Four days of all things fashion, decadent and fantabulous. our team of reporters were on hand to bring you first hand reports. starting from yemisi Suleiman ‘s Trends Report on pp 8-9. Too often we tend to under report on what’s trending with men, Jemi Ekunkunbor, takes us through the hip things for men now. see pp. 4-5.

Patterned jackets` The patterned jacket is becoming a big hit with men. It is fast becoming the favourite of most celebrities. Because they come quite dressy, they are now the dress suit for most red carpets events.

The damask pattern is more preferred.

Because they are patterned, wear with a pair of plain trousers in block colour.

The military style camouflage print isn’t falling out of fashion any time soon. So too is green, a less obvious nod to military style. Both the camo and the less obvious green has become an integral part of most wardrobes.

You can find this with clothes or accessories.

The traditional ijaw two piece suit, has taken a modern twist since 1995 when Nigeria returned to democracy. The quest for identity has led leaders to wearing attires from their geopolitical zones.

Today, this two piece suit now Christened the Senator suit, has become popular with both the young and the old from all parts of the country. The new version, now sometimes come designed with pocket square giving it that urbane feel.

It’s easy to infuse green into your wardrobe because it will fit naturally with a lot of the things you already have in your wardrobe.

The double breasted jacket is not an easy item to pull off. Those well versed in style will tell you so. It takes a really stylish person to handle this well.

However, the first rule to wearing one well, is to ensure you get the right size; one that is well fitted. A loose double-breasted jacket will look ill fitting.

One strict rule though, if you are short, stay away from a double – breasted jacket

The Ankara rage is not restricted to the female gender. Men have bought into the look as well and it is fast catching on.

Pair with plain shirt or jacket but ensure your trouser is not too baggy to avoid it looking like a pyjama.

HLFDW: PREVIEWS SHAPE OF FASHION TO COME

nd it’s a wrap for Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week (LFDW) 2015; a remarkable four days of exciting fashion extravaganza, with young designers proving their mettle in the fashion world.

The event, held from 28 - 31 October, brought together local and international designers, stylists, fashion reporters, exhibitors and other fashion enthusiasts who thronged the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, for the biggest fashion showcase across the African continent.

This year’s edition, the fifth in the series, featured outstanding collections from established designers; Tiffany Amber, Mai Atafo, Ade bakare, Lanre Da silva Ajayi, Maki O, April by Kunbi, amongst others. It also featured a good number of emerging designers, with the first batch of four of the 2015 edition of the British Council Fashion Focus, showcasing their talent to the world.

Day one of Heineken Lagos Fashion & Design Week 2015, kicked off to an impressive start with collection of one of Nigeria’s finest; Tiffany Amber. Her spring / summer 2016 collection titled, ‘Marina’ consisted of kaftans, maxi dresses and coloured prints. Woman’s wear designer, Ejiro Amos Tafiri, locked down day two with a collection that is ultra-feminine and chic, bringing back the cape look from last

year, with lots of colour, fluidity, structured pieces and more. Bespoke designer, Mai Atafo, sent models down the runway on day three, with a classic collection of menswear and womenswear pieces, as models strutted the runway to instrumentals and live music by amazing Nigerian Violinist Godwin Strings. Lanre Da Silva Ajayi, closed the show with her Spring Summer, Geometric Fusion which featured her signature elegant, feminine dresses. Lanre added a little sparkle to LFDW with sequins and bright pants, giving the collection an extra spin. Designers from Nigeria other African countries, with their collections, gave a fashion forecast of what to expect next season, with lots of colour, glitters, floral patterns, structured cuts and nudity taking the lead on the runway.

Major highlights this year included, the Heineken LFDW Lounge, the Fashion Business Series aimed at creating support and mentorship for creative entrepreneurs who want to improve their business.

In line with its fifth year anniversary celebration, the organizers of the Heineken LFDW presented recognition awards to deserving personalities who have supported the event from the beginning.

Womenswear Designer of the Year was Amaka Osakwe of Maki Oh, while Menswear Designer of the Year went to Ohimai Atafo of Mai Atafo Inspired. Ejiro Amos Tafiri emerged Outstanding Emerging Designer of the Year. She was presented the award, along with a cash prize of N1Million.

Outstanding Model of the Year went to Kelvin Godson who also received a cash prize of N500,000.

