Editor’s Note A few days ago, I watched a man walk down the Lekki Express Way in nothing. Nudity was his normal. ’Oh what a noble mind here o’er thrown’ , shakesphare says of Hamlet.

The guy on the express may not have been a noble prince, but he was very mad . Which explains his walking around in his birthday suit. If we forgive his affront, how should we deal with Miley Cyrus’ nudity at the MTV VMA’s?

The American music star has consistently pushed the enevelope in acceptable public conduct. The only difference between Miley and the Man in question, was the one inch band that covered her nipples, and the silver fringe accross her pubic area.Yet, for the thousands at the venue, Miley was an enchantress.

The cavorting going on in some parts of the western world is akin to babarianism. A period, where excessive freedom, allowed every lewed conduct; nudity, open sex of all hues and shades. The only thing remaining is beastiality; that would soon be a matter of choice, on the road freedom is leading. Bishop Mike Okonkwo says of these happenings, ‘its the signs of the endtimes’ Trully, Sodom and Gomorrah, could not have matched today’s excesses.

Bishop Okonkwo turns 70 today, and the worldwide TREM congregation have rolled out the drums to celeberate papa’s day. The revered man of God, took us on a journey down memory lane. r. Mike Okonkwo, presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, TREM, is 70 years today. With over 160 branches in Nigeria and across the globe, the revered man of God continues to proclaim God’s goodness and winning souls for the Kingdom of God. As he clocks 70, the septuagenarian, in this interview, relives some of his childhood memories, life at 70, challenges over the years, his view on same sex marriage and the state of the Nigerian nation.

Congratulations on your 70th birthday today. How does it feel to be 70?

I feel great. I feel happy and excited that, by the grace of God, one has been able to get to the age of 70. For me, it’s a blessing. I am really grateful to God. A lot of people attribute good looks to exercise and diet.

I would attribute it to God. Yes, I do exercise but just a little. Some people really stress themselves, doing all kinds of things. I found out that this does not guarantee and so I do a little exercise. What I do mostly now is play table tennis. I also like to swim but I am not so sure of the swimming pools in this country and I do not have a private one.

I play table tennis two or three times a week. As for food, I eat everything. I eat carbohydrate. They say don’t eat red meat. I eat red meat. So, I wouldn’t say it is because I have been careful with my diet. It is not true; it is God’s grace upon my life.

What role did your wife, Bishop Peace, play in all this?

She played a wonderful role. I cannot thank God enough for the type of wife that He gave me. I know that some people say that for the fun of covering up but I am being honest. I didn’t think that we would have been able to achieve the much that we have achieved over the years. One of the things that we understood and told ourselves from the beginning is that, as a man of God, I am not just husband to her but also to every woman in the church and a father to every person. If you have a wife that does not understand this part and is possessive, it will destroy your work.

For me, I don’t know how I would have survived if, every day, we were fighting. Then, the huge responsibility that I have in the church won’t be addressed. I have an understanding wife who people would go to and be thanking for something she didn’t know I did. You know that kind of thing; something you didn’t even remember you did and somebody going to her and thanking her for it. Then, she would know that I have done another one and she would not quarrel about it.

If it is someone that likes to rage and fume, you are in for it. In addition, she has helped to cover some of my own weaknesses. She is good at knowing people, knowing their names individually and reaching out to them when I am not there.

Let’s take you back to the year you were called by God. What was the reaction of your parents to your calling?

They were angry with me. They couldn’t understand it. I was working in a bank and had a bright future; the then African Continental Bank which started at Martins Street, close to the headquarters at Broad Street. To worsen it, of all places, it was a

Pentecostal church, which to them, was Aladura.

They were very angry. They felt that if I wanted to answer the call of God, I should go to Anglican or Catholic Church; the orthodox churches. At a stage, they went to arrange policeman arrest me but I was resolute. The ministry started growing; we were not even in the headquarters then. We were still at Akoka, Lagos. As time went by, they were able to see the greatness in what God wanted me to do.

What challenges did you encounter in the process of running the ministry?

There are several challenges, for each step that you need to take. Gradually, one challenge would lead you to another one. There is no end to challenges.

