he fashion industry in Nigeria has come into its own. Thanks to all the runway activities, we can now comfortably say that Lagos is the new fashion destination in Africa.

We seek in this week's Fashion Edition to focus on the players: the industry experts whose input combine to make a great show the designer, whose creativity drives the fashion fervor, the models, the hair stylists, the make-up artists, the stylists and the style writer. We have put all of them together to highlight their roles in the fashion revolution sweeping through the land. In “We Are in Fashion”, each gave an insight into their place in the industry.

Our cover is London-based designer, Mimi Hassan, who, smelling the scent of money, al a the patronage of Nigerian designers, side by side international designers like Emillio Pucci has set up shop in Lagos. Mimi, who already has a cult following amongst Nigeria's celebs, tells in a chat with Allure, the secret behind her phenomenal success. See pp. 6&7.

he fashion industry is globally known as big business, employing millions, boosting economies, setting trends and creating a force that one can hardly ignore. Everything from the way you dress, to the colors you choose, the styles you favour and even the music you listen is in some way influenced by those in the fashion industry. More specifically the Nigerian industry, where we exist is coming out gradually spreading its tentacles and changing things. Ten years ago, the sum total of 'sewn' garments in our closets were aso-ebis

lovingly put together by the neighbourhood tailor or the ever popular xmas 'cloth' that mummy would purchase and ensure was sewn before the d-day. Today, all of that has changed. Fashion has expanded and in doing so empowered many creatives in the industry. Some people might ask, who are the people in fashion apart from the fashion designers that have exploded onto the scene?

Well, we agree that fashion designers are an integral part of the fashion industry but in addition to them we have stylists, make-up artists, hair and skin care

professionals, nail technicians, models, fashion photographers and fashion writers as well. In between all this creatives I may have neglected to mention a couple of others but now you get the picture of the different parts that make up the fashion whole as we know it. For your reading pleasure we've asked a few people from the industry to share with us their thoughts on the growth of the Nigerian fashion industry from their unique perspectives

IMADE NGBEWI — MODELWinner Nigeri'a's Next Super Model 2011 Give us a brief about yourself I am from Edo State, Benin to be precise. I come from a Good background. We are nine of which I am second to the last.

Why did you decide to apply for N.N.S.M...?

I always say that I was a lucky girl, because I never applied for the contest in the first instance. Mrs. Joan Okorodudu saw me at a fashion show and she asked me to join mid way through the contest for the top 25 Did you have any Experience before then?

No, I did not have any experience in modeling until I joined NNSM...

A lot of changes have happened to me., since I became a model. I get to drive my own car around. I traveled to South Africa for the African Fashion Week last year; I traveled again last week for Gambia Fashion Night Out. Some girls look up to me now, because they want to be like me 'that is really great', getting interviewed….. I traveled recently to London, South Africa and Dubai . From your experience, how will you discuss the model industry in Nigeria and South Africa?

The modeling system in Nigeria is really bad, because from my little experience, they pay models in Nigeria peanuts, which is not right. However, modeling in SA is great; they pay well and treat models with the utmost respect...

have worked as a stylist across all areas, music, advertising, and, fashion shows, editorial, portfolios, celebrity styling.. etc But I wasn't satisfied so I took few courses as a Creative Director/Stylist I learnt the major roles of a creative director and creative stylist -which is to get a unified look for, a magazine, a department store, a photo shoot, media company or clothing line.. etc . .The job of creative director is bigger and more important than any one task on a show, or set, A creative director's role is to manage the creative process and shape the creative brain of the entire show and build a creative conscience. Ability to network and work with, large, diverse groups is another necessity, particularly on overseas trips, which throw you together with strangers twenty-four hours a day There are so many magical moments ,working for the first time ever as a Creative Director on a show, it was amazing. I really loved being involved in these pure creative choices that affect what happens on a catwalk and that is the part of my job now that I love and value so very much Nigeria, as a country is growing and so is her fashion industry. Every Nigerian has suddenly become fashion conscious, following trends religiously. Now, as somebody who studied, follows , and sets trends I would say the role of a creative stylist/director has really taken off in our society. Years back we didn't care much about fashion, nor the way we portray it on television ,in our editorials or on our runways, but toady we are paying attention to details and giving creative minds in Nigeria the chance to show what they can do.

ecently makeup and hair have become synonymous with the fashion industry in Nigeria. Fashion Designers, Editors and Event organisers are now realising the importance of Makeup and Hair when it comes to showcasing designs, models or fashion event. In my opinion hair and make-up are the most important elements in a fashion show or photoshoot because if you have beautiful makeup and hair, the outfit /model will look perfect.

