor should play. Then the story wouldn’t have been properly told. It’s a question of negotiation, relationship and some other things that are part of the movie.

We had crew members locally and internationally to make work easier and faster.

BEFORE YOU SAY ‘I DO’ MARRIAGE is an agreement between a man and a woman, to go beyond just being friends and becoming husband and wife in so doing, they take certain vows before witnesses to love one another, to cherish one another and to stay together through sickness and health, for better and for worse.

This agreement includes; sexual faithfulness and a promise that each person will do what they can to make the other one happy. This agreement between man and woman, takes the form of a covenant between not only the couple, but God (who instituted marriage) in the first place. Thus, many marriages are performed within the rites of various churches and religious institutions.

Legally, marriage is a binding contract between two parties that join their possessions, income and lives.

In some countries like Nigeria, the man is expected by Law to be one hundred percent financially responsible in the marriage.

This is always stated by the registrar (at the registry) to the couple during their registry wedding. Marriage is recognized by the state; dissolving the contract can only happen through the legal process of divorce.

According to God’s plan, marriage is the avenue by which children are born; through marriage children have a stable mother and father. The family unit, the

relationship between parents and children, is based on marriage relationship.

Now, for a lot of single women out there who believe that they are advanced in age and say they just want to have sex with someone and have a child of their own if marriage doesn’t happen, you just might still be missing the point. And that is the fact that the avenue for having children is not sex but marriage; a good marriage which provides a stable mother and father for the children. And this is essential for healthy development of children.

Maybe at this point, you can understand why God hates divorce. God does not hate divorce because He hates you the divorcée; He hates divorce because, it has the potential to create more problems than solve problems!

That’s why I always encourage anyone considering divorce to always seek professional counselling first.

And, it doesn’t have to be you and your spouse going for counselling together at the beginning. It can start with you, the one considering divorce, while your spouse may join later.

How much water you actually need depends on your weight, level of activity, the temperature and humidity of your environment, and your diet. Your diet makes a difference because if you eat plenty of water-dense foods like fruits and vegetables your need to drink water will be diminished.

Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Facial Hair There are many natural ingredients available in your kitchen, which can be used for effective facial hair removal. 1. Gelatin Peel-off Mask

Apply it immediately on your face after you remove it from the microwave. * Leave it to sit on your face for a few minutes.

Gelatin sticks onto your face fast. You can apply it either on the areas where unwanted hair growth is visible or on your whole face. * Never apply it very close to your eyes or eyebrows. * You can remove the gelatin mask from your face after 5 minutes as it would have dried off completely by then. * Peel it off completely. You will find that your wanted facial hair and blackheads peel off from your face and stick on to the dried mask.

2. Apricot and Honey Facial Scrub

Apricot is a fruit that is rich in vitamins and minerals and also has rich concentrations of lycopene. It is found to be very effective in removing facial hair.

Apricot has to be mixed with another ingredient honey to make an excellent facial scrub that will help in getting rid of unwanted hair on the face as well as to cleanse the face. Honey has the properties of making your skin soft.

Ingredients • Half a cup of dried apricots • One teaspoon of honey Procedure * Grind the dried apricot in a blender to make a coarse powder. Make sure that it is not too coarse.

How much water you actually need depends on your weight, level of activity, the temperature and humidity of your environment, and your diet. Your diet makes a difference because if you eat plenty of water-dense foods like fruits and vegetables your need to drink water will be diminished.

However, when there is excess growth of hair on neck, chin, on the upper lips, cheeks or forehead and worst the chest, it causes embarrassment and it affects the confidence of the person.

The reason for excess growth of facial hair includes changes in hormonal levels in the body, irregular menstrual cycle, some medications and due to hormonal changes during pregnancy.

The home remedies are the best method to remove facial hair as they are easily available and are without any side-effects. Due to popular demand i delved quite deep in this issue and as a result will be a 3 part issue.

Home Remedies To Get Rid Of Facial Hair There are many natural ingredients available in your kitchen, which can be used for effective facial hair removal. Though it takes some time to show the effect of the treatment, they will not damage your skin and are cost effective. Here are some of the home remedies for removing facial hair.