The first challenge was when I lost my first child. I got married to my wife in 1980 and had our first daughter in 1982. We went for a crusade in 1984 in Abeokuta, Ogun State. We came back just before Christmas and our daughter sang that day in the children’s choir. In the night of that 25th December, something happened to her.

I was going to preach the following morning; after praying, the girl refused to get up and that was it. The next day, I went to where I was to preach and never mentioned what happened to the congregation. To me, the young baby died. That was one challenge.

Then, my immediate younger brother who was the only support I had; he had an HND from one of the polytechnics in the north. He was to go and study Medicine but my parents refused to send him to school; the punishment was for supporting me in ministry. God, however, gave him opportunity and he qualified as a medical doctor. Then, he joined me again and continued to support me as one of our worship leaders.

On one of those days, I travelled out and gave him an assignment to come back to the church to conduct an interview on my behalf. That was when armed robbery was beginning to rise. Some armed robbers came to him inside the church and told him to bring the key of the car. To cut the long story short, he was shot and they started battling for his life. Eventually, he couldn’t make it and he died. It was very devastating.

I made up my mind that the best that I could do was be the best in what God has made me to be.

Everything that I have done has been by faith.

Up till now, we still depend on God for every project. When the church started to grow, we had no place to go to and we started carrying our programmes to the stadium. We were eventually directed here; it was not the kind of place that you want to build on. It was water logged and we would stand at the hill and be pointing at this place.

The big question then was: ‘how would it happen?’

But again, the Lord built His house. It’s a work of faith.

They were angry with me. They couldn’t understand it. I was working in a bank and had a bright future; the then African Continental Bank which started at Martins Street, close to the headquarters at Broad Street. To worsen it, of all places, it was a

Pentecostal church, which to them, was Aladura.

They were very angry. They felt that if I wanted to answer the call of God, I should go to Anglican or Catholic Church; the orthodox churches. At a stage, they went to arrange policeman arrest me but I was resolute. The ministry started growing; we were not even in the headquarters then. We were still at Akoka, Lagos. As time went by, they were able to see the greatness in what God wanted me to do.

What challenges did you encounter in the process of running the ministry?

There are several challenges, for each step that you need to take. Gradually, one challenge would lead you to another one. There is no end to challenges.

The first challenge was when I lost my first child. I got married to my wife in 1980 and had our first daughter in 1982. We went for a crusade in 1984 in Abeokuta, Ogun State. We came back just before Christmas and our daughter sang that day in the children’s choir. In the night of that 25th December, something happened to her.

I was going to preach the following morning; after praying, the girl refused to get up and that was it. The next day, I went to where I was to preach and never mentioned what happened to the congregation. To me, the young baby died. That was one challenge.

Then, my immediate younger brother who was the only support I had; he had an HND from one of the polytechnics in the north. He was to go and study Medicine but my parents refused to send him to school; the punishment was for supporting me in ministry. God, however, gave him opportunity and he qualified as a medical doctor. Then, he joined me again and continued to support me as one of our worship leaders.

On one of those days, I travelled out and gave him an assignment to come back to the church to conduct an interview on my behalf. That was when armed robbery was beginning to rise. Some armed robbers came to him inside the church and told him to bring the key of the car. To cut the long story short, he was shot and they started battling for his life. Eventually, he couldn’t make it and he died. It was very devastating.

I made up my mind that the best that I could do was be the best in what God has made me to be.

Everything that I have done has been by faith.

Up till now, we still depend on God for every project. When the church started to grow, we had no place to go to and we started carrying our programmes to the stadium. We were eventually directed here; it was not the kind of place that you want to build on. It was water logged and we would stand at the hill and be pointing at this place.

The big question then was: ‘how would it happen?’

But again, the Lord built His house. It’s a work of faith.

•Bishop Mike Okonkwo Let’s share some of your experiences, especially before your call. Can you relive some of your childhood memories while growing up?

My father had been in Lagos for a while before we joined him. When we moved to Lagos, we were living in a place called Brickfield along Apapa Road. I was schooling at Ijero Baptist School and as the years went on, my father, a disciplinarian, felt that I needed to leave home and live with someone.

We were a bit comfortable; he was a senior civil servant at P&T (Post and Telecommunications). He retired there eventually.