In most cases when organising a fashion event, Hair and Makeup collaboration are usually the first to be concluded before models and designers. As they form an integral part of the event and there must be complete understanding of the clients requirement by all parties involved and it is absolutely imperative that everyone works as a team. So that makeup and hair complements the event and does not detract from it. Hair and makeup aesthetic form an important part of how designers communicate, tell a story and create an identity for their brand.

For every fashion show there is always a hair and make up test, It's important to see how the whole look comes together. You usually have a moodboard that inspired the designer's collection and you might also have a separate moodboard for hair and makeup. The right hair and make up can change everything, so it's really important to know what look and feel is right for a show.

Blush has partnered with several designers, events and magazines, including Lanre Da Silva, Sunny Rose, Elite Model Look, Vanguard and TW magazines. In fact more and more Nigeria makeup and hair companies are now partnering with events, fashion magazine, celebrities and designers as it is an important part of brand recognition and awareness. Nollywood star Stephanie Okereke for instance has just signed an endorsement deal making her the new face of Kanekalon hair, we are seeing more endorsements like these in Nigeria.

I have also noticed that there the focus is now on what is happening behind the scenes. There is more extensive documentation on the goings-on backstage at fashion events and photoshoots. Consequently, it is easier to predict coming trends based on the very colours and products showcased on the catwalk or magazines. These in time end up at cosmetics' counters. So make up and hair trends are important in themselves as the trends and influence that we see in fashion shows and magazine eventually transcend into everyday life and have become important accessories like shoes and bags.

Above all with the growth of our fashion industry, it means that existing makeup artists and stylists are improving their skill set and new talents are coming through. This has produced another service industry which in turn has created employment for many talented Nigerians.

here has never been a better time to be involved in the fashion industry in Nigeria. Globally African fashion has never been so hot, with international fashion houses looking to Africa for inspiration and trends. I genuinely believe that the Nigerian fashion industry is at the head of this movement mainly because of the savvy and sophistication of the Nigerian consumer.

How do we in the magazine industry support the fashion industry? It's simple really we provide a platform for our designers to showcase their work. Every fashion shoot is an investment by us in the industry. Getting the right photographer, model, stylist, makeup artist and hair people together with the sole reason of creating something beautiful and inspirational with their clothing. Then we take the liberty of hand delivering it straight to potential buyers.

At TW magazine we go a step further with our First Look section; this space is dedicated to giving new designers a place to present their work.

It may seem frivolous to some that I spend my days writing about trends and what not to wear but fashion is a form of art. For an individual it's form of expression and for other its a business. Like most businesses in Nigeria it suffers from inherent infrastructure issues which unfortunately mean that most of our highly talented creatives may never meet their full potential. In the meanwhile however we will continue to write about who got it right and support the cause in our small way.

The Mimi Lee London brand is expanding its horizons and is about to open a branch in Lagos Island’s Lekki Phase One. She has a long list of Nigerian celebrities who wear her label. Omotola Jalade Ekehinde, Waje, Goldie, Yvonne Vixen Ekwere, Jumai Shaba, Stephine Uche, Tiwa Savage, Eku Edewor, Lami Philips, Layole and Omowumi Akinifesi have all worn Mimi Lee London wears YOU ARE A NIGERIAN DESIGNER BASED IN THE UK SO, WE REALLY DO NOT KNOW MUCH ABOUT YOU OR YOUR COLLECTION. SO, LET’S START WITH YOU. WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND AND WHEN DID YOU START DESIGNING? I’m Nigerian of course! I lived most of my teens and early twenties in the UK and parts of Europe.

Unfortunately, I speak English only and a tiny bit of French. And, I understand when spoken to in Yoruba and Hausa.

I started the label, Mimi Lee London, in 2009. Since then, it has only grown from strength to strength.

WHAT’S YOUR DESIGN CONCEPT AND WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS? Our design aesthetics mainly focuses around the ethos of jet-setting London ‘it’ girls. They have a very dramatic and ostentatious sense of style that determines their mood and what sort of adventure they could be up to.

For instance, a ‘Mimi Lee London’ girl is off to Cannes Festival in France. She will adorn a luxurious silk printed kimono maxi with sunnies as she soaks up the sun on a yacht. Then, off to a gala in a one-off haute couture piece.

WHAT’S THE UNIQUE THING ABOUT YOUR DESIGNS? HOW OFTEN DO YOU COME OUT WITH A CAPSULE COLLECTION? Hmmm... I would have to say as much as the designs are inspired by places I visit and things I see. There is still a common thread of rebellious tailoring that has become a signature in every collection.

We tend to release two collections a year but took a break in 2011 to develop certain aspects of the label.

However, this year (2012), there is going to be an extra Autumn collection as there will be a new atelier/couture collection which will be produced exclusively in Milan and Florence, Italy. It will be distributed by my new Italian-based partners and fashion label - Florentina Rose.

