Emmanuel Uduag Chukwuma: Visi income for the economy of our state. So this award is in recognition of our aspirations and our vision of attaining a Delta beyond oil.
We are creating a Delta beyond oil
- Dr. Emmanuel Uduanghan
r Emmanuel Uduaghan is passionate about creating a Delta beyond Oil. He speaks about the structures being put in place in Delta state in other to achieve this. How do you feel about this award? I am very happy about this but there are a lot of FKDOOHQJHVEHFDXVHLW¡VDOODERXWFUHDWLQJRXU economy and not just depending on oil. In those days, we used to have a lot of companies, a ORWRIWUDGLQJÀUPVWKDWZHUHDURXQG1RZHYerybody depends entirely on oil. What we are doing now is to look at other areas of generating
/ March 30, 2014
What exact structures are you putting in place for a Delta beyond oil? We are looking at areas of agriculture because that was how I grew up. I grew up as a farmer, a village boy. I used to go to the farm before going to school and after school, I would return to the farm again. Sometimes, we ZHQWĂ€VKLQJ%XWQRZWKH soil is destroyed, the water is polluted, the air is polluted and agriculture is no longer there. So we want to encourage people to go back to agriculture. The other area we are looking at is in the area of tourism. Delta is a home for hospitality. In fact, the youths all over the country are known for creative works. Many of them are artists. The comedians you see, the musicians you see, most of them are either from Delta or grew up in Delta. So that is an area we are looking atthe human resource area. We have to encourage our talents. $UHWKHUHVSHFLĂ€FWKLQJV\RXGRWRKDUQHVV them? You know our commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Richard Mofe Damijo popularly called RMD, he has been undertaking talent hunt in the area of music. At the moment, we now have some musicians who are a product of that competition. In the area of comedy, one of the comedians who performed today also came out of that process. In the area of acting, a lot of actors have EHHQLGHQWLĂ€HGDQGWKH\DUHDOUHDG\PDNLQJ waves. Delta State has ethnic and security challenges. How are you coping with these problems? The ethnic challenges in the state, really is as a result of suspicion. So, what I have tried to do is to give to every ethnic group what is due to them. And when you go that way, you reduce the ethnic tension. That is what we have been doing. Many of these youths have seen oil money. Do you think they would be willing to go back to agriculture?
Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, is our Personality of the Year 2013 while Chief Innocent Chukwuma (OFR), Chairman, Innoson group of companies emerged Vanguard Most Innovative Industrialist of the year 2013. Co incidentally, each of them in separate interviews describes himself as a “village boyâ€? but both have proven that the circumstances of their birth was not strong enough to pose a limitation to their quest for a better life. Both men have recorded uncommon feats in their different capacities. Dr Uduaghan’s drive to establish an economy not dependent on oil what is now known as “Delta beyond Oilâ€? is fast becoming a model to copy. Encouraging the Again that is a big challenge that is why in some of our programmes, we have what we call, “the mental change programmeâ€?. It is all about re oriHQWDWLRQWROHWWKHPNQRZLW¡VQRWDOODERXWJRLQJ to bust pipelines or kidnapping and all the criminal activities that they use to make money. The richest people in the world today are not people who work in the oil companies. They are people who own or work in big farms. So we are trying to do a re- orientation for them. We have situations where those who have been part of the amnesty are threatening to go back to take up arms. How are you coping with this kind of issue as governor of the state? The amnesty programme gave them training and we believe the training will establish them. We are hoping that in the next few years, a lot of them would have been engaged. Where do you go from here after this award? To do more work I guess.