He moved me first to Offa, in 1957, to live with an uncle at Offa Grammar School; that was when the school was starting. Then, I moved on to Mayflower Grammar School, Ikenne, under Tai Solarin.

I was at Mayflower for two years and there was peer pressure and the fact that I did not speak Igbo very well, friends began to taunt and bore me. So, I had to tell my parents that I wanted to change school. I changed school to Merchant of Life School, in the East and that was where I graduated in 1963.

All this while, they made sure that we were going to church. I was in the choir at St. Jude’s Church, Ebute-Metta, Lagos, with my sister.

My father was a much disciplined man; he helped a lot of people but didn’t believe in bribes.

He would warn you that people are going to come to the house and bring turkey, bring drinks to the house and that you must not receive them. As a young boy, you want to receive and keep them. If my father caught you, you were in trouble! He would ask you to go and return them.

When and how did your turn around happen?

My turn around happened during the (Civil) War. I worked at the Ports Authority, at the Lagos and Apapa ports, just for a few months. That was between January and April. The kind of things that I saw there was frightening; the way money changed hands! I was not comfortable and I told my brother that I needed to change jobs. Eventually, it was arranged for me to work at African Continental Bank (ACB) and I had another experience there. I believe that is why we have the kind of society you have today.

I was a cashier and was always counting money.

One day, I went for lunch at the Marina and this fellow followed me. He said that he had some money that was counterfeit and he wanted me to help change it and we would share the money. I said no! I wouldn’t do anything like that and I ran. I was so afraid that somebody was hearing us. When the war intensified, people from eastern extraction were afraid. I asked for transfer and I was transferred to Onitsha and the war kept going. Thereafter, the Civil War intensified. The Nigerian troops conquered Onitsha and we moved to Awka; from there to Port Harcourt. At that point, different branches of ACB were moving; eventually, we came to Owerri.

By then, Dr. Iloh was in charge of the Red Cross. I stayed with him for a few months. The war intensified and I was afraid they were going to capture me on the streets to join the army because that was the norm.

When I found out that I could not escape it, I told my parents that my brother and I have to willingly go and register in the military. So, we did. The training went on for three months; throughout the period, we never fired one shot. After the third month, we got a pass to see our parents. That same day, we were told that they were moving us to the force headquarters and to Gabon for further training since Gabon had recognised Biafra.

They distributed riffles and bullets to us but I told my brother that he should not take the arms and ammunition. He asked why and I replied that he should follow me. We went back through the gate by which we came in and the sentry was there. He sensed that we wanted to run but we told him that one of the officers left his clothes half way and he sent us to get the clothes. Surprisingly, he agreed. As soon as we got out of the gate, we disappeared into the bush.

The next day, the war ended while every person sent to war the day we escaped from the headquarters was killed!

Those who were alive did whatever they wanted like smoking, womanising and all kinds of things. That was the turning point in my life. Since then, every step I took has been a miracle.

What are your views on same sex marriage?

The church should not be shocked about this because, they are part of End Time events. Don’t also be surprised if other strange things follow. I won’t be surprised if bestiality is introduced. I will only be shocked if the church gets involved in it. If nations endorse it, nations don’t go by the Bible. They play politics. Parents must talk to their children and let them know that that is not the right thing.

What is our view on the state of the nation?

I have always said that God’s hand is upon Nigeria. If not, it would have stopped existing long ago. God has a prophetic hand upon Nigeria. It is not an accident, irrespective of our different challenges and contradictions. Whether the devil likes it or not, Nigeria is going to be great.

That is the level we have degenerated to. It is unfortunate calling Buhari Mr. Go-slow. How do you want him to come and clear the mess of 16 years in two days? I don’t know why we are never truthful with ourselves. If the only thing Buhari can achieve is to instil fear of corruption and all the machinery of government and agencies are working to dissuade corruption, then we would have achieved a lot.

How is life with the Bishop?

Life with Mike Okonkwo is an interesting one but not without challenges. Since I married him about 35 years ago, God has really been our helper all the way. I told you that there were challenges; we had our own share. But the Bible says we should look onto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.

And, because we agree, we overcome. The Bible says if two will agree, many things shall be done.

We always stand in faith, trusting God to help us.