The atelier/couture collection will be previewed in Milan first and then Paris, New York, Dubai and then Japan.

I am so excited because, I will also be producing some of my own textiles in the new Spring collection. They will feature special Mimi Lee London prints. We will launch those in Spring next year.

Mimi Hassan, head designer of Mimi Lee London is a luxury atelier label with a celeb cult following. The label is inspired by ethos of a jet-setting London ‘it’ girl and her story through fashion. With sales territories in Europe and the Middle East, the brand is rapidly gaining recognition as the ‘haute’ under the radar label to be seen in. Mimi Lee London has participated in the Holland Fashion Week and done a number of presentations in Italy, Dubai and the United Kingdom. It has agents and distributors in Dubai, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Italy and Holland.

The Mimi Lee London brand is always an element of surprise with a blend of bespoke haute couture garments for celebrity clientele and the more mainstream collection that comes in two extremes: a soft chiffon drapery side and a rebellious futuristic edgy tailoring side.

HAVE YOU BEEN DESIGNING FOR NIGERIANS? IF YES, WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS? HOW HAS THE RECEPTION BEEN THUS FAR? The label has been widely received by a lot of celebrities here in Nigeria. I would love to name drop a few but we try to keep our clients’ list very confidential.

HAVE YOU HAD A COMING-OUT-LAUNCH OR ARE YOU PLANNING ONE IN THE NEAR FUTURE? We are launching an Island Showroom on 26th of May,

2012 at Ladipo Omotosho Cole Street, Lekki Phase One, Lagos.

I’m very excited as I get to spend lots of my time here, almost half of the year, and eat lots of Nigerian food, which I always crave when I’m abroad.

WHAT’S YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE FASHION INDUSTRY IN NIGERIA? THERE MAY NOT BE ANY COMPARISON BETWEEN NIGERIA AND BRITAIN BUT LET’S TRY AND MAKE SOME. SO, HOW DO THEY COMPARE? Wow! Nigeria is definitely up and coming in fashion. Everyone is their own fashion designer with the help of tailors. Like every other industry, the UK market is very competitive. You have to be very strong on design technique, detailing and finishing. I think Nigerian designers are slowly but surely starting to raise the game on technique.

DO YOU THINK THAT THE BFC PLAYS A PROMINENT ROLE IN THE PHENOMENAL GROWTH OF BRITISH FASHION?

You have to be very strong on design technique, detailing and finishing. I think Nigerian designers are slowly but surely starting to raise the game on technique.

British Fashion Council does more than play a role. It is British fashion! You can’t talk about a fabulous painting without mentioning a Picasso. They know how competitive global fashion is; when you talk of Parisian and Italian fashion. They are doing a very good job propelling their home-grown talents on a global scale; especially, when you talk of new generation runway that gave birth to global giants like Christopher Kane and Alexandra Mcqueen (may his soul rest in peace).

HOW DO YOU THINK NIGERIA CAN GROW ITS OWN? I think by organising Nigerian designers’ collective shows like the ‘Arise Fashion Week’ in New York, Africa Fashion Week in London and New York Franchise.

They will give visibility to Nigerian brands on an almost global scale and build confidence in fashion enthusiasts worldwide to book a ticket and come down to Lagos/Nigeria fashion weeks.

DO YOU SEE POTENTIALS FOR A MONEY-SPINNING INDUSTRY? Hmmm... Yes and no... Yes, if you specialise in a particular niche market! And no, if you try and be a jack of all trades. It will take a toll on your quality control. I learnt the hard way.

YOU HAVE PARTICIPATED IN SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL FASHION WEEKS. HOW WAS THE EXPERIENCE? An adventure really! It’s like venturing into the unknown. But, when it’s all over and you get good reviews, you feel happier and relaxed. Mission accomplished.

YOU HAVE OUTLETS AS FAR AWAY AS HOLLAND, DUBAI AND ITALY IN ADDITION TO THE UK. HOW DID YOU ACHIEVE THIS PHENOMENAL SUCCESS AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE? With the help of a brand management team that believed in me. Goretti & Frances are like my family. They fight hard to get me into shows and showrooms abroad; they make sure all the ‘i’s are dotted and ‘t’s are crossed on every distribution contract!

Her enthusiasm over the forthcoming trip was completely dampened.

Today, lots or female executive travel solo, on business trips. It's exciting and empowering but one has got to be extremely cautious. Here are some tips to make your business trip safe and enjoyable.

Research your destination, so as to get a cultural and social perspective.

Never admit into your room, anyone that you've not invited nor requested through the front desk. Be wary about someone approaching you to ask for the time check his wrist for a wristwatch.