Organised by Omoyemi Akerele of Style House Files, the vision for the Lagos Fashion and Design week which debuted in 2011, is to provide on-going support to designers via education, mentorship as well as opportunities to present their work to a larger market, with a fundamental vision to position Lagos as a global destination for Africa’s finest fashion design talents. A feat which has been remarkably achieved by the organizers of the show, that has over the years become a landmark event in Africa.

dia Aisien is a Nigerian/ Cameroonian model, TV personality and philanthropist. At a young age, her parents imbibed in her the spirit of giving back to the community and helping the less privileged. With her passion for philanthropy and her love for fashion, Idia took on the world, working in places like Fox 5 News, the United Nations, the AARP Foundation, and the Foreign Policy Initiative. She is well travelled and well read, with an M.S. in International Public Relations and Global Corporate Communications from New York University. She is currently the host of Spice Tv’s “Style 101”. In this interview she talks about her work and her passion for helping the underprivileged.

What was growing up like for you?

I have a lot of siblings, so there was always a lot of love and laughter in my house. I am also the last child so I was verypampered, but was lucky to have so many elder ones that I could learn a lot from.

What inspired your need to help the underprivileged?

My parents were always very kind to people, and I watched them do a lot of volunteer work from a young age.

My father gave mostly to church projects and projects in his state, while my mother was the president of the Lion’s club and she was always traveling to aid the underprivileged. My sisters and I spent most of our birthdays and Valentine’s days at an orphanage in Lagos.

So I have always felt a deep sense of responsibility in helping others.

When did you start modeling?

In the fall of 2012.

Why did you choose to go into presentation as opposed to chasing a career in business?

It was more of a calling and not a choice, because I am more of a creative person and I’ve always been passionate about fashion and entertainment. When the opportunity came to work in television, I jumped at it immediately.

What does fashion mean to you?

For me fashion is a language or an art that very few people are gifted to understand. I love print, fabric,

colours, lights, and cameras. But most of all, I love the ability to say who I am using any of these media and very few words. When I was much younger, I would always dress up and strut around my room, so all the opportunities I have had, no matter how small or big, to model and work with people in fashion have meant the world to me.

What is your wake up beauty regime?

Meditation and Green tea: These days without my quiet time and space, it’s hard for me to get in my element, or get anything done during the day.Green tea is also my own little way of staying clean and it really helps my skin glow.

Do you have a diet plan you adhere to?

I honestly eat whatever I want, but I stay away from anything with a lot of salt and sugars. I’ll sometimes do a detox to cleanse and rejuvenate, and when I’m looking for a weight fix, I go high on fibre and proteins.

What snack or meal are you addicted to?

I’m addicted to snacking on almonds. They’ve become my new crave. I also have a never-ending love affair with bread.

Tell us about your show “Style 101”: Style 101 has been a great platform for me, because I’ve got to meet so many people in the fashion and entertainment industry. I work with one of the most talented producers, Dami Idowu, so I’m looking forward to more controversial and exciting episodes! I guess being the new fashion judge and jury in town also gives me an automatic stamp of approval on all my outfits- I hope.

Do you still model?

Yes! And I’ve worked with a couple of designers recently, which I’m extremely excited about.

You sound passionate about Africa, what projects are you working on towards the development of Nigeria and Africa?

I am excited to be launching in January next year, a foundation that focuses on education and poverty

alleviation in Nigeria. It’s a special project for me, because I have worked with a lot of groups focused on Africa, but I can finally take ownership of my own mission and use everything that I have learned from the past successes and failures of different projects. I’m also partnering with various groups inside and outside the country, and my foundation’s projects are tailored to help tackle each country’s most prominent issue.

What is a day like in your life?

I start off my day with meditation, followed by music and hitting the treadmill to help me think. During the day, I am always busy and on the run, if I’m not shooting Style 101 or You’ve Got Issues, I’m doing interviews, fashion shoots or working on my own media and foundation projects. I love to unwind with a book in the evenings, watch a movie or go out for a drink with friends.

You have worked with big corporations like Discovery Communications, Fox 5 News, the AARP Foundation, and the Foreign Policy Initiative. What would you say you took from your experiences with them?

Working for a lot of big corporations has made me very business minded and also well rounded in the media and communications field. Although I am now working in fashion, I have gained invaluable skills and learned a lot about myself and what I want in my life and career.

What is beauty to you?

