Celebrities shine at the American Music Awards It was all glitz, glam and phenomenal dresses on the red carpet at the 43rd Annual American Music Awards which held at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The event which was broadcast on ABC network, was hosted by actress and singer Jennifer Lopez. Singer Jared Leto presented a eulogy mourning the November 2015 Paris attacks. And big winners of the night included; One Direction as artist of the year, Ed Sheeran as Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist and Taylor swift who went home with awards in three categories. Here are some of the best dressed ladies at the event.

The hottest couple on television, Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello, said the big “I dos” at a lush ceremony surrounded by family and friends at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida recently. The curvaceous bride, looked absolutely stunning in her custom-made Zuhair Murad gown with a detachable train.

Sophia’s 22 year old son, Manolo, walked her down the aisle looking dapper as they made their way toward her handsome groom. The reception hall was decorated with beautiful flowers hanging from the ceilings and also had in attendance, some of the Modern Family star’s colleagues and other celebrities including Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Hyland, and Channing Tatum with his wife, Jenna Dewan Tatum.

Pitbull was also on ground keeping the guests in high spirits all through the event. Sources say Joe and some of his “Magic Mike” colleagues entertained the bride with some of their teasing moves.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge climb for charity

Recently, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate, showed off their adventurous sides during a wall climbing exercise on a visit to an activity centre in North Wales, with the aim to highlight charity work focusing on young people’s mental well-being. Earlier in the day, the royal couple visited The Towers Residential Kate lowering William down the wall Outdoor Education Centre, located in Snowdonia National Park, where children from Holyhead High School had joined the mountain rescue team for a day of activities.

The Duke and Duchess were on home turf, having lived in Anglesey as newlyweds when William worked as an RAF search and rescue pilot. “I love it here. I really miss being here, being outside and in the mountains,” said the Duchess.

They later on changed into more suitable attire to join representatives of Mountain Rescue England and Wales, for a climb at the Towers Residential Outdoor Education Centre in Capel Curig, of which the Duke is patron.

Both colours towed head to head in the fashion industry in Nigeria and in some cases, it was a combination of teal and coral.

HOW TO WEAR Coral is one of those colours that you can wear both during the day and at night. Because coral dresses have their own vibrant aura, you don’t need to heavily accessorize. You can wear coral as a bag, a blouse, a belt, a pair of earrings or as a clutch bag. You can also wear coral as a pair of shoes or a statement necklace.

But if you are wearing coral as a dress, to look fabulous, you can combine with other interesting colours such as teal, brown, black, red or royal blue.

Wunmi-Oluwadare I like coral because it is a colour that cuts across any other colour. It can work with just about any other colour.

I look at coral as a very natural colour and if I have to wear coral, I don’t think I will want to wear it as a dress. I will wear it as accessories instead.

Derived from the typical pinkish-orange colour of many red coral gemstones, coral is a softer version of orange and in some cases the most beautiful shade of red. Coral is both soft and strong at the same time.

A great colour for summer, coral can easily blend well with many other colours. And regardless of your skin tone, it can be worn by most people because it is both a warm and cool colour combined.

This beautiful colour, is one that can get you a lot of mileage. Very interestingly, is that it can be worn in a variety of ways, either as a colour for your clothing or, if you just want to experiment, as an accent to update your wardrobe.

Funmi Ajila Ladipo I will go for coral. It goes very well for both dark and light skinned people. And you can wear it with practically any other colour. Coral is rich, it is an expensive colour.

If I have to wear coral, I would like to wear it as a dress because the colour is so awesome.

fter winning the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN) competition in 2011, Sylvia Nduka’s life changed for the better. The young entrepreneur, runs an astounding hair line company, called Sylvia Hair Gallery. She also runs an NGO called Sylvia Educational Foundation, aimed at assisting young people in their educational endeavours. In this interview, she talks about life after MBGN and how things have changed for her since then.

time. That made me feel fulfilled. So, my prize money was well spent and I’m happy and thankful for the opportunity.