A mobile phone is key, to keep important numbers handy. Be careful with your mobile phone. The bottom line here, is that you should do your research, be fully aware of your surroundings at all times and put your best foot forward.

s people try to eat more nutritiously and add fish rich in omega-3 to their diets, sushi continues to grow in popularity. These compact little rolls certainly look nutritious and taste delicious. Sushi is a Japanese food consisting of cooked vinegared rice (also called shari) combined with other ingredients (like neta). Forms of sushi presentation vary, but the ingredient which all sushi have in common is rice aka shari. The most common neta used is seafood.

Originally, sushi arose out of a way of preserving food. Fish was placed in rice and allowed to ferment, which allowed an individual to keep the fish edible for some time. The rice was thrown away and the fish was eaten when needed or wanted. Ironically, the term sushi literally means "sour-tasting", a reflection of its historic fermented roots. Despite the common reaction of distaste at the prospect of eating raw fish, sushi is actually a simple and delicious food that can easily be enjoyed by adults, children, vegetarians and even the extremely squeamish like myself!

3 BENEFITS OF SUSHI 1.Fish is a great source of protein and has many health benefits. Sushi, in particular, can be very good for health. They don't call fish brain food for nothing. Although some fish contain more fat than others, the best types of fat are the omega-3 fats. These are good fats that protect the nervous system, and provide Vitamin D and proteins to the body.

and Drug Administration recommends eating two servings of fish daily. The omega-3 fats also help prevent mental illness and can regulate blood sugar levels.

Finding good sushi is not at all difficult. Sushi restaurants have been popping up all over the place in the last ten years especially within Lagos metropolis.

Having said that I would always advise against making your own sushi rolls, always best to leave it to the professionals, Sushi chefs, or itamae (ita-meh-ee), are highly trained to handle

3.Sushi can also help with depression, boost the immune system and provide necessary fat to your diet. Sushi is also great for the heart.

In short, sushi boosts overall wellbeing,

uncooked fish. If you're not an itamae, and you decide to make your own sushi, you could run the risk of parasitic or bacterial contamination.

Most home freezers can't reach the low temperature necessary to properly freeze raw fish. But if you are still feeling the urge to make your own rolls you can use fully cooked fish or crabmeat.

TYPES OF SUSHI HOSOMAKI: Thin rolled sushi with very little rice. The Nori (Roasted seaweed) is rolled on the outside of the roll.

SASHIMI: This is sliced fish attractively served. Raw, cooked or pickled fish cut into 3-5 pieces. Usually presented on top of a few leaves of shiso and grated daikon with wasabi and ginger on the side.

NIGIRI: Pieces of fish on top of two balls of sushi rice, sometimes a slice of roasted Nori (seaweed) is put on to bind the fish to the rice and to add flavor and eye appeal.

Smoked Salmon over rice & cream cheese.

TEMAKI: These are hand Rolls that are meant to be eaten from the hand like an ice cream cone.

URAMAKI: this is sometimes called “inside-out roll”. This style of sushi has become very popular in America. Some people say that it is popular in America because the Seaweed is hidden on the inside of the roll and sushi beginners are less intimidated to eat it.

GUNKAN NIGIRI: There is another form of Nigiri called Gunkan Nigiri.

Gunkan means boat and this sushi gets the name from the way the main ingredient is held in place on top of the sushi rice. It is in a boat shape.

FUTOMAKI: This is thick rolled sushi with many ingredients inside and each piece is very large. Many variations on futomaki have been seen. Nori (seaweed) can be on outside or inside.

SUSHI ETIQUETTE 1.Eat all you take. Try to eat all the sushi that is ordered, as it is considered bad manners to waste food.

2.It is generally considered best form to eat sushi in one bite. In Japan, sushi is served in small, bite-sized pieces. In Lagos, the U.S. and the UK the size of sushi pieces tends to be a little larger, but most should still be edible in one piece.

3.Sushi is finger food. You may use chopsticks to pick up the sushi pieces, but they may be clumsy tools. Using your fingers in this case is perfectly acceptable.

4.Never "whittle" your chopsticks. If you have to, do it under the table so the chef can't see you! Doing so implies that the chef is cheap.

However, I have a few questions to ask here.

1. Does it do more harm than good if one facial scrubs every morning?

2. How does one exfoliate with salt? I have never tried that before.

1. Most facial scrubs are to be used 3 times a week, as if used everyday could be too harsh and dry the skin also leaving patches on the skin. There are a few facial scrubs that are milder and can be used every day; I know the St Ives brand does a new range of scrubs gentle enough for everyday use.

2. Dead Sea Salt is remarkably

well known and highly effective in removing dead cells, dirt and germs from the skin surface by exfoliation. They help improvement in blood circulation in the skin, which enriches the skin with nutrients and makes it glow and radiate.

However you must note that you do not use Dead Sea salt scrubs over cut and damaged areas of the skin. I would not recommend it on facial skin as it may get into the eyes.