Beauty to me is having a strong sense of self love and awareness. It’s also about taking care of yourself, staying true to your identity, and being unapologetic. I’m not a big fan of wearing too much make up or doing a lot with my hair and clothes, I feel beautiful when I’m simple, and when I’m very happy— because it’s contagious!

Do you exercise?

According to Cedric Bryant, chief science officer for the American Council on Exercise, strength training strengthens muscles as it creates a layer of muscle underneath the skin. As a result, your skin will become tighter. It is recommended that you perform strength training three times per week every other day in order to really benefit your muscles and skin. Weight training is especially important if you have dropped your caloric intake significantly, as when you lose fat, you often lose muscle as well. Rebuilding your muscles will help tighten the skin.

That food schedule is far too much if no form of exercise is being done. Here is a suggestion: Breakfast: Fruits, quaker oats + 1 slice of toast wheat bread (brown bread).

Alternate the quaker oats with cereal or just stick with oats.

At work: Nescafe 1 or 2 (maximum) cubes of sugar with some milk.

Lunch: (must be before 2pm): Moi moi or beans and little plantain, (less carbohydrates like rice unless its Ofada which can be 2ce a week) amala and vegetable soup Dinner: (latest time to eat dinner 6.30pm) and you need to walk around your street briskly for 10minutes before eating dinner it makes a difference.

Options for dinner: pepper soup (fish and chicken only no red meat at night) with 1 slice of wheat bread or on its own.

No soft drinks or alcohol at all, freshly squeezed fruits (not pack juice) and at least 8 glasses of water everyday.

The whole idea is to eat the heaviest meals in the earlier part of the day. So if you know you can eat a your lunch late like 4pm and no you won’t have any dinner at all just have pepper soup or herbal teas or a salad and some fresh vegetables.

I suggest you take up a sport for the weekends, swimming, squash, tennis or just go jogging or walking (30 mins) saturdays and sundays. You will start to notice a different. Let me know how you get on after 3weeks and if no difference I’ll then suggest a more aggressive pattern.

Quality Medicare: In the fight against Cancer The month of October has been marked as breast Cancer awareness month all over the world. To that effect, Medical practitioners all over the world, are uniting to spread awareness about this plague, as well as combat it to the best of their abilities. Dr Mrs. Abimbola Holloway and Mrs. Elizabeth Akin Abiola partnered with other experts to build Quality Medicare International, which is a health institute geared towards creating awareness, providing quality health services and improving the health sector in Nigeria. In this interview, they talk extensively on cancer and how they’re contributing to the fight against the disease.

Her working experience spans over 33years, starting with an internship at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and her National youth service year at the Lagos Island Maternity. She joined the family group of clinics as a medical officer in ownership capacity and became the medical of the group in 1988 till 2003 when she voluntarily retired. She is currently a director in Quality Medicare International and Care Companions Limited.

You recently opened a diagnostic centre, tell us about it.

Yes, we recently opened a health screening and a care centre.

The health company is Quality Medicare International and the Care Company is Care Companions Limited. My partners are Mrs. Elizabeth Abiola, Dr Renu Hans and Mrs. Iyabo Ladipo. The Quality Medicare, is involved in providing health screening packages for different needs and we do referrals both locally and internationally. The Care companions Limited, provides professional care for the elderly, those with chronic illnesses and those medically challenged.

October is marked all over the world as the breast cancer awareness month. How would you assess the prevalence of cancer, in particular breast cancer in Nigeria?

Yes, the month of October has been set aside to draw attention to breast cancer awareness for quite some time now, and it has helped to increase awareness about the disease and also educated the public on prevention by regular screening, treatment and lifestyle changes. The statistics on the incidence of Cancer worldwide is that 1in 3 of the population, will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime. This is not exclusive to breast cancer. I do not have the statistics for Breast cancer in Nigeria, but there were nearly 1.7million cases of breast cancer worldwide as at 2012. I believe the statistics is very high in Nigeria and continues to escalate due to ignorance. Lack of awareness of the disease and all kinds of pre-conceived notions of illness such as spiritual and cultural beliefs.

I would advise that those females above 40years should have yearly Mammograms, Cervical screening. A comprehensive screening that will include blood tests such as Lipid profile, Diabetic screen and Heart check is also advisable. A colonoscopy every 3 years to screen for bowel cancer. For men above 40years they should check their prostate health yearly by having their PSA test done, Digital rectal examination and Prostate scan and do the yearly comprehensive health assessment and colonoscopy as mentioned earlier.