1. Gelatin Peel-off Mask

One of the easiest and the best remedies to pull off unwanted facial hair in an instant is to use gelatin face mask. This can be easily done at home. Though the gelatin face mask can be a bit messy and smelly too, the result that this face mask offers makes you feel that it is worth trying. You can add a few drops of lemon juice to suppress the smell of gelatin. You can try out a few essential oils as well. It is important for you to keep your eyes and eyebrows away from this face peel-off mask.

Ingredients • 1 tablespoon of gelatin (unflavored) • 2 to 3 tablespoons of milk • Lime juice (3 to 4 drops) (or) • Lavender essential oil about 1 to 2 drops Method In a small bowl, add milk, unflavored gelatin and lime juice or lavender essential oil. Mix them well.

Microwave this mixture for about 15 to 20 seconds.

- IRISH PROVERB * Add honey to this apricot powder and mix it well. * Apply this mixture on your face and leave it to sit for about 5 to 10 minutes. * Now, start scrubbing the mixture in a circular motion gently and make sure that you keep on scrubbing for about 15 to 20 minutes. * Wash your face off with lukewarm water. * Repeat this process two to three times a week for effective facial hair removal.

Remember a little goes a long way.

•Using the Gelatin Peel-off Mask to remove facial hair

Apply it immediately on your face after you remove it from the microwave. * Leave it to sit on your face for a few minutes.

Gelatin sticks onto your face fast. You can apply it either on the areas where unwanted hair growth is visible or on your whole face. * Never apply it very close to your eyes or eyebrows. * You can remove the gelatin mask from your face after 5 minutes as it would have dried off completely by then. * Peel it off completely. You will find that your wanted facial hair and blackheads peel off from your face and stick on to the dried mask.

2. Apricot and Honey Facial Scrub

Apricot is a fruit that is rich in vitamins and minerals and also has rich concentrations of lycopene. It is found to be very effective in removing facial hair.

Apricot has to be mixed with another ingredient honey to make an excellent facial scrub that will help in getting rid of unwanted hair on the face as well as to cleanse the face. Honey has the properties of making your skin soft.

Ingredients • Half a cup of dried apricots • One teaspoon of honey Procedure * Grind the dried apricot in a blender to make a coarse powder. Make sure that it is not too coarse.

It is found that mixture of lavender and tea tree oil effectively helps in curing mild idiopathic hirsutism in women. This means that lavender and tea tree oils have anti-androgenic properties and hence when applied on the face can help in removing unwanted hair.

Process * Mix one teaspoon of lavender oil with 4-6 drops of tea-tree oil * Apply this mixture of oil on facial hair using a cotton ball * Repeat this remedy 2-3 times a day for at least 3 months to remove the facial hair completely.

This delicious vegetable is a favourite among vegetarians and has amazing health benefits such as improving blood pressure, brain function, digestion, detoxification and so on. Cauliflower can be prepared in several ways either as a main course meal or as a starter. Here are two easy recipes that you will love.

SMOKY ROASTED CAULIFLOWER Ingredients • 1 head cauliflower • 1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tsps smoked paprika • Salt Method: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Thoroughly rinse cauliflower, and then cut the head of cauliflower into four quarter slices, each quarter into 6-8 pieces.

Take a pan and place flat surfaces on baking sheet, the flat surfaces caramelize best. The more caramelized, the tastier the cauliflower.

Sprinkle the pieces evenly with 1 tbsp olive oil. Turn florets and sprinkle on other side. Sprinkle the cauliflower evenly with smoked paprika and salt to taste. Be generous with the salt-smoked paprika really sings when it’s combined with salt. Roast for 10 minutes. You will know it’s ready when it’s soft enough to pierce with a fork. Watch cauliflower diligently as it tends to cook fast.

Radio One changed name briefly in 2007 to Choice FM and took on Yoruba language as an additional language of broadcast. It reverted to its old name in 2012. A new dawn started, however, on 4th August, 2014, when the station replaced Yoruba, its second language of broadcast with Nigerian Pidgin English (NigP); and switched from a general format to an all-news, all-talk, all-sports station.