What was your PET project and what achievements have you accomplished with your title?

My pet project is called Sylvia’s Educational Empowerment Development (SEED). Setting up SEED was an achievement for me and through seed, I was able to sponsor the education of many young girls. I hope to do more in the nearest future.

Would you say your life has changed drastically since MBGN? Of course, it has. A lot of things have changed in my life. It has been so amazing and I’m grateful to God for everything; without Him, I don’t know how I would have gone through everything.

How is SEED doing?

We are doing pretty well. You know I have passion for education. A lot of young people benefit from the foundation. I have about twelve of them right now.

What inspired the foundation?

My grandmother; She told me she had always wanted to go to school, but she never had the opportunity. She used to tell me that back in the days, they used to call her an illiterate. In fact, her husband once called her illiterate and that hurt her so much. So, she insisted that the best I can do for her and myself, is to go to school and help those who want to go to school but don’t have the financial support to actualize their dream; And that desire of my grandmother has stayed with me. So when the opportunity came is seized it.

What beauty regimen do you keep?

People underestimate the value of water. It keeps you healthy. I believe if you are healthy you’ll be beautiful from the inside out. So in a nutshell, I drink a lot of water, I eat well and try my best to exercise.

How did it feel winning MBGN in 2011?

It felt really good, and I am enjoying every bit of it. It was a shock initially, but in a good way. It opened a lot of doors and presented a lot of opportunities for me which I am very grateful for.

Tell us about your family and growing up?

I come from a family of five, I am the last child.

My father is a pure disciplinarian and my mother acts like his assistant (laughs). Growing up for me was a lot of fun. As the last child, I was truly loved and well taken care of, although my parents loved us all equally.

Can you tell us how you spent the prize money?

I contributed towards the cost of surgery for a 2-year old girl who had a medical condition at the

How did Sylvia’s Hair Gallery come to be?

Hair has always been my thing. I love how it can transform your look. In 2011, I identified a niché in the market for high quality hair that would also be affordable. And being a student once myself, I knew how expensive good hair could be. So I focused on developing hair that would be affordable for students and also luxurious at the same time; hair that women from the upper echelons would also be interested in. And so Sylvia’s Hair came to be.

How is your Sylvia Hair Gallery line working out for you?

Sylvia’s Hair Gallery is doing very well thankfully.

We recently added more products to our collection of hair. One product which I’m really excited about is called “Beauty Queen” ,it’s currently in the market. It’s affordable, luxurious and most importantly it’s of high quality. This product was developed carefully for university students and people of good taste.

How would you describe your personal style?

I have always said this and it hasn’t changed, my mother is a great inspiration to me regarding my style. Growing up I always remembered my mother being very stylish, my sisters and I were always in awe of her outfits and always taking cues from her when it came to style and tasteful. I learned a thing or two from her growing up.

I believe if you are healthy you’ll be beautiful from the inside out.

What does beauty mean to you?

Beauty means so many things to me. Beauty is confidence, beauty is also happiness, beauty is also believing in yourself and knowing you can do anything you put your mind to. I believe that ladies that exhibit these traits are beautiful. This is what makes me beautiful.

What is it like being a young female entrepreneur in Nigeria?

It’s not an easy task. There are challenges but being in business is also a beautiful thing that requires a lot of hard work.

Do you still model?

I still model, but not as much as before.

How would you describe your style?

I’m a very simple person. I don’t like drama. I keep things very simple.

Would you say you have influenced anyone positively with your status as a Nigerian youth and entrepreneur?

I feel I have influenced people positively simply by working hard. My work ethics will inspire others who come from humble backgrounds. I want to especially believe I have influenced the girl child using my foundation. And because I have a successful business, I was blessed enough to start this organization which among other things, sponsor young girls and women, enabling them to either complete their education, or return to school.