Do you plan to go into full hospital services in the future?

For now our services are complimentary to the Hospitals.

However, we may follow the practice in UK and open Nursing Homes equipped to provide more intricate Health care under supervision of Medical Specialists.

What is the difference between the services you render and that of other centres in the country?

The difference is that our services are unique in that we provide personal health screening services tailored to the needs of our clients. Our services do help in early diagnosis of illness. We also do pre-employment and domestic checks; the screening packages are Diamond, Gold, and Silver categories.

You also offer care giving services. Are you planning it along the same line in Britain?

Yes, in as much as providing care services to the elderly and vulnerable people. The difference is that, in Britain, the government takes the bill after going through means test; whereas, in Nigeria, we are yet to get to that stage/level. Individuals take care of their bills.

However, as you just heard from my colleague, we hope the NHIS would be developed to the level of practice in Britain.

rs. Elizabeth Abiola is a Law graduate of University of Hertfordshire, London. She is an Arbitrator, Mediator and Human Resources Consultant.

Her work experience spans over 30 years, beginning as a secretary with National Electric Power Authority and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). She voluntarily retired from NPA and worked for Source Smart Ltd, UK, an import and export trading company.

She later set up her own training consultancy business, specializing in management and human resources development. She is currently Chief Executive Officer of KVL Trainers, co-ordinating the entire courses in different disciplines. She is a director at Quality Medicare International Ltd and Care Companions Limited.

The NHIS was launched recently. Are you on it and would you say it is successful?

No. We are not enrolled on the NHIS since we have just started operations. I cannot comment on how successful the scheme has been since we have not enrolled with them.

How can women help save their lives when it comes to cancer?

I think women can help save their lives when it comes to cancer by knowing their body and being aware of how it functions. When they know their bodies well enough, they are able to know when there is a change from what is normal and this leads them to seek medical assistance to have it investigated early.

With regards to breast cancer, it is important for women to get to know their breasts by examining them regularly by themselves. Also, to try, as much as possible, to reduce daily stress as most of these chronic diseases have been associated with high stress levels.

– Planning for the rainy day We all know that life happens and the unexpected expenses are expected. It could be a job loss, wedding of a family member, natural disaster, death, illness etc. For example in 2012, there was a nationwide strike, where all citizens in Nigeria stayed at home for about a week. It would have been a different story if it lasted for more than 1 week especially for those Nigerians that depend or survive on what they earn on a daily basis. I remember in 2008 during the credit crunch, a lot of people lost their jobs globally. A friend of mine who had a very good job in one of the world’s top investment banking firms lost her job. She didn’t see this coming. How was she supposed to survive if she hadn’t planned ahead of time?

There is a bible verse that says “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences”. (Prov 27:12). This is very apt. Anything can happen at any time. This is life and that is just the way it is. Ask yourself a few tough questions: What would happen to you and your family, if you lost your job today? What if you discovered you had an illness that could not be treated in Nigeria and you would have to go out of town? What if the bread winner in your home suddenly develops an illness and is required to stay at home for a while?

What is an Emergency Fund?

According to Investopedia, an emergency fund is an account that is used to set aside funds to be used in an emergency, such as a loss of a job, an illness or a major expense. Most emergency funds are highly liquid which allows quick access to funds which is vital in emergency situations.

An emergency fund could either be short-term or long-term. A short term fund is more liquid than a long term fund for example a savings account while a long

term fund would be invested in money market funds or fixed income funds.

How to create an emergency fund Typically financial planners recommend that your emergency fund should be able to cover atleast 3-6 months of living expenses. For the purpose of this exercise we would assume 6 months.

1. The first thing to do is to determine what your monthly living expense is made up of. This is easy if you budget on a monthly basis. If you do not have one you would have to create one by first of all tracking your spending etc. Please check my blog and read up on previous articles on budgeting.

2. Once you determine your monthly living expense, the next thing to do would be to multiply it by six to determine the minimum amount that your emergency fund should contain. So for instance if your monthly living expense is N100, 000, your emergency fund should be a N600, 000.

3. Determine how much you can afford to put aside each month to set up an emergency fund of N600, 000. This would depend on your monthly income and expenses as well as the deadline you set for yourself to have an emergency fund. So for instance you can decide to set aside N30, 000 each month towards your emergency fund. This means it would take 20 months to build up your emergency fund.