Throughout these challenges, God has really been our helper and he has seen us through. I will say that it has been 35 years of God’s faithfulness helping us; helping us in the ministry and at home.

He has helped us thus far, to be able to bring up our daughter. In the next few months, she is going to get married so, God has been good.

What was it that you saw in him that you liked?

The first time, I didn’t like anything because I felt that he was arrogant because of his family background. The first time, I thought to myself, what is wrong with this young man? Why is he cocky?

What was is it you like about the Bishop as a person?

Bishop will defend you anytime. He loves me.

He stands for me. He will not deny you when the chips are down. He will stand for you when he knows you are doing the right thing.

I know he likes to cook. He will also teach you how to do it. It is so funny that he came from a background where they were about six boys. They always had people who lived with them, who did all the cooking. I don’t know how he learnt how to cook this vegetable soup.

There was a day he said, “Let me teach you. “ He is a funny person. To play a game with Bishop, you will fall on the floor (laughing) while playing with him; especially Ludo game. If he is the one winning, just resign to your fate. He will make you laugh in such a way that you won’t feel bad losing.

How much interest do you take in how Bishop appears outside?

Bishop is very stylish and he can put things together. My daughter tells me that if I want to buy anything for her, her father must see it first. I don’t really care about fashion; all I know is just wear

How do you cope with your husband’s absence most of the time?

My schedule has increased but I know that he has to go and be used by God. That is what gives him joy and I want him to be happy.

How do you advise women in your church on seeking God’s face while looking for life partners?

I advise them to like the person and when they start praying, certain things will happen and God will lead them. ( Like, we were quarrelling all the time in that church and he found out that he is so fond of me). Don’t allow anyone to tell you this is your husband.

What are your family values?

In the family, I believe that a husband and wife should see things the same way and there should be an altar in the family. The way things are going everywhere, it is difficult for people to have a family altar. A family that prays together, stays together.

Training of the children is very vital. You must pray about their schools and other things.

Can you talk about people you admire in the ministry?

The ministry started when there was no woman as a pastor. We started the women ministry. There was no mentor then. Now, there are so many ministers. We have Mama Idahosa, Mummy Mercy, Rev. Roseline and so many others but we pioneered female pastoring ministry.

What is your take on single parenting?

It is not biblical and it is not right. If you find yourself in such situation, we can’t condemn you.

he quest to be a wannabe often drive men and women to dress up looking ridiculous.

No matter how expensive a bag is for example, if it is not well used, may make the carrier look funny.

Being a stylish person is not a product of how much your dress costs or whether your bag is an ‘IT bag’. Pilling on one designer dress over a pair of designer shoes does not make one stylish. Doing this is tending towards being a fashion victim. When you leave your label out clearly for people to see, you are a fashion victim. Most guys are guilty of this. They leave suit labels on the sleeve just to show off expensive brand names.

When it comes to fashion and real style, never over do things. Less they say is more. You’d look loud and bogus if you pile things on. It becomes even worse if the person is not coordinated in appearance and attitude. There is no doubt that dressing too much especially when the occasion does not call for it could put one off.

The reason for excess growth of facial hair includes changes in hormonal levels in the body, irregular menstrual cycle, some medications and due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. Though there are methods such as shaving, laser treatment and waxing available to remove facial hair, they may be painful, time consuming and may cause damage to the skin. The home remedies are the best method to remove facial hair as they are easily available and are without any side-effects. There are different methods for hair removal and the pros and cons of these methods are discussed below. This will give you the information why home remedies are a better option for facial and body hair removal.

THE VARIOUS METHODS OF HAIR REMOVAL (PROS AND CONS) WAXING Pros - This method can be done at home or from a beauty salon. It is an easy and inexpensive method. The person can remain hair- free for a long time as this method removes hair from its roots. There are latest waxing options such as chocolate and mango waxing, which are comparatively painless.

BLEACHING Pros - Camouflage the hair and make them less visible.

You can make the hair color to match your skin tone and hence unnoticeable. You can do it by yourself and the effect stays for a few weeks.

Cons - This will not remove the hair completely.