I’ve always held the strong belief that knowledge is indeed power. Not only are the young women and girls sponsored, I also offer one-on-one mentoring sessions where I let these ladies in on my inspiring life stories. My aim in doing this, is to inspire and influence them positively to do more and better.

What is your diet like?

Well in the family where I come from, we are lucky with size. My mum is only size 12. I eat anything at anytime. I don’t have a particular time for meals. I also exercise once or twice in a week.

What item would you never be caught dead with?

Artificial teeth, the gold teeth ones (laughs).

What item do you splurge on most?

I would say red lipstick, I absolutely love it!

What are the three things you can’t do without?

(Laughs) Hmm my phone, sunglasses and handbag. These three are paramount for every lady on the move.

aughter of front line Politician and Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Yeside Laguda, recently in Lagos launched a luxury bridal store as well as a ready to wear evening line. The pretty mother of two who is a walking advertisement for what she does, holds a degree in environmental chemistry from the University of Reading and an MBA in Strategic Management from the University of Wales, England.

The avid reader, travels to several fashion capitals of the world to stock her shop with affordable luxury dresses and fabrics.

In this encounter at her Lekki store, she talks about her “My Q Lifestyle brand” and more.

My Q Lifestyle, is two stores in one: the bridal called Blush by My Q and the other MY Q by My Q. My Q Lifestyle is the parent store born out of my passion for sewing: but you know how fashion is done in Nigeria, where people bring you fabrics to sew. But what I realised after a while, was that that didn’t work for my work life balance. So I decided to do something else which was to go into the bridal line because the bridal industry pushes fashion in Nigeria.

When there is high wedding season, there is a lot of work and when there is no wedding season there is no work.

So I got franches and because I cannot afford to be partners with a lot of big houses like Vera Wang, I go through a secondary market which is a a bridal store in London and say this is what I want to do, this is my budget and they give me at the price they would sell. So we are just trying to cut out the middle man. So if you have your dress, we have veils, tiaras and we have purses. Its a full bridal store.

My Q on the other hand, stocks indigenous dresses, the ankaras, kaftans suited to our climate and our women’s sizes. So its two companies under My Q lifestyle; MY Q and Blush by My Q. What labels do you stock?

With the bridal, I carry about 13 labels; Vera Wang, Maggie Sottero, Monique Lhuillier, Zac posen , Olegcassini, St Patrick Etc. With the evening dresses I do a lot of middle

It’s been good How do you get your fabrics?

I go everywhere for fabrics; Vietnam, India, Paris etc.

Did you set out to map out your market?

No. It was organic. It was gradual. We started and we would fall and we would stand.

Does the bridal cater to both faiths?

Yes. Modesty cuts across and it is preached in both religions and if you are a Moslem or a Christian, however you want to get married, the watch word is modesty. What your priest will accept, your Imam will also accept.

Between classic and trend, which would it be for you?

Both.

How has your life in fashion been?

It’s been good so far. It’s also been a learning curve. If I try something today and it doesn’t work, I try again and make it work and to get grace out of the situation. I love waking up to clothes. I love beautiful things. So it’s been a fantastic experience.

What won’t you do for fashion’s sake?

A lot. For me, making myself useful is more important. I do have good work ethics if I say so myself. So I am more of a business person than a fashionista.

So what do you like to wear?

Anything that makes me look elegant.

So what’s trending?

Right now, we are getting a lot of demand for Princess dresses which is very surprising.

Does your individual style reflect in your pieces?

Yes. I always say that My Q woman knows herself. We follow trend but we don’t follow it blindly. I am Moslem and of a certain age, I can’t sew or wear just anything.

I believe in modesty, respecting oneself and one’s body. My style is a bit mature.

WHITE WINE GRAPE VARIETIES White wine comes in a number of varieties. The variable natures of the wine can be highly attributed to the type of grape they are made from. Chardonnay, gewürztraminer, moscato are white grape varieties which can either be made sweet, sour, bubbly or still.