aghan & Innocent ionary Achievers By - Jemi Ekunkunbor
youths to take up agriculture again reminds him of his early years growing up with his grandmother in her rural village in Mosogar. Going to the farm and fishing was the main stay then not oil he recalls. Born in Oru in Anambra State, the last of six children, Chief Chukwuma grew from being a spare parts seller to pioneering the first indigenous vehicle manufacturing plant in Nigeria. Last weekend in Lagos, both men along with Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Vanguard Africa Personality of the Year 2013, were honoured at a colourful ceremony at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki. Dr Uduaghan and |Chief Chukwuma spoke briefly to Allure after receiving the awards. is is a typical grass to grace story. As a village boy, his upbringing lacked the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. As a performer, he is not given to too many words. He allows his work speak for him. Simplicity and humility envelop his entire being and belies his status as a billionaire businessman. How do you feel about this award? I feel very happy that my little effort to the industry is being recognized not just by Vanguard but by the entire country. I am very happy. When you started did you imagine you will JHWWRWKLVSRLQWZKHUH\RX¡GVWDUWZLQQLQJ

Where were you buying from at that time :HZHUHEX\LQJIURP/HYHQWLV%XW,DFWXDOly started off selling motor cycle parts. From there I moved on to selling car spare parts and much later, car production. What kind of cars should Nigerians expect? We have three types of cars under the Innoson brand. We started by producing buses. From buses, we produced pickups-SUVs. 1RZZHDUHSURGXFLQJFDUV What is the distribution like? Our cars are doing well. In fact, some African countries are using our busses now. If you watched television recently when there was crisis in Chad Republic, it was my pick up veKLFOHEUDQGWKDWWKH1LJHULDQ$UP\XVHGIRUWKH operations. In Ghana and Sierra Leone, my vehicles are all over the places. We are hoping it will go round Africa in the near future.

JEROME I WANT TO GET MARRIED! When people Consult with me in the area of getting married, I usually ask a few questions like:
is not married? <RXFDQ¡WGHQ\WKHSODFHRISURIHVVLRQDOFRXQVHOOLQJ in a MATCHMAKING PACKAGE! YOU HAVE COME TO ME TO SAY YOU ARE AVAILABLE TO MEET SOMEONE, BUT ARE YOU SUITABLE?
1. WHY DO YOU THINK YOU ARE NOT MARRIED? ,QP\H[SHULHQFHRIZRUNLWVUDUHWRÀQGVRPHRQH ZKRKDVQ¡WJRWDQVZHUVWRWKLVSDUWLFXODUTXHVWLRQDQG it seems the answers change with time, meaning the answer the person may give to that question 2 years ago, may not be the same answer he/she gives today. However, whatever answer the Person gives, is always LOADED with a Perception cast in FEAR. So we have work to do there. 2. ARE THERE PEOPLE IN YOUR FAMILY THAT ARE MARRIED AND ENJOYING MARRIAGE? Most People go on the DEFENSIVE on this one, and I probe a bit further to get to the reality on ground. I have a Lady who believed and kept on telling PHKHU3DUHQW¡V0DUULDJHZDVDOULJKWRYHUDQGRYHU again, but later burst into tears saying her parents were divorced and she has never been able to admit it because of the pain that goes with the reality. She started lying to herself and others while in QUEENS COLLEGE, Lagos, and eventually had to accept the situation as a bank manager when I met her. Do you think this kind of a Woman could have said NO TO MARRIAGE PROPOSALS several times without knowing why, and continues to wonder why she
I always meet clients who say they are ready and available. Some of them even go as far as telling me that they went off dating for sometime and believe they are ready to date again and when I assess them IRUVRPHWLPH\RXPD\DVPXFKDV,GRĂ€QGVRPHWR be OBSTINATE or DIRTY or too SELF CENTRED to accommodate someone else in their world or STINGY because they claim they have been hurt before or LACK COMMON ETHICAL CONDUCTS etc. And yet they say they are ready. It only makes me wonder why they never made themselves SUITABLE, instead of focusing on being AVAILABLE. So much work to do I say. 4. WHAT KIND OF MAN/WOMAN ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? You always hear “wo Jerome, the most important thing for me is that the person is GOD FEARINGâ€? it GRHVQ¡WPDWWHUZKDWWULEHRUZKDWWKHSHUVRQLVGRLQJ or what the person looks like, I just want somebody that God has in store for meâ€?. Well it is not God that wants to marry the Person, you are the one! When People say JUST GOD FEARING, I ALWAYS know that IT IS A LIE, because most of the time the people who ask for “God fearing onlyâ€?, are not God fearing themselves. They always have the appearance of Godliness, but their life style denies the power WKHUHRI,IDQGZKHQ\RX3UREHIXUWKHU\RXZLOOĂ€QG PRVWRIWKHPWREH9$,1$7+($57,QWURGXFHSHRSOH WRWKHPDQGWKH\DUHWKHRQHVWKDWĂ€QGIDXOWVWKH PRVWORRNLQJIRULQRWKHUVZKDWWKH\VKRXOGKDYHĂ€UVW established in their own lives.