7 Foods that will Age you fast Food is something the human body cannot live without.

There are various categories of foods ranging from carbohydrates to fats and minerals. Knowing how to balance these foods is key, and not everything called food should be consumed especially as one gets older. There are specific food categories that have a negative effect on the health and may shorten ones’ lifespan tremendously.

Here are a few foods to cut back or cut off from.

1. SUGAR Sugar consumption usually leads to a process called glycation. Glycation is a process whereby the sugar combines with other compounds such as proteins leading to the secretion of substances known as advanced Glycation end products (AGES). These AGES may damage your skin’s collagen which is a protein that keeps the skin looking youthful. Not only is it harmful to the skin, it also leads to tooth decay.

2. CHARRED MEAT Charred meat may be delicious to the tongue, but it does more harm than good. Most times, the black char contains pro-inflammatory hydrocarbons, which could present a problem since inflammation breaks down the collagen in your skin. If you must consume grilled meat, ensure you strip the meat of char and clean the grill properly after use to avoid consuming contaminated leftovers.

3. PROCESSED MEATS Processed meats include sausages, bacon, corned beef etc. Many of these meats contain preservatives and sulfites which can trigger inflammation in the skin and accelerate the aging process. Red meat in general is very dangerous for the heart. It leads to heart disease and digestive problems. Swap red meat for fish which is high in amino acids and minerals.

4. TRANS. FATS Still on the issue of heart disease, trans fats have been highly attributed to the disease.

They’re not just bad for the heart, but for the skin as well. Trans fats promote inflammation plus, the unhealthy fats make the skin vulnerable to damage from the sun, which is the number-one cause of aging.

Many food labels contain the tag “0g trans fat,” these products still contain under 0.5g of the artificial fat. Ensure you avoid products that contain hydrogenated oil on the ingredient label too.

5. SALT Salt is another dehydrating agent. Salt has been highly attributed to high blood pressure and kidney disease. Salt also interferes with the bone’s metabolism.

6. CARBOHYDRATES Consumption of carbohydrates in large quantity tends to reduce collagen production and reduce fiber in your skin.

SODA Sodas are very high in sugar, they don’t only dehydrate the skin, they cause fatigue.

According to research, every human being should consume at least half their body weight in ounces. Avoiding sugar packed beverages is imperative; this includes sugar free sodas and sugar substitutes like artificial sweeteners.

ENERGY DRINKS They say a healthy liver means healthy skin, and as the body’s largest and most visible organ, the skin requires optimal care and protection from the inside out. Energy drinks are highly acidic and although they give one the energy of a young child, they have a not-so-youthful effect on your teeth and not-so-friendly effect on your system. If you must consume, take at minimal levels.

7. FRIED FOOD Fried food is exposed to a large number of chemical reactions which put the skin at high risk of inflammation and collagen breakdown in the skin. Regular consumption may cause the skin to wrinkle and get worn out.

The event, the fourth in the series, hosted by Kings Communications Limited, publishers of Maritime Management Series (MMS) weekly, is aimed at celebrating women of sterling qualities and character in the society as role models, while building capacity, providing learning opportunities, business re-engineering and information sharing.

Theme for this year’s ceremony was ‘Capacity Building: Evolving a Viable Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative’. According to Kingsley Anaroke, Chief Executive Officer, Kings Communication Ltd and convener of the event, the theme was inspired by the need to impart entrepreneurial spirit and self-reliance skills in women.

Mr. Anaroke stressed that this year’s theme was aimed at discussing with and getting government agencies and corporate bodies to dedicate some percentage of their CSR funds or other loose funds to equip their female employees for retirement challenges and taming corruption in the work place as well as ensuring better home management.

Held at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Media Centre, Iganmu, Lagos, the event opened with a panel of discussants who x-rayed the theme. Yemi Sanni, the CEO of Mazars Consulting and Yemi Sanni & Co (Chartered Accounatnts), marked his 40th birthday recently at the ARK event center in Lekki, Lagos.

The event was graced by very distinguished personalities amonst whom are top financial sector experts, politicians, business executives and top businessmen.

Tributes came in torrents in appreciation of a man who has touched many lives. The event was masterly anchored by Uti Nwachuku and Helen Paul.