Exposing the skin to sunlight within one hour after bleaching can cause skin irritations. Bleaching is not solution for women with thick hair growth. Regular bleaching can cause skin damages due to the presence of chemicals in the bleach.

LASER HAIR REMOVAL Pros – This is one of the safest and most effective

Eggs are high in cholesterol so except you are under 21 years of age when you are most active to burn off, I would say 2 eggs a week maximum, preferably egg whites as the yolk is what’s high in cholesterol. Eba is a heavy meal, having said that eating it for breakfast is entirely optional, but may be best to eat after noon (12pm) and before six pm. Keep writing in!

MYTHS ABOUT WHISKEY There are many myths about whiskey. With its profound historical background, whiskey has often been confused with so many other spirits; just as well as there are many other fallacies about this special spirit. Here, we uncover the popular myths about whiskey.

WHISKEY AND BOURBON ARE DIFFERENT

Whiskey is the umbrella, a standard term for all spirits under its banner. Bourbon, Rye, Irish, Scotch, and Sour Mash are all examples of different types of whiskey. They are all whiskey and they are all a little different.

AGE EQUALS QUALITY This myth has been debated over time. The truth is that research in this area is yet inconclusive. Older whiskies are usually better but not all the time; there is a limit to how long a spirit can age.

If kept for too long, the spirit loses its original character and the taste becomes overpowered by flavours of the tree it originally came from; although, in most cases, consumers feel more confident about paying for aged whiskey.

WHISKEY SHOULD BE DRUNK STRAIGHT

One walks into a bar and orders whiskey on the rocks, meaning with ice and soda. It should be enjoyed in any way the consumer pleases, whether naked or with accompaniment.

Hola amigos, if you can take the heat and you love spicy delicious food; the tasty taco is your go to snack. The tasty taco is a spicy delicious Mexican snack that tickles the taste buds with its crunchy deliciousness.

SALSA Ingredients • 5 pieces fresh tomatoes • 1/2 red onion • 1 jalapeño chile Juice of one lime • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro • Salt and pepper to taste • Pinch of dried oregano (crumble in your fingers before adding) • Pinch of ground cumin, more to taste

It may not contain any added substances aside from water and plain caramel colouring and may be harmful to people with allergic tendencies.

PALE WHISKIES ARE NOT AS GOOD AS DARK WHISKIES

This is a very common misconstruction: colour is an indicator of quality.

Various brands adopt a wide number of techniques to darken their products. But pale whiskies are more vigorous than dark whiskies because they are closer to their natural state.

Method: Chop the tomatoes, chiles, and onions. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and hot water after handling jalapenos and avoid touching your eyes for several hours. Set aside some of the seeds from the peppers. If the salsa isn’t hot enough, you can add a few for more heat. Place all of the ingredients in a food processor only a few times, just enough to finely dice the ingredients, not enough to pulverize. If you don’t have a food processor, you can finely dice by hand. Place in a serving bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add some more chopped tomato if salsa is too hot. If not hot enough, add a few of the seeds from the chilies, or add a little more ground cumin. Let it sit for an hour for the flavors to combine.

TACO Ingredients • 1 pound ground beef • 1 (18 ounce) package restaurant-style tortilla chips • 3/4 cup water • 1 (18 ounce) package tortilla chips or regular chips • 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese, or more to taste • 1 (15.5 ounce) can baked beans • 1 cup salsa, 1 cup sour cream or more depending on you • 1 (10 ounce) can pitted black olives, drained and chopped • 4 green onions (Spring onions), diced • 1(4 ounce) can sliced jalapeno peppers, drained • 1 canned taco seasoning mix Method: Cook and stir ground beef in a sauce pan over medium heat until meat is flaky and cooked for about 5 to 10 minutes. Drain excess grease. Stir in taco seasoning mix and water and simmer until beef mixture has thickened for about 8 to 10 minutes. Set the oven rack about 6 inches from the heat source and preheat the oven for about 5 minutes. Line a baking saucepan with aluminum foil.

Spread tortilla chips on the prepared baking sheet; top with Cheddar cheese, baked beans and ground beef mixture. Broil in the preheated oven until cheese is melted, watching carefully to prevent burning for 3- 5 minutes. Top nachos with salsa, sour cream, black olives, green onions, and jalapeno peppers.