Here are some tongue tingling white wines and grapes from which they are made.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay became extremely popular in the 1990’s. Chardonnay originated in Bourgogne, France and grape from this region used to produce chardonnay is grown with success in most viticultural areas under a variety of climatic conditions. Yet, it only amounts to 2 percent of the world vine areas. Chardonnay can be made either sparkling or still.

Pinot Grigio

Pinot Grigio is planted extensively in the Venezia and Alto Adige regions of Italy. Pinot grigio is also grown in the western coastal regions of the U.S.A. Most dry wines with good acid “bite” are typically made in Italy and Germany. Oregon or Alsace Pinot Gris shows aromatic, fruity flavors. / December 6, 2015

Moscato

The moscato variety, belongs to the muscat family of grapes. Moscato grows in most vine-friendly climates, including Italy, the Rhône Valley (where it is called muscat blanc à petits grains) and Austria (where it is called Muskateller). The Moscato wine exhibits grapefruity and musky aroma and is easily recognizable to anyone who has tasted a Muscat table grape.

Sauvignon blanc

Also of French origin, sauvignon blanc is grown in the Bordeaux region where it is blended with Semillon.

The Loire valley and New Zealand produce some excellent sauvignon blanc varietals. Some Australian Sauvignon Blancs, grown in warmer areas, tends to be flat and lack fruit qualities.

Semillon

Sémillon is also known as Hunter (River Riesling).

Sémillon is also grown in Chile, Argentina, Australia, and California.

Sémillon is the major white grape in the Bordeaux region of France and is often blended with sauvignon blanc to delimit its strong berry-like flavours.

Riesling

This German grape of the Rhine and Mosel, riesling, grows in all wine regions. Germany’s grand Riesling wines are usually made slightly sweet, with steely acidity for balance.

Riesling from Alsace and the Eastern U.S. is also excellent, though usually made in a different style, equally aromatic but typically drier. Rieslings should taste fresh. If they do, then they might also prove tastier and tastier as they age.

Mushroom deliciousness

Mushrooms are highly nutritious vegetables. They contain Protein and a wide variety minerals like, Iron, Zinc and Manganese, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus, Potassium, Copper and Selenium and are very low in Cholesterol. They are also a good source of Dietary Fiber. Mushroom can be cooked as a main meal or accompaniment, and they are absolutely delicious.

Here are a few fantastic and healthy mushroom recipes to consider.

SHRIMP AND MUSHROOM LINGUINI WITH CREAMY CHEESE HERB SAUCE Ingredients • 1/2 pound cooked shrimp • 2/3 cup boiling water • 3/4 teaspoon dried basil • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley • 1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1/2 cup butter • 1/2 pound fresh mushrooms, sliced • 1 (8 ounce) package linguini pasta • 2 tablespoons butter • Olive oil Method: Pour about two measuring cups of water in a pot and add 2 half tea spoons of water to it and allow to boil. Add linguini and olive oil, cook for about 7 minutes until tender, then drain. Heat 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add mushrooms; cook and stir until tender, then set aside. In the same pan, melt 1/2 cup butter with the minced garlic. Stir in the cream cheese, breaking it up with a spoon as it melts. Stir in the parsley and basil.

Simmer for 5 minutes. Mix in boiling water until sauce is smooth. Stir in cooked shrimp and mushrooms; heat sauce through. Toss linguini with shrimp sauce and serve.

MUSHROOMS WITH A SOY SAUCE GLAZE Ingredients • 2 tablespoons butter • 1 (8 ounce) package sliced white mushrooms • 2 cloves garlic, minced • Ground black pepper to taste • 2 teaspoons soy sauce Method: In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar until light and fluffy for about 5 minutes. Beat in mashed bananas, apple sauce, milk, olive oil and vanilla. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt. Stir flour mixture into banana mixture, whisk until well blended.

Preheat oven to 160 C. Fold in smashed walnuts (depending on preference). Line a baking tin with olive oil, and lightly dust with flour. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for about 1 hour, until golden and a cocktail stick inserted into centre of the cake comes out clean. Turn cake out onto a wire rack and let cool.

In a bid to demystify the misconception about beer consumption and its health benefits, Nigeria Breweries, held its annual Beer and Lifestyle symposium, as part of the on-going Positive Story of Beer, (PSOB) held at the Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island Lagos. The event featured inspiring lectures from speakers, Scientists and Nutritionists who all spoke on the theme for this year’s symposium; ‘Beer and Lifestyle.’

Speaking at the event, Scientists and Nutritionists, Dr. Henk Hendricks, a biologist and project leader in the Institute for Food and Nutrition in The Netherlands, submitted that moderation level of beer consumption is beneficial to cardiovascular health. According to Hendricks, some of the inherent advantages of beer include: Low percentage of alcohol; large quantities of water; its role in rehydration; a good source of minerals; a good source of polyphenolic antioxidants; contains anti-inflammatory xanthohumoles; and a large variety of raw materials, including gluten-free’ rich in fibers. He averred that Beer contains low concentration of alcohol and a large number of additional ingredients that are associated with health. These include, amongst others minerals, vitamins and polyphenols. Hendricks concluded that while risk reduction is additive to other healthy life style factors like non-smoking, physical activity and a healthy diet, moderate alcohol consumption fits in a healthy life style “There is evidence that moderate alcohol consumption may be associated with better cognitive function in old age, he said.

Also speaking at the occasion, Mr. Tony Agenmomen, Senior Strategy Manager, Nigerian Breweries, listed the strategies for moderate drinking to include: Spacing drinks; alternating alcoholic drinks with water; avoiding drinking games; learning to refuse drinks as well as drinking slowly. In his address, the Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries, Mr. Nicholaas Vervelde restated the company’s resolve to telling the rich and positive story of beer is tied with a strong commitment to the promotion of responsible consumption.

ACCESS WOMEN NETWORK/ GENESIS HOUSE ‘END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN’ By - Yemisi Suleiman

In commemoration of the United Nations Day to end violence against women, and as part of its strategies to empower women in the community, a network of women within Access Bank, ‘Access Women Network’ in collaboration with Genesis House held a Public Lecture recently to raise awareness of violence against women and girls in the society.

The event brought together speakers from different Foundations, including former House of Representatives member, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa who was keynote speaker. The session saw exchange of ideas amongst women on best practices, and ways to connect with key stakeholders to identify innovative approaches towards solving this problem which has gradually become an endemic part of many cultures. In his opening remarks, Herbert Wigwe Group Managing Director Access Bank PLC, noted that Gender violence is one of the most pervasive violations of human rights in the world. “Sadly, it is also one of the least prosecuted crimes. I am talking about violence against women and girls. I think we can all agree that the time for action is now” On her part, keynote speaker, Hon.Abike Dabiri Erewa said as we mark the violence against women day, this year is different because we now have a law in Nigeria to deal with the issues of violence “the Law is all encompassing, gang rape or individually, is 20years imprisonment, no option of fine and the victim can also get financial compensation.” The law she informed, deals with issues of widowhood, battery, female genital mutilation, incest amongst others.

“We have taken a major step forward, and it is now left for us to make it work. As we mark the day, it is time to speak out against violence against women, the same way we have spoken out against different issues such as HIV.” On the way forward, Hon Abike said it involves a lot of advocacy, “let people know that the law exist and the culture of silence has to be dealt with. The inspector General of police plans to have a desk in every police station, strictly for reportage of violence against women, again that will help and we take it from there.” She noted that the issue of violence against women is a problem that has taken a shocking dimension in our country; adding that Nigeria records one of the highest rates of violence against women anywhere in the world- something Amnesty International described as a pandemic”.
